HINTS TO HELP YOU PROTECT YOUR KIDS IN THE CAR (NAPSI)—Keeping your kids on the road to safety when in and around a car can be easier if you take these steps: What You Can Do First, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), you should look for a car with these vehicle safety features: • Rear-view cameras • Interior trunk release • Side-impact air bags • Advanced frontal air bags • Push-down/pull-up window switches

Next, the NHTSA says, you should always remember to: 1. Use a car seat for every trip—even when you’re just going down the street. Select the car seat based on your child’s age and size, and always follow the manufacturer’s directions. Make sure it’s compatible with your vehicle by checking the car seat manufacturer’s instructions. 2. Keep kids in the backseat at least through age 12. 3. Tell children not to play around vehicles. Before getting into a vehicle, check around and behind it, as well as the surrounding area, to ensure no children are present. 4. Buckle and lock any unused seat belts to keep kids from getting tangled up in them. 5. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, no matter how short the stop, or what the weather is, even if the windows are cracked. The car can heat up very quickly in almost all weather conditions. Even with moderate outside temperatures in the mid-60s, a vehicle’s interior can quickly heat up to more than 110° F. In addition, if the ignition is on or the keys are in the ignition, children can accidentally cause the vehicle to roll or even drive away. What Can Help To prevent precious cargo from being left in cars, one company has come up with an ingenious Rear Door Alert (RDA) technology. An industry first, the system was developed by two mothers who are also engineers at Nissan. It monitors when the rear door is opened and closed before and after the vehicle is in motion. The system responds with a series of notifications if a rear door was used prior to a trip but was not reopened after the trip. Once the vehicle is in park and the ignition is turned off, the system will first display a notification in the instrument panel and progresses to distinctive chirps of the horn to remind drivers to check the backseat. Nissan’s RDA is easy to configure and can be temporarily or permanently turned off through a menu in the cluster display. Already available in the Nissan Pathfinder, for model year 2019, RDA will be standard equipment on eight other Nissan cars, including the best-selling Rogue and the all-new Altima. By model year 2022, it will be standard on all the company’s four-door trucks, sedans and SUVs. Learn More: For further information, go to www.NissanUSA.com and www.NHTSA.gov. Page 8

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well. Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset. A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.

AUTO SECTION

Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Disappointed about something that didn’t go your way? Cheer up. Look at the reasons it happened, and you could find a valuable lesson about what to do (or not do!) the next time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to do some reassessing of plans and goals -even how you considered redoing your bathroom. The point is to be open to change if change can improve things. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take some time to learn who is the right person (or persons) to approach and discuss your ideas with for your new project. Also, reserve time to prepare for an upcoming family event. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a demanding situation, as you recently did, could drain much of your own emotional reserves. Take time to relax and indulge yourself in some well-earned pampering. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The regal Lion might feel that she or he is above emotional displays. But showing your feelings can be both liberating for you and reassuring for someone who has been waiting for you to do so. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An emotionally needy person might make more demands than you can cope with. Best to ask for some breathing space NOW, before resentment sets in and makes communication difficult. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unexpected spate of mixed signals could cause serious schedule setbacks. Best to focus on straightening everything out as soon as possible and get everyone back on track. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be aware that someone in the workplace could try to use a disagreement with a colleague against you. If so, be prepared to offer your side of the story with the facts to back you up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected challenge to a previous decision can be unsettling. But your reservoir of self-confidence -- plus your loyal supporters -- should help carry the day for you. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While the idea of making some sort of major move in the near future continues to interest you, don’t overlook a new possibility that could be emerging closer to home. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful not to base an upcoming decision on gossip or anything you might hear if it can’t meet provable standards. That’s true regardless of whom the source might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to do some solid reassessing early in the week before you can close that sensitive situation. A new job-related opportunity could present itself later in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: You are extraordinarily sensitive to people’s feelings, and you’re always ready to offer comfort if necessary.

Batavia Ophthalmology TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

New Option to Treat Enlarged Prostate ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year old male who is healthy with

Dr. Peter Paulus, Dr. Eric Wu Providing our community with excellent and compassionate medical, surgical and eye care.

Batavia Ophthalmology 229 Summit St. • Suite 9 Batavia, NY 14020 • 585-344-0933

a very active life, both physical and sexual. Like many men my age, I have an enlarged prostate that my doctor monitors during annual visits. It doesn’t impair my life, with the small exception of being annoying (waking up nightly to a weak or slow urinating stream), and it doesn’t bother me too much during the day, except once in a while when I have to urinate a little more than usual. Every now and then I’ll try an over-the-counter prostate supplement, but they never work. I will NOT go for a surgery because it’s not really necessary. I just read about a new revolutionary treatment option called a prostatic lift device, which is supposed to “lift and remove the prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra (the passageway that the urine flows through).” It says, “Tiny implants are placed to hold the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain, leaving an unobstructed pathway for urine to flow normally again.” They go on to say that treatment typically takes under an hour, preserves sexual function, doesn’t require cutting, heating or removal of tissue. Compared with other BPH surgeries, this system is supposed to have a strong safety profile with minimal side effects. Have you ever heard of this? Do you think it’s safe? It sounds great. However, the thought of tiny implants being placed inside of me and staying there scares me. -- V.A. ANSWER: The prostatic urethral lift procedure is yet another option for men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The procedure does involve the placement of small implants. The procedure is said to be easy to perform (easy for a urologist, that is), and improves quality of life and measures of urinary flow. In a study of 206 men, none developed sexual troubles after the procedure. It has significant benefits over traditional surgery: Recovery is faster and has less risk of sexual side effects, but traditional surgery improved urinary flow and complete bladder drainage more than the urethral lift procedure. Also, 14% of men who had the lift procedure needed the traditional surgery within five years. The implants seem to be safe and do not affect the ability to do surgery if necessary. I wouldn’t recommend this procedure nor a surgical procedure -- or even an alternative procedure like laser, microwave, plasma vaporization or water vapor ablation -- without a trial of prescription medication first. Most men do very well with an alpha blocker like tamsulosin (Flomax), a dihydrotestosterone blocker like dutasteride (Avodart), or a combination of the two. I’m not sure you have tried that. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Simple question: Why can’t I hear well when I am having a big yawn? Is this normal? -- J.C.A. ANSWER: This is normal; in fact, it’s a universal finding with a yawn that hearing decreases (but doesn’t go away entirely). This is because the Eustachian tube closes, and there is a pressure difference inside versus the outside of the eardrum, reducing the ability of the ear to transmit sound. Interestingly, after a big yawn, hearing may be improved; when the Eustachian tube reopens after the jaw position changes, it can equalize the pressure and improve sound transmission. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SMASHMOUT SPORTS “Smashmouth” is a slang term used describe a rough, aggressive style of athletic play. This casual talk is well and good, but when it comes to action, athletes had better wear mouth guards to help prevent contact-related dental injuries. Unfortunately, some athletes are reluctant to do so. According to one study, many college athletes said that they disliked mouth guards, because of poor retention and breathing and speech impairment. However, these problems were largely traced to the use of ìboil-and-biteî mouth guards. These inexpensive over-the-counter mouth guards are first boiled and, then, while warm and soft, placed in the mouth to mold to the bite. The custom mouth guards available from dentists are far more comfortable and functional.

charge of their dental health and do what is necessary to prevent, arrest, or control their own dental conditions. Weíll work together as a team with you to achieve the long-term benefits that quality dentistry affords. From sound advice about mouth guards to routine well visits to major dental reconstructions, weíve got your dental needs covered. Our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. Wearing a protective mouth guard significantly reduces the incidence of a concussion by a blow to the jaw, because the condyle (the protrusion of bone at the jaw joint) is separated from the base of the skull, with the mandible placed in a forward position.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 8, 1986, "Mask," starring Eric Stoltz and Cher, opens. Cher, who had launched a serious acting career with her appearance in Robert Altman's "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" in 1982, received the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in "Mask." On March 17, 1834, Gottlieb Daimleris is born in Germany. In 1885, he and Wilhelm Maybach developed a new version of the four-stroke internal-combustion engine, which they attached to a wooden bicycle, creating the world’s first motorcycle. On March 16, 1903, Roy Bean, the self-proclaimed “law west of the Pecos,” dies in Langtry, Texas. Bean’s claim to fame rested on his often humorous and sometimes-bizarre rulings as a justice of the peace in western Texas during the late 19th century.

Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy

You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs: • Before, during, and after preparing food • Before eating food • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick • Before and after treating a cut or wound • After using the toilet • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste • After handling pet food or pet treats • After touching garbage

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

Follow these five steps every time. • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Why? Read the science behind the recommendations.

Use Hand Sanitizer When You Can’t Use Soap and Water You can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

St. Patrick’s Day Tradition! What started as a way to get to the bottom of Chicago’s pollution problem, the pouring of a special green dye into the river allowed authorities to see exactly where waste dumping was occurring. This prompted the idea to make it an annual event, turning the river green for St. Patrick’s Day. That dye is now an eco-friendly vegetablebased dye. You have to be quick to view because it lasts just 5 hours!

Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Celebrating Irish Heritage for Over 40 Years! BY AMANDA DUDEK

O

n St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, almost everyone is a little more Irish, at least in spirit. Bringing some Irish luck to the Greater Rochester area is the popular, family-friendly Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York State, second only to the one in NYC. It is the single largest one-day event in the City of Rochester. The parade’s history is rich, and Tops’ relationship with it begins over Irish soda bread and friendship. Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade President, Chris Shalvoy, shared with us the history of the parade. “Rochester’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is celebrating its 43rd year, but the parade has been going on for a lot longer,” he said. “We have traced the parade back to the 1850’s when many people were emigrating from Ireland due to famine and political and religious oppression, and the Irish were often shunned.” Over time, however, the parade became a mainstream event. “In Ireland, it is a day for religious observance. In the United States, the parade took on a much bigger role as Irish immigrants celebrated their newfound freedom to openly practice their Catholic faith and Irish traditions without fear,” Shalvoy explained. Today, the Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade often draws as many as 60,000 guests when the weather is inclement but has drawn over 120,000 when it’s fair. Shamrock luck certainly must have been involved when Tops became the parade’s headline sponsor years ago. “Dave and Cindy Hook, both of whom work for Tops, moved back to the small community I grew up in and still live in today,” Shalvoy began. “My son mentioned the last name (Hook) of a new boy in his class, and I thought his father must be related to a family I knew growing up.” Dave Hook did grow up with Shalvoy and even had Shalvoy’s mother as his English teacher. Shalvoy’s wife, Gayle, belonged to the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish Catholic organization, as its president, which she still is today. They raised funds selling Irish soda bread. When they lost their provider, the Hooks suggested that Tops could help. Tops agreed, and the organization sold this bread at the Rochester Irish Festival that year. At that time, Chris Shalvoy was on the festival’s board and on the parade’s board. “Tops enjoyed the Rochester Irish Festival very much,” shared Shalvoy. “When our parade lost its primary sponsor, Tops graciously stepped in as its headline sponsor.” Shalvoy described Tops as continuing to be a wonderful partner, explaining that working with them is a privilege. “Tops is very particular when selecting partners,” he explained. “The company is very family- oriented. They feel this parade is somewhere they can showcase their product without having to worry about being embarrassed.” A representative from Tops has faithfully attended the parade’s monthly meetings, and Tops has provided parade advertising, food and beverages for the workers and “really gone all out,” according to Shavoy. “It is a wonderful partnership,” he added. One of the parade’s most well-known precursors, the Irish Night Amerks game, is held the Friday night before the parade. The Amerks wear Irish-themed jerseys which are later auctioned off. Funds raised

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

by the event and auction benefit the St. Patrick’s Day Committee, supporting the privately funded parade. “The Amerks are a tremendous sponsor of the parade, and their Irish Night hockey game is something many people look forward to,” said Shalvoy. “If we play an American team, we sing the Irish National Anthem in Gaelic. That means a lot to me.” This year, Don Stevens, the announcer for the Amerks, is the parade’s Sportsperson of the Year, as well. Medal of Honor recipient and Batavia Veteran, David Bellavia, will be the parade’s Grand Marshal, and 96-year-old Veteran, Peter DuPre will be its Honorary Marshal. Other honorees include Marianne Tucker, Compeer, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mike McKeon and Patrick Michael Murphy. Honorees in memoriam include Eamon McCormack, Helen Doherty, Bill Kehoe, Jo Carroll and Joe Dady. The parade will feature over 3,000 marchers and 100 entries, including 15 marching bands and 7 Irish dance schools. The Celtic Family Faire will also be at the parade from 11am-4pm at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn on East Main Street and will offer such highlights as In Jest (comedy), a photo booth, games, Irish storytelling, c u p c a k e decorating and hot cocoa all for the price of a donation to Daystar Kids. “The parade is like a Barnum and Bailey Circus that walks right down the street,” Shalvoy stated. “Smiling little kids all have shamrocks on their heads; it doesn’t matter who they are or where they’re from. For those 2-3 hours, the parade brings joy to them, and they get that escape.” The Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 12:30pm. The parade will be televised live on Spectrum TV. For more information, visit www.rochesterparade.com. Enjoy this article? Some friends and I enjoyed a wonderful tea on Valentine’s Day at the Country Mouse Tea House in Mt. Morris. Everything was so good; we’ll be back! Thanks again.

of waiting in line for the automatic knowing how long the lines would probably be, I opted to do a quick manual wash. I pulled around into line; all three bays had a person but no one in line waiting. I hung back to go into next available spot. I realized the person ahead of me was taking longer because he was teaching his daughter how to wash and use the wand. I finally got to pull in, and right before he left, he deposited more quarters! How generous and thoughtful! I didn’t mind waiting, but that made my day!

Wanting to wash my car of the salt, I headed to the local car wash. Instead

Now, they are owned by banks that are in no hurry to repair them and get them back on the tax rolls. These are the same banks I’m sure that gave them the loans in the first place. They don’t follow the rules. He has a lot to learn about driving if he lives to see his 60’s. His passenger never said a word. I was already dealing with my eldest yelling and screaming at me. I’m hoping this spring I’ll never have to see that traffic circle again.

I had an accident in February. The driver was a teenage driver; all he did was yell and scream and threaten me. In my 40+ years of driving, this is the first time this has happened. I was taught in driver education to remain

To the person who Said “Yeah, we know you have the right of way:” Do you really? I don’t think so. I think that you have the idea that no matter the circumstances, you have the right of way. Sorry, wrong! In the

instance you described, you are wrong. You have no “right” to move into the oncoming lane of traffic as long as there are vehicles in that lane. No matter what, you do not have that right. Other drivers are not required to move over for you just because you have something blocking your lane. I am positive that any judge would tell you the same. As for the police, they never pass in the opposite lane unless they have their lights on indicating an emergency, in which case the law says drivers are required to move to the shoulder to let them pass. You are not the police. You do not have that right to require drivers to move over.

After he left, a man behind me said, “See? There are good people in this world.” Thank you again, Cole! On Friday, February 28th, I was at the Crosby’s gas station in Brockport. I was trying to purchase a gas gift card for my grandson. When I was told that they do not accept Credit Cards or Checks, I was extremely upset because I didn’t have enough cash and I had traveled a distance to get the card. I wasn’t sure what

round hay bale, much enjoyed! I called local jewelers because a stone in my ring was loose. Lambert Jewelers gave the lowest quote. I went in the next day and received fantastic customer service and was amazed when they fixed my ring on the spot. I asked how much I owed and was shocked when he said not to worry about it since it took two minutes to fix. I definitely will be recommending them to friends and family. Thank you!

I really agree with getting rid of plastic bags. What I don’t understand is why grocery stores do not train their employees on how to pack the reusable bags. On five separate trips to the store to do my shopping, I have had to ask the cashier to please keep my meat separate from my cleaning products. Is this not common sense? I have come home with my frozen foods on top of my sliced bread and ice cream with my bar soap. Also, why am I given such a hard time when I ask for a freezer bag for certain items? I spend a lot of money every week on food and firmly believe I keep my grocery store in business. Please train your employees to pack grocery bags!

People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.
