INTERIOR PAINTING “Look at your walls...
DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Update window treatments to compensate for dropping temperatures. Trade your sheers for sturdy, draft-blocking panels. * To easily get keys on a keychain, use a staple remover to create an opening to slip the keys on. It is very effective and will keep you from getting frustrated. * When hammering a nail, try this save-your-finger trick: Use a clothespin to hold the nail steady, and then use your hammer to drive it in. Hammering into the wall? Push the nail through a strip of cardboard, and then hold the cardboard over the right spot. No more banged-up fingers or thumbs! * “At a party, someone spilled a cup of red wine on one of my throw pillows. I love the pillow, since it is just the right size and really soft, but I could not get the stain out. So I covered it with a new fabric. I ended up doing all the assorted pillows in the same fabric, and it made a big change in the room. I wish I had done it sooner.” -- I.F. in Pennsylvania * Bringing some plants indoors? Use styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of pots when planting. They aren’t as heavy as rocks, but they do just as good a job. It makes the pots easier to move around should you need to. * “For easy-cleanup pancakes, use a turkey baster to ‘squirt’ the batter in the griddle or skillet. No drips, and it usually results in a pretty good circle, too!” -- A.J. in Florida GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER According to the automotive retailer Pep Boys, vehicle tires lose a pound of air pressure for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Many modern cars will alert to changes in air pressure, and drivers should be diligent in maintaining the proper tire pressure. Fuel economy as well as handling ability can decline when tires are not inflated properly. Tires can be refilled at many gas stations for little cost.
PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER As the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.

Now using environmentally friendly products!
Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Flamingos bend their legs at the ankle, not the knee. Their knees are closer to the body and covered by feathers. * The world’s largest waterfall, in the Denmark Strait between Iceland and Greenland, is underwater. * When Benjamin Franklin designed the first U.S. penny in 1787, it was emblazoned not with E Pluribus Unum, but “Mind Your Business.” * The tongue of a blue whale can weigh as much as an elephant.

Just yesterday I marveled at The burst of Autumn colors, The oranges, reds and yellows gave A lightshow like no other.
POLL
I ventured out to take some pics, To capture nature’s splendor, When looking up, instead of down, I abruptly met my car’s front fender.
Having vanquished Kansas City in a very strong fashion, is Buffalo a serious contender? Will Buffalo go all the way?
Nose-to-stones upon the ground, I could hear my father’s voice, “Try looking where you’re going, huh?” It would’ve been the smarter choice.
• Yes, absolutely! • No way!
So, I slowly climbed back to my feet, Got my camera, which had gone sailing, I dusted off and straightened myself, Seems my pride was all that was ailing. But nature’s beauty spurred me on, My determination undeterred, So I kept on with my photo shoot, This fleeting beauty must be preserved. And then, last night, high winds and rain Which howled, poured and repeated, Gave way today to quite a different scene, So much vibrant color depleted. Another of nature’s lessons learned, That nothing seems to last, So get out there and take those pics, ‘Cause it’ll all be gone too fast!

PROTECTING YOUR VISION FROM DIABETES (NAPSI)—Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined— and can cause serious problems throughout the body. According to the National Eye Institute, eye health, for example, can become critically compromised.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Ticks Plague This Playful Bulldog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t get it. My bulldog “Chester” was out in the yard with me on a cool morning while I raked the first leaves of fall. When he came in, he had four ticks around his neck! They were hungry, too. I pulled the ticks off, but every time he goes outside now, he has one or more ticks burrowing into his fur. I thought cool weather causes ticks and fleas to die off. What’s happening? -- Burt G., Manchester, Vermont DEAR BURT: Believe it or not, tick (and flea) activity can increase in early fall. Temperatures are still warm enough for these pests to thrive, especially under fallen leaves and in high grass. And they’re always hungry, so they’ll latch onto a warm body as soon as they get the opportunity. You’re doing exactly the right thing to combat ticks. As soon as Chester comes inside, you’re checking his coat for ticks and removing them as soon as you see them. And you’re raking the leaves in the yard regularly so that they don’t build up. Here’s a few more things you can do that may reduce the number of ticks in your yard: -- Keep the grass mowed right up until the first hard frost. -- Cut back tall grasses and underbrush on your property. -- Move woodpiles away from the house. -- Don’t let Chester roll in the leaf piles, and block his access to untamed areas of brush or tall grasses. -- Use a flea-and-tick- prevention collar or treatment on Chester. Talk to his veterinarian about the best product to use. -- If heavy tick infestation doesn’t abate, consider treating your yard with a flea-and-tick spray made for this purpose. Around 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, are living with diabetes, with about 1.5 million more being diagnosed every year. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater his or her chances are of developing diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the blood vessels in the retina. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy.

While being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle are certainly linked to diabetes, social and environmental factors such as poverty, stress, and lack of safe housing and access to a healthy diet can also compromise your health and ultimately contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, addressing these social determinants of health has become a top priority for Medicaid programs. “We encourage our members with diabetes to have regular eye exams to rule out complications,” said Dr. Andrea Gelzer, senior vice president of medical affairs at AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need. “We educate our members so they understand that living a healthy lifestyle, controlling their blood sugar and having regular eye exams can help save their vision.” Simple steps can help mitigate the effects of diabetes and may potentially delay complications from diabetic eye disease, including controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, monitoring your cholesterol, seeing your doctor regularly, and having a dilated eye exam at least once per year—or more if recommended by your eye care professional.
WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection.
AmeriHealth Caritas is part of the Independence Health Group in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of the nation’s leaders in health care solutions for those most in need.
The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees.

NOW’S THE TIME TO
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Do We Really Need a Booster Shot?
Depending on when we went for the COVID vaccine, we could be eligible for the booster now ... or not. Elderly seniors, as well as those in nursing homes and the immunocompromised, were first in line early in the year. The rest of us straggled in over the next several months. At this point, it’s unknown whether there should be a six- or eight-month wait before the booster. The Pfizer booster (called Comirnaty) is now available to those 65 and older and some others depending on risk and medical conditions. At this writing, Moderna is asking for authorization, and there is no booster yet for the J&J vaccine. Do we actually need a booster? We’re all wondering (my pharmacist says half of their calls are about boosters), and the answers are a mixed bag. A pulmonary physician at a major university hospital said if we’re under 65 and relatively healthy, no, we don’t need one. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that the vaccines we already received will start to wear off, so yes, we should get the booster, starting with seniors and nursing-home residents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling for booster shots only for the immunocompromised, but not others. The World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on shots until poor countries get theirs. While we wait for real answers, keep your vaccine record card where you can find it. You’ll need it, should you decide to get a booster. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Extreme Flatulence Is Noxious, Embarrassing
by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
By Keith Roach, M.D.
DAY OR NIGHT GRINDING
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: In 2008, I had a partial sigmoid colectomy. Since then, I have had no recurrence of diverticulitis. The surgeon recommended that I not use laxatives, but rather take fiber gummies to keep things moving easily in addition to drinking lots of fluids. I am doing that, but my flatulence could power all the homes in a small city. It is difficult to control outbursts, which are noxious and embarrassing in the extreme. Is there any other way to avoid hard stools, straining and other unhealthy gastrointestinal situations? -- J.S. ANSWER: I am sorry for your embarrassment, but I agree with the surgeon that getting fiber and plenty of water is the safest and best way to prevent problems. However, maybe it isn’t just the fiber, but your diet that is at least partially responsible for the increased gas. You could try reducing your intake of foods in the cabbage family, onions, beans, corn and other gas-producers. Avoid carbonated beverages and any beverage containing artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol. In some people, changing the bacteria that live in your gut (your microbiome) through probiotic supplements and a change of diet can reduce the amount of gas produced. There are other types of fiber supplements besides fiber gummies that might be better tolerated, or you can get fiber from food. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding, gnashing, or clenching teeth. Those with bruxism unconsciously clench or grind their teeth when awake and/or during sleep. Mild bruxism may not require treatment. However, in some patients, bruxism can be frequent and severe, leading to jaw disorders, headaches, and tooth damage. Combinations of physical, psychological, and genetic factors, including stress, age, personality type, prescription medications, family history, and disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, gastro esophageal reflux disorder (GERD), epilepsy, night terrors, sleep-related disorders such as sleep apnea, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are primary causes. Symptoms may include fractured, chipped or loose teeth;
worn enamel; pain or sensitivity; jaw, neck, face, or ear pain; dull headaches; and sleep disruption. MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier
(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath.

As a society and community, we could learn so much from just these few words. However, humans always seek proof, and perhaps one piece of evidence supporting the practice of charity and helping those in need is All Babies Cherished (ABC). All Babies Cherished is located in Batavia. It is a Christian-based, non-profit, community service organization that helps families prepare for their newborn child(ren) and also supports their current family.
The agency has been active within the Batavia community for twenty-five years. In fact, the organization reached its twentyfifth year this year and will celebrate its silver anniversary in upcoming weeks. According to Ms. Lucille DiSanto, a volunteer with the agency, ABC started “to help draw families to abortion alternatives,” whether that means helping them during the pregnancy and/or adoption. All Babies Cherished “does not discriminate against clients based on race, national origin, religion, age, marital status, or place of residence.” It strives to be a safe, secure, and non-judgmental place for families who seek support, not only regarding their children but also in other aspects of their lives. Zero, not here untrue You need to get your facts straight! Even if you are vaccinated, you can still carry and transmit Covid! You can still get Covid!! And yes, I’m vaccinated by my choice! I was recently in the ER. The nurse that took care of me was overworked, wonderful, and caring and had had Covid twice. What better immunity than your own body’s? It’s much better than any shot made by mankind. The problem is this virus keeps mutating, and no vaccine is going to keep you 100% safe from it. I’m a retired nurse, and I do understand what this means. So, it should remain a choice, not a mandate. Health care professionals continue to use PPE. You will not be cared for by anyone who is unprotected. Know what you are talking about before you attack an already taxed system. Also, if you are out in public, how do you know the person standing next to you is vaccinated?
S E V A R Yes, kindness matters I have experienced something similar while at a local park with my two granddaughters, ages 7 and 3. They wanted only to make new friends but were ignored and laughed at. It broke my heart when they cried, but I couldn’t blame the children involved. They’re only children. Rest assured, your granddaughter will make good friends at school and completely forget about this unfortunate incident. Still, I know it’s something that will tug at our heart strings for some time.
Give a poor man a bone Thanks to the kind lady with a dog named Tucker who gave me a ride home when my bike got a flat. Those two miles would have gotten the best of me.
Great customer service I’ve been to a lot of landscaping and garden centers, but Wayside in Macedon was by far the most helpful for a first-time gardener like myself. Jen was extremely knowledgeable but not at all overwhelming. I’m very excited to see my gardens in the springtime! Thanks again!
No profanity I fully support any citizen’s right to put a sign supporting their candidate of choice on their lawn or house, or to fly a flag showing what side of the political fence they sit. I don’t care who those signs support. Each one represents your personal opinion; it’s encouraging to see so many taking part in the democratic process. Few signs however have no place in public view in our town. One in particular does not support but rather denigrates an elected leader by means of the most obnoxious 4-letter word. Do you not realize that children may walk by on their way to school or the bus? Or out-of-towners who may drive by and think “what kind of community is this?” What about the public’s right to enjoy their town without being verbally insulted? So to residents who feel it necessary to display their opinions in such vulgar terms, I politely ask you to take them down. Show that you care more about healing our community than dividing it. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Hero to zero? You have no right to judge anyone. There is a wide variety of reasons for refusing the [vaccine],and none of them are your business! You aren’t questioning why the healthcare professionals are refusing this? [Stay home!] I sure hope you or a loved one wont need any of those “zeroes “ you mention because the worst healthcare crisis in any of our lifetimes is headed our way.
Pay it forward Thank you to the kind person who bought our coffee at the drive thru last week. Little acts like these make someone’s day!

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
