DID YOU KNOW? One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be some negative reaction to your tough stance when making a recent decision. But overall, your efforts result in well-earned recognition and all that can follow from that. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your financial situation seems confusing, even for the fiscally savvy Bovine. Maybe it’s the conflicting advice you’re getting. Check it out before things get too tangled to unknot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A relaxed attitude goes a long way in helping you deal with any of life’s irritants that might be popping up this week. You’re also a reassuring role model for others in the same situation. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect favors creativity, which should persuade you to work on your artistic projects. If time is a problem, prioritize your commitments so that your work isn’t compromised. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Scrutinize all the job offers that interest you. Most are honest and worth considering. But a few might not be completely forthcoming about what the job is and what the salary and benefits are. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected snafu could delay the completion of a project you’re eager to finish. Find out what’s causing it, fix it, and if you need help, don’t be shy about asking for it. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An idea that could be helpful to you comes from an unlikely source. Listen to it. Discuss it. If necessary, adjust it. If it looks as if it might work out quite well, go ahead and use it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about allowing someone to share a very personal secret with you. This could cause problems down the line with others who are involved in that person’s private life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A cooling down of a relationship could be the result of neglect, unintended or not. To save it from icing over, you need to warm it up with a large dose of hot Sagittarius passion. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good time to get involved with a number of family matters that involve money and other issues that might jeopardize the closeness between and among family members. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cheer up. That difficult person who appears to be deliberately stalling your project might just need to be reassured of the value she or he brings to it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Good news! Expect to feel re-energized now that you’ve gone through that stressful energydepleting period involving a lot of changes. Now, go out there and show them what you can do. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a warm, giving nature that inspires many to follow your example.

Make Flossing

Don’t Make It a “Chore” One way to discourage flossing is to make it a chore. We all know chores aren’t a child’s favorite thing to do.

Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Just like humans, pets need a combination of physical activity and caloric moderation to maintain healthy weights. Daily caloric needs for indoor cats range from 180 to 200 calories per day. The larger a dog is, the more calories it needs.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Elba Student Artwork Selected for Cover of the Rochester Auto Show By Maggie Fitzgibbon

F

anny Venegas is a junior at Elba Central Schools and a first-year student in the Graphic Arts Program at the Batavia Career and Technical Education Center. She recently submitted a design for the cover of the Rochester Automobile Dealers Association’s (RADA) Rochester Auto Show Program, and her design was selected as the winner. Fanny was recently recognized by Juan Canto, Director of Training, Compliance, Recruitment and Placement for the RADA, and she was presented with a monetary award. “Each year, the RADA invites students to design the program cover because it provides an excellent learning opportunity, allowing them to display their knowledge and skills that they learn in the Graphic Design classroom,” Canto said. “The student whose cover design is chosen gets to have their bio and picture included in the Auto Show book which thousands of people look at. This prestigious selection can be included in the student’s resumé as they look to attend college or find gainful employment.” Gretchen Rosales is the Principal of Elba Junior/Senior High School. She noted how Fanny goes above and beyond in all she accomplishes. “Fanny is a student who consistently goes above and beyond in all that she does. Not only does she participate in the Graphic Arts program at the Batavia CTE Center, but she also takes AP courses back at the Elba campus. She is a three-sport athlete, participating in cross country and indooroutdoor track,” Rosales said. “Fanny strives to always give more than 100 percent, and she exemplifies what it means to be an Elba Lancer.” Doug Russo is Fanny’s Graphic Arts Instructor. He described how Fanny’s skill set has grown immensely since she first began in September. “Fanny has gained a vast amount of experience in the graphic arts field. She is proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, which are highly sought after skills in the graphics industry,” Russo said. “She is detail orientated, gets along well with others and has great leadership skills.”

(l-r) Gretchen Rosales, Principal of Elba Junior/Senior High School; Sandra Salcido, Fanny’s mother; Fanny Venegas; Juan Canto, Director of Training, Compliance, Recruitment and Placement for the RADA; Doug Russo, Batavia CTE Center Graphic Arts Instructor; Maggie Poray, Batavia CTE Center Student Services Coordinator

Fanny’s Mom was present as Canto gave Fanny the award check. With a big smile, her Mom said, “I am so proud.” Fanny plans to pursue her education and become a photographer and videographer. The Rochester Auto Show is held each year in March at the Floreano Riverside Convention Center in Rochester, New York. The event, which draws tens of thousands of attendees, is sponsored by the Rochester Automobile Dealers Association and features current and future new vehicles in the market. The Batavia Career and Technical Education Center is a program of the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership. The Partnership operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services, offering shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben Counties in New York State. Fanny was surprised when she was informed that she was the winner. “I was shocked because so many of my classmates entered this contest. I’m so happy!” Fanny said.

Thank you to a good neighbor, Pete, who has been keeping my driveway workable this winter! Thanks to the people who plow the roads, the people who deliver the mail, daily paper & Penny Saver!

Tree lot owners beware, there is a local firewood “entrepreneur” who will clean up your tree lot after it has been logged. Make sure you go through and mark every tree to be culled (cut) before you let him cut. If you do not, he will cut up young prime log potential trees! FYI - Do not trust this local firewood entrepreneur!

In response to what about your son: It’s easy to try and shift the blame on the son, but let me tell you from experience, a woman, especially a wife, can pull a lot of weight in the household. I raised a very hardworking, respectful son, who loves us, his parents, very much. His wife caused so many problems between us that for a while, we didn’t see our son or GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Remember, my son has to live with his wife, and she made his life a living you know what, making accusatory comments about us, etc., So, you must look at the bigger picture before casting stones. My son finally came to visit so our grandchild could see us. They live out of town. He came without his wife. He tried to repair the situation the best he could.

I must respond to Attention Daughters-inlaw Rant with Attention Sisters-in-law. I was thrilled when I married my husband because I was getting a sister-in-law, I always wanted a sister. Turns out, it’s not so thrilling. She will stop at nothing to cause trouble, from spreading lies about

my husband and me to never including us in any holiday... ever! My husband and I have tried to rise above her ignorance by having them for holidays and birthdays, but it’s become too uncomfortable to keep having them over. She leaves our home, and she starts trouble again. I feel horrible about this. It’s amazing to us that with such a small family, everyone can’t just stop the nasty words and move forward. Life is too short. Everyone is in their 70’s. Let’s all just get along! Enough!

the corner and pulled in, and he laughed as he put his handicap sticker on his windshield. I looked at him like, “Are you really going to do this?” If he had manners, he would have seen that I don’t have a handicap sticker to hang up. I have permanent handicap plates. I am also a senior citizen but with manners, so I didn’t say anything. If they would have watched, they would have seen that I must use a cane or walker to get around or grab a cart if one is close by. I have had two major back surgeries and 18 shots so far in my back. I was hurt by the lack of manners people have nowadays. I hope they had a good shopping day and can live with being meanmannered seniors.

HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month. • Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them. • Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them. • Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. • Keep portable generators outside and away from the home. • Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home.

2/29/20

• Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year. • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source. • Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets. • If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry. Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members. “The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. Learn more and find a volunteer fire service opportunity by going to www.MakeMeAFirefighter.org.

Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

Snack Foods That Promote Better Sleep • Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier. • Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.

If You’re Feeling Down, You’re Not Alone. It’s That Time of Year

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

(NAPS)—You may have heard the terms—winter blues, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern. No matter what you call it, with approximately 17.3 million adults in the U.S. experiencing seasonal depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, feeling gloomy this time of year isn’t uncommon—but it can be overcome.

* On Feb. 21, 1970, national security adviser Henry Kissinger begins secret peace talks with North Vietnamese representative Le Duc Tho at a villa outside Paris. The North Vietnamese were demanding an unconditional U.S. withdrawal on a fixed date.

The Problem - Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern (formerly called SAD) can affect anyone of any age. While January and February are the typical peak months for the disorder, symptoms can persist through April, according to Mental Health America.

* On Feb. 20, 1998, American Tara Lipinski wins the gold medal in women’s figure skating at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, becoming the sport’s youngest gold medalist at age 15. * On Feb. 23, 1958, Formula One champion Juan Manuel Fangio of Argentina is kidnapped in Cuba by a group of Fidel Castro’s rebels. Fangio was taken from his Havana hotel the day before the Cuba Grand Prix and was released unharmed after the race ended.

Doctor’s Advice - When that feeling of sadness persists for several weeks, it’s time to take action, according to Dr. Desreen Dudley, a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Behavioral Health Provider of Therapeutic Services for Teladoc Health. “If someone has a few days of feeling low, that’s normal and typically nothing to worry about. It’s when the feeling lingers for weeks and people lose interest in daily activities and suffer persistent negative thoughts, that lend a stronger basis for Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Affective Pattern diagnosis,” she says. What To Watch For - Other symptoms she warns about are: • Change in appetite • Change in sleep pattern • Decreased energy • Decreased concentration • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt • An inability to think, concentrate, or finish tasks at work or school • Thinking about suicide, self-harm, or death Dr. Dudley contends individuals already struggling with depressive disorders are susceptible to SAD patterns. For older Americans, a Vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate low moods. On the other end of the spectrum, she has worked with newly independent college students who find SAD a heavy burden and say their new responsibilities of classes, exams and jobs can compound their depression. For some, they may be sleeping in more and further limiting their exposure to sunlight. What To Do - In addition to considering therapy, such as virtual care, which is available on your terms and from any location you choose, Dr. Dudley recommends: • Avoiding or cutting back on alcohol and other addictive substances • Eating healthfully—more lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and eliminating sugar • Daily exercise at least 30 minute a day (walking counts) • Yoga or meditation • Learning about and trying light therapy • Regularly surrounding yourself with those you enjoy being around. When To Seek Help - According to a recent global study conducted by Ipsos MORI for Teladoc Health, individuals often recognize when they’re struggling, but even so, over a third of the respondents who have had one mental health episode admitted to not seeking professional help. The reason? For many, it’s often the difficulty in finding mental health care. “Thankfully, virtual care is becoming increasingly available as a source of convenient mental health care,” Dr. Dudley says. “It eliminates the traditional obstacles of in-person visits and has opened up access for anyone with a busy schedule, individuals who may have difficulty getting out of the house and students who may fear the stigma of walking into the campus mental health clinic.”

A poem about saying goodbye to your four-legged friend

GRYFFIN That border collie stare, peering into my soul, crossing the lines of communication where no words are necessary-how well you knew me, tolerated me, like a besotted lover but ever more faithful. Over the years, as the house emptied, we formed an alliance you and I syncing our gaits, comfortable in our routine. We watched each other’s hair turn gray, more amused than alarmed, each night holding the inevitable at bay with our playtime antics: hide and go seek (you never did learn to check the front coat closet) and running the inside track in the living room-catch me if you can! --an amusing sight, I’m sure, for anyone passing by the picture window. Immortal youngsters we, puppies at heart, until that Monday morning when you and my world suddenly collapsed.

At the vets, you lay quietly, obediently, still the gentleman you always were, chin resting heavily on white paws (four, like socks), a tired sphinx awaiting the quick needle prick-too quick!-me, caressing and crooning, tears flowing, your betrayer, Judas with a kiss. Four quick huffs, your familiar warm breath gracing my hand, then nothing. I wait, unsure. Those eyes--still liquid, still warm, still lingering on my face. Border collie stare, piercing my soul. Did you know? DID YOU KNOW? That I did it for love?

Cancer Treatments Kill Not Cure, Friends Say ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a relative with cancer who is about to

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

begin multiple therapeutic interventions. My friends tell me that all cancer treatments are toxic and kill people instead of curing them, and that I should tell my relative to look into other forms of treatment. What do you suggest I do? -- K.C. ANSWER: There are hundreds of different types of cancer, and they vary widely in their capacity to grow and damage the individual, and in their response to treatment. For decades, this has meant mostly surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but now includes newer treatments, including immune therapy. While not all cancers are curable in everybody, every year brings sometimes incremental, sometimes dramatic improvements in life expectancy for individual cancers. Some cancers that were rapidly fatal even a few years ago are now curable in most cases. Getting the right diagnosis quickly and getting to an expert in treating that cancer are critical to having the best chance of a good outcome. Treating some cancers remains difficult, and in many cases the treatments have significant side effects. Surgery scars may impair function, and chemotherapy can cause severe symptoms and may permanently affect body systems, as can radiation. It can be very hard on a family member observing these treatments, and if his or her loved one nevertheless succumbs eventually to the cancer, it is understandable to think the suffering the person went through was in vain. So, while I understand where your friends may be coming from, their well-meaning advice, based on bad experiences possibly a long time ago, might cause your relative with cancer to delay the potentially lifesaving treatments that are available now. A study published in July 2018 showed that people who use alternative medical treatments for cancer are less likely to be cured and have a shorter life expectancy. My advice is that you encourage your relative to find the most expert cancer treatment available. It’s up to your relative to accept the recommendations of the expert, but delaying the best available treatment in order to consider unproven therapies is likely to result in harm. ***

understand why buttermilk coffee creamer seems to get outdated faster than regular creamer. Does the butter in it have anything to do with this? -- C.H. ANSWER: Buttermilk doesn’t have butter in it. It was so named because it was originally made with what was left after separating butter from the unhomogenized cream that had been allowed to ferment with airborne bacteria, making it slightly acidic. Modern cultured buttermilk is made from pasteurized, homogenized milk, usually 1% to 2% fat, and inoculated with healthy bacteria, which makes lactic acid from the sugars in the milk. This acid makes buttermilk resistant to the unhealthy bacteria that causes spoilage. It also causes a slight sour taste, which some people like and others don’t. Commercial heavy cream, and coffee creamers made from heavy cream, have a very long shelf life largely because they are pasteurized at ultra-high temperatures, so they last even longer than buttermilk. The high fat content also retards bacteria growth. Both buttermilk-based and cream-based creamers will stay good longer than their expiration date. Your nose is very good for telling when it has gone bad. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Strains impact a muscle or a tendon, which connects muscles to bones. Clinical research has linked acute strains and sprains to improper warm-up before sports, fatigue and previous injuries. Preparticipation conditioning and stretching can help reduce the risk of injury.

We Care About ut

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

IF CAVEMEN DIDN’T BRUSH, WHY DO WE? If the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians were the first to brush their teeth, how did preceding generations manage to go without doing so? Well, to begin with, our oldest ancestors didn’t consume processed foods. Instead, they ate natural, nutrient-rich, fibrous foods that helped keep their teeth clean, strong, and resistant to cavities and oral infections. By contrast, not only do many of us eat processed, sugary foods and drink highly acidic beverages, but some people also smoke, which has been linked to oral cancer. Modern men and women also tend to live about three times longer (or more) than our early counterparts. With all this in mind, we must do all we can to preserve our teeth.

as part of your daily routine, and continue with regular checkups and cleanings at our dental office. We strive to make you feel at home when you visit our practice at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we combine the latest dental technology with a friendly and relaxing environment. Catapult your dental health care into the 22nd century by calling BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246.

P.S. Because our ancestors were generally more active than we, they burned the calories that they consumed and tended to avoid routines that can lead to acid reflux and consequent tooth demineralization.

All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

CBD: THE WISDOM OF THE PLANT “I have experienced back pain for 4 years, receiving injec ons and working with a physical therapist with minimal relief. A er using this salve for a week I am pain free and can enjoy going for a walk again.” - Carol M. In 2017 Chris VanDusen and Shelly Wolanske founded Empire Hemp Co. to cra the finest, all-natural Hemp CBD Oil and CBD topicals to share the restora ve effects of hemp with those in need. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoac ve and non-habit-forming compound that occurs naturally in the flowers of the hemp plant. Unlike marijuana, which contains high levels of THC, hemp flower does not have any intoxica ng effects and does not produce a “high.” Hemp flower contains more than 100 unique compounds, known as cannabinoids, that interact with the body’s own endocannabinoid system. Cannabinoids are effec ve because most of the body’s internal systems (the brain and central nervous system, the reproduc ve system, the immune system, the gut, the muscles, and even the bones) all produce natural endocannabinoids, and respond to the cannabinoids present in hemp flower. Empire Hemp Co. uses only the highest quality, locallyGENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

grown, pes cide-free hemp flowers, grown in the sun by our farming partners in Genesee, Orleans and Erie Coun es. We treat the flower with the utmost care, using a state-of-the-art supercri cal CO2 extractor to preserve these beneficial compounds in as clean and pure a form as possible. We then blend the extracted CBD oil in with the finest natural and botanical ingredients to create nctures and salves of the highest quality. All Empire Hemp Co. products are third-party tested to guarantee their strength and safety. 34 SWAN STREET, Our Hemp CBD Oils are available in three strengths: SUITE 4 600mg, 1200mg, and 1800mg in both raw and mint flavor. THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

(585) 689-3486 for more information DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Stop multitasking. Psychologists have determined that multitasking can bog down productivity. According to the American Psychological Association, the mind and brain were not designed for heavy-duty multitasking. Individuals think they’re getting more done, but they may not be handling tasks effectively. Instead, focus on one job at a time and only move on once it is completed.
