STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * New York City’s Flatiron building used to cause enough downdrafts to lift the skirts of women passing by, giving a then-daring view of their legs and ankles. The phenomenon resulted in groups of young men regularly gathering on 23rd Street to watch.

PAW’S CORNER INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL

By Sam Mazzotta

The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

Pet Sitting Goes Awry DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last month, I agreed to pet sit for a friend while she and her boyfriend went on vacation. I did this for free because I love pets and want to see if pet sitting as a business is right for me. Bitsy, her 3-year-old cat, was a joy to care for ... the first week. On Monday of the second week, I came to take care of her and Bitsy was laying in the middle of the floor, lethargic. I scooped her up and took her straight to the veterinarian, who thinks she either ingested a toxic houseplant or spoiled food. After fluids and rest at the vet, Bitsy is doing much better. But my friend is angry with me because the vet’s bill is very high. She says it’s my fault that Bitsy got into her houseplant. I followed my friend’s instructions to the letter. Why is it my fault? What should I do? Sign me -- Confused in Denver DEAR CONFUSED: I’m glad Bitsy is doing better. You did the right thing by taking her in for medical care. My advice is to give your friend a little time to process everything that happened. You’ve explained your side already. Hopefully with a little breathing space she will be able to think more clearly and then the two of you can talk and decide what to do. When you open your pet sitting business, take this as a lesson learned. Spell out terms very clearly, stating that the pet owner is responsible for any vet bills incurred due to illness or injury. You can learn much more through groups like Pet Sitter International (https://www. petsit.com/) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (https://petsitters.org/). Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIME HOLIDAY SHOPPING RIGHT

.............................. Cristie Leone

Shop sales, not schedules. If budget is a big concern, shoppers should grab items that are on sale whenever they are available. That can mean shopping at any time of the year. People can try making a master shopping list early in the year and saving it on their mobile phones. While shopping throughout the year, items from the list can be purchased and stored until the holidays.

When you shop small, the bulk of the money you spend and most of your taxes stay local — helping schools, paving streets, keeping you safe. According to the research firm Civic Economics, for every $100 you spend: in a local small business, $68 stays in your community; at a local branch of a chain store, $43 remains; online, virtually no money stays local.

Clarissa’s Country Cupboard 5839 Merrill Rd. Byron • (585) 409-1374 THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY “Black Friday” The term “black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 percent as a result, and the term “black Friday” was coined to refer to that drop.

3456 Galloway Rd., Batavia 585-344-2428/585-297-5268 Open 5/1-12/31, Fri.-Sun. 11am-5pm

The phrase “black Friday” also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police.

Our new store is now open! Take the guesswork out of holiday shopping! Create your wish list in November and have “Santa” pick out your items in December!

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Practicing interpersonal skills: All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

It’s Time to Review, Renew Medicare This is that time of year, again, when we need to make decisions about Medicare plans. From Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, we are eligible to compare our coverage between the original Medicare, Advantage plans and the Part D drug plans in open enrollment. They change every year, and we need to know how those changes will impact us. To compare plans, go online to Medicare.gov and click on Preview 2022 Health & Drug Plans. Click on the plans you’d like to see and enter your ZIP code. If you want to compare drug costs, enter that data as well. Have pen and paper on hand and do the math. While it’s said that the average Advantage plan will come down $2, the average drug plan will go up that much. Beware the deductibles. If you have an Advantage plan and think you want to continue it, read the fine print. If you’re used to having benefits for glasses, gym membership or other things, check to be sure you’ll still have those. Compare all of the plans to get what you need. If you have a Part D drug plan and need insulin, be especially careful in selecting your plan. An additional 500 plans will include insulin this year, but again, read the fine print to be sure it’s what you need. A warning: Be sure your drugs are covered. If you have questions you can call 1-800-MEDICARE, 24/7, to get help. You can also seek assistance at the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) for your state (www.shiphelp.org). If you are low income or have a disability, you might be eligible for the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). They help pay for premiums and deductibles, as well as co-payments. Go online to cms.gov and search for Medicare Savings Programs. Click on one of the four categories for more information and income limits. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DID YOU KNOW? Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

Congressman Chris Jacobs Visits Arc Day Habilitation Center Arc GLOW Leadership Share Merger News and Legislative Concerns BY SHELLEY FALITICO

I

n October, Representative Chris Jacobs met with Arc GLOW leadership and toured the agency’s Day Habilitation Center on Barrville Road in Elba. During the tour he had a chance to meet individuals with disabilities who attend programs there and greet some of the staff.

Team members discussed the staffing shortage Arc GLOW and its sister chapters throughout the State are experiencing, and the need to secure adequate government funding to pay Direct Support Professionals a wage commensurate with their ability, experience, and performance.

Following the tour, Jacobs spent over an hour with Arc GLOW The importance of employment opportunities for individuals leadership including Chief Executive Officer, Martin Miskell, Board wanting a job in the community was also brought to the table, as President Cheryl Englert and Board Vice President Debrah Fischer. October was National Disability Employment Awareness Month. CEO Martin Miskell shared news of the recent merger of Arc of Genesee Orleans and The Arc Livingston-Wyoming, resulting in Arc GLOW, geographically the largest chapter of The Arc New York. The disability provider’s four-county service area now covers roughly 2,400 square miles and serves nearly 2,000 children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families and employs 1,000 staff members. The group discussed advocacy priorities including the Better Care Better Jobs Act. This bill includes an investment in the disability service system as part of a COVID-19 economic recovery to support care for Medicaid recipients, and create more and better jobs for the workforce that provides that care. Kathy welcomes Congressman Chris Jacobs to the Arc Day Habilitation Center in Elba.

Congressman Jacobs said he was honored to tour the Arc GLOW facility in Elba to see firsthand the critical services provided to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our rural communities. “Organizations like Arc are crucial to providing essential support and educational services, as well as providing members of our I/DD community with meaningful employment opportunities. The leadership is incredibly passionate and doing a wonderful job, and I look forward to continuing our strong partnership to improve access to these services,” Jacobs said. Cost: W hile cost should not be the only consideration w hen choosing a family vehicle, parents must determine their budget before beginning their search for a new ride. Aside from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people w ill ever make, w hich only highlights the importance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families. Luxury cars, SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive vehicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids w ith college educations to consider might find that less expensive vehicles make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leasing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, w hich can be pricey, w hile buying outright affords vehic le ow ners to c hoose the level of c overage they are most comfortable w ith. BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms. Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes. Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk. The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus. Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports. Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following: • Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com. • Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans. • Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky. • Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time. Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal.

STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

Where are we headed? It is being said that sales in some industries are the lowest that they have been since the Great Recession. The price of gas continues to climb; industries continue to suffer from a lack of workers and a shortage of supplies; the national debt continues to mount, and inflation continues to rise. Cargo ships sit off the US coast, unable to unload their goods. Every day you see the shelves in the stores get barer with no relief in site. DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * President John F. Kennedy was buried without his brain. The original reason given was that it had been “lost” during his autopsy, but in 2018, newly released U.S. government documents revealed that his brother, Robert Kennedy, ordered the brain secretly destroyed to ensure that it would never be displayed in a museum.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

You’re Never Too Old for HPV Infection ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column stating that the HPV vaccine is recommended up to age 45. Are people older than 45 years no longer susceptible to HPV? Asking for a 52-yearold friend (who thinks he’s Wolverine). -- C.F. ANSWER: The comic character Wolverine has a mutant healing ability (that’s how he was able to survive having his bones replaced with adamantium), so he has nothing to worry about. However, non-mutants do have to worry about HPV, which can come from any kind of skin-toskin contact with a person who has HPV. Having the virus often means having warts, but sometimes people can have contagious HPV without having any visible lesion. It’s been estimated that 90% of people with HPV don’t know they have it. People of any age are susceptible to HPV. Most people have been exposed by age 45, which is why the recommendations are the way they are now, but vaccination might make sense in some situations. The clearest example is someone who has had very few sexual partners and is about to become more sexually active (for example, a person recently divorced or widowed). Although the vaccine is not indicated by the Food and Drug Administration in this situation and the person is likely going to have to pay out of pocket, it might still be worth it to get the vaccine to reduce the risk of acquiring a new sexually transmitted HPV infection. I received several letters from people who acquired new genital warts in just this situation who were upset that their doctor did not offer the vaccine. If people have already been exposed to HPV, the vaccine will not harm them. In fact, there is some anecdotal evidence that the vaccine might help people with difficult-to-treat warts by boosting the immune system specifically for HPV. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Preparticipation conditioning and stretching can help reduce the risk of injury.

We Care About

Your Smiles THE GROWING USE OF LASERS IN DENTISTRY Dental lasers are classified as either hard or soft tissue lasers, depending on the intended use. New medical laser technology is being used many ways in dentistry and has a large range of applications. In some cases, it can even replace the need for the traditional dental drill. Lasers can be used to remove or reshape tissue, repair fillings, remove cavities, and accelerate whitening procedures. Some of the potential benefits of medical lasers include significant reduction of pain and quicker post procedure healing while reducing bleeding. The use of diode lasers, a type of photobiomodulation (the low-energy application of light to tissues), has produced a 100 percent reduction in long-term bacteria.

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Use eucalyptus oil. This oil is great to have in the house to help clear up sinuses and provide nasal congestion relief. Mix a small amount with coconut oil and rub onto the chest. There also is some evidence that adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to cleansing products can help kill dust mites around the house.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Three ways to use an empty tissue box: 1) Store plastic grocery bags inside; 2) line with a small plastic trash bag and use in your car as a travel trash can; 3) cut out the bottom and use it to disguise an extra toilet tissue roll in your guest bath! * Love oranges? Save the peels to add to your potpourri mix. Remove as much of the pith as possible and cut into strips. Air dry in bright light for about a week. Or you can set the strips on parchment and dry in a partially closed oven set to 175 F for about 45 minutes. Check often.

Night Shift Warehouse Supervisor Position

* “To separate yolks from egg whites, simply crack eggs into a shallow bowl and ‘suck’ the yolk out using an empty plastic water bottle. Squeeze the bottle slightly, then position the mouth of the bottle at the yolk and let go. It will magically slide up into the bottle, leaving the whites behind!” -- T.T. in New York

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.
