RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, can be made into a pill form in a laboratory. Estrogen, progestin, or both may be given to replace the estrogen no longer made by the ovaries in postmenopausal women or women who have had their ovaries removed. This is called hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or hormone therapy (HT). Combination HRT/HT is estrogen combined with progestin. This type of HRT/HT increases the risk of breast cancer. Studies show that when women stop taking estrogen combined with progestin, the risk of breast cancer decreases.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The high standards you set for yourself don’t always translate into the behavior you expect of others. That relationship problem can be resolved if you’re more flexible and less judgmental. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Not enough party bids to satisfy the Bovine’s fun-loving side this week? Go ahead and throw one of your own. Then prepare for some serious work coming up early next week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A new and intensely productive cycle is about to kick in. Be careful not to get too stressed out, though. Make time to restore your energies by relaxing with family and friends. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) This could be a good time to share some of your plans with those closest to you. Their comments could give you some added insight into how you might accomplish your goals. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) An attack of self-doubt might be unsettling for the usually super-assured Feline. But it could be your inner voice telling you to hold off implementing your plans until you’ve reassessed them. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a great time for you to reward yourself for all your hard work by taking a trip you haven’t spent months carefully planning, to somewhere you never thought you’d be going. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Some misunderstandings resist being resolved. But your sincerity in wanting to soothe those hurt feelings wins the day. By month’s end, that relationship should begin to show signs of healing. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A hectic job schedule begins to ease just in time to blow off all that work-generated steam on Halloween. A family situation runs into an unexpected complication. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A cutting remark in the workplace needs to be handled with finesse. Remember: How you respond could determine the depth of support you gain from colleagues. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Once again, that Capricornean stubborn streak sets in and could keep you from getting much-needed advice. Fortunately, it lifts by week’s end, in time to make an informed decision. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A surprise trip early in the week could lead to other unexpected offers when you return. Word to the wise: Avoid talking too much about this until you’ve made some decisions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Learning dominates the week for perspicacious Pisceans, who are always looking to widen their range of knowledge. A series of important joblinked commitments begins late in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of humor generates good feelings and good will everywhere you go. Some women who have a high risk of breast cancer may choose to have a risk-reducing mastectomy (the removal of both breasts when there are no signs of cancer). The risk of breast cancer is much lower in these women and most feel less anxious about their risk of breast cancer. However, it is very important to have a cancer risk assessment and counseling about the different ways to prevent breast cancer before making this decision.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy ACIDIC SOLUTION While some have adopted the habit of drinking an early-morning glass of hot water with lemon juice to get their digestive systems working, this supposedly healthy routine does their teeth no favors. The fact is that lemon juice is a strong acid that eats away at tooth enamel. As this erosion occurs, the teeth may become increasingly sensitive. As the tooth enamel weakens further, it effectively dissolves to the point where fissures may appear. Over time, as the enamel erodes, the underlying dentin will begin to show through the translucent enamel. At that point, teeth will appear to be yellow and will become increasingly so. Unfortunately, no amount of tooth-whitening products can counteract this effect. In addition to our commitment to patient health and well-being, we also dedicate ourselves to keeping our patients out of the dental chair. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL provides
the highest quality of preventive care, including sound dietary advice, so that you’ll spend less time in treatment and more time enjoying your healthy smile. We offer complete general dental care, from cleanings to full mouth reconstruction to repair of any damage done by neglect or trauma. We also provide cosmetic dentistry here at 6 Batavia City Centre, for the sunniest smiles possible. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. Dentists strongly suggest that if you do drink highly acidic beverages, you sip them through a straw. In addition, never brush your teeth after drinking or eating acidic drinks or foods, when tooth enamel is most vulnerable.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 59-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis. I have never been a drinker. I was treated with Harvoni for three months. I understand the medication is intended to cure the hepatitis C. What about the cirrhosis? My doctor hasn’t explained any of my long-term effects from taking this. -- C.J. ANSWER: Hepatitis C is a common infection of the liver. It is caused by a virus, which can be transmitted by blood and blood products, as well as through sharing needles for injection drugs. It is rarely transmitted sexually. Anyone with a history of injection drug use, who received blood transfusions or organ transplants before 1992, or who received clotting factors before 1987 should be tested, as should anyone with a known blood or sexual exposure to someone with hepatitis C. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends testing all adults born in the United States between 1945 and 1965, anyone who is HIV-infected, who received hemodialysis or was incarcerated. The treatment you have taken (Harvoni) is a combination of ledipasvir and sofosbuvir, and has an excellent cure rate. The cure rate is 99 percent in people who had never been treated before and who did not have cirrhosis. Even people like you, with cirrhosis, had a cure rate of 94 percent with 12 weeks of therapy in the trial that got the medication approved. Cirrhosis is liver damage and scarring as a result of liver disease. Once it has developed, it is not reversible; however, a successful cure of the hepatitis C virus greatly reduces the risk of further damage, specifically reducing the need for liver transplant and the rates of death, liver cancer and other liver-related complications. These medications are so new that I can’t estimate how much lower your risk of further damage to your liver is post-treatment; however, there is little doubt that your likely successful treatment will substantially improve your expected length and quality of life. But, since you still have cirrhosis, you will need to take some important precautions. These include continued abstinence from alcohol, careful monitoring of prescription and non-prescription medications, avoiding raw shellfish and making sure your immunizations are up-to-date. You should keep asking your gastroenterologist questions until you are satisfied. I recommend you make a list of questions to ask, and bring a friend to help make sure you understand the answers you get. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Should your blood pressure go higher as you age? Is the top number or the bottom more important? I don’t like medicine, and my blood pressure was 145/82, but the top number sometimes goes to 150-158. -- J.S. ANSWER: Both the systolic (top number) and diastolic blood pressures are important, and the difference between them is occasionally important (for example, a blood pressure of 160/60 is more worrisome than 160/85). Blood pressure does go up with age, but even in people over 60, the recommendation is still to get the BP down below 150, and I try to aim for 140 if there aren’t too many side effects. It often takes several tries to find a regimen that gets the blood pressure where it should be without affecting quality of life. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. How you can benefit from having a pet Pets have been kept for centuries. Statistics from various sources indicate North Americans own millions of dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, and reptiles. Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but the benefits of having a pet extends beyond their appearances and temperaments. • Pets can help prevent loneliness. Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion. • Pets can save lives. Pets can be trained to perform various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with everyday tasks. • Pets help lower allergy risks. Keeping pets around can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. • Pets provide socialization opportunities. A pet can be the common denominator to strike up new friendships and connect with others. Whether walking around the neighborhood or being part of a pet obedience class or interest group, pets can help their owners expand their social circles. • Pets can help combat stress. Talking to or stroking a pet can
make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found having a pet around can lower blood pressure, ease anxiety and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or post traumatic stress disorder. • Pets help teach responsibility. Taking care of a pet can help children and adults become more responsible. According to the American Pet Product Association’s 2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey, 58 percent of pet owners say their pets help teach their kids to be responsible through routine care, exercise and feeding of the animal. Pets are more than mere companions. In fact, pets can offer numerous health and well-being benefits to people of all ages.
DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Finding renewed vigor: Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

Card of Thanks To Chris Collins and his staff A few months after my husbands death I learned that my former employer had discontinued the health insurance I earned under union contract. Unable to resolve the issue myself, I contacted your office. Immediately you went to bat for me and within a couple of weeks my health insurance was restored. Your efforts on my behalf saved me a great deal of both money and anxiety during the most difficult time of my life. For that I will be eternally grateful.
Thank You Chris Collins and May God Bless You. Nancy Reding, Attica

Best Prices - from Routine Maintenance to Major Repairs
FALLETI MOTORS, Inc. SALES • SERVICE • DETAILING 504 Ellicott St., Batavia • 343-2222 Servicing Genesee County Since 1978
On October 1st I was shopping at Honeoye Falls Marketplace. A nice couple was in front of me paying for their groceries. They bought two baked chickens. I said "your dinner is ready". The man smiled at me and waved to the cashier. He pointed at my groceries and said "add those on my bill" What a wonderful experience! Thanks again! Grateful to the City of Batavia for the scarecrows on Main Street. So fun and festive! It's nice to drive down Main Street and see how creative people are!
To the "boy" who was behind me on his motorcycle in the middle of the busy [local town] intersection going to the left. I'm not turning quickly rushing the already gone arrow just because you need to get where you're going. Then you make a scene and scream at me about being a bad driver and calling me disgusting names. You're clearly the one who needs to get off the road. I hope your license gets revoked or you get arrested for road rage because that was shameful and rude. Don't assume she knows the neighbors can see her. When the sun is shining it reflects off the windows making it hard to see inside. Why don't you try talking to her about it? If all else fails, you could just not look into her yard. People have a right to be nude in their own homes.
It's hard to find time these days with work, home, family, etc. to spend on any volunteer activity but there are so many areas in your own community that need help. To those who volunteer, keep up the good work! Thank you to all the lovely people who still hold the door open for those behind them. It may seem like such a little thing, but in a small way, it lets others know that you see them and that you care enough to pause a
Some clarification is needed. Feeding vermin is actually frowned upon by the NYS DEC. Feeding (baiting) deer is illegal in NYS. Look it up. As for the Bible quote, have you ever heard "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"? Feeding squirrels causes damage to home and property, plain and simple. By the way, our neighbor has more money than the Lord himself and far more than we do. We do our gardening ourselves and buy what we can afford. Fences do not keep vermin out, and twenty foot fences would be necessary to keep deer out which is against village code. Last note, flowers are a gift from God too that we have tried to nurture also and those won't eat holes in screens and cause property damage. I do believe trained service animals serve an important role. But they don't belong in grocery carts! And that nasty pad used to line the cart isn't cutting it. I do applaud [local store], they post at entrances service animals CANNOT be placed in carts. My wife and I were shopping in [local town] in 2 different stores. The first store we were in there was a couple in front of us

moment to show them courtesy. All these little kindnesses create a better world. Thank you. The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to all of our Annual Campaign donors- past & present. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-today operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity
walking down the isle and their little dog pooped on the floor; they did pick it up but never went to the service desk so someone could clean it up correctly. In the second store, we watched a couple take their dog and load it in a shopping cart. Now the shopping carts are meant for your food items and your young child. In both cases, these dogs weren't service dogs, and they did not belong in the stores shopping with their owners. I like dogs, but there is a time and place for your pets, and shopping in a store is not the place. Your truck passed me and another car on a double solid line. You think you are so smart? You're going to be the ones in a coffin someday, when you don't get back in time of oncoming traffic. You people who pass our wide trailer and my car and the truck pulling the trailer, I've seen you barely have time to get back in on time from traffic in opposite direction. You seem to have a death wish because one of these days, you being in a huge hurry, you're going to get nailed from you taking stupid chances. Your choice. You think your lawlessness is permissible, I'm sure one day you will pay the price.
that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community.
You were lucky your fireworks stopped. I was going to call the cops. It's illegal at this time of year and in our county it isn't legal, period. Being so dry out as it has been, it's not a smart thing to do. Anyhow putting all this aside, if you haven‚'t noticed it's not the Fourth of July. But if I ever hear them again, first boom, I will be calling the sheriff's office Not even four months ago myself, as well as other residents of this small hamlet received notice that our sidewalk would be extended. This was joyous news, for children walk on this road, people walk their dogs, and people in general are out walking or exercising. This is a busy route and this was long overdue. However, here we are now the summer is over, yet no sidewalk. I find it frustrating and embarrassing that this around 1/2-1 mile sidewalk extension is so hard to produce. Whether it's the town to which this hamlet belongs is at fault, or the community itself taking it's time to "take the right or low bid" it's inexcusable. It's been four months and it's a sidewalk! So if you are in charge of this project and are reading this, please hurry it up and lets extend it before winter comes.

In keeping with the spirit of ‘no soldier left behind’ the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club NY6: Finger Lakes Chapter and the American Legion Post #294 came together to help one of their own. In conjunction with assistance, support, time, supplies and, in some cases labor, from the Harper Mobile Home Trailer Park, the Home Depot located on Ridge Road, the Ontario Gun Club, Rush Gravel of Rush, NY, PGR and Hoth, Alandscape & Design of Lakeville and Steve Verdi and his building crew, on the morning of Saturday, October 6th, these veterans worked hard, free-of-charge, to construct and attach a secure ramp to the home of veteran Robert Stoll. Mr. Robert Stoll is a 92-year-old World War II veteran who served his country for 31 years with honor and distinction. Mr. Stoll came to the defense of his country when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. When he then enlisted, he was only 17 years old. In the war, Mr. Stoll served aboard the LSM 226, one of the first ships to land during the invasion of Okinawa. After the war, he served in the submarine fleet and was responsible for other duties until he retired from an exemplary 31-year military career.
Now an elderly gentleman, Mr. Robert Stoll’s several front steps had become problematic for him. As U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club Vice President of the Finger Lakes Chapter, Darryl Williams, shared, the goal of this project was to ensure that Mr. Robert Stoll could enter and leave his home safely and with as little difficulty as possible. The handicap ramp had to be constructed according to very specific codes, and Mr. Williams gave special thanks to Mr. Verdi who ensured that this code was properly followed. The teamwork and dedication among veterans and other volunteers were inspirational to witness as they built Mr. Stoll’s new handicap ramp along the side and front of his home. Mr. Stoll, overlooking the construction from his seat on his front porch, seemed so pleased with his fellow veteran’s generosity and progress. By mid-afternoon, the project was well underway. The old front steps had been removed; concrete had been poured around supports and lumber construction was progressing steadily. Camaraderie was in the air, and while the volunteers were working hard, they were enjoying each other’s company, as well. Congratulations on your new ramp, Mr. Stoll, and thank you for your service.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Foot traffic: Lawns can take a pounding from foot traffic, leading to compaction and spots of dead lawn. Try to redirect the traffic elsewhere to give worn down areas a break. Aeration can relieve soil compaction. If a certain area has become the de facto pathway, install a paver, gravel or concrete walkway in that spot.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.
