ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That change in holiday travel plans might be more vexing than you’d expected. But try to take it in stride. Also, it couldn’t hurt to use that Aries charm to coax out some helpful cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine determination helps you deal with an unforeseen complication. And, as usual, you prove that when it comes to a challenge, you have what it takes to take it on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a romantic theme dominates much of the week, all those warm and fuzzy feelings don’t interfere with the more pragmatic matters you need to take care of. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Best not to ignore those doubts about an upcoming decision. Instead, recheck the facts you were given to make sure nothing important was left out. A weekend surprise awaits you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No time for a catnap -- yet. You might still have to straighten out one or two factors so that you can finally assure yourself of the truth about a troubling workplace situation. Stay with it. VIRGO (August 23 September 22) News from an old friend could lead to an unexpected (but nonetheless welcome) reunion with someone who had once been very special in your life. Be open to the possibilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It might be time for a family council. The sooner those problems are resolved, the sooner you can move ahead with your holiday preparations. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Take some time out to give more attention to a personal relationship that seems to be suffering from a sense of emotional neglect. Provide that much-needed reassurance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up. That unusual circumstance that might faze most people can be handled pretty well by the savvy Sagittarian. Look at it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone you believe has hurt you in the past might now need your help. Reaching out could be difficult. But the generous Goat will be able to do the right thing, as always. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing is an important part of your preholiday scheduling. Try to give time both to your workday responsibilities and those personal matters you might have neglected. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With the vestiges of your anger about that painful incident fading, you can now focus all your energy on the more positive aspects of your life, including that personal situation. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing your own strong sense of reassurance to others and encouraging them to hope.

THE BIBLE SAYS: “Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.” (Proverbs 23:29-36) “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:” (Colossians 3:5) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. We Care About ut

By Keith Roach, M.D.
Shingles Vaccine Causes Severe Side Effects
by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
TREATING SUBSTANCE ABUSE WITH DENTAL CARE As scientists increasingly delve into the subject of how oral health is linked to overall well-being, they are coming up with some very interesting findings. The latest of these involves a link between good oral care and better treatment outcomes for those suffering from substance abuse. Researchers found that, when comprehensive oral care was part of a more holistic approach to substance abuse treatment, those who had their major oral health problems addressed by a dental professional stayed in treatment approximately twice as long and had a more than 80 percent increase in completing their treatment program. Those receiving comprehensive dental care realized substantial improvements in employment and drug abstinence, as well as a dramatic decrease in homelessness.
---
The importance of good oral health is far-reaching and touches many aspects of the body’s overall health. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL invites you to take advantage of our commitment to the highest quality dental care by calling 585.343.4246 for a convenient appointment. At 6 Batavia City Centre, our services include dietary advice, routine maintenance care, restorative work, and cosmetic approaches to enhance any smile. P.S. The study mentioned above shows that improved dental health leads to improved selfesteem, which contributes to a desire for selfimprovement.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I received the first dose of Shingrix this
www.bataviafamilydental.com
COOKING FOR A HOLIDAY CROWD Most people will eat two to three portions each of appetizers or snacks. In fact, appetizers (for a hungry crowd) may be consumed in greater abundance than subsequent courses.
week and had pretty severe side effects, though in the range of what can be expected: high fever (101.5), intense shivering, a severe headache and 12 hours of extreme fatigue. The entire reaction began 11 hours after the shot and ended 18 hours after that. I am 61 and in excellent health, taking only 25 mcg of levothyroxine daily. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. I’ve tried looking at the clinical trial results for Shingrix, but I am not qualified to understand the information as presented. 1. Is it likely that I’ll have a similar (or worse?) reaction to the second shot? The package insert says one can react to the first, second, neither or both. 2. Are both injections identical? 3. When I had chickenpox as a child, I was way sicker than the average kid. Related? 4. If I get shingles, do I have a higher risk for a severe case? -- J.G. ANSWER: Compared with the previous one-time vaccine Zostavax, the new two-dose Shingrix vaccine is much more effective. However, it does have a higher risk of side effects. You have had the most common side effect, though only 10% of people will have symptoms as bad as yours. These symptoms are caused by your body mounting an inflammatory response to the glycoprotein in the vaccine (the new vaccine does not contain a live virus). You clearly have a robust system to fight off infection. To answer your questions in order: You are at higher risk for a similar reaction for the second shot. I would plan your day accordingly, and premedicate with Tylenol (even though it may make the vaccine slightly less effective). The second vaccine is identical to the first. I have read reports that there have been shortages of the vaccine. Chickenpox and shingles can affect you both by the virus attacking you and by an exuberant inflammatory and immune reaction. I would guess that you are at lower risk for viral complications (such as infection of the eye, brain or lungs) but at higher risk for symptoms due to your own system, such as high fever. In many cases, the body’s response to infection can be as damaging as the infection itself. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year I was treated for gout and was prescribed allopurinol (100 mg) once a day. Approximately five to six months after I started taking it, I became lethargic and was not feeling myself (I am a very young 77 years old) and suddenly lost my sense of taste. I was taken off the medicine and still have little taste sensation other than citrus fruits, apples and spices. I was told that this could last for months, years or forever. Do you have any suggestions for me? I am eating as before, hoping that I will recover my taste. -- N.K. ANSWER: I certainly found that allopurinol can cause loss of taste sensation, but the Food and Drug Administration case reports don’t say how long it can last. Unfortunately, I can’t find any reliable way (or even plausible way) to increase the likelihood of getting your taste sensation back. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Dec. 11, 1961, the ferry carrier USNS Core arrives in Saigon with the first U.S. helicopter unit, including 33 helicopters and 400 air and ground crewmen. Their assignment was to airlift South Vietnamese Army troops into combat.
Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES One of the advantages of Scotch pine trees is their needle retention. Experts say Scotch pine needles will not drop off even if the tree is dry. Scotch pine is an introduced species brought to North America by European settlers, and it’s known for dark green foliage and sturdy, stiff branches. The Scotch pine is one of the most popular Christmas trees today.

GREAT GIFTS FOR HOLIDAY HOSTS
WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE
Holiday photo frame or album: Men and women like to host family during the holidays because it’s a great chance to make lasting memories and reconnect with loved ones. Help hosts commemorate those memories by giving them a photo frame in which they can place a picture of the whole family, or an album where they can place various photos of the family from this holiday season.
Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.

HOW TO ORGANIZE OFFICE GIFT EXCHANGES Close-knit groups of employees commonly exchange gifts with one another come the holiday season. Friendly coworkers enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of their friends and fellow employees, and these informal gift exchanges can benefit company morale and establish a familial atmosphere at the office. In spite of the good-natured reasons to exchange gifts with coworkers, some people are nervous about the prospect of gifting fellow employees. Questions regarding what makes for an appropriate gift or how much to spend may arise, turning office gift exchanges into potentially puzzling situations.

SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

In Honor of Robert “Bob” Howe Everywhere I look seems to be your work. Concrete jobs, buildings and homes you’ve built. So many lifelong friends you have, we will all never forget you. We had twenty great years together. You name it, we went through it, and we made it through and never walked away. We always did it together. We always came out stronger and more in love. We never backed out and leaving was never an option. There was nothing you couldn’t do or fix. You were an avid hunter. You would help people in a minute. You are missed just like your father before you. You were both all-around great guys! I lost you but I gained God, the person who got me through the past year. I am so happy and grateful for our twenty years together. No amount of money or things ever compared to our love. It was priceless. You cannot buy love. I know you’re up there in Heaven with your family and Wally, helping people. One great man gone way before his time. You will never be forgotten. RIP. Love Always and Forever, Christina and Friends

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Share some cooking duties. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

Retail Etiquette: 12 Do’s for Shopping Local this Holiday Season! By Susan Vernick of Etiquette Chics: Etiquette & Protocol Consultants he Christmas and holiday shopping season is upon 9. I would venture to say, do so even if they are not • Be kind and courteous to wait and service staff, maybe even having a great day themselves. Always say, “hello” “please” and extra kind! “thank you.” This is sometimes all they need to put a smile on 10. Be Thankful for Local. Local retailers offer not only a hometheir face and brighten their day. Try your very best to do this, town experience, but often they know us and even know our regardless of how much you have on your plate and how hurnames. (Can you say, Cheers & Norm!?) If it is a “seven (or whatever number) makes up for the difference. items or less” express lane, stay at or close to that amount and do not load up the conveyer belt with above that number. It will slow down the “express” process and get you quickly on to Santa’s naughty list! Also, help bag your things if the cashier is busy scanning multiple items. 3. Hold No Fault. Do not hold salespeople responsible for issues that are beyond their control such as pricing, expired coupons and out of stock items; remembering that local retailers may have a smaller inventory. This is not in their area of control. If necessary, kindly ask to speak to a manager, but always keep the conversation kind and respectful. 4. Be Prepared. Have your form of payment, as well as any coupons ready when you approach the register. This helps avoid delays and is courteous to the customers behind you,

as well. 5. Be Phone Free. Try to avoid talking on the phone when you are paying for a purchase. Certainly, at times, this is unavoidable, but do your very best to abide by this simple guideline. 6. “After You!” Let those in front of you go first when a new lane opens up at the store. Cutting from the back of the line to get to the front of a newly opened lane is never a nice thing to do, especially during the jolly days of the holiday season. You don’t want to find a clump of coal in your stocking, so please abide by this simple rule that is kind, courteous and common sense. 7. Be on time. At salons and spas, be on time… always. If you need to cancel, do so 24 hours in advance (unless illness or emergency.) Cancelling may cause your hairdresser/stylist/ technician to lose money during the holiday season and any time of year. Tipping is always a proper etiquette practice. 8. Be generous. If the season allows, donate to the many local charities in our community such as the red kettle campaign, or other fundraisers that help those in need during this holiday season. If nothing else, thank the bell ringers, and others donating their time. It is a very simple way to give back.

11. It’s Non-negotiable. Negotiating prices is not appropriate. Most likely they have their prices set at the very lowest they can offer. Our hometown businesses and retailers are truly a gift to our communities, and that is wonderful thing to remember, not only throughout the season, but throughout the year. 12. Take a Breather. Enjoy the season as you make your way through whatever retail establishment in which you find yourself shopping. Be thankful for your local businesses, admire your town or village’s decorations, attend local tree lightings and take in the sights and sounds of the season. Remember most of all, be thankful for the many blessings you have. (Tip: Consider watching the classic, It’s a Wonderful Life which best highlights hometown businesses.) Your thankfulness and gratitude will certainly be stirred up, if you find yourself running a little low this season. Keep the merriment in the season for those around you with these simple tips. The best gift we can give to each other is not wrapped in festive paper and finished with a bow, it is our kindness, warmth and smile. While you’re at it, try not to forget a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays & Happy New Year!

A Look Back… * On Dec. 13, 1577, English seaman Francis Drake sets out from Plymouth, England, with five ships and 164 men on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. Three years later, Drake’s return to Plymouth marked the first circumnavigation of the earth by a British explorer. * On Dec. 10, 1901, the first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and other explosives. It is believed that Nobel created the prizes out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war. * On Dec. 14, 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer to reach the South Pole, beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott, by more than a month. Amundsen used sleigh dogs, while Scott employed motor sledges, ponies and dogs.

5 Important Medicare Changes Coming For 2020
Financed through USDA, Rural Development. Rent Subsidy provided by - NYS DHCR
(NAPS)—If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, or are considering one, you will have more plan choices with a wider range of benefits to help you better manage your day-to-day health needs during this year’s open enrollment period. Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, gives Medicare enrollees a chance to revisit their Medicare insurance coverage, make sure it still fits their needs and make changes for the coming year.
Housing for Seniors 400 TOWERS
1. New benefits to help those with chronic illness. Starting in January, 2020, some Medicare Advantage Plans will include benefits for people with chronic illness that will help to support their care. A few examples include nutrition services, transportation to doctor’s appointments and home improvements like shower grips and wheelchair access. More traditional services like dental care, vision care and hearing aids also have been expanded.
Maximum income for eligibility: 1 person $38,100 • 2 people $43,550
Batavia Housing Authority Come visit, tour and see for yourself
2. Medicare Advantage premiums will be lower next year. The average monthly premium for Medicare Advantage plans is expected to be $23 in 2020, a decrease of 14% from an average of $26.87 in 2019, and down 28 percent since 2017. The average Medicare Advantage premium this year is the lowest it’s been since 2007.
4. Seeing a doctor without leaving home will get easier. Many seniors will have access to Medicare Advantage telehealth benefits to connect with health care providers online or by phone. For 2020, more than half of all Medicare Advantage plans will offer added telehealth benefits, reaching up to about 1.7 million enrollees. 5. Medigap plan options are changing. Two of the most popular supplemental plans (so-called Medigap plans) used by those enrolled in original Medicare—Plan F and Plan C—will no longer be available to new Medicare members or those born after January 1, 1955. Fortunately, Plan G, another Medigap policy, offers the same level of coverage provided by Plan F—minus the Part B deductible—and will continue to be available after January 2020. The Part B deductible was $185 in 2019. Even if you’re happy with your Medicare coverage, eHealth recommends that you review your current coverage during open enrollment because each year plans can and do make changes in costs, physician networks or drug benefits. Now’s the time to decide which Medicare Advantage plan is best for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Online health insurance broker eHealth outlines five of the most important Medicare changes to be aware of this year:
3. Part D drug plan premiums will be lower, too. The average Medicare prescription drug plan premium for 2020 is $30, a decline of 13.5% as compared with 2019 costs. Savings on out-of-pocket costs may be available as well. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Prepare a familiar dish. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare.

Give them the opportunity to go out to lunch or have coffee with a friend, do some unhurried shopping, pamper themselves at the hairdresser or barbershop or take a relaxing bath. Just let them get away and take some time for themselves. If this is not possible, offer to do the grocery shopping, take items to the dry cleaners, help with the house cleaning, shovel the driveway or whatever would be helpful. Caregivers often feel isolated and lonely. Just being there for the caregiver, who is giving all of themselves to the one they are caring for, is so important.
I was having a bad day and went into the Mexican restaurant, Rancho Viejo on Ellicott St. in Batavia, and a young male waiter spontaneously paid for my meal. As I left the restaurant, we hugged.
Thank you to all the cheerful employees doing any kind of customer service during the holidays. I know from firsthand experience how difficult it can be to stay positive throughout this stressful retail season and service season. Thank you for making everyone’s day a little more jolly!
I would like to thank the Christmas Angel who paid the remaining balance of my layaway at Walmart. It is very much appreciated! Thank you so much for giving my family and myself an amazing Christmas. Bless you and your family this holiday season. I will be paying it forward in the future. Thank you!
Thank you to the Lady Braves volleyball coaches for a great, positive season! And to the parents for organizing a fabulous banquet at the end to celebrate. Everything was great from the photos to the food. Kudos!
leave their pets or children in hot vehicles don’t deserve either! People who do this, in my opinion, are the epitome of ignorance and selfishness. I was only sorry that the cop never showed up during this time so this woman could have been charged with animal cruelty and perhaps even had her sweet little puppy taken from her!

people genuinely trying to be kind to you. I also have offered assistance to people in wheelchairs and not because, as you put it, I “feel sorry” for them. I try to help anyone who may need assistance. I have offered elderly persons help finding their car in a parking lot, assisted a person shorter than I in reaching a high shelf in a grocery store or even a child struggling to open a door. You see, there are people in this world who just want to be kind. Please don’t assume that, as you put it, you are “an object for pity” or that they are dwelling on the fact you are in a wheelchair. Next time, please just say, “No thank you,” and be grateful that there are still kind people in this world.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adversely affect efficiency.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
Visit our Website at www.gvboces.org.
Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
