Apple bobbing is one autumn tradition that involves the use of apples. Despite the popularity of apple bobbing around Halloween, some historians believe the tradition of bobbing for apples is rooted in love and romance and has little to do with trick-or-treating. According to History.com, apple bobbing began as a courting ritual. While the rules of the game varied, the idea was to attempt to bite into the apple named for the young man the woman desired. This method of courting eventually became less popular, but bobbing for apples was resurrected in the early 20th century when Americans who traced their roots to Ireland and England began playing the game at Halloween parties.

Every employer must be prepared to conduct fair and impartial investigations into employee complaints and allegations of misconduct. This responsibility includes carefully examining the facts and circumstances, thoughtfully considering the evidence, and reaching reasonable conclusions. The results of poorly conducted workplace investigations–which can be devastating to the individuals involved as well as the company–often include: continued workplace misconduct; retaliation; formal complaints against the employer filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), lawsuits; and even personal liability for management, HR, and anyone conducting investigations. This course will include a review of the laws, regulations, and employer obligations related to workplace investigations, as well as a discussion of the importance of following a consistent and thorough workplace complaint investigation process. Participants will have an opportunity to develop a complaint response plan, investigation plan and timeline, and interview questions, and work through a mock investigation. Objectives: 1. A better understanding of the laws, regulations, and obligations related to workplace investigations 2. Internal vs. external workplace investigations, and when each may be appropriate 3. Developing a complaint response plan and basic investigation plan 4. How to conduct an effective workplace investigation 5. The importance of reaching a conclusion with every investigation Fee $119 • GCC Batavia Campus Friday, 11/8 • 9:00 am-4:00 pm (1 hour lunch break on your own) Register by Thursday, October 31, 2019

Our Beautiful Woodward Library of LeRoy By Tim Malley

Seasoned Firewood For Sale

T

he Woodward library sets itself apart from other libraries in Western New York with its beauty and magnificence. With its Greek Neoclassical design, when you view the Woodward Library from afar, it looks like the stately buildings of the late 19th century. The Woodward Library was finished on May 29th, 1930, but the Neoclassicists were trying to revive the architecture of ancient Greece. The Woodward Library, located on 7 Wolcott Street in LeRoy, still has the earmarks of Neoclassicalism in its architecture. At the time, it was all the rage to imitate ancient Greek design, and nowhere is this more telling and relevant than the Woodward Library building with its Doric columns which hold up and support this fantastic piece of architecture. In fact, the white marble columns seem to shine and radiate like a precious diamond. Every time one walks up the steps of this great library, one also feels as though they’re about to walk into an ivy league institution; it’s really that special.

Once inside the Woodward Library, one encounters a helpful and courteous staff which w i l l assist y o u w it h finding a book, a DVD, a CD or an audiobook. They will offer assistance in using the computers and offer guests the opportunity to take part in a fun skill group. There’s also a movie night at the Woodward Library for those interested; movies are shown once a month. However, for those who just want to take their time reading the newspaper, a cup of hot coffee or tea is available for just one dollar as they sit in a comfortable chair and just read and read to their heart’s content.

Betsy Halvorsen, the director of the Woodward Library, does an amazing job, and so does the rest of the staff. The Woodward Library is such a great asset to the community of LeRoy. It hosts and sponsors special events such as Desserts in the Stacks. For those looking to enhance their intellectual capabilities by being that curious lifelong learner and those who would rather simply sit back in a comfortable chair and read the newspaper or a magazine (including dozens of magazines from Field and Stream to the New Yorker) while drinking a hot cup of coffee or tea, come to the Woodward Library. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Caution dominates the Sheep’s monetary aspect this week. Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new career-changing phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You’ll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. This makes you excel at getting things done the right way.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe lower back pain and can’t stand up straight or walk very well. I saw a back specialist, and he took X-rays and reviewed an MRI. He informed me nothing could be done for me because I have diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). I would like to know what this is and why nothing can be done for me. -- Anon. ANSWER: DISH is essentially a disease of bone spurs. The ligaments and their attachments to bone themselves become calcified and bonelike. The cause is unknown. Symptoms are commonly back pain (more often, middle or upper back, not the lower back pain you have), but pain also may occur in the neck. Problems with walking are not common, but can happen if a nerve is being compressed. Surgery is not a usual treatment for DISH. It is occasionally necessary if the bone spurs press on nerves or if the bone spurs are so large that they interfere with eating. That doesn’t mean nothing can be done for you. Physical therapy may be very beneficial; judicious pain medication and regular gentle exercise are the other effective treatments. If the difficulty standing straight and walking persist, you should get re-evaluated. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your take on the benefits versus risks of DMSO? -- W.R.

ANSWER: DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has only one use approved

We Care About ut

TAKING A HARD LINE ON SOFT DRINKS By now, most of us realize that sugary soft drinks (including soda, fruit juices, highly sweetened coffees, and other sources of liquid sugar) are linked to weight gain, obesity, insulin resistance (a primary feature of metabolic syndrome), type 2 diabetes, the possibility of an increased risk for heart disease, and a higher risk of cancer. These potential adverse health consequences of excessive sugary liquid consumption stand alongside the well-known fact that sugary soda not only provides easily digestible energy for the bacteria that cause tooth decay, but it also contains phosphoric and carbonic acids that make teeth vulnerable to decay. With all this in mind, it is best to get children used to drinking non-sugary liquids as early as infancy.

quality oral care, This is why we provide them with dietary information that can help save them from the hazards of sugary, bodyunfriendly substances that can wreak havoc with their health, gentle treatment procedures, and outstanding continuing care. Our fullservice, state-of-the-art office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we have office hours by appointment. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. “Baby bottle tooth decay” occurs as a result of leaving sweetened liquids, including milk, formula, and fruit juice, to cling to an infant’s teeth during sleep when saliva flow decreases.

by the Food and Drug Administration, in people with interstitial cystitis, where it is directly instilled into the bladder. It is also used (off-label, meaning without an official FDA indication) as a recovery treatment when the tube delivering some types of chemotherapy comes out of the vein. DMSO may have a pain-relieving effect, both topically when applied, as well as in the brain, though the mechanism for this is unclear. DMSO is an antioxidant and opens pores in lipid membranes, but again it’s unclear how this relates to its possible effects on people’s symptoms. It is an interesting and difficult-to-study compound. It is exceedingly permeable: Within five minutes of being applied to skin, it is detectable in the blood. It has a distinct flavor and odor that can be noticed after application to the skin, which makes doing a controlled trial difficult; subjects in a study find it very easy to know whether or not they have been given DMSO. It’s estimated that people have spent billions of dollars on DMSO for other conditions, especially arthritis and inflammatory diseases. However, the evidence that it is effective is poor, largely because of the difficulty in doing good studies on this compound, but also because large-scale studies are very expensive and there is little enthusiasm on performing such studies on a cheap compound. The risks appear to be small. Apart from the taste and smell changes, there are rare reports of allergies, discomfort in the bladder after instillation there and possible damage to the eye lens (at least in animals). You didn’t tell me what condition you are considering DMSO for, but except in the case of interstitial cystitis (where there are other therapies more likely to be effective), given uncertain benefits, I don’t recommend DMSO despite the low risk of harm. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Light Hill in Canandaigua, New York, is looking for volunteers interested in caring for terminally ill residents, their families and loved ones. We provide end of life care training that includes seven classroom sessions (approximately 6 weeks to complete) followed by hands-on “shadowing” prior to caring for our resident guests. Light Hill is a two-bed comfort care home, full of light and positive energy. Our home is an alternative to a nursing home, hospital, or home care. Our primary focus is providing a peaceful quality existence at endof-life guided by the hospice philosophy. Our goal is to support our resident guests as they experience physical, emotional and spiritual changes, as well as support their loved ones. Classes will start mid-October and end before Thanksgiving. If you have a caring heart and are interested in learning more about Light Hill, please contact: Volunteer Coordinator, Crystal Martin, at Lighthillvolco@ gmail.com, 585-393-1311 or 585-734-7651. Although apple bobbing still occurs today, many eschew the tradition because of germs. The concept of sticking one’s face into a communal bucket of water isn’t appealing in a society that prioritizes sanitary behavior. Those who grew up bobbing for apples and want to continue the tradition in a more sanitary way can create individualized games. Instead of one large bucket, purchase smaller buckets and fill them with water. Place a couple of apples in each bucket and let participants race to see who can grab an apple first.

(NAPS)—According to the American Cancer Society, about one in nine American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. More than 173,000 new diagnoses are expected in the U.S. this year, fortunately, this disease can be treated successfully, especially if caught early. What To Do If you’re 50 or older or have a family history of prostate cancer, you should speak to your doctor about whether screening for the disease is right for you. Understanding Prostate Cancer “In the early stages, the most common symptoms of prostate cancer are no symptoms at all,” says Deepak A. Kapoor, M.D., founder of the non-profit, Integrated Medical Foundation, and President of Advanced Urology Centers of New York. There are four stages of prostate cancer. Stage one is diagnosed very early and confined to the prostate. At this stage, the patient is unlikely to be experiencing any symptoms. He may not need treatment beyond regular follow-up blood tests, exams and possibly biopsies. The disease is very treatable. When diagnosed early, the five-year relative survival rate is almost 100 percent. Why Do Some Men Resist Routine Screenings? Many men are embarrassed by the digital rectal exam, concerned about treatment or fear they can’t afford it. Some Answers Testing: Since the 1980s, prostate cancer was being diagnosed with a simple blood test, the PSA. It checks the level of prostate-specific antigen in your blood. In the past, there was controversy about whether having a prostate cancer screening done was beneficial or if it produced more harmful effects due to complications from over-testing. PSA testing was the best thing available for a long time. New tools now exist that provide much more information, giving predictability about the aggressiveness of the cancer and data to help urologists safely manage their patients’ disease. With this information, urologists have higher numbers of appropriate candidates on active surveillance regimens. Using tests such as the Gleason grade score, overall patient health and risk factors—age, race, ethnicity, family history and exposure to Agent Orange—urologists can determine with confidence how aggressive the cancer is and which patients will do well on active surveillance. They will also know which therapy options will be the most optimal for the patient. Making it easier for doctors and their patients to do this testing is the full-range of diagnostic equipment and supplies available through the trusted advisors at Henry Schein Medical, a provider of medical and surgical supplies to health care professionals. Treatments: There are many ways to treat prostate cancer, including hormone therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and cryoablation. The newest innovation being successfully utilized is immunotherapy, which uses your own immune system to identify, target and destroy the cancer cells without harming the body’s own “good cells.” Your doctor can help you decide what’s best for you. It is important to remember that you have the most options available when prostate cancer is diagnosed early and is in the most treatable stage. It is important for men to be vigilant with their routine screenings. Paying: Many insurance policies will pay for diagnostic tests and in some places, such as New York State, there’s no co-pay or co-insurance cost sharing responsibility for diagnostic prostate cancer screenings (with such policies). This puts PSAs on the same level as mammograms, thanks to efforts of advocates and doctors such as those at Advanced Urology Centers of New York, one of the largest urology group practices in the country. Learn More For further facts, visit the American Cancer Society at www.cancer. org and Integrated Medical Foundation (IMF) https://imfcares.org/. IMF provides screenings, education and support services FREE. Learning about prostate cancer early can save your life—and can be easier than many men realize.

* On Oct. 27, 2006, the last Ford Taurus rolls off the assembly line in Hapeville, Georgia. The keys to the silver car went to 85-year-old Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, who added it to his automobile collection. Apple bobbing has been linked to Samhain, the precursor to modern day Halloween. Celts believed apples could be used to determine if marriages would occur during a certain time of year. Young, unmarried people would attempt to bite into an apple floating in water or hanging from a string. The first to bite the apple would be the next to marry.

HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITIONS REVEALED Halloween is steeped in tradition. Halloween season also is a time of year when superstitions take root and add to the spooky and often silly nature of the holiday. Some Halloween traditions can be traced back to the ancient Celts and their belief that spirits of the deceased were able to wander the earth during the time they called Samhain. Costumes were worn so the living could blend in with ghosts, and treats were laid out to appease the spirits. Over the years, additional Halloween superstitions have emerged. Autumn bowed to place a beautiful crown on the Queen of Morning, and her velvet robes sway merrily in the chilly breeze.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver Evidently, it's not just humans who associate a deeper voice with maturity (and desirability) in males. It seems that male owls try to appear more macho and attract females by lowering the tone of their hoots.

Thank you to Toyota of Batavia, especially salesperson Christopher Brown, Director of Finance Anthony Gallo, and Sales manager Pat Rapone. Leadership starts from the top down, and it is extremely evident. My 84-year-old mother’s van broke down unexpectedly and she needed something fast without breaking her budget. The quality of empathy, mercy and kindness they showed walking her through the process from start to finish only took a day. They didn’t try to sell her on a car she couldn’t afford. We ended up with a brand new 2019 car, that when I looked at other dealerships were all

My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! I’m not “jumping” out of your way, if that’s your intention. I won’t speed up to accommodate you, and you won’t bully me into pulling over. I usually drive the speed limit, or maybe 5 mph over the limit, so it’s not like I’m crawling. On a 55-mph road with a sharp curve and the yellow recommended speed is 40, l won’t still do 55 because you are in a hurry. Is your impatience important enough to cause an accident? There are many reasons someone could hit their brakes. Please look further than the tip of your nose or the car’s bumper in front of it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business!

Responding to the comment that a handicapped person should welcome any assistance they are offered, whether requested or not: I am shocked! I am not an object for your pity. I am a person, endowed with the same rights as anyone else. I am quite capable on my own, but if I require assistance, I will ask for it. Touching me or my wheelchair, without my permission, is assault. It is against the law! Before you offer to “help” me, please wait for me to ask. Otherwise, you could find yourself explaining things to a policeman. I repeatedly asked for a VIP Empire Pass at my library, but it’s always out. I have been told a man checked it out in mid-June and still has

priced $5000 higher. I am a person that when I see a business treating people well, I tell others about them.

Thank you to the townships and the state for keeping the sides of the roads mowed. It helps to see deer and wildlife when driving at night and helps deter them from feeding at roadside. And in doing so, prevents deer-to-car accidents. It’s so nice to know our safety and the safety of the wildlife is still being kept in mind

it. Phone calls have not been returned; emails ignored. You may have saved some money, but all you really accomplished is to be known as a patron inconsiderate of others. It’s a privilege offered by NYS and the library system. It’s a shame you feel you’re owed this benefit more than others. You should be ashamed, but I doubt you are. Hoping this message shames you into returning the Pass and apologizing to the librarians who must keep telling other patrons they can’t help them.
