Congratulations, Gary! A $50 donation will be made to a local animal shelter in Gary’s name. Sponsored by these local businesses!
1-855-681-3113
Gary was found as a stray five years ago, and given to his owners, knowing they would take good care of him. He’s known as a “gentle giant”, weighing 18 pounds. Gary enjoys napping, snuggling, meeting new people, & playing with his four brothers and sister cats. Although he shares his owners’ time with other furry friends, he will always have a special place in their hearts.
“Brenda is a wonderful person and excellent groomer. She absolutely loves all animals. She does an excellent job trimming and taking care of her fur customers!”

AUTO SECTION
DID YOU KNOW? Through the years, cars have evolved so much that certain parts once integral to their operation have now become obsolete. Only time will tell which components and features of today’s cars will disappear in the future. However, present drivers can reminisce about how cars have evolved even in the last 20 to 30 years. The following are some once-standard parts and features that have all but disappeared from modern vehicles. Ashtrays and cigarette lighters: Smoking-related accessories began to vanish as the dangers of smoking became more apparent. Ashtrays in the dashboard and in the rear armrests are no longer standard. Full-sized spare tire: The “doughnuts” of today can be driven on for only limited distances and look awkward on larger vehicles. The full-sized spare enabled drivers to repair the flat tire on their own schedules. Control knobs: Push buttons and digital dashes have replaced the manual knobs of the past. Levers often enabled drivers to adjust the heat without taking their eyes off the road. Bench seats: Front bench seats have given way to two seats separated by a center console. No longer is it possible to fit three or four people in the front of a vehicle. Whip antenna: Remember those thin, flexible antennas? Many modern vehicles feature more solid antennas that can be unscrewed for trips through the carwash or an antenna that is modeled into the car in an inconspicuous way. If drivers exhibit a preference for satellite radio in the years ahead, traditional antennas may soon become obsolete as well.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Circulation Manager .................................Shari Rapone
Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Caledonia Scouts Honored by Assemblywoman Byrnes By Amanda Dudek
F
ive former Caledonia seniors from Troop 4027 recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout, an impressive feat in a class of 64 students. Eagle Scouts Brenden Gardner and Matt Keller were honored in September 2019 while the remaining three celebrated at the Big Springs Museum on Saturday, January 11th. New York State Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes and Monroe County Legislator Steve Brew attended this Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony. Both Byrnes and Brew respectively presented each Eagle Scout with a certificate recognizing their accomplishment. These three young men - Brice Hatch, Evan Maniscalco and Ryan Pelkey - became Eagle Scouts, completing their respective projects and passing the Eagle Board. “Matt Keller built a firewood storage Unit for the Genesee Country Village & Museum’s maple sap evaporator,” said Troop 4027 Scoutmaster Hatch. “Brenden Gardner painted inside the Eunice Lodge in Caledonia. Ryan Pelkey constructed a turtle enclosure, including a fence, viewing area and pool at the Genesee Country Village & Museum.” “My son Brice built two benches along Oatka Park hiking trails in Scottsville,” continued Hatch. “He also planted 100 trees, 50 white spruce and 50 sycamores. Evan Maniscalco built and installed two Little Free Libraries at the Genesee Country Village Nature Center.” “Each Scout needs to plan and facilitate a project as part of their Eagle Scout requirement,” explained Hatch. “They typically receive help in completing their project from fellow Scouts, friends and family.” Each project requires approximately 100 service hours and is one of the final things a Life Scout must do to complete their Eagle Scout application before turning 18.

Little Library designs online, and we picked one we felt would work well.” Of course, the project was not without its challenges. “Building them was the biggest challenge,” explained Maniscalco. “[The plans] weren’t super detailed, so we had to take some liberties on the designs to get it to work better. It wasn’t super hard, but it definitely took a lot of brain power.” The only installation snag was along the Geology Trail where the ground is harder and rockier. The project was a success. “They were very happy,” affirmed Maniscalco, referring to the museum. Maniscalco’s family first introduced him to Boy Scouts, bringing him to his older brother’s Cub Scout meetings before moving away. “My family pushed for it,” he said. “I wasn’t really sure.” It was Maniscalco’s grandfather who helped him make his decision. “He said he would help me out along the way,” he recalled. “He would drive about an hour to where the meetings were, which was right across the street from where I lived. It was really nice of him. He didn’t have to, but he did that for me.” Maniscalco loved the Scouts, making new friends in a new town. “It was a great opportunity and experience for me,” he shared. “I got swept up in the whole thing, and next thing you know, I was working on my Eagle project.”
New York Assemblywoman Byrnes honors Caledonia Eagle Scouts! (l-r) Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes, Ryan Pelkey, Brice Hatch & Evan Maniscalco
There are several ranks in the Boy Scouts: Cub, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. “Only about 4% of Scouts reach Eagle level, so it is quite the accomplishment,” said Hatch. “This is a good group of young men, and they worked very hard.” Project choices are largely up to the individual Scout.
Being recognized by Assemblywoman Byrnes and Legislator Steve Brew was an unexpected privilege. “I was honored that they came,” said Maniscalco. “I was really surprised. No one told me beforehand, so when they came up and made their speeches, I was like, ‘Wow!’ This is awesome.” As for joining Boy Scouts, Evan Maniscalco recommends it, crediting his parents’ support and noting that his Scout friends are some the best he has. “I think the image portrayed by the media and in movies of scouting isn’t accurate,” he said. “They show people just going into the woods and doing goofy, little camping stuff. The things I learned, I really couldn’t find anywhere else, and it was definitely worth it. It helped me grow into a man.”
“Brice’s grandparents lives very close to Oatka Creek Park, and he wanted to do something to help her and the community,” Hatch shared. “He built two benches so that if his grandparents wanted to go for a walk and sit down on one of these benches and take a breather, they could.”

Evan Maniscalco described his Eagle Scout project. “I built two Little Free Libraries for the Genesee Country Village and Museum,” he said. “The one on the Geology Trail will have books related to geology, rocks, fossils and the like. The other one, next to Ryan Pelkey’s turtle enclosure, will have books about nature, turtles and other animals in the area.”

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Install a low-flow shower head. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that eco-conscious consumers looking to reduce their energy consumption install lowflow shower heads with flow rates less than 2.5 gallons per minute. This is especially important for people living in homes with dated fixtures. Water fixtures installed before 1992 might have flow rates as high as 5.5 gallons per minute, which is both wasteful and costly. Test the flow of a shower head by placing a one-gallon bucket beneath a shower head running at the pressure you normally use. If the bucket fills up in less than 20 seconds, install a low-flow shower head.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 2020
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You need to be certain that all the right conditions are in place before you take that first step. It can’t hurt to listen to good advice from those who have your best interests at heart. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to get involved in other people’s disputes unless you know the facts behind the disagreements. That’s the best way to be assured of making wise and honest decisions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You still need to be careful about how you’re going to spend those energy reserves you finally got around to restoring. Best advice: Avoid overdoing it. Let things take their course. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect continues to favor travel -- alone or with that special person. So if you’ve been putting off making those getaway plans, it’s still a good time to get started on them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Those so-called golden opportunities that continue to dazzle the Lion still need to be carefully checked out. Be suspicious about anything that looks like the “perfect” prospect. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Changes at the workplace could make it more difficult to do things the way you prefer. But the wise Virgo who shows some flexibility could find it paying off in a big way. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might want to check out the explanation you were given for a sudden shift in your duties. There’s a possibility that you haven’t been told all the facts that you deserve to know. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Having confidence in your abilities is important, especially when you could be facing a new challenge, whether it’s in the workplace or in a personal relationship. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new work-related opportunity might not be all that it seems. Before making any decisions, you might want to check with others who have had some experience in that area. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A situation involving someone close could benefit from your timely intervention. Avoid being judgmental. There’ll be plenty of time later for those “little talks” you like to have. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel could be a surprise element in that new project. Be prepared for other previously undisclosed aspects that also might come to light as you proceed with the work. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Try to balance your work-related responsibilities with the time you’re spending on your recently revived social life. An old friend might be planning to return after a long absence. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sensitivity makes you aware of the needs of others. Have you considered a career as a counselor?

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD
WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION
Host your own welcome party Rather than waiting around for others to welcome you to the neighborhood, take the bull by the horns and introduce yourself to your neighbors in a fun way. Host an open house party and invite your new neighbors. What better way to converse with others than with food, beverages and a festive atmosphere? Plus, your party may lead to reciprocation from others.
(NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection.

The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. Can Chocolate Worsen Irregular Heartbeat?
by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
BAD BREATH & GUM DISEASE
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 82 years old and still very active. I have had an irregular heartbeat for four years, and sometimes I feel lightheaded, dizzy or tired. I worry about it getting worse. Would you please give a detailed explanation about irregular heartbeat, including how or why it happens? What should I do to prevent it from getting worse? Is it life threatening? Will it become atrial fibrillation? Also, I am a chocolate lover and eat dark chocolate every day. But I was told that cocoa will make my irregular heartbeat worse and I should stop eating dark chocolate. Is that true? -- Q.Y. ANSWER: Everyone has irregular heartbeats from time-to-time. Early beats can come from electrically active areas anywhere in the heart, and an electrocardiogram can tell whether they are from the atria (the top chambers) or the ventricles (the bottom chambers) of the heart. An average person may have 500 or so of these a day -- some people have many more. Most are seldom aware of them. Having patients with this concern over and over during my career, I can reassure you that most cases turn out to be nothing to worry about. However, the fact that you are having symptoms, especially the lightheadedness and fatigue, is a warning sign, and I recommend you get an evaluation. Start with your regular medical provider, after which you may be referred to a cardiologist. The EKG in his or her office is a first step, but you may need a longer evaluation, such as wearing a 24-hour EKG (a Holter monitor) or newer technologies that allow longer readings. Atrial fibrillation is a concern, because most people will need treatment to reduce stroke risk or to return the rhythm to normal. Nevertheless, there are many other kinds of irregular heart rhythms, and you need a diagnosis first. If no cause is found, there are medications to reduce the irregularity, but they are seldom used. My experience is that when a person knows they are not dangerous, they can be lived with more easily. Chocolate does contain theobromide, a substance that can make the heart a little more irritable, but it takes a lot of chocolate to have a significant effect. It’s related to caffeine in coffee. Interestingly, a recent study found that chocolate lovers are less likely to develop atrial fibrillation, so the situation is more complex than just one chemical.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Explore poaching, broiling and grilling. Poaching, broiling and grilling are three healthy alternatives to frying. Broiling and grilling expose food to direct heat, so it is a fast method of cooking and may not be appropriate for foods that require longer cooking times to tenderize. Poaching is the process of simmering foods in water or another flavorful liquid.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that drinking warm lemon water with honey has many health benefits, partially because lemons are an alkaline food. Is this correct? -- B.W. ANSWER: I think I saw the same article. Lemon water may have some health benefits, but it is not an alkaline food, and drinking it has almost no impact on the acidity of your blood or urine, because the body’s buffer systems (the chemical processes used to keep the pH carefully regulated) are so effective. Lemons have a pH of about 2, so they are highly acidic. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) makes the urine more acidic. There is no consistent evidence that the foods we eat have a health benefit due solely to their effect on body pH. Many of the foods recommended for their supposed alkaline effects are indeed healthy, but for other, complex reasons apart from pH. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Trees Not Tombstones: New Options For End-of-Life (NAPS)—The vast majority of Americans have not completed their end-of-life planning. In fact, over half of those age 45-plus have done no end-of-life planning at all, according to a recent survey conducted by Better Place Forests, the country’s first sustainable alternative to cemeteries for families that choose cremation. Better Place Forests hopes the idea of a beautiful, sustainable final resting place will encourage people to create those plans. Instead of tombstones, the company incorporates ashes into the base of beautiful trees in permanently protected forests. The company performs spreading ceremonies in the forest, where families can gather to say goodbye. Currently, there are two forests in California, in Point Arena in Mendocino County and in Santa Cruz, and the company plans to open more across the country. There is a growing trend toward greener burial options in the United States. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, nearly 54 percent of Americans are considering a green burial and 72 percent of cemeteries report an increased demand for green burials. Thousands of people have already reserved trees for themselves. “Making plans and establishing guidelines for the end of your life means that loved ones don’t have to guess about your wishes and you can give them the experience you’d like them to have when you pass,” explained Sandy Gibson, CEO of Better Place Forests. “At Better Place Forests, we talk to people every day who find peace in knowing they have created a beautiful experience for their loved ones by selecting a family tree.” Beyond providing a more beautiful final resting place, choosing a tree in one of these memorial forests means you are leaving a legacy of conservation. The company performs spreading ceremonies in the forest, where families can gather to say goodbye and continue to visit—a feature current cremation options can’t provide. The trusts also actively manage the land to ensure that it’s less susceptible to forest fires. They hire forestry experts to keep the trees healthy and the forests free of invasive species. In addition, more trees are planted in areas in need for every tree a customer chooses. Thousands of trees have already been planted in forests devastated by the California wildfires. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.betterplaceforests.com. A beautiful forest can be a final resting place that brings comfort to family and friends.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST * On Feb. 4, 1913, Rosa Parks is born Rosa Louise McCauley in Tuskegee, Alabama. Parks’ name has become synonymous with her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in 1955. * On Feb. 6, 1928, a woman calling herself Anastasia Tschaikovsky and claiming to be the youngest daughter of the murdered Russian czar Nicholas II Romanov arrives in New York City. It wasn’t until 1994 that Anastasia’s DNA showed her to be Franziska Schanzkowska, a Polish-German factory worker.
(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. Though Law Enforcement Appreciation Day has passed, it is not too late to thank the men and women who put a uniform on every day to protect and serve. Saturday afternoon, I was sitting in my living room in Webster. As I looked out the window, I saw a man riding his bike. On People need to seriously start picking up the poop from their dogs! I am so tired of, and disgusted by, dog poop all over the place, including my front lawn. I have a large dog that I walk every day, and I 100% pick up after him. You know who you are; stop it! After reading about a disruptive child in a checkout line especially when the child tried to steal personal property and was messing with the cash register, I have to wonder why this cashier did not immediately call for the manager to come to the front of the store and handle this situation. That is one of the responsibilities of a store or front-end manager. Does anyone in the [local town] know what a stop sign is or how to stop? I realize that you think GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On Sunday, January 26, Riga Recreation held its annual “WinterFest” in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville-Chili School District and the Monroe County Parks Department at the Churchville Elementary School. The Lions, once again, sold out their “World Famous” Chicken BBQ, and there were carnival games, airbrush tattoos, caricature drawings, and a bounce house in the gymnasium. directionals are optional, but stop signs are not. Also, while waiting to go over the one bridge we have, don’t park across people’s driveways. Finally, to those who buy their coffee at the little shop in the village, stop parking where it is not a parking spot, so that anyone handicapped can’t enter other businesses. Can any of you be considerate?
all. Maybe this is one reason why so many restaurants and businesses are going under. The added costs to do any kind of business in New York State are outrageous! Add to this the lack of any customer service, and it would equal disaster and fewer jobs. Minimum wage goes up; then all prices go up, so no one gains anything in the end. Having no state income tax would help.
Far too many chain restaurants are forgetting about good customer service, i.e. good wait staff etiquette, and worrying about profit over customers. If you’ve ever learned economics in school, when they used to actually teach basic life skills as part of the regular curriculum, you would have learned that without customers to serve, you have no money, and no profit is made at
Please, please, please, if you put garbage out for collection, be considerate of your neighbors and do your best to make sure your bins don’t tip! Every time garbage day is windy, my yard ends up strewn with wind-blown trash and recycling. If people simply took a little more care with how they fill and place their bins, I wouldn’t be stuck picking up and disposing of someone else’s garbage.

Weeks before Christmas, I had put up my Christmas lights on my house on a typical village street. At dark, I went outside and stood on the sidewalk, inspecting the joy when I heard footfalls in the snow on the street and saw that a woman was jogging toward me. Simple courtesy called for some kind of acknowledgment, and I smiled and said hello, not thinking that a man standing on a sidewalk at dusk could appear sketchy. Immediately, she got an unpleasant look, muttered something unpleasant and sprinted away down the street. I felt bad instantly for making her uncomfortable. I understand, and her reaction wasn’t wrong, but it’s a shame that a simple smile and hello can cause fear or discomfort. The world got a little colder for me that day.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.
