Hope Center of LeRoy Making a Difference By Amanda Dudek

S

everal years ago, Reverend Henry Moore followed a vision to bring hope to people across stages of life. So, he and others started serving their community out of a local church. Little could they have imagined running five programs from a Main Street storefront in picturesque LeRoy. “As we continued to serve, God continued to tell us that our vision was too small,” said Rev. Moore. So, he and his pastor realized they needed to separate the outreach from the church and become their own separate faith based 501c3, becoming the Hope Center of LeRoy, allowing them to begin work with members of the community and other local churches. According to Rev. Moore, the center’s director, their intention is “to bring faith and community together.” The Hope Center can now get as big as there are people with a heart for God, who want to start a program that serves real community needs in the name of Christ. They simply present their vision, and they can help them make it happen under the umbrella of the Hope Center. “Hope is a word which speaks of a confident expectation that believes tomorrow will be different, and more specifically, ‘better’ than yesterday,” said Rev. Moore. “Hope is based on the powerful love of a good God who is on your side.” The Center currently offers five programs: Fresh Start Literacy, Memory & Friends, LIFT: Ladies in Faith Together, JOY (Just Older Youth) Fellowship and The Sewing Bee.

The Hope Center of LeRoy’s “Memory & Friends!”

In grades K-6, Fresh Start Literacy gives children the one-on-one reading support they need for greater success in the classroom and in life. “About a year ago, we brought in our first student,” Rev. Moore recalled. “We work with students by appointment and hope to open this program to children of all ages.” Like all the programs offered at The Hope Center of LeRoy, the program is staffed entirely by volunteers. Memory & Friends, a respite care program, has already begun making an impact in its seven short months. Providing a much-needed break for caregivers of those with early to mid-stage memory impairment such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, it’s held from 10am-2pm on the second Wednesday of every month. Caregivers can bring their loved ones in to spend time with a consistent friend. “We work one-on-one with them,” said Rev. Moore. “We play games, do crafts and music. Caregivers are able to go to appointments, visit others and have some quiet time.” The program has been very successful with much positive feedback “from family members who were blessed to bring them as well as from volunteers who had [...] the opportunity to work with these individuals,” shared Rev. Moore. JOY (Just Older Youth) Fellowship for those fifty-five and older is another enriching program. “They get together once or twice a month usually,” explained Rev. Moore. JOY Fellowship’s wide variety of activities, which take place both during the day and in the evening, encourages people and helps them socialize in positive and protected ways. The Center has two more programs: The Sewing Bee, a multigenerational sewing instruction program, and LIFT (Ladies in Faith Together), the Center’s first program begun for single moms.

LIFT now provides support for moms, both married and single, on the third Saturday of each month from 5:00pm6:30pm. The meeting features a light snack for mothers and their children, activities, supervised childcare, encouragement and spiritual support. The Hope Center also hosts two annual events: Operation Prom Dress and Go Pro Spa Day. Started in 2010 by Rev. Moore’s wife, Valerie, Operation Prom Dress is an annual giveaway meant to ensure that every girl has a beautiful dress for her prom. “We bring in 500Enjoying a Thanksgiving meal at The Hope Center of LeRoy! 700 new and gently used dresses each year,” shared Rev. Moore. He recalled a young woman two years ago who wanted to try on the display dress they kept in the window. They agreed, and it fit perfectly. When they confirmed that she could have the dress and free of charge, the young woman couldn’t believe it. Said Rev. Moore, “The girl was talking on the phone outside and said, ‘I can’t believe they gave me this dress. I’m going to shine.’ It was all about being able to touch a person’s life and change it.” Go Pro (God’s People Restoring Others) Spa Day, started by Lori Steinbrenner, also encourages women. “Each year, we invite a particular group of people,” explained Rev. Moore. “Last year, it was single moms. We give them a full makeover complete with hours of being completely pampered, a meal, and pray for them.” “It is what is inside that really matters,” he observed. “Your inner beauty is the most important part of who you are. This is true male or female, but women in particular hear that if they do not look like this or dress like that, then they are not beautiful, and it crushes them.” The Center’s future endeavors will depend on space and volunteers. “Our goal is to reach people, restore hope and revitalize the lives of those around us. To me, the sky is the limit.” For more information, call The Hope Center of LeRoy at (585) 768-8184, email info@hopecenterleroy.org or visit www.hopecenterleroy.org.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Buying life insurance. Much like various other types of insurance, life insurance can be purchased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company’s website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, as no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information about products from various providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for. Billee Mosher “Bubbles” :) December 31, 2019 Elba: At age 25, Billee went to be with her daddy and her babies on Tuesday, December 31, 2019. She was born in Rochester, NY to Patricia Mosher and the late William Mosher. Billee attended Livonia Central School and loved working at the Hemlock Fair. She loved helping her father build derby cars and was a “Bucket Baby”(Explorer) for the Hemlock Fire Department. Billee was a kind soul, who always had a smile on her face and who had a heart of gold. She could make anybody laugh by being silly. Billee loved life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Hello, I'm I was adopted almost 8 years ago, when I was 8 weeks old. I am a mixed breed cat. I am a real sassy-pants in all ways. I don't really enjoy being picked up or cuddled. If someone picks me up or I feel like getting into trouble, my pupils increase in size so much there is only a very thin ring of my actual eye color (yellow). Although I do enjoy gentle headbutts. My favorite pastime is napping, and I LOVE cat treats! :) Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

“2019” A Quick Year in Review With 2019 in the books, The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant once again had a memorable year. Executive Chef William Burch and his culinary team have another successful year under their belt! Our year started off with serving quality food during the harsh winter months. Fortunately for Chef, a little vacation and celebration in Las Vegas for his birthday was just what the frigid Western New York weather called for. You see, Executive Chef Will gets to take a well, and I stress, well, deserved vacation in January, on us, as our thanks to him for his countless hours and dedication to The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, year-round. (Although it is hard and difficult work, I do tag along on these journeys.) We experienced the culinary -Steven Foster, Co Owner expertise of Chef Gordon Ramsay and other well-known Las Vegas eateries while enjoying the spectacular city. We are excited about this year’s upcoming trip, traveling to Waikiki to experience the culture and dining that Hawaii has to offer. Early in the year, we decided we were going to build our second food trailer. Sous Chef Michael Mattern’s passion for smoked food also came to a reality with his idea of “The Rib Cage.” After a couple trips to Nashville, we arrived in Stafford hauling a custom made 330-gallon smoker and shortly after, the arrival of our second custom-built food trailer. Our culinary team worked together for months to create a new menu for our 2019 events season. We had a vision of getting away from the “traditional” roast beef sandwich and create sandwiches that speak to who we are as an experienced culinary team and as The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant. We came up with many new sandwiches including our feature, “The Landmark”, a smoked prime rib sandwich topped with homemade BBQ, Homemade Slaw, on a Fresh Grilled Brioche Bun with Kosher Salt and Carraway Seeds, finished with a Bread and Butter Pickle. We ate so many of these sandwiches over the winter months… making sure we knew exactly the right smoking time for the meat, the perfect BBQ recipe… ensuring we had the perfect sandwich. A lot of preparation went into the new menu and it was a huge success. The Landmark Sandwich suddenly became our number one seller at events across Western New York. We traveled throughout Western New York, Central New York, and even out of New York. We featured our food in Washington D.C. and well as making an impromptu stop in Hershey, P.A. with our food trailer. We proudly served our food at The Great New York State Fair, Darien Lake, as well as The Genesee County Fair, winning “The Best Food Award.” Tim and I were honored to be asked to be their Grand Marshalls. I can not say enough about this staff, Chef Will, Sous Chef Michael Mattern, Chef Clifton Williams, and the rest of our dedicated staff, they ran a restaurant while also running two mobile operations, ultimately two more restaurants, just on wheels. Our in-house operations served well over 16,400 portions of prime rib to guests, exemplifying our title of the “Prime Rib Capital of Western New York.” With outside operations attending well over 250 events, the season came to an end in late October. I don’t think we were ever so glad to see our food trucks and smoker put into storage for the season. I think some, mentioned above, might have been making some hand gestures through the window when Tim was pulling out of the parking lot with them. Straight into holiday season we go. In November we had our employee holiday party as our thanks for a job well done year-round. I have said this time and time again, I feel as if we have the best staff in Western New York! We honored some of our standout employees. Chef Will received our 2019 MVP Award, Chef Michael Mattern received our 2019 Teamwork Award, Becky Harding received our Owners Choice Award. Chef Clifton Williams, Erica Scott,

A lot of preparation went into the new menu and it was a huge success.

Executive Chef William Burch with a smoker full of delicious eats! and Kennard Chandler received employee of the year awards. Sandra Coppini and Theresa Whaley were presented with our 4 G’s award which exemplifies customer service. It was soon time to start planning and creating our “Winter Wonderland of Lights.” Tim’s passion for Christmas lights allowed the community and guests alike to enjoy a light display featuring well over 2.5 million lights. The restaurant was festively decorated inside and out, featuring my favorite: the Buffalo Bills Christmas theme at the bar. We held our 3rd annual “Community Days” December 2nd and 9th. We invited the community to celebrate the season with free horse and carriage rides throughout the lights, a free petting zoo, firetrucks from Stafford Volunteer Fire Department with their volunteering for traffic control and visits by Santa and Mrs. Claus. This has been a great year for us here at The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant. We look forward to 2020 with our continued activism and community work while striving to continually bring the best dining experience a restaurant can offer to its guests. We would like to thank all our customers for their continued valued patronage as well as our dedicated staff, friends, and family- for we wish you and your families all a healthy and prosperous 2020! Steven Foster- Co-Owner The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant From Executive Chef, William Burch: 2019 was a year to remember after taking on a second food trailer and a 330 gallon smoker for Chef Mike. I have since made a suggestion box for him and it sort of looks like a paper shredder. My little attempt at humor there. This year was big for my restaurant with hundreds of catering events along with private, and holiday parties. It was fantastic overall. We had the pleasure of hosting different barbeque parties where we spent some overnights at the restaurant preparing our delicious brisket that took hours upon hours to prepare. Between fairs and different weekly events, we were able to show our culinary talents, proving The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant is more than just a beef and seafood house. I could not be prouder of my team for overcoming all the challenges and extras we placed upon them this year. They always got the job done. Thank you to all our customers who allow us to continually grow and the generous support of our local community. Happy New Year to all. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 91-year-old male. When I switched primary care physicians, my new doctor shook his head because my previous doctor had never told me about my low GFR readings and being borderline diabetic. In the past I had assumed that if the doctor didn’t mention any low or high blood test results, everything must be OK. I no longer assume: I ask for a copy of the results and question them. The new doctor referred me to a nephrologist. My blood pressure at the time was usually in the 130-140/60-70 range. He told me that for a person of my age, that was too low. He gave me a target of 159/89. Then on my next visit to primary care, I was told that my blood pressure was too high; I was prescribed losartan. I am testing my blood pressure daily, and the past few days it has been in the 170s. So, what is a good target for my blood pressure? Which doctor is correct? -- A.L. ANSWER: There is no absolute right answer to your question. On the one hand, overaggressive treatment of blood pressure in a 91-year-old is unnecessary and may lead to symptoms of lightheadedness, especially upon standing. Other blood pressure drugs may have additional side effects. On the other hand, a 91-year-old has a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, and in someone with a low GFR reading (a measurement of kidney function) and borderline diabetes (which further increases the risk of heart attack and stroke), most experts would aim for a blood pressure goal that is closer to 120-130/80-85, as long as it isn’t causing annoying symptoms. I’m not clear why the doctor wasn’t happy with your usual blood pressure, since a level of 130-140/60s seems very reasonable for a man your age if you aren’t having side effects. If 170 is the usual systolic pressure on your new regimen, I would ask about going back to the old one. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had small breasts. Suddenly, in my mid-70s, my breasts grew, and now at 80 I have outgrown most of my clothes. My doctor said that it is fat, but I have gained only a few pounds. Could this be hormonal? Have you addressed this issue before? -- S.F. ANSWER: I haven’t addressed this before. Breasts change size during a woman’s life for many reasons. Breast tissue is a mixture of fat and glandular tissue. For young women, there’s proportionally more glandular tissue, the amount of which tends to decrease over time. After menopause, the breasts become less glandular; what is lost is replaced by fat, as there is less estrogen. About 20% of women will notice significantly larger breasts after menopause; however, this usually occurs along with overall weight gain. Significant breast enlargement without much weight gain is not common in my experience. Hopefully, your doctor did a thorough examination. However, I think it is very unlikely that your breast size changes represent a tumor. Very rarely, there are estrogen-producing tumors, so if there were other reasons to be concerned, your doctor might check blood levels of hormones, including estrogen. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. family came to our aid and a woman from a nearby house. We are so grateful for their assistance. We cannot thank you both enough. It’s wonderful to know there are good, kind people to help where and when you need them! On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I were at the Seneca Park Zoo and were caught in a snow squall while walking to our car. My husband took a tumble, and being seniors, this is always worrisome. He was unable to get up and had a cut on his head. A young man with his “You have voided the title,” she said with a gleam in her eye. By checking the wrong box on the backside of my son’s title, I inadvertently voided the entire document. My fault, but the consequence is a ten day wait on new documentation and $20. Thank you very much, DMV. My husband and I plant pots of annuals to beautify a little piece of highway along the lake along with his extensive gardens that he keeps expanding every year. We planted the pots around Memorial Day and just as they started flourishing around the end of June or early July all four of them disappeared! This is not the first time some pots have been missing, but all four? What a sad state of affairs! I cannot believe that you could bring these to your home, and no GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I looked across the road and saw a spotlight going into my horse pasture. The light was coming from a car. He backed up to look more. When he saw me come out, he sped off. Had I not come outside and turned the porch light on, he may have shot my horse. On Wed 11/20/19 around sundown, you killed Stevie, a silly brindle mutt we loved for just over a year. We were sure she’d learn

Page 19

not to jump up and to stop chasing the cats someday. You also shot Henry, a Husky mix who probably initiated the escape from our fenced-in back yard. After dark, Henry limped home, collapsing in the road. Our kids came screaming. We scooped him up, and the battle to save Henry’s life began. His wounds looked like a gunshot, (through and through) later confirmed by the vet. Yes, 6 children got to see what a deer slug does to a dog and will forever imagine a beloved family pet dying out there, never to be found. Henry died despite our valiant effort. FYI, it’s illegal to shoot a dog, except in self-defense. Somebody knows something. Please call the Sheriff with information on our two dogs shot and killed in [local town].

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING

The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.

Tool & Equipment Rental Floor Sanders, Backhoes, Lawn & Garden Equipment & more! No deposits required. Reservations encouraged. Check out our complete list of rentals on our website.

Proudly Serving Our Community For 26 Years

If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers.

111 CEDAR St. • BATAVIA • 585-343-4899

Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall.

www.cedarstreetonline.com

To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.

Get support or talk it out. Speaking about what you are going through and getting reassurance from other people can work wonders to strengthen resilience. When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.

W hile older kids can typically handle sleds on their ow n, parents should ride along w ith toddlers to prevent falls and handle steering duties. Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make your goals public. By publicly declaring your intention to improve your life, you’re putting some positive pressure on yourself to fully commit to your goal. Friends and loved ones can be great sources of support, and once they’re aware of your efforts, you likely won’t want to let them down. Once you have decided on a resolution, post your short-term and long-term goals to your Facebook page or let your immediate family and closest friends know of your goals in person. Their encouragement can help you stay on track, and they may even offer to help you realize your goals.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 12, 1932, Ophelia Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas becomes the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Caraway had been appointed earlier to fill the vacancy left by her late husband, Thaddeus Horatio Caraway. * On Jan. 11, 1949, on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., the cornerstone is laid at the first mosque of note in the United States. The Islamic Center was complete with a 160-foot minaret from which prayers were to be announced.

Both Men And Women Resolve To Tackle Disorganization In 2020; Women Report Feeling More Stressed By Its Effects (NAPS)—If you’re ever determined to finally streamline your office “to do’s” and make a dent in your inbox, or committed to finding a way to keep the kids’ toys out of the way of unwary feet, you’re not alone. A recent national survey of more than 1,200 individuals conducted by the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) for its annual Get Organized & Be Productive campaign revealed that a full 31 percent of respondents are putting “getting organized” on their list of New Year’s resolutions. While the data shows both genders on board with this idea, it also showed that for women, the ramifications may be more significant.

* On Jan. 10, 2008, Tata Motors in India debuts the Nano, billing it as the world's cheapest car. The bubble-shaped mini-vehicle had a base price of $2,000. It had a body made of plastic and sheet metal -- and one windshield wiper.

GO Month evolved as recognition that many view the fresh start implied by a new year as the time to finally tackle the disorganization in their lives—at home and on the job. The survey was designed to probe how feelings of disorganization impact men and women. “People have different levels of tolerance for disorganization in their lives, and what is acceptable for one person may be intolerable for another,” NAPO Executive Director Jennifer Pastore Monroy, CAE observed. “This was particularly true for women.” What The Survey Showed While half of all respondents said that when they feel disorganized, they find it hard to concentrate on current projects, more female respondents reported feeling stressed from feeling out of control of their environment than did men. Specifically: • Thirty-six percent of women said that looking at how organized or disorganized their home is, they feel stressed or completely stressed compared to only 22 percent of men. • More than half of women respondents (53.7 percent) report disorganization leaves them unable to concentrate on the work at hand, vs only 45 percent of men. • 35.5 percent of women vs 22 percent of men wished at some time for someone to come in and organize their home. Monroy’s advice to help streamline one’s environment? “Don’t wait until you feel out of control to tackle the stressors in your life. Having a professional organizer or productivity expert to help look at things with fresh eyes can encourage new day-to-day behaviors to create the needed change, whether you are a man or a woman.” Learn More For further facts and tips, visit www.napo.net. Many people feel a need to get more organized for the New Year. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver At some point you’ve almost certainly heard a coward described as “lily-livered,” but did you ever wonder where that expression came from? It was once believed that the seat of courage in the human body was the liver; therefore, someone who was timid presumably lacked blood in the liver, causing that organ to become white. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That lower-thanacceptable performance you’re getting from others in your group might be the result of miscommunication. If so, correct it before serious problems arise later on. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected situation could call for a change of plans. If so, you might feel that this is unfair. But it’s best to make the needed adjustments now. There’ll be time later for rescheduling. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The new year brings opportunities you might want to look into. Some might be more interesting than others. But take time to look at all of them before you make any decisions. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good idea to be careful about expenses until you’ve worked out that pesky financial problem. You might find it advisable to get some solid advice on how to proceed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance looms large over the Leonine aspect. Single Lions looking for love should find Cupid very cooperative. Paired Cats can expect a renewed closeness in their relationships. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making contact with a former colleague might not be high on your list of priorities. But it could pay off personally as well as professionally. Avoid bringing up any negatives about the past. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A personal relationship could face added stress because of a situation involving someone close to both of you. Be supportive and, above all, try to avoid playing the blame game. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might well find some lingering uncertainties about a decision. If so, take that as a warning that you might not be ready to make that move yet. More study would be in order. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Music is a dominant theme for Sagittarians right now, and it should remind you to make a greater effort to restore some much-needed harmony in that very special relationship. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although family matters might demand much of the Sea Goat’s attention this week, you’ll want to try to make time to handle those all-important workplace situations as well. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recurring unresolved issue might need to be revisited before you can move forward. Consider asking someone familiar with the situation to act as an impartial counselor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Ignore pressure to make a decision. Keeping your options open is still the wisest course, at least until you’re sure you’ve learned all you need to know about the matter at hand. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re capable of great loyalty to those around you, which is one reason you can count on devotion from friends and family.
