Buying Gold & Silver Old Coins & Scrap Byron-Bergen STEAM students in front of their printed pumpkins display case
Byron-Bergen STEAM Students “Carve” Pumpkins By Gretchen Spittler Craig Schroth’s fifth and sixth grade STEAM Lab classes are carving pumpkins. But, there are no pumpkins in the room. Students sit at their computers and each build and carve their own virtual pumpkin in a three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) program. When they are complete, Schroth will print them on a 3-D printer. “It takes a long time, but it’s cool,” said one student. “Cool” is the word most students use to describe the project. The pumpkins start to take shape. Students “group” repeated elliptical spheres to create scalloped edges, then add a cylindrical stem. On each screen, orange shapes come together to form what is, unmistakably, a pumpkin. To hollow out the pumpkin, students place It takes a a sphere in the middle. It long time, does not affect the surface but it’s cool! design but “it makes print- a Byron-Bergen Student ing more efficient,” Schroth explains. “I have two printers and many students, and I want to fill the display case with as many projects as possible.” The students have been following instructions up to this point, but now they get creative. Students add jack-o-lantern faces using various shapes and designs. Eyes appear as stars and hearts. One pumpkin has sunglasses and a mustache. When compared with traditional pumpkin carving, one student argues that she doesn’t like getting pumpkin guts on her hands. Another argues that virtual pumpkins have no seeds, a favorite snack of hers. When asked if he would like to continue working in 3-D design in high school, another student simply blurts, “Yes!” Blue printed pumpkin sports sunglasses and a mustache!

Printed Jack-o’-Lanterns
“This project has been a great way for students to explore the use of computer-aided design programs in 3-D modeling and prototyping,” said Schroth. “Students are applying skills that they have learned in math class through angles, measurement, and geometry to design a model they can actually hold on to with 3-D printing.” In the front hallway of the Elementary School, a large display case holds a tractor and wagon, both built by third grade students. The tractor is driven by the STEAM Lab robot mascot, named Byron, and the tractor displays rows of 3-D printed jack-o-lanterns. Picked fresh daily – well, printed fresh daily. Enjoy this article? D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

(NAPS)—People with low vision have blind spots that can make it difficult or impossible to drive, read or see faces. These impairments cannot be corrected by surgery or glasses. What’s more, too many are blind to the realization that much can be done to improve their quality of life. What Can Be Done In fact, low vision rehabilitation services help people make the most of the vision they have. The first step is to get an eye exam by an ophthalmologist, a physician who specializes in medical and surgical eye care. Who Can Help An ophthalmologist can determine the full extent of vision loss and exact location of blind spots. Either the ophthalmologist or a low vision specialist can then determine the best techniques and devices that can help you get around your individual challenges. Where EyeCare America Comes In If you’re concerned about the cost of the exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. This national public service program provides eye care through volunteer ophthalmologists for eligible seniors 65 and older; and those at increased risk for eye disease. As one EyeCare America patient said, “I’m a senior living on a low income. It had been 30 years since I’d had an eye exam. It was a true blessing to receive this service.” Low Vision Services Offer Hope The field of vision rehabilitation has advanced significantly over the years, offering more effective technologies and strategies. Today, ophthalmologists’ solutions range from simple, portable video magnifiers to enlarge text and objects to high-tech glasses with cameras that let people read text and see faces. In addition, there are many simple changes people can make on their own to help them live better: • Improve contrast. Contrasting colors can make it easier to accomplish household tasks and improve safety. Put dark place mats under white place settings, get area rugs that are a contrasting color with the floor and kitchen towels and cutting boards that contrast with the counter top. Use contrasting colored tape along the edges of rugs, stair steps and lamp shades. • Improve lighting. Every year, about three million older Americans are treated for injuries from falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these falls are caused by low vision. Add lighting to staircases and dark hallways. Remove rugs from hallways to prevent tripping. Task lighting in the kitchen can make food preparation safer and easier. • Reduce clutter and organize. A cluttered house is more difficult to navigate and can contribute to falls and frustration. When each item has a specific place and is identified with a high-contrast label, it’s easier to locate items needed for everyday living. • Embrace technology. Books on tape and personal voice-activated assistants, such as Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa, can be enormously helpful for people who can no longer see well enough to read, dial a phone or set a thermostat. With a simple voice command, these can phone dial a friend for you while the thermostat dials up the heat. While there isn’t one strategy or tool that works for every person, vision rehabilitation offers hope for many and can help people stay in their homes and continue doing the things they love. Learn More For further facts and tips, visit www.eyecareamerica.org. To see if you or someone you care for is eligible for the EyeCare America program, visit www.aao.org/eyecareamerica.

HOMETOWN
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
1.
* On Dec. 7, 1805, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, having made a difficult trip across the rugged Rockies, set up winter camp near the mouth of the Columbia River. They named it Fort Clatsop, after the local Indian tribe. * On Dec. 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, officially ending the institution of slavery, is ratified when Georgia votes to ratify. Mississippi, however, would not submit documentation to abolish slavery until 2013. * On Dec. 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers take off from Florida on a routine three-hour training mission near the Bahamas. Two hours later, the planes disappeared. Mariner aircraft, sent to locate the planes, also disappeared. No trace of the men or aircraft were ever found.

HOW TO ORGANIZE OFFICE GIFT EXCHANGES Close-knit groups of employees commonly exchange gifts with one another come the holiday season. Friendly coworkers enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of their friends and fellow employees, and these informal gift exchanges can benefit company morale and establish a familial atmosphere at the office. In spite of the good-natured reasons to exchange gifts with coworkers, some people are nervous about the prospect of gifting fellow employees. Questions regarding what makes for an appropriate gift or how much to spend may arise, turning office gift exchanges into potentially puzzling situations.

The holiday season is a special time of year to give thanks and spend time with loved ones. While the holidays are an inherently happy time, that joyful mood can be marred by the crooks who like to take advantage of people’s generosity, as well as their propensity to pay less attention to their surroundings as they do during less hectic times of year. Instances of certain crimes, particularly theft and identity theft, increase around the holiday season. Allstate Insurance advises that break-ins in residential areas may increase during the holiday season as well. That’s because thieves know that many homes are empty or cars are full of highpriced presents. Put the focus back on good cheer, delicious food, celebrations and gifting - protect yourself and your property this holiday season.

585-343-1780 WWW.CASTILONE.NET BE SMART WHEN SHOPPING ON YOUR SMARTPHONE Holiday shopping is an annual tradition for many people. But while it may be customary to exchange gifts with loved ones during the holiday season, how those gifts are purchased has changed dramatically over the last decade and a half. Thanks to advancements in technology, many holiday shoppers get their shopping done without ever setting foot in malls or shopping centers. And data indicates more and more shoppers are using their smartphones to do their holiday shopping. According to Nielsen Mobile Measurement, the number of mobile shoppers in December 2014 rose to 138.1 million users, an increase of nearly 14 million users from the same period just a year earlier. And mobile shoppers averaged nearly a full hour more shopping on the Web from their mobile phones in 2014 than in 2013. Convenience often drives shoppers’ decisions to use their mobile phones during the holiday season. But it’s important that shoppers not sacrifice security for the sake of convenience.

MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL As they fulfill the social obligations of the holiday season, many people find themselves spending less time at home. Consumer Reports notes that individuals spend a great deal of time shopping for gifts come the holiday season. Americans engage in 15 hours of shopping on average, with women spending twice as long as their male counterparts (20 hours versus 10). In addition, the average person devotes 10 or more hours to wrapping and returning gifts. Holiday shopping can monopolize people’s time away from home during the months of November and December, and some shoppers wonder how they become so disconnected from other activities, including family time, that they cherish throughout the rest of the year. One way to tackle holiday shopping without sacrificing time with family and friends is to make holiday shopping a social event.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
PREMATURE CONCLUSIONS If a baby tooth were to be lost prematurely, a parent may find little sense in becoming too concerned, “because it was going to fall out anyway.” However, the fault with this line of thinking rests with the possibility that adjacent baby teeth may move in to fill the gap left by the lost baby tooth, thereby blocking the emergence of the permanent tooth lying beneath it. Conversely, a baby tooth that takes too long to fall out may cause the corresponding permanent tooth to come in crooked. With these potential outcomes in mind, parents should have their children’s baby teeth checked regularly to ensure that they will not negatively affect the alignment of future permanent teeth. The importance of baby teeth
cannot be understated, just as conscientious dental care should not be overlooked. Let BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL help promote your childrenís healthy mouth and brilliant smile. Taught early enough about the importance of taking care of their teeth, children can learn to make a habit of daily brushing and flossing. We have convenient office hours at 6 Batavia City Centre; please call 585.343.4246. P.S. If a baby tooth is lost too early, aside from causing serious crowding problems for the developing adult teeth, the loss can negatively impact the child’s jaw muscle and bone development.

Does A-Fib Diagnosis Mean No More Steak? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation a year ago. A week after that, I had an MRI that showed I’d had a ministroke and probably several others in the past. I love ribeye steak, and eat it maybe two or three times a year. Is this safe? -- R.A. ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation is a rhythm problem of the heart. The natural rhythm is lost, so the heartbeat becomes irregular. Because of the lack of normal movement in the heart, the blood can pool and form clots in the left atrium; these clots can travel downstream to lodge in a blood vessel. Clots can cut off the blood supply to the area where they lodge. It’s most critical when it happens in the brain, since if brain cells die, function is lost. A stroke is just a focal area of cell death in the brain. The size and location of the area in the brain where cell death occurs determines how significant the stroke is. Strokes can range from unnoticeable to devastating to fatal. Most people with atrial fibrillation take medication to reduce the risk of stroke. Eating poorly can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, but most commonly this happens via a different mechanism. High amounts of saturated fat -- such as in ribeye steak, which is fattier than many cuts of beef -- increase the risk of damage to blood vessels through buildup of cholesterol plaques. These plaques cut off blood supply, and this causes a heart attack if the plaques are lodged in the arteries of the heart, a stroke if in the brain, and various problems if in other parts of the body. In people who have a history of stroke, it’s particularly important to take steps to reduce further risk. That means a discussion with your doctor about whether you are on the best treatment for atrial fibrillation and whether you have evidence of cholesterol plaques. Even if you don’t have any evidence of plaques, a healthy diet of mostly plants, with whole grains, nuts and seeds, some fatty fish (if you enjoy that) and sparse amounts of meats reduces many health risks. However, two or three steaks a year is not going to cause harm. The best data available shows that people who have 100 grams (just over 3 ounces) of red meat a week are at the lowest risk of developing blood vessel problems. It’s not clear that zero is better than that small amount. In any event, I am a firm believer that enjoying life is the goal. If having a steak a few times a year is truly enjoyable, the risk is small, and you should enjoy those meals without guilt. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the body’s rate of absorption for calcium? -- A. ANSWER: The textbook answer is 20% to 40%, but in reality, the answer is very complicated, as it depends on total body and intracellular calcium, vitamin D levels, presence of phosphates in food and other factors. The short answer is that it’s usually exactly what it needs to be when things work properly. If the body is deficient in calcium, then absorption is maximal, but still most calcium in food is not absorbed. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2019 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

People don’t like to let others in front of them because they feel they should wait their turn patiently. Lately, I have been letting sometimes two people behind me, people with separate carts or with one or two items in their hands go first. It doesn’t hurt to be kind to someone. I have had
two items or one item, and someone in front of me with $120 worth of groceries, and they didn’t dream of letting me go in front of them. I had a gift card and wasn’t sure how to do it in self-checkout, so went through the regular line. I have decided to do unto others as I would have them do unto me. Remember the Golden Rule. Even if people don’t let me ahead of them, I continue to do so, knowing I did the right thing, and it is more commendable to do a kindness and something for someone that did not do the same.

In response to the person upset about mowing the roadsides and disturbing bee and butterfly habitats: mowing is an absolute necessity! I have two words for you: giant Russian hogweed. It is a horribly invasive plant. The sap will leave burns on your skin and your dogs’ noses, too. When the roadside brush dries up, one cigarette tossed out of a vehicle can cause a fire. If you want to encourage bees and butterflies, there are many plants you can grow in your own yard to encourage This is directed to the their visits. To the Dad, I assume, with his wife and 5-year-old child, who wore a shirt using the “F” word on it at a buffet, good job. You should be nominated as “Parents of the Year”. What a great example for the child? You’re not “cool” or “bad.” Just plain classless! You should’ve been tossed out of the restaurant. You both must have been raised by “great” parents, too.

911 as the car was probably extremely hot inside. After another 10 minutes and still no cop, the owner came out. I exchanged words with her, and much to my dismay, she said she was only in the store for two minutes. These people who leave their pets or children in hot vehicles don’t deserve either! People who do this, in my opinion, are the epitome of ignorance and selfishness. I was only sorry that the cop never showed up during this time so this woman could have been charged with animal cruelty and perhaps even had her sweet little puppy taken from her!
There is a reason brush and tall grass is cut short on sides of the roads. The small critters that are frolicking in the tall grasses have no idea a road is only inches away. And then slam, they’re roadkill. If the grasses are short, they can

In relation to a rant in the Oct. 18th edition: I understand that there’s a certain stigma surrounding hemp products, but I believe your children are in no danger from CBD products. In fact, I encourage you to teach them and yourselves about the many benefits! Endocannabinoids are naturally found in breast milk. KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS
STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS
Place the tree away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.
Employ the buddy system. When stringing lights, always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be an unexpected change in plans for your upcoming holiday travels. But keep in mind that a little flexibility goes a long way in resolving any disappointments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new relationship might not be responding quite as quickly as you’d hoped. Could you be expecting too much too soon? Try to ease up and let things happen at their own pace. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As we approach the frenetic pace of pre-holiday planning, take time out now to reconnect with the wonderful people who share your life, especially the one who also shares your dreams. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A misunderstanding should be resolved before you get caught up in the flurry of holiday preparations. Set your pride aside and deal with it, regardless of who might have hurt whom first. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being told that a colleague might have been trying to undercut your effectiveness might or might not be true. Get all the facts before you even think about acting on this so-called information. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good idea to start your holiday preparation plans early in order to avoid a time crunch if an unresolved workplace situation causes a problem. That old friend might have some welcome news. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s actions continue to surprise you, but this time with positive results. Could be your wise counsel finally got through. It’s like having an early holiday gift, isn’t it? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your reluctance to act in a current situation could be traced to your inner self advising you to take more time to study its complexities before you attempt to deal with it. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Soothing hurt feelings before they can ignite an angry outburst is the wise thing to do. And, of course, when it comes to doing the “wisdom thing,” you do it so well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Budget your time so that you can handle both your workplace duties and your personal holiday planning -- including travel arrangements -- without burning out on either end. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might find that you still need to firm up one or two of those still-outstanding decisions so that you finally can move forward as you had planned. Weigh the facts, then act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You usually don’t carry grudges, but you might feel this is one time when you’re justified in doing so. But aren’t you spending too much energy holding onto it? Let it go and move on. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of using your quiet strength to persuade people to follow their better instincts and do the right thing. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long. Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas tree owners can take steps to prolong the life of their trees.
The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other. ~Burton Hillis

When you shop small, the bulk of the money you spend and most of your taxes stay local — helping schools, paving streets, keeping you safe. According to the research firm Civic Economics, for every $100 you spend: in a local small business, $68 stays in your community; at a local branch of a chain store, $43 remains; online, virtually no money stays local.

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.
