TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Cranberry Chutney Makes 3 cups

1 1-pound bag fresh cranberries

2 navel oranges, unpeeled, cut into 6 wedges and then into thin slices

1⁄3 cup golden raisins

1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1⁄2 teaspoon whole cloves

1⁄2 teaspoon ground ginger

1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt

1⁄2 cup apple cider

1⁄2 cup honey, preferably cranberry honey

1⁄4 cup apple cider vinegar

1. Pour the cranberries into a 2-quart pot. Add the oranges, raisins, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, salt, apple cider, honey, and vinegar. Bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat to low and simmer until the chutney thickens, about 20 minutes.

2. Remove from the heat and serve warm or, if you prefer, chill and serve cold.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie

* Between 1970 and 1973, four Israeli fighter pilots held as POWs in an Egyptian prison passed their time by translating J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” from English into Hebrew. The book was sent to them by their family members via the Red Cross. The pilots’ version was published commercially in 1977 and is still considered by many to be one of the best Hebrew translations available.

GREAT WEEKEND GETAWAY IDEAS

Soak up the city lights. Big cities tend to clear out on summer weekends, which can make this an ideal time to visit. City visitors won’t have to contend with the sizable crowds that descend on metropolises in winter, when indoor entertainment is in high demand. That means savvy travelers also may find discounts on live theater and local concerts. It also won’t be as difficult to book reservations at the latest culinary hotspots, particularly for travelers who book early.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES

How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.

Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES

Contain the pup when you can’t provide it with your undivided attention. It only takes a moment for a puppy to wander off and have an accident.

PAW’S CORNER

INTRODUCING A NEW PET TO YOUR CAT

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently adopted a year-old puppy. “Max” is a friendly, well-socialized dog, and during the trial stay a month ago, my 10-year-old cat, “Nora,” seemed to tolerate him. Well, on the second day that Max was home, he started barking excitedly. Nora sprang up and attacked him, cornering Max on the sofa. She batted him around the snout several times. Now, Max slinks out of the room anytime that Nora appears. How can I make peace between them? -- Gerry G., Manchester, New Hampshire

DEAR GERRY: I’m sorry to hear that! Introducing a new pet into an established household can be stressful for both pets and sometimes unpredictable. And any negative interactions that occur -- from hissing and barking to an all-out boxing match -- can make future harmony nearly impossible to achieve. One or both pets may begin to exhibit behavioral issues like aggression, soiling in the house, chewing and scratching, and more.

For the foreseeable future, you’ll need to manage and monitor all interactions between Max and Nora. As soon as they begin to react negatively, they need to be separated.

Reintroduce the two gradually. I recommend taking Max for a nice, long walk before each meeting so that some of his puppy energy is worked off beforehand. Work intensively with Max on basic commands like sit, stay, lie down and come here. When Max is in the room with Nora, have him sit or lie down close to you -- they don’t have to meet face to face. Limit interaction time to five minutes or less at first, then gradually increase the time.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

WHEN SEDATION IS NECESSARY FOR DENTAL WORK

Most routine dental procedures can be done using local anesthetic to numb the pain. For more involved procedures, and for severe dental anxiety, a dentist may use intravenous sedation for a deeper level of relaxation. In dentistry, IV sedation is called “conscious sedation dentistry” or “twilight sleep” because, although the patient is technically awake, they feel no pain and often have no memory of the procedure. Different levels of IV sedation are used for different procedures and patients. Mild sedation allows the dentist and patient to communicate during the procedure. Moderate sedation may cause the patient to fall asleep and have little memory. Deep sedation causes the patient to sleep through the procedure with no memory of the event.

No matter what your oral concerns may be, we want you to be comfortable coming to our office. We try to make all our patients’ visits as relaxing as possible. If you are hesitant about visiting the dentist and haven’t done so in a while, we invite you to call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL and find out how satisfying, rewarding, and even life-changing a visit to the dentist can be. For full-service, patient-friendly dental care in a comfortable atmosphere, make an appointment today at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246

P.S. So-called “twilight sleep” caused by IV sedation is a type of amnesia that blocks pain by causing the temporary inability to form new memories.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with several liver cysts over 15 years ago. My primary doctor and I followed the growth of the cysts by ultrasound, and one is increasing in size. We did an MRI with and without contrast to take a look at the cyst. The radiologist stated that the cyst looked “complex” and, for a lack of a better word, unusual.

A liver specialist’s consult revealed that we could remove it if I wanted to. The doctor stated that he just had a patient who had a cyst, and it was cancerous. He felt that it may be best to remove it, but it’s not urgent to do so.

I would appreciate your take on this situation. -- L.S.

ANSWER: Simple liver cysts are common, and even when they are large, they do not need to be removed unless they cause symptoms. However, any other cyst than a simple one needs to be carefully evaluated. There are many possible causes, including various types of cancer, especially a mucinous cystic neoplasm, which can be associated with invasive cancer.

I looked at both the ultrasound and MRI reports you sent, and although it seemed to me that the radiologists thought this was likely a simple cyst with some bleeding, they could not be sure. Furthermore, the growth in the size of the cyst is concerning. In some cases, it’s reasonable to wait and redo the scans in 6-12 months when the risk of a cancerous cyst is low. However, since the liver specialist (who has much more experience than I do) is concerned enough to recommend surgery, I don’t understand why you would want to wait. I suspect the surgery will prove that it was a benign cyst, but you’ll probably sleep better at night once you know for certain. The surgery is normally done laparascopically, and although it’s usually a very safe and effective surgery, there is always a small risk for complications. You should speak with a surgeon.

DR. ROACH WRITES: Do you have any comments on the use of metformin for weight loss and prediabetes? I am a 57-yearold woman. -- B.S.

ANSWER: Factor V is a protein that is critical in making clots, and an abnormThat’s one question I can answer based on very good data. The National Diabetes Prevention Program looked at this very issue. Subjects in the study (who averaged 51 years of age and were overweight with prediabetes) were treated with metformin, an intensive lifestyle-behavioral-change program that aimed for a low-fat diet and 150 minutes of exercise per week, or a placebo. The diet and exercise group had the best response, decreasing the rate of new diabetes by 58% compared to the placebo group. However, the metformin group also had a benefit, with a 31% decrease in the rate of new diabetes diagnoses. Personally, I recommend both. Metformin does help a bit with weight loss, but taking it along with some diet changes and exercise would likely have a much better response than metformin alone. We don’t recommend a low-fat diet anymore, instead emphasizing whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and very few processed foods. A registered dietician would be a valuable partner in helping with the diet of your regimen. You don’t need to exercise for the whole 150 minutes, but it’s a goal you can work toward. New studies show that drugs like semaglutide are even more effective at preventing diabetes, but they are very expensive and often not covered by insurance.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Reviving the Magic:

Jim DeLooze’s Joy Project Brings Christmas Spirit to LeRoy

For Jim DeLooze of LeRoy, Christmas has always embodied joy, magic, and wonder... qualities he hopes to bring to the entire community through his ambitious project, “ e Joy Project.”

Inspired by holiday traditions that once lit up Sibley’s department store in Rochester, DeLooze brings his passion for classic Christmas displaystodowntownLeRoy,hopingitwillevokethesameexcitement Sibley’s once did.

With a huge Christmas village and train display, “department store windows” with animatronics and accompanying story, and hand-painted murals of Christmases of yesteryear by local artist, Lorie Longhany (funded by a grant from GoArt! [Genesee Orleans Regional Arts Council]), DeLooze’s display harkens to Sibley’s decades-long holiday spectacle, enticing visitors to enter Toyland and the Enchanted Tunnel to see iconic animatronic characters.

For years, DeLooze has been creating his own train set, posting photos and videos on social media to share the joy. He feels happy when he puts a smile on people’s faces or brightens their day with the holiday spirit. He’s excited to share the project in a broader way through the display in LeRoy.

e Joy Project consists of two main displays at St. Mark’s Church Exhibit Hall. e first is a diorama based on e Cinnamon Bear, an iconic 1937 holiday radio show DeLooze still listens to each year. is beloved series follows Judy and Jimmy Barton on an adventure with e Cinnamon Bear, Santa Claus’s assistant, as they search for a lost Silver Star tree ornament in the magical world of Maybeland. is beloved classic has maintained a dedicated following, with radio stations and streaming services still broadcasting it each Christmas.

e Joy Project is set to open to the public from November 30 through December 22, Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. While bringing this project to life has been a dream for DeLooze, he acknowledges the journey was far from simple. Transporting the diorama from Chicago posed a logistical challenge for DeLooze and St. Mark’s. Yet, the community’s response to his requests for donations and volunteer help has been “unbelievable.” According to DeLooze, “ e Penny Saver played a big role in getting this project going: From a simple ask for donations of Christmas houses in the Give and Take column, the community’s response was

DeLooze, a lifelong fan of e Cinnamon Bear, secured the diorama a er connecting with its previous Chicago owner, whose family had cherished it for generations. Tony, son of the diorama’s builder, chose DeLooze as the diorama’s recipient because of DeLooze’s commitment to preserving the spirit of e Cinnamon Bear, inviting people to come see it free of charge.

Accompanying e Cinnamon Bear diorama is DeLooze’s own recreation of the Sibley’s Christmas display, which he has been dreaming of for nearly 40 years. Inspired by his memories of being taken to Sibley’s as a child, Jim cra ed miniature Christmas scenes in his home for his grandchildren over the past eight years. “When Sibley’s closed in the mid-80s,” he says, “I lost a very important tradition and realized my children and grandchildren would never get to experience that.” Now, with his public display at St. Mark’s, he hopes to rekindle this piece of holiday magic for the community.

DeLooze’s project is fueled by two goals: spreading joy and fosteringtradition.Asheexplains,“Fortheoldergenerations, wehope to rekindle memories of the old-time Christmas store decorations of the ‘50s and ‘60s. For the younger generations, we hope to help families make new traditions.” His vision includes drawing visitors from far and wide.

Looking ahead, DeLooze hopes e Joy Project will become a fixture of LeRoy’s holiday season, with families returning year a er year to share in the Christmas spirit, saying, “Hopefully, it will become a Christmas tradition parents and grandparents will look forwardtobringingtheirchildrentosee.” roughhiswork,DeLooze aims to capture the same magic that made Sibley’s a destination for generations past, creating a place where Christmas spirit can thrive in LeRoy.

Thank you, farmers!

Exiting thru handicap parking

In the world of supermarkets and deliveries, I just want to say thank you to the farmers and farmettes who share of their abundance with their neighbors. Farm stands are a cool great way to buy produce and eggs (even meat sometimes, depending on the farmer) directly from the people who grow it or tend to it. I’ll miss my local farm market for the winter, but I hope you all enjoy a restful respite with your families and friends. I’m sure the season is long and grueling. Please know your neighbors greatly appreciate your hard work!

I would like drivers to know that "cutting thru" the yellow hash markings in the handicap parking areas is illegal. Not that anyone worries about tickets anymore, but what about taking someone's car door off, or worse hitting someone in one of the store’s electric shopping carts. Please use the designated exiting lanes. You've come too close to hitting me or my car door too many times.

Signs for Roundabouts

Young people thank you

I want to thank the young people that are working in the stores where we shop. If you’re not aware, there is a shortage of young workers. I do not take my change from the cashiers but leave it in the hope that they will receive it as a small thank you for their willing to work rather than stay home or on the phone. I would much rather donate to someone I know is helping me and moving forward in life than having the money go to some six figure income executive in a so-called “charitable” organization.

I wish NYS would put signs up at all entrances going into a roundabouts stating that you need to signal your intent when you go into one. I have seen several close calls because people don't signal their intent. It is the law.
