PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Helping a “Found” Cat Get Home DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My friend found an orange cat matching the description on a paper flyer posted on a nearby telephone pole. However, the email address listed on the flyer keeps coming back as “invalid,” so she has no way to contact the owner. What else can she do to return the cat to its rightful owner? -- Jimmy V., via email
DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

DEAR JIMMY: Kudos to you and your friend for caring for the lost cat and trying to get it back to the owner! The first thing to do is to contact nearby shelters and veterinarian’s offices and tell them that you’ve found a lost cat but cannot contact the owner. They may have you bring in the cat to scan for a microchip -- the best way to identify pets and reunite them with their owners when a collar and tag are lost. Or they may ask for a description and have you email a photo of the cat so they can put up a “found” flyer in their lobby. Chances are, if the owner has already put up flyers, they have probably been checking with shelters regularly to see if their cat has been reported found or has turned up there. Next, get the word out. Paws.org has a downloadable PDF flyer (www.paws.org/resources/reunitea-found-pet/) that you can use to post your own found sign and add a contact email or number for the owner to call. Post a found notice on Facebook groups like Lost and Pound (www.facebook.com/lostandpound), which focus on lost pets.

POLL Elon Musk recently completed his purchase of Twitter and promised big changes in favor of free speech. Some think fewer rules will encourage more use of the platform. Others are fearful Twitter will become a “wild west” for content due to less moderation. Will you consider using Twitter with Musk at the helm? • Yes, I think he will help make the platform more open and free. • No, I don’t think the changes are good. • I’ve never used Twitter and probably still won’t. DID YOU KNOW?
Veterans Day
There are various types of liver cancer. According to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, each type differs in the way it develops. · Hepatocellular carcinoma: This is the most common type of primary liver cancer. It begins in liver cells called hepatocytes. · Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: This cancer begins in tubelike structures called bile ducts and is the second most common type of liver cancer. · Fibrolamellar-hepatocellular carcinoma: This is a rare type of hepatocellular carcinoma that is less aggressive than other types of primary liver cancer. It usually develops in people in their 20s and 30s. · Angiosarcomas, hemangiosarcomas and hemangioendotheliomas: These tumors occur in the inner linings of the blood vessels. It is most often diagnosed in very young children and is treatable. · Hematoblastomas: These primary liver tumors are made of tissue that resembles fetal liver cells, bile duct cells or mature liver cells under a microscope. They are treatable. · Benign tumors: Some tumors are noncancerous and do not cause symptoms or discomfort. Adenomas, liver cysts, hemangiomas, and focal nodular hyperplasias are some examples of benign tumors.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHEN YOU’RE AWAY Create the impression that someone is home. Just because you’re heading off for parts unknown doesn’t mean you can’t create the impression that life is carrying on as usual within the walls of your home. Smart home technology now enables homeowners to set timers on lights and even home electronics like televisions and radios. Homeowners also can ask neighbors to pick up their mail or halt delivery until they return from their trips. Nothing says “no one’s home” as definitively as an overflowing mailbox.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING Invest in quality gear - In addition to the tent, campers will need a tarp/ground cover to place under the tent. This helps prevent moisture seepage from the soil. Next, determine how everyone will sleep, whether on the ground or in cots. Cots can be the most comfortable options, but they take up a lot of space and can be heavy to transport - which is less than ideal when backpacking to a campsite. Inflatable mattresses or sleeping pads can be used in conjunction with sleeping bags to provide a soft, cushioned surface. Some are affordable at $40 while others may cost as much as $300. Costlier options may be best for frequent campers.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.
Hi, I am Claude Hopper. At the end of July I went to my current home as a foster through Headed For Furever. When my human Papa met me, that was it. I was not going anywhere. SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice.
Fill it with spirits No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers. Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

Nov. 8th Let’s Drain The Swamp! On Election Day vote for

A new voice is needed in the new 24th District of NY. His concerns range from female freedom of choice to our cost of living. A veteran, he is a retired Lt. Col. who was deployed 4 times. Look for Steven Holden on Row A on the ballet, Tuesday, November 8th. This ad was paid for by Dick Platt, Geneseo, NY.
S E V RA Thank You I just want to thank the sweet little girl who presented me with a delicious box of cookies and beautiful card in the Wegman’s parking lot on Rte 31. That was such a surprise and genuine act of love. It was such a perfect gift as our car wouldn’t start and I was experiencing a bit of nausea from the chemo I have been receiving. Not only did she give me the lovely box of cookies, but she and her mother found someone who could help us get our car started. I hope they read this because it meant so very much to me. I was kind of in shock at the time and didn’t get to express how much it meant. I just went home and cried! There are many good people in this world and that sweet little girl and her mom are a shining example of God’s love. Thank you for renewing my faith. I will definitely pass on the love you gave me. Trunk or treat at the Elks A shout out to the Elks Lodge #24! In this day and age when we adults have to teach our children to be wary of others, you showed up big time! You did an awesome job for the kids on Saturday, Oct.22. Each car, with their thought out decorations and friendly greetings from the adults, made my grandchildren feel so welcome! You were so in the spirit of what Halloween is about; the children! Thank you! What have I missed I grew up many years ago, married and raised a family. I taught my children to love God, treat people with kindness and respect and not to judge others because you do not walk in their shoes, even if you disagree with their opinions. I rode behind a car with a bumper sticker which stated, “I vote my faith ----- ----“. What have I missed in all these years? What religion teaches ridiculing others who disagree with your opinion? Verbally or physically attacking others? And that infidelity is OK? What have I missed?
Thank you, Officer I recently went to Krown Undercoating in East Rochester to have my car undercoated. I met a younger man waiting for work on his truck in the lounge room. He commented on my Navy veteran hat and thanked me for my service. I asked him where he worked and he said he worked for the city of Rochester. I asked if it was inside or outside work. He said he was a cop and he was going in for the afternoon shift. After further discussions he said that he worked in the Clinton Ave. area of Rochester. After a few minutes, he was called away because his truck was finished. A few minutes later I was also called to get my car. When I got to the front desk they said that the last gentleman paid my $150 bill. I was blown away because I am used to paying my own way. I ended up paying it forward for another person having a truck undercoated. I really appreciated this very kind gesture from this officer and thought that it was worthy of a public thank you because police are getting a lot of negative publicity. A shout out! My local village did a trunk or treat for the first time this year and I heard it was pretty successful. I love hearing all the positivity coming from small town's activities and upgrades!
Ignoring a 4 way stop sign On the morning of Oct. 25 at 6:50 am I left my parked car across from my cousin’s house to babysit. Before I could get across the road, a car came to the stop sign, never stopped, sped up around the corner and nearly hit me. He quickly veered around me but was too close for comfort and never slowed down.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Honoring our Community’s Military Veterans Display at East Bloomfield Historical Society BY K A I T L I N D O N N A N
W
alking along the display case and exhibits of the East Bloomfield Historical Society places its visitors back in time, with a focus on local individuals and their hand in history. Dating back to World War II, the displays feature uniforms, photos, and more, allowing visitors to work their way through the years and various conflicts local servicemen and women were involved in, just in time for Veterans Day. “We have uniforms, flags, photos, a WAV uniform, and more,” said Judi Stewart, a historian at the East Bloomfield Historical Society. “We also have two sealed trunks and are opening them some 60 years later to a treasure trove of artifacts.” Cheryl Walters, an East Bloomfield History Society Trustee, is spearheading the exhibit, and through a series of interviews and compiling biographies of military experience, stories will put visitors in Pearl Harbor on boats, sitting in Hyde Park with Winston Churchill, and even delve into moments in Vietnam. “When you can put their biographies with the uniforms of individual people, suddenly visitors can really see what their family members did, and that is such a rich, wonderful experience,” Stewart said. “Cheryl has been in contact with families who have members who fought in or went to war. People really want their family members represented here.”
Another artifact recently acquired by the East Bloomfield History Society is an unpublished book entitled A Promise Kept, written by Sgt. Wayne Raulerson and his niece, Dr. Melissa Call, by Sgt. Henry “Hank” Trickey. Written about the Battle of Hamburger Hill in Vietnam from May 10th-20th, 1969, A Promise Kept documents a platoon’s experience in combat and a promise that whoever survived would visit their fallen brothers’ graves. Sgt. Raulerson did just that, seeking out his camrades’ families and leaving a quarter on each of his fallen brothers’ headstones. “A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier’s family know someone stopped by to pay their respects,” said Stewart. “If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means you trained at boot camp together and a dime means you served together. A quarter is significant because it means you were there when that solider was killed.” A Promise Kept tells the story of soldiers killed in action or MIA, sharing their last words and giving them closure. Sgt. Raulerson wrote his story at the behest of his niece and, through Sgt. Trickey, donated a copy of his book to the East Bloomfield Historical Society in honor of Army Specialist Four Joseph Williams of West Bloomfield, NY, who was killed in action at Hamburger Hill on May 18, 1969.

Raulerson, is a former member of the 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles”, and Second Battalion-502nd Infantry and was stationed in the A Shau Valley during the Vietnam War. “I remember when the Vietnam War was taking place,” said Stewart. “The conflicts we’ve had tend to feel far away and abstract, but physically being able to see what took place in the past connects it more with reality. The exhibit tells a story, and that is important.” Today, many veterans still do not wish to discuss their experiences in combat and what they’ve endured. “We still have people coming back without the support they need. We do not always pay tribute to these people and thank them like we should.” “We have so many Veterans who have never talked about their experiences with their family members,” Walters said. “We need to reach out to them, and the younger generation needs to know what happened. More people thank Veterans now than they did when they came back from Vietnam.” Walters also states people need to learn more about all service members involved. “We do not know a lot about the women in service; they (and medics) were right out there in the combat area with the soldiers. They saved numerous lives. What they did was not for nothing.” “Honoring our Community’s Military” will run between now and Veterans Day, showcasing over 40 uniforms from WWII to present, over 70 biographies of community soldiers, military artifacts including service medals, helmets, field and personal gear, letters to home, photographs, and other memorabilia. The East Bloomfield Historical Society will be hosting a luncheon on November 10th for all local Veterans free of charge. Sgt. Henry “Hank” Trickey will also host a speech at the Bloomfield Central School auditorium on November 10th at 7:00pm with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend. For question or more info. on the East Bloomfield Historical Society, call (585) 657-7244 or visit www.ebhs1838.org.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
REASONS TO GET AN AIR FRYER Create healthier foods: Since air fryers rely on little or no oil, fat content in the cooking process drops considerably. That makes air frying a heart-healthy option, particularly for people who appreciate fried foods but not all of the negatives associated with such dishes.
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Taking a Tetanus Vaccine With an Allergy Requires Careful Monitoring ---
WHAT IS A GUM STIMULATOR?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told by my doctor that I need a tetanus booster shot, but when I was 17, I cut my foot and needed stitches. I was told then that I was allergic to the tetanus shot, so they gave me penicillin instead. Of course, that was a long time ago, since I’m now 81 years old. How could they have determined I was allergic to the shot, and is that even reliable? Can I be tested now? Or do I even need to be tested? -- M.N. ANSWER: Reactions to vaccines are common, but they were much more common 64 years ago, when the purity of vaccines was far less than what it is now. One reaction that was common in the 1950s is called an Arthus reaction, which causes painful swelling at the injection site within a few hours -- the worst swelling usually occuring around 24 hours later, and then slowly decreasing. You are unlikely to get that type of allergic reaction because of better vaccines, and because it has been so many years since you’ve taken the vaccine. Very few people get anaphylactic reactions. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition, which often starts with skin symptoms such as hives or swelling; respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion, discharge or the sensation of the throat closing; gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain; and cardiovascular symptoms such as dizziness and fainting. Any history of anaphylaxis prevents you from getting the same trigger (vaccine or medication) again, if it can be helped. Only a careful history of your symptoms at the time of the allergic reaction you had can provide an answer on which type of reaction it was. Blood testing for allergic reactions is not 100% reliable. If you haven’t had a tetanus vaccine in over 60 years, the decision to get one now really is a judgment call based on your likelihood of exposures. If you do a lot of gardening or hiking, it may be worthwhile to give you a vaccine with careful monitoring. If you were to develop a tetanus-prone wound, such as a deep wound that comes into contact with soil or manure, you would be recommended tetanus immunoglobulin as well as a tetanus vaccine. Penicillin alone is not effective in preventing tetanus: Meticulous wound cleaning is critical, in addition to the shots. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A gum stimulator is a dental tool that can be used at home to strengthen the gums by massaging and stimulating them. The tool has a pointed rubber or silicone tip at the top of a curved metal arm, which is designed to reach hard-to-clean spaces. It is used to massage the gums at the gumline in order to increase blood flow to those areas. This can help heal or prevent gum infections and disease by allowing more oxygen to reach the gum tissues. A gum stimulator can also be used to remove plaque and food debris from underneath the gumline. They additionally work well for cleaning around teeth in people who have large gaps between teeth or missing teeth.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier
(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
FAST FACTS ABOUT THE SUN UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and can cause it to prematurely age.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING Consider relocating. The pandemic forced many companies to transition from in office working to remote working overnight. That trial by fire could have lasting results. A 2020 survey of 317 Chief Financial Officers and leaders in the finance industry found that 74 percent will move at least 5 percent of their previously on-site workforce to permanently remote positions after the pandemic ends. The survey, conducted by Gartner, Inc., also found that nearly one-quarter of respondents will move at least 20 percent of their onsite workers to permanently remote positions. That could make it possible for millions of working professionals to relocate to regions with a lower cost of living than their current towns or cities.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.

Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Social Security Benefit for 2023 It’s official: Our Social Security increase for 2023 will be 8.7%. They say it’s the largest increase in 40 years. For the average senior, that’s going to mean a $146 monthly increase. Plus we’re getting a small “rebate” on that massive Medicare Part B increase we faced last year when the cost went to $170.10 to pay for Aduhelm, an Alzheimer’s disease drug that was said to cost $56,000 per year. (After facing criticism, manufacturers had to cut the cost in half, down to $28,200.) We’ll now save $5.20 on our Part B premium, with the average monthly deduction being $164.90. The Part B annual deductible will drop to $226, a $7 savings. What’s disturbing is that only a few months ago the financial gurus were expecting we’d receive a 10.2% increase on Social Security, based on all the high prices we’ve been seeing this year and will likely see into 2023. Instead, they’ve lowered that to the 8.7% ... while prices have continued to rise. The problem is how those annual increases are calculated. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners And Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which calculates the prices of goods and services for things those urban workers care about: clothing, education, electronics and so on. That CPI-W covers 29% of the population. Instead, they should use the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E), which focuses on goods and services that seniors spend money on: medical, drugs, food, housing and so on. The next time you call your senators and representatives, be sure to ask why the Elderly index isn’t being used. After all, they’ve been thinking about it since the 1980s. Meanwhile, don’t let the Medicare open enrollment period pass you by. Until Dec. 7 you have the option to make changes to your original Medicare Advantage plan, supplemental plan and prescription drug plan.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can avoid injury but still get healthy.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER Keep cargo off the roof. Rooftop cargo boxes can be convenient when traveling on vacations. However, researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory report that such boxes can reduce fuel economy by a significant percentage depending on where drivers are driving. City drivers with rooftop cargo boxes may experience a 2 to 8 percent decline in fuel economy, while vacationers traveling at interstate speeds may notice a decline as high as 25 percent. Cargo boxes are convenient, but they’re not very aerodynamic, so it’s best to remove them after returning home from vacation.

STEPS TO ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

Call 585-591-1624 WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

NEW YORK STATE DOT IS HIRING

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid CDL A or B, a clean driving record, pass a pre-employment physical and drug test and be willing to work nights and weekends. $18.88/hr + benefits
* Use clothespins to reseal bread bags instead of twist ties. I buy colorful plastic ones at the store or have the kids paint wooden ones. Keep them handy in a pretty bowl on the counter! -- J.B. in Rhode Island
Contact your county office to fill out application: Genesee/Orleans 585-343-0502 Livingston 585-346-3036 Monroe Eastside 585-586-4514 Monroe Westside 585-352-3471 Wayne/Ontario 315-332-4000 Wyoming 585-786-3310 Additional information is available at:
* “Fold little dessert paper napkins into triangles and insert into fork tines for place settings. Lemons and limes in a pretty bowl make a simple centerpiece. Fill a small kids pool with ice to keep drinks cold at parties. -- M.F. in Washington

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 6, 1854, John Philip Sousa, “The March King,” is born in Washington, D.C. Sousa composed 136 marches, including “The Washington Post” (1889) and “Stars and Stripes Forever” (1896).
* Before planting anything new in your yard, get in touch with your county agriculture agent to find out about any restrictions. You can also get advice on when and where to plant. -- L.H. in Illinois * When sending cards, attach a return address label to the back so they don’t have to search for the address if they wish to respond. -- D.L. in Minnesota * For dusting, use a clean tube sock and spray with furniture polish, then dust away! It’s easier to get into nooks and crannies. -- C.F. in Oklahoma * “I feel the following is the best way to remove lint from the trap on my dryer. After completion of the drying cycle, take the used Bounce dryer sheet and swipe the screen. Then throw it into the wastebasket located next to the dryer. For loads not using Bounce, take a used one from the wastebasket and use. This puts the Bounce sheet through a complete clothes-drying cycle.” -- G.B. from Minnesota
ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. EMPLOYMENT

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers. EMPLOYMENT

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.
