Begin Again Horse Rescue Microchip Pilot Program

Automotive ____________________15

BY CHRISTINA M. ECKLUND Begin Again Horse Rescue (BAHR), of Lima New York, is pleased to announce that it has received a generous grant from the Kenneth A Scott Charitable Trust. This grant will allow the organization to run a pilot project to microchip all the equine in its program during 2021. In its 11 years dedicated to local equine rescue, BAHR has placed more than 270 of them and helped hundreds more to find safe haven in permanent homes. If the project proves successful, the rescue hopes to expand the program to include local community equine next year. For the first year of the pilot project, BAHR has obtained 200 microchips and two chip readers from Pet Link Inc. Included in the grant is a twenty-dollar honorarium for each equine earmarked to pay for veterinary implantation. It is hoped that all adopters and fostered caregivers will agree to take part in the new program during spring vaccine veterinary visits, so there should be no additional charges to the adopters for this service. “I am so thankful to the Kenneth A Scott Charitable Trust”, said Harriett Rubins, BAHRís Executive Director. “It makes possible one more level of safety-net to safeguard these equines that have had such bad experiences. We never want them to suffer again.” Additionally, Begin Again Horse Rescue is working to educate its surrounding equine communities to the benefits of microchipping. Microchipping affords an animal a permanent identification that cannot be separated or altered. The chips, painlessly embedded beneath the skin on the left side of the neck, are the size of a grain of rice and take seconds to implant. The chip numbers are registered with Pet Link online data base. They help prevent theft, aid identification and recovery during disasters, provide a mobile link to online health certificates and medical records, and they provide correct identification of equine at competitions to prevent fraud. Other benefits include traceability in disease outbreak scenarios, and they allow for rapid and efficient management of investigations into diseases or to missing animals. Most veterinarians have the chip readers. Begin Again Horse Rescue now has two, which we will use to help others identify their horses.

It is through the generosity of volunteers, donations and grants that BAHR can support regional equine in need. Neighbor Lets His Dog Poop in My Yard DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor constantly lets his dog come into my yard and do his business. Sometimes the dog is off leash, and other times he is on the leash while the neighbor just stands there. I’m tired of picking up after this dog! What can I do? Should I go out and squirt the dog in the face with water? -- Frustrated in White Plains, New York DEAR FRUSTRATED: This isn’t the dog’s fault at all -- it’s the fault of the owner for allowing his dog into your yard. Squirting the dog in the face (or the owner) will not help things and will only escalate the situation. The next time the owner comes by, talk to him -- calmly -- and ask him not to let the dog poop in your yard, to keep the dog on a leash, and to pick up after the dog. Explain that keeping him on a leash keeps the dog safe. If the neighbor keeps letting the dog into your yard, or if you don’t feel safe talking to this person, then contact the city. White Plains, like many municipalities in the U.S., has a leash law and imposes fines on owners who don’t keep their dog on a leash, who don’t pick up after their dog, or who allow their pet to go onto someone else’s property without permission. And please, whatever you do, don’t take this out on the dog. Pets are unaware of boundaries unless they’re trained to stay away from certain areas. They don’t realize they’re doing something wrong, especially if the owner is not correcting them. It’s up to the owner to control his dog while outside. GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill. Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes Serves 3 or 4 1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve. For more recipes, nutritional information and tips for cooking with California sweetpotatoes, go to www.casweetpotatoes.com.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Shaving cream can be used as a spot remover for many carpets. Use only a small amount, and follow up with a damp cloth.” -- D.L. in New Brunswick, Canada * Here’s a great rule of thumb in the kitchen: The quicker it cooks, the more direct the heat. So, for a thin piece of steak that’ll cook quickly, a cast-iron pan fry will do nicely. For a thicker cut of, say, chicken, you should bake at a lower temp for a longer time. * To rid a shirt of a deodorant stain, sponge plain white vinegar onto the residue and rub briskly. * “Need sliced mushrooms for your salad or recipe? They are hard to cut, but you might already have the perfect tool for the job in your kitchen. If you have an egg slicer, get it out. It works very well for mushrooms, and it’s easier to use than trying to cut those slices yourself.” -- J.R. in Utah * Got an ink stain? Try using the ubiquitous nowadays (thankfully) hand sanitizer! Apply a little sanitizer to the ink stain, then use a clean, dry white rag to blot, checking the rag often and moving to a different spot on the rag as it takes up the ink. * To get clothing really clean, don’t overfill your washer. Oftentimes, we want to get the laundry done quickly by stuffing in as much as possible, thereby reducing the number of loads. But if there isn’t enough space for everything to move about, it can actually keep the clothing from getting clean. Never fill more than three-fourths full. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

Grateful To the person(s) who paid for my lunch at Canal View Restaurant in Newark on Wednesday, March 4, about 11:00am, thank you! It was very thoughtful and much appreciated, and the lunch was delicious A grateful customer Thank you! While traveling up Rochester Street in Avon, I wasn’t paying attention to my speed.... which I believe was increasing. An Avon police officer was sitting along the street, and upon noticing me, he flashed his lights as a warning. This was much appreciated as I wasn’t way over the speed limit, and driving a minivan, I wasn’t exactly racing! Thank you for the warning as I believe it’s a great way to slow traffic without giving a ticket. Very professional!

Local COVID clinic I took my mom to the Rochester Regional Health Covid mass vaccination site, a drive thru clinic, at Unity Hospital on Long Pond Rd., Gates/ Greece. It was very well organized, and the nursing staff, which they all were, were very friendly and explained the procedure and the necessary paperwork very well. They set up garage-like pole barns to drive in, and you didn't even need to get out of the car, which is excellent for those with mobility issues. The vaccines were well protected to keep them fresh. It took a total of 30 minutes from the time we got there to the time we left, and that includes the time they had us wait after the shot was given to make sure no negative reaction occurred. This should be the example to use for all future mass vaccination sites. We go back in 3 weeks.

Let it go? I wish I could say your rant surprised me. But it was expected. Do you also make the same demands of your fellow Americans when they leave holiday decorations up on their personal property once the holiday is past? The level of control you yearn for is available...just in other countries. Keep hope alive though; [the government] is working diligently to procure the level of personal control you desire. Campaign flags A flag that says 'Vote 2020" with a name is not just a flag. Those flags are 'campaign' flags and are supposed to have been removed within 7 days of said election. Trump lost. Cut out the 'vote 2020' and keep your flag flying; otherwise, remove the flag! Election people should be asking for removal of said flags after almost 4 months. There is as difference!

Tired teacher To the reader who wrote, "There is no way teachers are doing their full jobs when schools are barely open" - you are wrong! Teachers are working harder than ever. Many teachers have students in front of us and students virtually at the same time! On the occasions when all students can't be taught at the same time, we are pre-recording lessons for those at home to view independently and then teaching it to the students in the classroom. In classes such as science, teachers are having students at home do one thing and students in the classroom do something hands-on and then flipping the work when the kids flip later in the week. Then there are some kids that attend 4 days a week, so that is another thing to manage. Until you have been in our shoes, don't you dare say, "teacher vacation."

Water can help people maintain healthy weights. Dieting fads come and go, but water is a mainstay for people who want to control their caloric intake in an effort to maintain healthy weights. Water has zero calories, so reaching for a bottle or glass of water instead of a soda, lemonade or another caloric beverage can help people keep the pounds off. A study from researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center found that even diet soda enhances weight gain by as much as 41 percent. In addition, soda has been linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. No such association exists with water.

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

(NAPSI)—Caregiving for a loved one can be a fulfilling, yet overwhelming experience. Forty million Americans provide care for their aging loved one each year, and spend an average of 24.4 hours per week doing so. Try as one may to create a balanced lifestyle, it’s a role that easily crowds out other important areas of life, including personal and professional relationships, and generates high levels of stress that could lead to serious health problems long-term if not managed. Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control: Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class. Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself. Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus your attention on the key moments that matter most with your loved ones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey.

INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE AIR FILTERS Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air filter. Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indicator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced. AUTOMOTIVE

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

My name is Kitten and I turned 6 years old in March. For my birthday last year my mom and dad got me a little brother, toys, and gourmet cat food. Although I loved the toys and food, I am not enjoying my crazy little brother Elmo. He likes to copy everything I do, chases me to play, and cuddles me when I’m sleeping. I love to watch the birds on my perch every morning and my little brother sometimes steals my spot before I get there. I know one day when he is a little older and calmer, we will be the best of friends. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Seniors Raising Grandchildren For many seniors, retirement plans can change instantly when it becomes apparent that they’ll need to raise their grandchildren. The reasons this can happen are many, and none of them good: parental drug use, arrest and incarceration, a dangerous military assignment, alcoholism and even death of the parents. The potential complications can be immediate: You have no extra room because you downsized, you’re in a strict 55-plus seniors community, you’re on a very limited Social Security budget, your health isn’t great ... and so much more. If you’re a senior who’s now in this position, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 3 million children are being raised by grandparents. But help is available. Start with the Child Welfare Information Gateway (www.childwelfare. gov) and scroll to your state. Ask about Medicaid for Children, SNAP benefits, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and Supplemental Security Income for children. Raising Your Grandchildren (www.raisingyourgrandchildren.com) has a wealth of information. State Resources, for example, will take you to social workers, support groups and programs in your state. The legal aspect of raising your grandchildren can’t be ignored because it will impact all parts of your life. What you’re providing is called Kinship Care. Be sure you understand the differences between Formal, Informal, Temporary and Voluntary. Formal Kinship Care, for example, means the state has legal custody of the child but he lives with you. State laws vary, and you’ll have caseworkers, court appointments and more. Informal Kinship Care, on the other hand, leaves the courts and caseworkers out of your lives, but legal custody remains with the parents. That can be a problem when it comes to getting the child medical care and enrolling them in school. The only financial assistance you might be eligible for is TANF. Raising grandchildren is not easy. Get all the help and support you can.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.
