DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

BENEFITS OF LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS Energy savings: LED lights consume considerably less energy than incandescent lights, saving homeowners money on their energy bills, which can skyrocket in December thanks to interior and exterior holiday lighting displays using incandescent lights. In fact, the OEERE estimates that, by 2027, widespread use of LED lights could save consumers more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices.

HOLIDAY FUN FACTS “Jingle Bells” originally was a Thanksgiving song, and it was first performed by composer/organist James Lord Pierpont at his church’s Thanksgiving concert.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Thanksgiving Tip: “Let one person be responsible for putting prep dishes, pots and pans in the dishwasher while another prepares the bird and side dishes for the table. You will be halfway done with dishes by the time the meal is over.” -- M.A. in Washington * “Bake stuffing in muffin tins for individual servings. Also, if your family is anything like mine, we love the crispy parts, and everyone will get some this way!” -- W.G. in Mississippi * “If you host a large family holiday gathering and serve a lot of side dishes, try this trick to them hot while waiting for other items to finish in the oven. Simply cover the bottom of a clean ice chest with a few trivets or a couple kitchen towels, and set casseroles and oven-cooked meats inside. Most people use a cooler to keep things cold, but the insulation works just as well to keep hot things hot ... at least for a little while.” -- M.E. in West Virginia * “An oldie but a goodie, and certainly considerate of dear old Mom: In my family, you come to Thanksgiving dinner with your own plastic containers for leftovers. If you don’t bring your own, you don’t go home with tomorrow’s lunch. Mom instituted this rule after the first Thanksgiving when all the kids had moved out. We practically cleaned her out of Tupperware!” -- E.Y. in New Mexico

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Shopping local is more important than ever this year! Unique, local goods await in deliberately uncrowded shops, which give you the space and time you need to browse. Shoppers can also choose the convenience of curbside pick-up for their community-friendly purchases, often with a “touchless” option. So, move over, Amazon! Local business owners, our friends and neighbors, are once again open and more convenient than ever.
community, compared to the zero to $0.01 returned with an online retailer.
Need a little more convincing? Check out these stats!
• Finally, local businesses are much more likely to be customers of local service providers, including accountants, wholesalers, farmers, lawyers, contractors, grocers, printers, plumbers, welders, electricians, and more!
• Each dollar you spend purchasing from a local, independent business returns at least $0.65 to your local
• Online big-box retailers sometimes force local companies out of business. In return, with fewer businesses to offset community costs, local tax burdens fall increasingly on community residents. • Displaced corporate businesses donate less than half as much per sales dollar to local non-profits, events and teams compared to small businesses.
Get in on the Cyber Monday action and keep your dollars local when you visit us at GVPennySaver.com! Local businesses have just the gifts, services, and goods you are looking for this holiday season! Adults tend to be more difficult to shop for than children, as many adults can simply buy their own gadgets, clothing and other items commonly given during the holiday season. To save money, adults can forgo gifting traditional gifts to one another, instead resolving to provide an experience for a loved one. Invite a loved one over for a homecooked meal or offer to take a family member out to dinner once the holiday season has come and gone and there’s more room in the budget.

SCORE GREAT DEALS THIS SEASON Make purchases with a cash-back credit card. Consumers who trust themselves to pay their credit card balances in full each month can use cash-back cards to enhance their savings. Such cards reward consumers with cash back that’s equal to a percentage of each purchase made with their cards. For example, a 2 percent cash-back card will return $2 to consumers for every $100 they spend using their cash-back card. While using these cards won’t do much to combat crowds, shoppers might be happy to wait on line knowing that their deals will prove even more rewarding than advertised.
We also have Hats & Scarves! Due to Covid-19, strict safety policies are in effect and apply to EVERYONE. Everything in my shop is covered in plastic including my styling chair. I also wear protective clothing. There is no way an operator could be three feet apart from a client while working, that’s why the client and I are covered. You will receive foot coverings, vinyl gloves, and a sheer vinyl cape which you will wear out to your car and discard at your convenience. Temperature will be taken at the door. No wigs are touched by bare hands.

GIFT IDEAS FOR LAST-MINUTE SHOPPERS Early bird shoppers may purchase and even wrap gifts before December, but eleventh-hour shoppers may need some help come the holiday season. For those last-minute folks, there still are plenty of ways to ensure your shopping list is checked off. The following gifts are quick to purchase and can still make for thoughtful presents. • Liquor or wine basket: Prepackaged spirits often come with decorative glasses and other accoutrements for entertaining. What’s more, they’re convenient to purchase if you’re on a time crunch. • Fueling station gift card: Drivers will appreciate a gift card to their favorite fueling station. Such cards suit anyone who has a car and frequently travels or commutes. • Food basket: A visit to the supermarket or a convenience center can yield many tasty finds that can be packaged together into a gift basket. Pair foods with a gift card to that retailer. • Streaming service: Offer to treat a loved one to a month or two of their favorite streaming television or movie service. If they already have streaming subscriptions, offer to cover the cost of the subscription for a few months. • Premade gifts: Don’t overlook your local pharmacy as a place to find convenient gifts. Look for unique items in the seasonal aisle, where you might be able to find stockingstuffer toiletries or cosmetic gifts that suit several people on your shopping list.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Foreign Radio Stations and Language Lessons Here we are, still stuck mostly at home for another winter. Looking for ways to get out, even if it’s only mentally, I’ve discovered internet radio. It’s easy to get started. I went to Radio.net (with 33,000 stations around the world) and on a whim I typed in Ireland for a search function. That got me 15 stations in Ireland. I tried Canada, and that netted me 44 stations. Searching for France, I found 798 stations. I went with a French talk show aimed at seniors and have been able to test the free French lessons I’ve been taking online with Duolingo. If you get hooked on listening to the radio on your computer, you might consider investing in a good pair of speakers. I prefer the wired speakers, as opposed to struggling with Bluetooth connections, and a decent set can be had for less than $25. I’m still using a pair of 3-inch cube speakers with a very handy volume button that I purchased seven years ago. As for the free French lessons on Duolingo (duolingo.com), I’ve decided to start again at the beginning. There are four goal levels: casual, regular, serious and intense, meaning 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes per day of instruction. Now that I’ve found that French talk show, not to mention all the other 797 French stations, I’m going to get more serious about learning French. On Radio.net there was an offer to get a free phone app at the App store or on Google Play, but you can just click the green arrow for connection. One thing to keep in mind about radio apps for phones or tablets -- they do use data. If you’re on a cellphone plan, make sure you are using Wi-Fi, or be aware of how much data you are using. You can always listen on the computer. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

CURE!! Your fungal toenails before SUMMER 2022
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
The Problem With Playing Pharmacist ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Doctors tried an electrical cardioversion, but it came back after a few days. She is taking metoprolol and Eliquis. We have read about the supplements red clover, turmeric, omega-3 and hawthorn. Should she discontinue the pharmaceuticals and take supplements instead? -- J.C. ANSWER: Please don’t do that, and let me explain why. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm. The goal of treating it is first to relieve symptoms, such as fast heart rate and dizziness, and second, to reduce the risk of stroke. Blood clots can form inside the heart when the atria are fibrillating (a chaotic, non-coordinated muscle movement). Those clots can break off and go into the blood vessels of the brain, causing cell death and loss of function in that part of the brain. That’s a stroke. Your wife is taking metoprolol to slow the heart rate. Atrial fibrillation causes the ventricles to go too fast, causing a sensation of fast heart rate and palpitations. Metoprolol, a beta blocker, protects the heart from damage from a too-fast heart rate, in addition to relieving symptoms. Apixaban (Eliquis) is a powerful anticoagulant, reducing the risk of clot formation. Red clover is usually used in herbal medicine for its estrogen-like activities. Unfortunately, estrogens INCREASE clot risk, so this herbal medicine absolutely should not be used by someone at risk for clots. Sweet clover hay is the source of warfarin (Coumadin), another often-used anticoagulant in people with atrial fibrillation: This may be the source of confusion. However, warfarin needs to be dosed precisely, with frequent blood-level checks. Turmeric is an antioxidant that does have some mild anticoagulant properties. However, it is not remotely powerful enough to do the job of protecting your wife adequately from stroke. Omega-3 fish oils were once thought to reduce risk of atrial fibrillation; unfortunately, a 2013 study showed no benefit. Hawthorn has two potential benefits: To a slight extent, it acts as a beta blocker (like metoprolol) as well as an anticoagulant. However, no trials have proven its effectiveness. It may interfere with both her medicines. The metoprolol and Eliquis have much more safety data. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved
• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? • Now’s the time to get treatment. If left untreated, fungal toenails can: affect your immune system, cause recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance! • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation and numbness to their feet can develop more serious problems. • There are also safer new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one-a-day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2022. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

ORAL HYGIENE HABITS TO IMPROVE OVERALL HEALTH Practicing good oral hygiene is essential to keep teeth and gums healthy. Good home-care habits such as brushing and flossing twice a day and avoiding smoking and sugary drinks, as well as regular dental checkups and getting fluoride treatments will help sustain the overall health and structure of strong, natural teeth. However, oral health is about more than cavities and gum disease. Research shows there is an association between the health of a person’s mouth and overall health. Without timely treatment, tooth decay or gum problems lead to pain, selfconfidence issues, and tooth loss. These issues can then lead to malnutrition, speech problems, and other challenges socially and in work and school.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER As the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

RESILIENCE: A TIMELY THANKSGIVING TRADITION BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he days have grown shorter. Browning leaves of red, orange, and an gold rustle as they are bl blown by breezes that bite, and an the palest of frosts appear ap overnight only to melt away at sunrise. me Throughout the country, families are preparing to fa gather over tables full of turkey, squash and stuffing, carrots and cranberry jelly, mashed potatoes and marshmallowed yams, plump biscuits, and pumpkin pies. Thanksgiving Day has arrived, wafting in on mouthwatering [turkey] wings. Amid an ongoing pandemic, it is time to find gratitude once again. This Thanksgiving, after “two weeks to flatten the curve” became nearly two years of riding the rollercoaster, there is a strain which can be felt. Almost two years of pandemic pressures, economic challenges, political conflicts, and semi-isolation have left their mark. Pandemic realities continue to shape our everyday lives; whether long-term or short-term remains to be seen. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, perhaps it is time to expand our focus from simple survival to include how we will survive. Thanksgiving Day itself is a holiday born and baptized in adversity. Its inception took place among those Pilgrims who survived their first year upon New England shores: only 51 of the Mayflower’s 102 passengers and about half the crew. It was proclaimed and celebrated on the heels of the American Revolution, when President George Washington declared Thursday, November 26th, 1789, to be “a Day of Publick Thanksgivin.” It rang out over the fierce battles of the American Civil War in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln issued a declaration asking that all citizens observe “a day for National thanksgiving, praise, and prayer.” Finally, in 1941 as World War II raged on, Thanksgiving Day was established by the Congress of the United States as a national holiday to take place each year on the fourth Thursday of November.
During the Spanish Flu pandemic, New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Royal S. Copeland was faced with many difficult—and at times controversial—decisions while working in the interests of public health. In one of his letters, he wrote, “When the history of the influenza in America is written, you will not be ashamed of the care afforded to this metropolis.” Dr. Copeland’s ability to imagine a point after the pandemic in which the pandemic itself was in the past is both striking and key. Dr. Copeland understood that the Spanish Flu pandemic would become a chapter in American history…and it has. One day, whether one month, one year, or five years into the future, the Covid-19 pandemic will be a chapter in American history. Will we be able to look back and say that we are not ashamed of how we cared for each other, of how we treated others in restaurants and grocery stores, on “It is time to social media and within our families? The fact that this pandemic, which now expand our focus touches every aspect of our lives, will from simple ultimately be a part of our nation’s past survival to include can put so much into perspective.
how we will survive.”
Meanwhile, how can one “vaccinate” the spirit against current stresses? Gratitude. Giving thanks for the many blessings we still enjoy redirects our focus from the negative to the positive. A gratitude lifestyle has been found to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and blood cortisol levels, increase feelings of well-being, and strengthen one’s ability to cope with challenging situations. This Thanksgiving season, consider taking some extra time to reflect on those blessings which mean the most to you. As you gather with family and friends, whether in person or virtually, share these blessings with each other and experience resilience through gratitude. After all, it’s a Thanksgiving tradition.
A common thread even more meaningful in the light of our present pandemic is the human resilience at each of these points in time as well as the decision to give thanks. Merriam-Webster has defined “resilience” as “the ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after something bad happens.” If that doesn’t sound like a post-pandemic prescription, I don’t know what does! Merriam-Webster also defines “resilience” as “the ability of something to return to its original shape after it has been pulled, stretched, pressed, bent, etc.” For many, the last two years have left us feeling all of the above! Yet, it is this elasticity we so desperately need right now. It is one’s ability to endure extraordinary difficulties and challenges and yet remain the same sort of person they were before. Surviving this pandemic has been our necessary focus for so long; however, what can we do to ensure the “us” that survives is who we want to be?

S E V RA Farmers Farmers are dealing with muddy conditions this year. That may mean more grain wagons and trucks being loaded on the road. Farmers try hard to work quickly and keep traffic moving but please, be patient and safe around farm equipment! Thank a farmer today. Good news! In response to “Where are we headed” here is some good news. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.6% and 531,000 jobs were added in October! The infrastructure bill passed by both Democrats and Republicans last week will be adding millions of new jobs, and we will all benefit from repaired roads and bridges, lead free water lines, increased broadband and improved train travel. All those new jobs are certainly good news! I’m not sure where you shop, but I’ve found everything I need at all the main grocery stores in our area, both national chains and local grocers. If you’re finding bare shelves, perhaps you should try a different store or try purchasing online. There is little anyone can do about gas prices which fluctuate up and down based on the price of crude oil which is controlled by the global market. We all received help from our federal government during the COVID-19 shutdown, and we are still receiving it. I see much to celebrate! Also, it’s 61 degrees with sunshine in mid-November! Smile! Kindness I would like to thank the lady who left money for my groceries at the Batavia Aldi on November 8th. Bless you for your kindness.
Our government; our republic A recent 60 Minutes interview with an Andrew Sullivan spotlighted a terrible trend that is so prevalent in our politics today. Absolutely no dialogue, no discussion, no discourse, just “You’re wrong because you don’t think like me (or worse, my party).” Republican leader Mitch McConnell vowed that everything the Democrats do, his party would be against. Wow! That is not what our democracy or this country was built on. We had one of the greatest nations on earth because of our republic and the open exchange of ideas and ideologies, but we should all be extremely concerned as to where our United States of America is heading. Our politicians could use a vaccine that would cure their cruel and bitter criticism! Tipping your server To the table of six that went out to eat last Wednesday after a day of fishing at [local spot]: Nice of you to eat, drink and have excellent service and leave nothing for a tip. Servers do not make minimum wage and depend on their tips. Times are tough, and often establishments can’t find enough help, so the servers are working their tails off to give their customers a good dining experience. Please remember that when you are going out to eat. If you can’t afford to leave a tip, then eat at home! Holding the country hostage To “What An Idiot:” Actually, it’s not Joe Manchin holding our country hostage. It’s those who want to bankrupt the USA who are holding us hostage. If you’re so worried about the children, let’s not leave generations to pay for this legislation which is full of “pork.” As I recall, Joe Biden took naps during the all-important COP26 meeting. As for which Joe should be impeached, look no further than the top dog.
What a blessing! Thank to the gentleman who paid for my oil change at the Monroe Muffler in Geneseo. I don't know your name, but your act of generosity brightened a tough day. I will be sure to pay it forward when I can!

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Many homeowners prefer mulch made of wood chips, which is both effective and readily available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that organic mulches, which include leaves, wood chips, compost or grass clippings, can be used by homeowners who want to develop eco-friendly landscapes.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
New Dog Has Appetite for Doggie Door Flap
GCC is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to fostering diversity in its faculty, staff, and student body, and strongly encourages applications from the entire spectrum of a diverse community.
DEAR PAWS CORNER: Help! Our recently adopted dog “Mollie,” a medium-sized mixed breed, thinks the doggie door flap leading outside to the backyard is delicious. Rather than using it to go in and out, she grabs the edge, chews and tugs on it. She growls when she does this. And she insists that we open the back door for her to go out. How do we fix this? -- Mary T., San Antonio DEAR MARY: You’ll need to address this in two steps. First, you need to figure out if Mollie is chewing due to boredom or attention-seeking, or if she has separation anxiety due to trauma in her past. If she’s only chewing on the door flap and nothing else in the house, maybe there’s an old memory surfacing. Second, you’ll need to repair or replace the damaged flap and train Mollie to go in and out of it confidently. Here are a few methods: 1. Divert and distract: As soon as Mollie starts trying to chew the door, call her name to stop her and then distract her away from the door with something else that interests her, like a favorite toy or a treat. 2. Behavior training at the same time each day: Note when Mollie is most likely to start chewing on the door. Then, conduct 10 minutes of behavior training in basic commands. 3. Train Mollie to use the flap correctly: Once she’s responding well to basic commands, add “going thru the flap” to her training. The AKC has a great tutorial here: www. akc.org/expert-advice/training/ dog-not-using-dog-door/ and this trainer’s video shows the clicker-treat method: www.youtube. com/watch?v=-R_k4_UHDeA If these methods don’t work, consider a professional trainer to help identify and work through Mollie’s fears or bad habits.
