DID YOU KNOW?
Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY Despite being the shortest month of the calendar year, February has an interesting history. Early calendars marked the start of the new year in March, but when the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, rose to the throne in 713 BC, he synchronized the calendar to the lunar year. That required the addition of January and February.

HOLIDAY BAKING POINTERS Pans should be on the center rack of the oven. If the oven isn’t wide enough to put multiple pans side by side, place them on different racks and slightly offset them to enable air circulation. Use parchment paper. This unsung hero of baking can keep cookies from spreading out on baking sheets, prevent cakes from sticking to pans and may even help batter and dough bake evenly. Cool cakes upside down on a cooling rack. This will help flatten out the tops, which makes it easier to stack and level cakes for layered cakes.

UNIQUE WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their love for each other, whether their relationship is relatively new or has endured through many years. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans are expected to spend close to $20 billion on Valentine’s Day this year. While chocolates and champagne are high on the list of most-purchased items for February 14th, couples should not feel beholden to tradition on Valentine’s Day. This year may be the perfect time to try something new, even if it’s out of couples’ comfort zones. Here are some novel ideas for couple’s looking to set their celebrations apart. Paint and sip: Couples can take part in a growing trend this Valentine’s Day. At paint-and-sip events, people are guided step-by-step through the process of painting their own masterpieces. Breaks are provided through the evening to indulge in beverages and snacks of choice. Couples can bring along a bottle or two of wine and a platter of cheeses, chocolates or other Valentine’s Day fare. Those interested can inquire at their nearest paint and sip location, such as Pinot’s Palette, for Valentine’s Day specials. Activity night: Couples who are naturally competitive or devoted sports fans can enjoy the evening by engaging in some healthy competition. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Some restaurants host trivia nights, or couples can head to the nearest arcade and battle it out. Panic and escape rooms are cropping up in towns across the country. These employ 60-minute real-life experiences in which participants must solve clues to escape the room. This can be a great bonding experience for fun-loving couples. Chef lessons: Although some couples may dine out on Valentine’s Day, men and women who like to dabble in culinary arts can prepare their own meals from the comforts of their own kitchens. Others may want to enroll in classes that provide expert instruction from area chefs or culinary instructors. Cooking classes can be an ideal way to spend time together learning skills that can be put to use again and again. Adventures: Couples who like to push the envelope can explore the possibilities of thrill-seeking activities. Some may include bungeejumping, hot-air balloon rides, taking laps at the racetrack, or hitting the ski slopes. Valentine’s Day might be a time for romance, but couples should not hesitate to buck tradition and spend the day together engaging in activities that accommodate their interests.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Are dogs really happy in freezng weather?
Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com • Share With Us, or mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at descretion of GVPS.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: While walking along the local riverway this frosty weekend, I noticed at least three people whose dogs were under-equipped for the cold. One dog wore an insulated vest but no booties; the other two dogs wore no cold protection at all. Why do so many owners ignore their dogs’ comfort and safety this way? -- Harold in New Hampshire DEAR HAROLD: Unfortunately, not every dog owner knows that it’s up to them to protect their pets from cold-weather hazards. Most dogs won’t ask for a sweater vest, and I’ve yet to meet one that didn’t hate booties. I know quite a few dogs that just won’t tolerate booties.
DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Many owners do know their dogs’ limits in the cold, however. They check the temperature before going outside and survey the sidewalk or trail they’re on for hazards like ice chunks, salt or glazing. They limit the time spent outdoors so their dog’s core temperature doesn’t drop. They monitor their dogs to make sure they’re not shivering or in pain, and that their paws aren’t getting frostbitten. And they carefully wipe and check their dogs’ paws as soon as they get back indoors. How do you, an observer, make sure that an owner is following these guidelines? Confronting owners is not advisable. You may be able to strike up a casual conversation on the path, and ask how their dog tolerates the cold weather. But don’t preach at them. In my experience, owners who take the time to walk their dogs on a leash in freezing weather do care about their health and keep an eye on them in the cold.

FAST FACTS ABOUT THE SUN While the sun is more intense during spring and summer, sun glare may be a bigger problem in the fall and winter. The sun during the colder months takes a lower angled route when rising, rather than seemingly going straight up, which it does in the summer. That keeps the sun in a blinding position for a longer period of time in the fall and winter.

HELPING KIDS FIND HOBBIES Much like adults can benefit from participating in hobbies, children can reap rewards from engaging in hobbies. According to the Child Development Institute, hobbies give children a chance to express themselves. The CDI also notes that hobbies can play an important role in children’s self-discovery and boost their self-esteem. Some children may discover hobbies on their own, requiring little if any assistance on the part of their parents. For example, some kids may display an interest in music that parents, even those with no such musical inclination, can foster by purchasing certain instruments. But some children may need a little more prompting, and parents of such boys and girls can take certain steps to help their youngsters find rewarding hobbies. Involve kids in your own hobbies. Kids look up to their parents and often want to emulate what their mothers and fathers do. If possible, involve children in your own hobbies. Gardeners can teach their youngsters how to grow and tend to a garden, while painters can host family painting nights where everyone is encouraged to create their own masterpiece. Parents whose hobbies are more adult-oriented, like woodworking, can still involve their children. For example, work with children to design a new item, then show them how the item goes from paper to finished product; just avoid allowing them to use any unsafe tools or machines. Let kids choose an activity. While some children might take to hobbies their parents favor, others might need to be given some freedom to find their own activities. Afford youngsters this chance, recognizing that it might take some time before kids find an activity that genuinely sparks their passion. Be a source of encouragement. Some hobbies may prove more difficult than kids first imagined, requiring some perseverance before they can be enjoyed fully. In such instances, observe youngsters while they engage in the activity. If they appear to be enjoying themselves but are periodically frustrated, encourage them to keep trying. If kids appear to be disinterested in overcoming any struggles, then they might benefit by pursuing another hobby. Don’t hesitate to focus on fun. Hobbies can teach kids valuable lessons and provide a sense of fulfillment, but it’s important that parents not overlook the importance of fun in regard to their children’s hobbies. Hobbies can provide children with the same respite from busy schedules that they do adults, and that break should be as fun as possible.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?
By Keith Roach, M.D.
How to Take Precautions When a Family Member Has Mono
HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was exposed to infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) at college, and she is coming to spend a week at home. What precautions do we need to take to make sure that the rest of the family remains safe? How long does the virus stay active on surfaces? Also, can she get her flu and COVID shots? -- D.G. ANSWER: Mono is classically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but very similar symptoms can be caused by other agents, viruses and even a parasite as well. The virus is transmitted through saliva. The latency period (the time from exposure until the time of symptoms) is longer than you might expect; four to six weeks is typical. Not everybody develops symptoms. Younger children seldom develop symptoms at all when infected, yet they still receive immunity. Unfortunately, they may shed infectious virus particles for months, years or even decades. It is likely that the adults in your family are immune, since 90% of adults have had an EBV infection before. EBV is not a particularly infectious disease, so transmission to family members is uncommon. Still, you should avoid sharing anything that saliva touches, like food, cups or toothbrushes. You don’t need to take special precautions with surfaces. She can get the flu and COVID vaccines as long as she feels well and doesn’t have a fever.

HOW TOBACCO USE AFFECTS TEETH Smoking and using smokeless tobacco products can cause several oral health issues including tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss, and mouth cancer. The nicotine and tar in tobacco can stain teeth in a short amount of time. People who smoke have higher levels of bacterial plaque, which causes gum disease, and smokers over 65 are twice as likely to have gum disease. Smoking decreases oxygen in the bloodstream so that infected gums don’t heal as well. In addition to lung and throat cancer, smoking also causes mouth cancer. If you use tobacco products, you should visit your dentist every three to six months, more often than non-smokers, so your hygienist can keep an eye on your gum and mouth health.
It’s one of life’s simple truths—no one gets more than one set of permanent teeth. Teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but you have to work at it; you have to want to keep them badly enough to do what needs to be done. And if that means protecting them by adopting healthy habits, eating and drinking healthy foods and beverages, brushing and flossing regularly, and having regular professional visits, then we hope you will call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment at 585.343.4246. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Forty-three percent of smokers over 65 have lost all their teeth.

Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Rose DeWitt Bukater’s fabulously expensive pendant, “The Heart of the Ocean,” featured in James Cameron’s “Titanic,” was not completely fictitious -- it is believed that a rather large sapphire went down with the ship that fateful night. * There is a company called Little Miss Matched that sells packs of mismatched socks. * Syphilis was a major problem in the late 19th and early 20th century. Doctors found that the bacteria that caused it was sensitive to heat, so they thought giving a patient a fever could help get rid of it. How did they induce said fever? With malaria injections! While effective in curing syphilis, some patients unfortunately died from -- you guessed it -- malaria. * Before mercury, brandy was used to fill thermometers.

Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church Rallies to Restore Organ BY LORI BRUTON
I
n the heart of Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church lies a historic treasure, gasping for air as the soulful notes that resonated through this sacred space since 1907 faded away.
Devoted individuals like Greg McAllister, Rob Willhoft, and Alden Snell united to revive the dying heartbeat of their precious pipe organ. Under the leadership of Pastor Brandt Hammack, the congregation decided to band together to bring this rare treasure back to life. Arrangements were made, ideas were composed, and the miracle of music lives on. Alden Snell, a key player in this resurrection symphony, first encountered the Bergen church organ during his junior year at Roberts Wesleyan College in 1999. His lifelong love of music began at the tender age of three when he lined up dominoes like a keyboard, pretending to play the organ. He earned his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music. After moving to Delaware with his wife, Christin, they came back to Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church. However, the organ was not behaving. Alden had a vision and presented it to Session members and the congregation, proposing the choice between letting the organ die a slow death or bringing it back to life. They agreed to save this treasure and embarked on a journey of restoration. Crafted at Charles Viner & Son in Buffalo, New York, the organ was originally a theater organ. Charles Viner, Sr., born in England, moved to Westfield, Massachusetts with his family just after the Civil War. A relative of Eunice Ely brought the organ to the Bergen church, and Eunice’s father hand-pumped the bellows to make the organ play. The organ was moved from Buffalo to Bergen in 1907 – the church’s 100th-anniversary. Renovations took place in the 1960s and again in the late 1980s, with dedicated church members including Fred Ely volunteering to physically redo the leathers and felts that held the keys together. Recently, the rallying cry for the organ’s restoration again echoed through the pews, leading to a pledge campaign and various fundraisers. The mechanical marvel, powered only by electricity for the blower, Alden playing organ required an overhaul. The pipes needed cleaning, keyboards were warped, and the air system begged for rejuvenation. Renovation involved organ pipe voicing, woodworkers, and designers crafting a custom wind system.
music out of the organ, saying, “The music you can get out of the organ is glorious to honor and praise the Lord.” Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian hosts a rededication of the historic pipe organ as well as a concert series to offer the community a nostalgic musical experience with performances by Eastman School of Music students, as well as Alden himself, Roberts Wesleyan Brass Quintet, Jaclyn Breeze (flute), and George Collichio (guitar). Alden will play pieces performed in 1907, as well as pieces from 1982 and 1990. Jaclyn Breeze, who started piano at 4 years old and was taught by her mom, will play in the Bergen concert series with a hymn sing at the end. Her previous concert series focused on flute music of the last 100 years, and this Spring she is doing another series with pieces that involve a solo flute, imitating other things such as trains, fish, and butterflies. George Collichio’s music interest was sparked at 6 years old by his guitar playing parents. Collichio founded Collichio School of Music in Rochester, and is now a National Recording Artist, Performer, Music Educator, and private guitar instructor. As the sounds of music reverberate through the revitalized pipes, Bergen Evangelical Cal Parsons and Fred Ely Presbyterian Church stands as a in front of organ testament to the power of unity, passion, and the enduring resonance of history and melody. The rededication is not just a celebration of a restored organ; it’s a celebration of a community that refused to let its musical legacy fade away. The notes played on this organ tell a story of perseverance, dedication, and the unwavering belief that, with a united voice, even the faintest melody can be brought back to life. For more information www.epcbergen.org/events24.
Renovation was complete in November 2023. History and music came together as people raised their voices in praise and worship, standing united for each other and their community. The music ministry includes singing hymns and other instruments. In the early days, Bev Rogers and Eunice Ely sang in the choir. Gordon and Delores Seward, loyal church members, brought joy to everyone around them through their love of music and dancing. Delores remembers Leone Simcox sliding along the bench, playing, and getting so much

Incessant Dog Barking Our neighbor’s three dogs bark incessantly every time they are outside. The dogs are outside many times during the day, sometimes before 6:30am and even as late as 9:30pm or 10:00pm. We have complained to the neighbors more than once, but they claim they cannot hear the dogs barking. They say they have tried to curb the barking, but don’t want to curb the barking completely because then the dogs would not warn them if there was danger. Other neighbors have also complained and some have mentioned that they may move. We work from home much of the time and it is really hard to concentrate when the dogs are barking incessantly. It is impossible to have a quiet afternoon on our deck or walk our dog in the back yard. We have considered putting up a fence, but that would be quite expensive and likely would not stop the barking. Short of filing a formal complaint with law enforcement, what are we to do? Parking lot repairs Someone needs to do something but who is left to go to when management won’t fix things? A relative who has lived in a elderly apartment complex for years now with huge potholes, one way in and out, and 3/4 of it is horrendous. The sidewalks have been roped off for over a year, leaving occupants with wheelchairs or mobility carts in a dangerous position, unable to navigate it. Nothing has been fixed, other than stones tossed into the holes, which helped for just a few months. I encouraged them to call the housing authority or withhold rent until repairs are made; it is NOT safe. I can only imagine the damage being done to their vehicles. Anyone have other advice? Our seniors deserve better!
Awesome Coworkers I just want to publicly acknowledge what a blessing it is to have colleagues with whom we like to spend our days. Goodness knows, we spend a lot of time at work, so thank goodness for people who help us smile and see the good in life.
Loving our new sidewalks Thank you to all the Avon Village employees who worked hard to install the new sidewalks that extend to the end of North Avenue. Each and every day I see folks utilizing them for walking their pets, strolling their children, or getting in a good walk or run. Just a small thing that has improved the quality of living in this great small town.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Embrace relaxation methods. The APA recommends professionals coping with workplace stress embrace techniques that can effectively alleviate stress. Such techniques include meditation and deep-breathing exercises and can help workers develop their ability to focus purposefully on a single activity. That improved focus may help workers better navigate hectic working environments without succumbing to the stress such environments can produce.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.
