FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. SPORTS QUIZ By Chris Richcreek 1. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Sledding: Sledding may remind adults of their childhoods and turn kids’ snow days into fun afternoons they w ill never forget. Kids can seemingly ride their sleds and toboggans dow n snow y hills all day long, but even parents get a kick out of racing kids dow nhill or sharing a sled w ith their youngsters. W hile older kids can typically handle sleds on their ow n, parents should ride along w ith toddlers to prevent falls and handle steering duties. W hen sledding, keep a close eye for any signs that suggest kids might be getting too cold, such as shivering or clothes that are soaked through.

The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

Snow tires a w orthy investment

AUTO SECTION

As the mercury falls, the rubber used to make traditional tires can become hard and less pliable, compromising its ability to grip the road. How ever, many snow tires are made w ith a specialized rubber that remains supple even in very cold temperatures, making it easier for the tire to hug the roadw ays even w hen those roads are in poor condition.

Women can measure their bust around the center of the breasts and back. Chest measurements are taken as high up as possible on the widest part of the chest. For women, this will occur directly under the breasts. The waist is measured at the narrowest point width-wise, usually just above the navel. Sleeves are measured from the middle of the back of the neck over the top of the shoulder and down to the point where the sleeve will end. Men should measure a collar around the base of their necks where a shirt collar would sit. Hip size should be taken around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks when feet are placed together while standing. Inseam is measured from the top of the inner thigh to the ankle. Measure shoe size while standing in stocking feet. Pay attention to shoe width as well. Knowing body measurements can make clothes shopping easier and ensure people are wearing the right sizes.

We Care About ut

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

YOUR SMILE BECOMES YOU It is worth mentioning that many people do not have perfect ”Hollywood” smiles, but they do have smiles with features that make them immediately recognizable and lovable. For example, one well-known French dentist employs a technique known as “micro-rotations” to create smiles of ”harmonious asymmetry.” In order to give their face a more youthful appearance, adult patients may decide to have their lateral incisors rotated slightly instead of having their four front teeth aligned in a perfect row. If you want to see an example of harmonious asymmetry, look at Keira Knightley’s natural smile. Once you see her smile, you will likely agree that she would not be herself without this endearing “imperfection.”

A smile doesn’t have to be perfect to be perfectly lovely. We are a full-service dental care practice, emphasizing listening to our patients’ needs and designing a treatment plan to suit their individual wishes and hopes. From a comfortable and inviting dental office to gentle treatment and complete continuing care, we want you to enjoy your teeth for a lifetime. We look forward to hearing from you - please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 6 Batavia City Centre. PH: 585.343.4246. P.S. The French dentist mentioned above, Didier Fillion, helped Kate Middleton achieve the smile she desired prior to her wedding to Prince William.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A family friend has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon. ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and lightcolored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery). ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a friend who is a longtime user of diet soda pop. A year ago, she was diagnosed with colon cancer and spots on her liver. She is taking chemo again now. She continues to consume diet soda, which concerns me because I have heard of possible adverse effects of artificial sweeteners. How would you advise her? I hesitate to say anything, since she might be getting more unsolicited advice than she wants already. -- M.K. ANSWER: I think that artificial sweeteners are unlikely to have had any role in causing her cancer in the first place, nor in her treatment or risk of recurrence. It’s more important for her to stay hydrated during chemotherapy, and she should have what is easiest for her -- and if that’s diet soda, that’s fine. Even if water is the best choice, I completely agree with your thoughtfulness: Now is not the time to give unsolicited health advice. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Jan. 20, 1980, bleachers at a bullring in Sincelejo, Colombia, collapse, resulting in the deaths of 222 people. The deadliest tragedy at a sporting event in Colombia's history was the result of overcrowding and poor construction. On Jan. 22, 2003, the U.S. Census Bureau releases detailed statistics on race and ethnicity showing that the Hispanic population was the country's largest minority group. Some 29% of immigrants in the U.S. had come from Mexico alone. On Jan. 21, 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter grants an unconditional pardon to hundreds of thousands of men who evaded the draft during the Vietnam War. Some 100,000 young Americans went abroad in the late 1960s and early ‘70s to avoid military service.

Good G ood H Health ealth R Reset eset (NAPS)—A good health reset can happen any time of the year. It simply takes a commitment to making small, sustainable changes that add up to impactful, healthy habits. Dr. Samara Sterling with The Peanut Institute says it’s best to begin by concentrating on the good habits you already follow. “Set yourself up for success by building on the healthy things you like to do,” says Sterling. “For example, if you typically eat one serving of fruit a day, figure out a way to increase that to two servings.” Over time, as you amp up your healthy habits, the detrimental ones tend to fade away more easily. As part of a good health reset, Dr. Sterling recommends incorporating more protein, especially plant-based proteins, into a daily diet. “Proteins and healthy fats make you feel fuller for longer and can help eliminate the urge to snack and consume empty calories,” explains Sterling. Peanuts are an example of a powerful plant protein. Just one serving of peanuts delivers seven grams of protein, 19 vitamins and minerals and heart-healthy fats. “Peanuts are categorized as a superfood because they’re nutrientdense and deliver superior health benefits in a very small serving,” says Dr. Sterling. “If you combine superfoods, like kale and peanuts or quinoa and peanuts, you’re really maximizing your nutritional intake.” There’s more good news because peanut butter also packs protein. “Research has shown that the consumption of small amounts of peanuts or peanut butter has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes,” says Sterling. “It’s easy to incorporate peanuts and peanut butter into breakfast, lunch or dinner.” Mediterranean Grain Medley with Peanuts 3 Tbsp. peanut oil 2 garlic cloves, minced ½ tsp. hot pepper flakes ½ red bell pepper, diced 1 yellow squash, diced 8 oz. snap peas 2 cups beluga lentils or brown lentils, pre-cooked 1 cup jasmine rice, pre-cooked 2-inch piece of ginger, grated 1 cup peanuts, plain, roasted 1 bunch green onions, chopped Salt to taste, Lime juice to taste, Cilantro as garnish Heat a sauté pan and add peanut oil. Add garlic and pepper flakes, cook for 30 seconds. Add bell pepper and squash, sauté for 3–4 minutes. Add snap peas, cook for an additional minute. Add lentils, rice, ginger, lime juice and salt. Mix well. Heat the grains for 1 minute then toss in the peanuts and green onions. Serve warm and enjoy!

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Emphasize time management. Hectic schedules can quickly derail resolutions. Many people want to eat healthier and exercise more but find their time is stretched pretty thin, which can make it difficult to get to the gym or prepare healthy meals at home. Finding ways to manage time more effectively can make it easier to stay committed to New Year’s resolutions. Right down your daily schedule and look for ways to free up time. If you routinely take an hour for lunch each day, use that time to exercise and eat at your desk when you return from your walk, workout or jog. Try to wake up 30 to 60 minutes earlier each morning to exercise, and make use of time before bed by preparing a healthy lunch for the following day.

TRIVIA TEST

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR

By Fifi Rodriguez

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Mixed signals could create problems. Make sure your views are presented clearly, and insist others do the same. Don’t let an unanswered question go by without a full explanation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial pressures ease, allowing for more budget flexibility. But as the money-wise Bovine will appreciate, thrift still beats out splurging. Expect news from someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting things done is what you do so well. But be careful not to overtax your energy reserves. Take time out to relax or to do something different to help keep them at optimum levels. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) This is a good time to satisfy the Moon Child’s growing sense of wanderlust. Choose a really special place to go to, with a very special person to share it all with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You love being in the spotlight. But be careful it doesn’t blind you to the truth behind a seemingly wonderful opportunity. Look closer and you might be sadly surprised at what you find. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Isn’t it time to take a break from your hectic schedule? Sure it is. And the sooner you do, the sooner you can return fresh and more than ready to take on all those new projects. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent family incident can help bring everyone closer, and there’s no one who’s better at making that happen than you. Accept (indeed, insist on!) help from others to get things off and running. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Long-held habits are often difficult to break. But the change from how you always did things to how you can do them now can be liberating. So, be flexible and give it a try. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone you met in your professional world last year and thought you would never hear from again could make a sudden reappearance in your life, along with an interesting offer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Once again, you delight everyone by coming up with a solution for a problem that actually works. On another note, it’s not too early to get started on those travel plans. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Before you go ahead with finalizing your plans for your new project, check them over to see if you can make some improvements or if you can find ways to cut costs. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Fabulous Fish might have been out of the social swim for too long, and it’s time you plunge back in. Reinforce your old friendships and be open to starting new ones. BORN THIS WEEK: Your creative talents help bring beauty to the world and the people in it. On their behalf, thank you.

Many thanks to Northside Salvage Co. in East Rochester! You delivered as promised, for which I am much grateful. Sorry this “shout out” recognizing your reliable business took so long to submit, but here it finally is. We came to you looking for a real spare tire, not a ‘donut’. For a Christmas present last year, we received a gift card from a popular restaurant/bar in [local town]. Shortly thereafter, they closed for renovations. We anxiously awaited their reopening. Finally, we were able to stop for lunch. The new owner refused to accept our gift card. We were not aware it was under new management. We do know Sherry would have done anything to retain us as a customer. Sadly, we will not darken the doorway of this establishment again. Hope the new owner brings all new clientele; he will need them if he is to remain in business. On November 7th, I was lucky enough to shoot a nice 8-point buck. I was going to mount the antlers

There was a mix up with the inventory, and it was at your Buffalo lot, though you promised home delivery nicely wrapped in plastic the next day. Being short on time and purchasing other used car parts from the Northside Salvage Co. before, I had no doubt about paying in advance and trusting your company. People waste so much money on new parts when they can support a local business that has a great reputation and just about every screw, bolt, mirror, hubcap, and tire they need. Northside Salvage, thank you very

much, cheers to a safe and healthy year to all of you and your families. Your hard work is gratefully appreciated. Toni – East Rochester

on a plaque because they were quite large. On November 8th, the butcher called and said my deer was cut up. I picked it up and on the way home stopped at [local] grocery store to get a few things. The meat and head were in the back of my truck. When I came out of the store the head was gone! Why would you steal it? When you mount it, tell your friends that’s the one you stole from the grocery store parking lot. The tag was on the antlers. If you would like to return it, I’d appreciate it, but I doubt you will.

The bride spends all the holidays with her family and forgets his! This is very selfish and crosses the line to just plain mean when your husbands have only one surviving parent. What do you suppose that parent does for the day? Seriously, are the people who raised the man you love so awful? I won’t even go into how sad it is when grandchildren are involved. Take a minute to take stock of your holidays. Are you respectful and inclusive of your husband’s families, or are you guilty of this behavior? Once you’re finished with all the excuses as to why you don’t go there, take time to put on your big girl pants and go act like a considerate adult. You can set a good example for the kids. At least give your husband time to take the kids for a visit.

Attention Daughter-inLaw! Your husbands have families, too! I am seeing more and more one-sided holiday arrangements.

Our Forefathers who drafted and signed the United States Constitution were geniuses! The U.S. Constitution is the perfect model for a Republic Democracy, “...govt. of the people, by the people, and for the people.” To do away with what the U.S. Constitution states would be to undermine the human intelligence and drive to make and keep America the best country to live in in the

world! It is okay to disagree with others, but when it’s carried so far that it hurts others you disagree with, then it isn’t okay. You cannot make everyone happy, as humans are all different, and not one individual human is the same as another. This is a good thing! Thanks to the Red Cross for installing two new smoke detectors in my home. I’m sleeping much better at night. Geneseo Senior Citizen

Enough is Enough about wheelchair rights! Please get off it. With all the horrific things happening in the world, move on about being an adult in a wheelchair and being treated like one. Be happy if someone is considerate and takes the time to try to help or assist someone they may think needs assistance. This could be anyone, and not necessarily someone in a wheelchair. If you don’t want the help, then tell them so. Simple as that. Stop this obsessing about whether it is an assault or someone feeling “pity” for you. I thank God that my mother was a dignified and gracious woman (in a motorized wheelchair) who had enough common sense to know how to deal with someone trying to assist her. Get a life!

ONLY BINGO LEFT IN BATAVIA!

Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time. Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually w orking their w ay up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.

Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee a Family Resource Hub By Amanda Dudek

H

ow do you connect with local resources, groups and events when finding each one is like a new page in Where’s Waldo?

This is the challenge Michelle Waters faced as a 19-year-old, young mother, looking for support and community connection for her family. She knew it was out there, but was there a resource for finding these things in Genesee and Orleans Counties which stretch between Rochester and Buffalo? Until last year, the answer was a resounding, “No.” At that time, Waters had to get through by figuring most of it out on her own, but the experience launched her search. Some years later, she found Macaroni Kid, an online community with “two very specific goals: enrich communities and empower moms,” according the Macaroni Kid website. “I just started searching for something like it,” said Waters. “I saw the void and wanted to fill it. Macaroni Kid stuck out to me as being the most community-oriented. They had the most for me to connect with as a publisher and are a nationally recognized brand which makes it easier to connect.” Macaroni Kid is a national brand with over 500 “editions” nationwide. Each edition has its own publisher, usually a local parent, who runs and develops it. “It is a hyper local resource for parents,” explained Waters. “We have an event calendar with everything that is going on in the area such as library events, events at businesses, organizations, resource information and festivals. It is free for the community to use, and we send out a weekly e-newsletter with events, highlights, recipes and more to over 1,000 subscribers.”

a full Christmas to twelve families in need. “It was amazing,” she said. “My husband and I had a cargo van loaded full of gifts. We spent nearly six hours delivering Christmas gifts all over Genesee and Orleans Counties. There were so many children, and some people had even given presents for the moms, too.” Waters is thankful to have been a part of it all. “That is what lights me up for Christmas, for sure,” she shared. “I just feel really grateful, and I am so happy that these are the kind of At our Halloween party at Dance Reflections people who are reading my with the costume swap! writing. A lot of what these families asked for were necessities, too,” she clarified. “How could we not help?” A successful holiday season behind them, Macaroni Kid OrleansGenesee looks forward to a bright future in the new year. “I am definitely thinking we will have something for Easter,” said Waters. “We would like to have a Valentine’s Day exchange, but that may start next year.” Waters also plans to hold a Halloween costume swap event again this fall. “We exchanged gently pre-loved costumes,” she said. “That was really fun.” Meanwhile, Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee subscriber and follower numbers continue to climb, and Waters knows why. “It is amazing to have all the information in one spot...for you, for your town, from someone who lives in and is from your area,” she explained. “We also do giveaways for the subscribers and highlight local businesses as much as possible because keeping your money where you live impacts all of us.”

Michelle Waters with her son!

For Waters, it is not about the numbers; however, it is about the community. “I run my chapter trying to better the community as much as I can,” she said. “I want parents, including moms, dads and grandparents to know they are welcome and that they can find information here. It gives me a platform to run things like Project Christmas Magic.”

Throughout 2020, Michelle will continue to fill her edition with local, useful information for families. “We are a tribe of like-minded people,” she said. “We are in this together and all in the same boat. If I can save you just a little time in your day, I will feel like I did something worthwhile.” To learn more, visit www.orleansny.macaronikid.com or email Michelle Waters at michellewaters@macaronikid.com.

Project Christmas Magic is a holiday giving project which Waters started years before launching Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee. This past Christmas, she launched the project again to great success. “It had lost traction, but then I saw people asking for resources,” recalled Waters. “I wanted to do anything I could to help.”

Waters created two posts on Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee. “In one post, I asked who would be willing to sponsor a family or buy gifts,” she said. Waters didn’t specify a minimum or a maximum amount. “I left it up to the people who wanted to sponsor,” she explained. “I didn’t want to take it over too much, and I didn’t want anyone to feel like whatever they could do wasn’t enough. I just let it flow.”

Her second post asked for anyone needing help to put in a request. “Then, I matched them up, and it worked out pretty well,” Waters said. “So many people were so, so generous it was unbelievable.” Thanks to the Macaroni Kid community, Waters and her husband were able to deliver

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
