FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2019
The bright summer had passed away, and gorgeous autumn was flinging its rainbow-tints of beauty on hill and dale. ~Cornelia L. Tuthill, “Virginia Dare: Or, the Colony of Roanoke,” 1840
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of choices could make it difficult to select what is best for your needs. Avoid snap judgments. Take the time to check them all out to find the one that really meets your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You could once again experience pressure from others who would like to see you move in another direction. But heed your Bovine instincts to stay on your own path. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking charge of a project that seems to be about to stall or collapse altogether could be a challenge. But once everyone knows what you expect of him or her, things should go smoothly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid the pressures of the upcoming holiday period by setting a time right now to discuss how to divide up the responsibility of helping a loved one come through a difficult period. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s not too early for all you Leonas and Leos to start making long-distance travel plans. The sooner you stop procrastinating and start deciding where, when and how you’re going, the better. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you’ve known for years might disappoint you, or even make you feel you’ve been betrayed. But check the facts carefully before you make charges that could backfire on you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A holiday plan might need to be revised to accommodate an unexpected complication. Come up with an alternative arrangement as soon as possible to avoid more problems down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t accept halfway explanations for a situation that requires full disclosure. The more you know now, the better able you will be to handle any complications that might arise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The cooperation you relied upon might not be easy to get. Maybe there’s an information gap. See if everyone understands the situation. If not, be sure to offer a full explanation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Problems caused by that recent workplace distraction should soon be easing, allowing you to resume working at a less frantic pace. That personal matter also begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Changing your mind about a job decision isn’t easy for the usually committed Aquarian. But once you check it out, you’ll find facts you didn’t know before. And facts don’t lie. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your unique way of sizing up a situation gives you an edge in resolving that upsetting workplace problem. Stay on your current course regardless of any attempts to distract you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are emotionally attuned to what’s going on around you, and you easily pick up on people’s needs.
HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Medicare Enrollment Season Is Coming: 5 Tips To Make Sure You’re In The Right Plan (NAPS)—Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2019. This is your yearly chance to shop for insurance coverage that best meets your needs. People covered by Medicare will have even more plans with a host of new benefits to choose from for 2020. Here are five things to keep in mind for Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period. 1. Review your 2020 coverage options. Medicare Advantage plan details change each year, so the policy that was the least expensive or best match for you in 2019 may not be right for 2020. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year.
• On Nov. 4, 1979, student followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini send shock waves across America when they storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran. The radical Islamic fundamentalists took 90 hostages. • On Nov. 5, 1968, in one of the closest elections in U.S. history, Republican challenger Richard Nixon defeats Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Because of third-party candidate George Wallace, neither Nixon nor Humphrey received 50% of the vote. • On Nov. 6, 1528, the Spanish conquistador Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is shipwrecked on a low sandy island off the coast of Texas. Starving, dehydrated and desperate, he is the first European to set foot on the soil of the future Lone Star state.
2. Look out for drug coverage changes. It’s common for insurance companies to tweak their list of covered drug and prices. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses. Check to make sure that the medications you need are still covered by your plan in 2020, and pay close attention to any special rules you need to follow to get the most coverage for your medications. Online tools, including eHealthMedicare.com’s prescription drug coverage comparison tool, can help you find the best option for 2020. 3. Make sure your doctors are still covered. The doctors and hospitals that participate in your Medicare plan’s network often change each year as well. Make sure your preferred providers are covered under your current plan or any new plan that interests you. The amount you’ll pay when you get care from a doctor or hospital that does not participate with your plan will be higher than what you’ll pay if you stay within your plan’s network, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. 4. Compare benefits. Along with price comparisons, be sure to review the full range of services and benefits offered by competing Medicare plans. These can include everything from preferred pharmacy and mail-order prescription discounts to dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. And for 2020, many Medicare Advantage plans will offer supplemental benefits that provide additional assistance to people with chronic illness, such as non-emergency transportation, virtual medical visits, caregiver support, nutritional counseling and meal delivery, and air conditioning, among others. 5. Work with a professional to understand your choices. To make sure you’re viewing a wide range of plans available on the market, work with an expert in Medicare products that represents more than just one insurance company. It doesn’t cost anything extra. A licensed agent can help you understand and make sense of all your options and select coverage that best matches your needs, budget, and lifestyle. The expert help of a licensed insurance agent can help you get the best medicare policy for your needs. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I must admit that I’m just a casual fan of baseball, but when the World Series rolls around, I like to tune in. The announcers do such a good job of acquainting you with the players, their stories and the importance of the game. Game one of this year’s series, the Washington Nationals vs. the Houston Astros, was a terrific game eventually won by the Nationals - a bit of an upset in Houston’s home field and against one of the best pitchers in baseball: Gerrit Cole. The best part was how immersed I became in the game, didn’t once look at my smart (life sucking device) phone and thoroughly enjoyed the
4-hour feat. Play ball!
It was a stupid thing to do. My light turned green, and I started making a left. You peeled out of that restaurant like a bat of you know where with no turn signal on. You were lucky I was able to bring the car to a stop halfway out as my classic car is not made with power brakes. It was a stupid, dangerous thing to do. I was tempted to backtrack and tell the police in the grocery store parking lot who were attending to a fender bender.
I had a test taken and the doctor’s office said the results should be in on Friday. I told them I would call on Monday. So, on Monday I called three times and couldn’t get an answer. The doctor’s office can’t keep any help. There is always someone new that has no answers. I wonder why they can’t keep any help. My time is worth something also. They think just because they are doctors, they are above everyone else.
I’m receiving numerous calls for solicitors everyday…at all hours! They need to stop! The only reason I answer the phone is because it may be the hospital calling. I have a sick brother in Hospice. I’m so aggravated by these annoying solicitors!
Please tell the [local] college and high school students who run down [local] route and onto [local] roads to be more careful. They are running, sometimes 4 wide, into the lanes of traffic on very busy roads. Once they are on [local], it is very
hard to see them in the shadows of the tree line on both sides. Yesterday, they were running all the way in my lane of traffic and with oncoming traffic, and there was nowhere to move. They are not wearing highly visible clothing, and you can’t see them until you are right upon them. I’m sure in their mind, the rest of us will automatically just know they are there and to move out of their way, but with other vehicles included in the mix, along with weather conditions, they need to be more cautious.
Thank you, a million times, to the young lady who stopped in the middle of North Street of LeRoy for my puppy that got out of the door and ran into the road. She beeped so he would move, but he is deaf, so he continued to stand there. She was very patient. I am so grateful for caring people like you!

My family and I want to thank the person driving the dark colored pick-up that stopped oncoming traffic in front of the Mt Pleasant Cemetery on 10/23! We were just entering the cemetery with several cars behind us. That is a tricky entrance at best with just one vehicle, let alone a whole line! You honored us, and kept us all safe as well, by this simple act of respect! God bless you! We love the Genesee Valley Penny Saver! Look forward to getting it every week. Recently, we called “The Tree Service” after seeing
Why do some fundraisers in communities include purchasing alcoholic beverages? With so many horrible car accidents, domestic violence and health problems on the rise, which are directly caused by consuming that poison,
Page 19
their ad. I know that lots of folks have vented about their disappointing response from some companies. Well, that’s not our experience. We cannot say enough good things about “The Tree Service!” They kept us informed of weather delays and, when the guys came, they were the nicest, most personable and professional men. Polite, eager to please, and they did great work! We hope they liked the cookies, but more than that, we hope they know just how much they were appreciated and that we recommend them most highly. Thank you!
why isn’t there more of a crackdown on advertising of alcoholic beverages? I don’t contribute to fundraisers that feature alcoholic beverages to those attending. Who will join me in boycotting fundraisers from these places? There are better places that need our financial help that don’t make alcoholic beverages available. So, E-cigs are banned due to 6 deaths.... When do they take our motorcycles?

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2019
QUALITY GENEROSITY COMMUNITY It’s been an exciting year at the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant. Owners Steve Foster and Tim Adams, along with Head Chef William Burch, attended more than 285 events across New York State with their food trucks, over 100 more events than last year, including Washington, D.C. and Hershey, PA. Their food truck also attended the New York State Fair and were enthusiastically invited back next year. With mouth-watering, new offerings like their smoked prime rib Landmark sandwich, created and tested in their own kitchen, the Red Osier Landmark’s big, black trailer has become synonymous with quality. Some confuse the original Red Osier Landmark Restaurant with Red Osier food products. Found at the Lilac Festival, the Corn Hill Arts Festival, the AppleUmpkin Festival, the Rochester Airport, Frontier Field and grocery stores, Red Osier food products are not at all associated with the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford. “If it is not the big, black food truck, it is not us, not our quality, not coming from our doors, not the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant,” declared Foster. Everything served at the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant and its trucks is made fresh every day from breads and rolls to mashed potatoes, desserts, sauces and even the salad. “You can tell the difference,” stated Head Chef William Burch. “We spend days smoking food. It’s all about quality.” Their approach is turning heads, winning an award for Best Food at the Genesee County Fair. November (Lovember) and December usher in the Red Osier Landmark’s roast beef by the pound and prime rib either finished or prepared and ready-to-cook. Drop off service is available for corporate parties, luncheons, Christmas parties and other events. The restaurant will also open on Thanksgiving at noon. “Book now! Availability fills quickly!” advised Adams, suggesting customers also book graduations and weddings for next year.

Foster and Adams also greatly value community involvement, offering two $1,500 BOCES vocational scholarships, one for culinary arts and the other for welding. “To outside communities, we are a dining destination,” shared Foster. “Locally, we are a destination because of what we do.” Adams and Foster received the United Way’s Knight in Shining Armor award for community work they have done this year. In September, the Red Osier Landmark participated in a fundraiser for Mission 22, which addresses Veteran suicide nationally, and Western New York Heroes which meets a broad spectrum of local Veteran needs. During November, the restaurant will team up with the Knights Closet at LeRoy High School and the LeRoy Food Pantry. “Bring in a full brown bag of groceries, for a $10 gift certificate,” said Foster. “In February, bring in a full brown bag of pet food and pet supplies for the Genesee County Animal Shelter to receive the same. It is not just humans we worry about!” Thanksgiving proceeds go to charity, as well. Christmas lights, over 2.5 million last year, will return to the Red Osier Landmark in mid-November, keeping the Stafford Lights tradition alive. “We like to have them on for as long as possible, including Thanksgiving,” said Adams. The restaurant will host its community days, featuring light displays, horse and carriage rides and Santa and Mrs. Claus at no charge on the first two Mondays in December. The restaurant cart will have sandwiches, chili, cookies and more available for purchase.

THE BIBLE SAYS: “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.” (Amos 8:11,12) “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.” ( John 5:24, 45, 46)

It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. ORAL HEALTH TIED TO ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE Whether you are a professional or amateur athlete, regular dental visits may help you perform better and enjoy your sport more. According to the FDI World Dental Federation, not only can oral injury and trauma inhibit athletic performance, but sports-related stress can also lead to dehydration, dry mouth, and teeth-grinding. Additionally, athletes should note that energy beverages and certain foods and supplements contain added sugars and acidic ingredients. These can cause tooth decay and increase the risk of gum disease and tooth erosion. Moreover, the experience of dental emergencies such as a gum abscess, infected tooth, or wisdom tooth eruption prior to a competition, can impair performance or even prevent the athlete from participating at all.
athlete. If you’d rather spend your time on the playing field rather than in the dental chair, keep up with home oral hygiene as well as professional dental visits. For fullservice dental care for all members of your family, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P.S. Because athletes are also at an increased risk for oral and dental trauma and injuries when practicing contact and combat sports, the FDI recommends wearing a custom-made mouth guard.

YOUR FUNGAL CURE!! TOENAILS
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2016. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.
Adult Wary About Tonsillectomy ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor recommends a tonsillectomy based on the fact that I suffer from chronic strep. I am apprehensive about this surgery as an adult. What are the realistic risks of the surgery versus continuing to experience regular cases of strep throat? -- O.C.
ANSWER: Strep throat infections that are chronic (lasting more than three months) or recurrent are indications for tonsillectomy in adults; however, this is an uncommon surgery in adults, and there isn’t a lot of published data on the effectiveness of treatment. Some data shows that tonsillectomy does reduce incidence of infection, as would be expected. Other data shows improved quality of life and fewer missed work days. My own experience is limited to a handful of patients: All have had significant improvement in the number and severity of infections. On the other hand, the surgery itself is unpleasant, and that’s putting it mildly. There is a significant risk of major complications (perhaps around 3%). One patient told me that the first two weeks after surgery were horrendous, but gradually improved over time. As always, it’s a balance between benefits and risks of surgery. But it’s a difficult enough surgery that you are wise to be apprehensive, and I would recommend surgical consultation only if your symptoms were severe enough and significantly impact your life.
ADVANCED PODIATRY ASSOCIATES PLLC Dr. Joseph Canzoneri, DPM PODIATRIC MEDICINE & SURGERY
Batavia • 2 State Street • 343-8150 TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE Bone: Doctors used donated bone tissue to treat patients with various diseases and ailments, include orthopedic cancers, spinal injuries, trauma, and damaged joints.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Three years ago, my mother was prescribed 50,000 IU of vitamin D per week. I read that this dose can lead to serious complications if continued for more than a month or two. How common is it for someone to be on such a high dose for three years? Should my mother insist that her doctor take her off this medication? -- L.H. ANSWER: Fifty thousand units a week is frequently given for eight to 12 weeks in people with significant deficiency in vitamin D, and people often then are switched to a daily dose of 1,000 to 2,000 IU. However, some people prefer a weekly dose, and 10,000 to 20,000 would be the usual dose. Perhaps 10% to 20% of the time, in my experience, people do need higher doses, and 50,000 is not unheard of (some people have a genetic condition requiring high doses). However, this dosing should be guided by blood levels, and I certainly would feel better knowing that your mother has had her level measured if continuing this high dose.
Magic Maze COLORADO
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter gives her 3-year-old daughter fizzy water daily. All her water bottles and sippy cups are filled with some kind of carbonated water. My granddaughter’s appetite seems to have decreased. Could this be caused by the fizzy water? Is it harmful to her stomach? -- L.B. ANSWER: I don’t recommend carbonated water for babies or small children. The dissolved gas in the water can distend the stomach, causing cramps, and that gas has to come out, meaning burps or flatulence. The sense of distention in the stomach might be causing her to eat less as well. Stick to tap or bottled water in reasonable amounts. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Before saying “ so long” to yard w ork at the end of autumn, homeow ners should remove thatch from their law ns. Thatch is dead grass that’s often identifiable by its yellow ish tint, and this dead grass, if left to loom in the law n over the w inter, can block air and moisture from making its w ay into the soil. That can make it difficult for a law n to recover come the spring and may even c ost homeow ners a substantial amount of money to address w hen w inter finally skips tow n. W hen removing thatch, resist the temptation to rake w ith lots of physical force, as raking too hard can harm the law n. Instead, commit to three or four easy passes w ith the rake, as this w ill collect the thatch w ithout damaging the law n. M any people rent a dethatcher from a nearby law n and garden supply store, and suc h a devic e c an make the process of removing thatch much easier. How ever, be sure to clean the machine before using it on your law n, as there is no w ay of telling w hat c ondition the previous renter’s law n w as in w hen heor she used the device. Failing to clean the dethatcher can spread disease from a previous renter’s law n onto your ow n, and that can prove another costly mistake come the spring w hen your law n is looking to rebound. If seeding the law n in early fall, w hich can be a great time to reseed, remove the thatch before laying dow n any new seed. If you w ait to remove thatch until after you have laid dow n new seed, then the law n likely w on’t benefit from the seed and you w ill likely just rake the new seed aw ay w hen it comes time to remove thatch.
Major changes are coming to the NYS bail system this January, including legislation, voted into effect as a budget item, which would allow defendants to return to the scene of their alleged crimes, even private homes, in order to review the scene. Is this acceptable?

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor. TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.

Truck/Trailer Mechanic:
RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
