HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Determine the charging time of your vehicle. The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs,and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV,confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

Clicker Training Can Help Your Dog Love to Learn

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the value of training dogs using a clicker? I have tried using a clicker to train my dog Atlas, but he didn’t listen very well. When should I click at him -- when he’s misbehaving? Or when he’s doing something right? And how can he tell? -- John

DEAR JOHN: Clicker training, or “mark and reward” training, can seem almost magical in terms of how quickly and enthusiastically a dog learns. But that magic only happens when it’s being done correctly.

Basically, you press the clicker device when your dog does precisely the thing that you are trying to train him to do. And you follow up immediately (like, within a second) with a reward -- usually a little bit of a treat. So, here’s how it is done:

-- Decide on one behavior that you want your dog to learn in your training session. Start with a basic behavior, like “sit,” “come here,” “lie down” or “give paw.”

-- Give Atlas the command. If he doesn’t follow the command, don’t click.

-- As soon as he follows the command, click once and give him a little treat.

-- Repeat the process again and again until he follows the command immediately.

By associating the clicker noise with a command and a reward, Atlas will quickly build a positive association with the command. is works for many types of training, from basic obedience to agility to job-speci c commands. But you start with just one command at a time.

Also, consider working with a trainer, either one on one or in a group training setting. You’ll pick up many training skills quickly. It’s worth the investment.

President Joe Biden’s initiative, aimed at providing targeted debt relief to millions of student-loan borrowers, is now before the Supreme Court. Opponents to the program say it amounts to an unlawful attempt to erase an estimated $430 billion of federal student loan debt under the guise of the pandemic. What side do you fall on regarding student loan forgiveness?

• The effects of the pandemic are still being felt by many Americans and I agree that loan forgiveness needs to happen.

• Students borrowed this money expecting to pay it back and should.

• Loan forgiveness is a noble idea but shouldn’t we fix the system first?

DENTAL PROBLEMS AND CLEFT LIP OR PALATE

Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects affecting approximately one in every 1,600 babies. Cleft lip occurs when the tissues between the mouth and nose don’t come together properly in utero, leaving a gap or cleft. Cleft palate happens when this improper tissue growth occurs on the roof of the mouth or palate. The two conditions can occur together or on their own. In either case, the conditions cause several problems for developing babies, including issues with teeth, breathing, feeding, and talking. Children born with this condition often have missing teeth along the line of the cleft. They may also have extra teeth, misshapen or rotated teeth, and severe crowding. These problems often warrant additional dental and orthodontic care.

We know it is important to you that the people who take care of your oral health needs be well-informed, knowledgeable, highly skilled, and caring and compassionate. Our promise to you, then, is that our office will provide you with dental care of the highest quality, based on sound medical modalities, using the most appropriate procedures, and utilizing extremely qualified staff members. Keep on top of your dental health by calling BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. Comfortable, comprehensive dental care for you and your family is available at 6 Batavia City Centre P.S.Cleft lip and cleft palate are often corrected through surgery during a child’s first twelve to eighteen months.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My question regards the results of my fasting glucose tests for the past couple of years. I am 81 and weigh around 150 pounds. The medications I am taking concern me, with relevance to the A1C levels of my quarterly blood work. My A1C levels have mostly been near mid-5%; the last showed 6%. Medications relevant to this that I am suspicious of are 100-12.5 mg of losartan/hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and 20 mg of simvastatin. I have read that these medications can have an effect of raising blood glucose. My doctor is adamant that this does not exist, but it seems to me that there is a conflict on this. Should I perhaps ask him to change those medications because of my blood sugar? I am concerned about issues with the thiazide and the statin. -- P.R. ANSWER: There isn’t a conflict. You are absolutely right that both simvastatin (like all statins) and HCTZ (like all thiazides) increase blood sugar and the risk of diabetes. The risk, however, is small. For thiazides, the risk of high blood sugar seems tied to potassium levels -- the lower the potassium, the higher the risk of diabetes. Interestingly, the losartan in combination with the HCTZ you are taking tend to raise potassium levels, so that combination may have a lower risk of worsening blood sugar levels than taking HCTZ alone. You are already taking the smallest effective dose of thiazide. The risk of statins seems greater in higher doses and with more potent statins, like atorvastatin and rosuvastatin; however, the risk is still small. About one person in 100 treated with a high-dose intensive statin, such as 40 mg of atorvastatin for five years, would be expected to get diabetes, while a dosage of 20 mg of simvastatin would be expected to have an even lower risk.

The conflict isn’t whether the increased risk exists (it does), but whether the treatments to prevent heart attack and stroke are worth the increased risk. For nearly all people, the benefit of keeping blood pressure and cholesterol under control greatly outweighs the small increased risk of diabetes. Given your normal A1C level, I would say your risk is low, and I do not generally recommend changing treatment based on your concern over blood sugar.

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Smart shopping involves making budget-friendly purchases. Never paying full price is a mantra shoppers can follow to help keep their finances in check. In addition to coupons and other discounts, shoppers can usually score deals based on which time of year they shop for particular items. Each year, various consumer resources offer advice on the best time to buycertain items. The beginning of the year is often an ideal time to purchase certain items. Consumers who take advantage of sales offered at the start of the new year can save substantial amounts of money. Now that the holiday season has passed, consumers can begin to find deals on itemsfor themselves.

Huge Thank You!

To the wonderful person who found my wallet at the plaza on Commerce Drive in Victor on February 18th and turned it in to a store. You have no idea how much you helped a stranger! My wallet contained my license, cash, gift cards and a charge card. Everything was still there. I will never forget your selflessness! You are a miracle to me.

The Stranger whose kindness restored my faith today!

I wanted to get my sincere thank you out to the gentleman who pulled me out of a slushy frozen mess in the parking lot near the ATM in Churchville today. After struggling trying to dig out my old beat up 2WD truck on my own for nearly half an hour to no avail... I wish I had taken the time to ask the gentleman’s name and shake his hand. Your kindness was truly unexpected and words cannot express how much you helped me not only get out of my predicament, but how much you improved my frustration and the somewhat angry and rude mood I had started my day with. Thank you so much for the assistance and for your kind words and demeanor. It meant more than you know.

Thank you

Many thanks to the kind and honest person who found my purse at Wegman’s and returned it to the customer service desk. Your action was much appreciated!

How clean is your street?

A big thumbs down to my neighbor who thinks it's his job to clean the street. Cleaning up debris in the street is good; dumping it in your neighbor’s yard, not so good. Now this is not trash. It is ice and snow buildup along the curb. It's not in anyone's way and it will melt. Now it's piled in my front yard along with all the dirt and stones that the plow has scraped up. It looks terrible and was totally unnecessary! Do you think when it melts he will come over and clean that up? No. So you're retired and bored, me too! The next time you feel the need to clean the street, please use your own yard as the dumping ground.

Stop turning small towns into the inner city I moved out here a little over 10 years ago. I am so disappointed in how so many stores and restaurants are being built in the same parking lots. Like one in front of the other, looking like the big inner cities. Too many apartments now going up on every corner too. The bright lights in the store windows are awful and make it look like downtown pawn shops all along the main drag. Enough is enough, crime goes up and areas start to look like trash with all these businesses on top of each other. The rush hour is bad enough. The more you keep putting up here, the more traffic. Please leave some dignity to this town.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

This date marks the day the UN signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

I am the smallest of my living species. I have the narrowest black stripes of any of my subspecies and I am also the darkest in orange compared to other subspecies. I weigh 260 lbs on average and grow up to 8ft long.

Why is World Wildlife Day important? We all share one planet. Ensuring Earth remains a thriving, living, breathing planet means taking care of everything in it. Overfishing can result in disastrous economic problems for coastal communities dependent on the trade. The loss of a species can lead to changes in the local environment, which can directly a ect the humans living there. Wildlife conservation is an integral part of creating a sustainable world.

I have a paler coat than most subspecies of my kind, and large, dark, widely spaced rosettes with thick, unbroken rings. They weigh 70-105 pounds. I have a thick coat that can grow as long as 7 centimeters in winter.

I am one of the world’s largest living primates. I have muscular arms, a massive chest, and broad hands and feet — and longer hair and shorter arms than my lowland cousins. My thick black hair helps insulate from cold weather.

I reach a shoulder height of between 6.6 and 10.5 ft, weigh between 4,400 and 8,800 lbs, and have 20 pairs of ribs. I typically have smaller tusks. My skin color is lighter than that of maximus and indicus with the least depigmentation.

You may think my skin is black, but it is dark gray or dark brown. I am 10.812.0 ft long and 1,760-3,080 lbs. I have a large head, short neck and short, thick legs. I also have a prehensile, pointed upper lip.

My habitat consists of the lowland rainforests and tropical, swamp, and mountain forests on the island of Borne. I have a round face with a dark red coat. I have strong hands and hand-like feet, along with flexible hips and long arms that allow me to live primarily in treetops.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption.

Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage.

Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition.

Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers.

All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. A hammer, wrench, pliers, and a few screwdrivers are handy tools to have around inside the house.

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE

In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location.

In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, andtheAmericasallrecordedarounda5percentincreaseininternational arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day.

Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible.

Infrequenttravelersorthosewhohavenevertraveledmaynotunderstand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing.

1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either.

3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change.

4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective.

Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

ARNOLD, CHURCHVILLE DOG, NOMINATED FOR ROC TOP PET

He may be a senior, but he sure is feisty.”

What else does the Verona Street Animal Society do besides the annual Roc Top Pet contest? Plenty. If you’re looking to adopt a pet, check their website to read available animals’ bios. Many of the pets at Verona are strays, so they may not have information regarding history, but each pet is examined by the clinical and technical teams to ensure the animal is healthy, ready for a home, and to provide as much information as possible.

Verona Street Animal Society also assists with lost and found pets. ey also help license, spay and neuter, provide rehoming support and pet safety assistance, as well as other assistance.

Pet Ale beer. e brewmasters from ree Heads Brewery will make a specialty blend to be featured at their brewery and in local Wegmans stores. Winners will be announced at a special release party in March.

e best prize is bragging rights and recognition from the community of the Top Pet. e rst prize winner will receive a custom-engraved Roc Top Pet plaque/cheese board, a six-pack of the dog’s new beer, a professional photo session, a decorated dog cookie box, a bandana, a canvas bag and pub glass, two general admission tickets to see the Wood Brothers and Shovels & Ropes at the Perinton Center Stage Amphitheater on June 11, Paw Balm, and a $20 gi card.

A Churchville dog nominated for Roc Top Pet is Arnold, a Maltese. He is almost 16 years old. He enjoys hanging out on the porch and watching the world and people go by. Arnold loves watching the Bu alo Bills with his people. In the summertime, he loves being on the water in a boat with his humans. Arnold likes to be included in conversations around the home bar. Oh, and treats. He loves food. He is a little guy with a huge personality. Arnold is a loyal buddy.

JackieLewert,Arnold’sowner, said,“Arnoldhasbeenwithme since I graduated college. He has been with me through so many life events. He spent the rst year living in Churchville with me and my family. He was with me for my rst apartment, meeting my husband, Ian, walking down the aisle in our wedding, and moving back to Churchville when we bought our rst house in 2020. He likes to meander through Churchville Park with us.

Monetary and item donations are always welcome to help maintain and improve the comfort and care of the animals at the shelter. Donations also help provide access to resources for pet owners in under-served neighborhoods. All food and treat donations must be unopened. Drop o any donations at the shelter during business hours.

How else can you help? Volunteer at the shelter. Volunteers are essential to the success of the organization. Giving your time and hearts to the animals makes a big di erence in the organization’s mission. Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD

(NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars.

“The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern.

One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times.

Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day.

You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

SENIOR NEWS

“Shrink ation.” at’s a word that’s been in the news lately, and one that we need to pay attention to.

We know prices are increasing on our groceries. We see it every time we look at the price tags on the shelves when we shop, and certainly at the checkout. But shrink ation is a di erent thing and can be harder to spot. Shrink ation is sneaky price increases.

In shrink ation, the prices don’t go up, but what we get comes down. is is impacting most things across grocery stores, including dairy, shampoo, meats, frozen foods, toilet paper, pet food, pastries, candy bars, laundry detergent, sliced cheese, tea bags ... well, everything.

Example: e price of a can of beans stays the same, but we get fewer ounces. Example: e price of a loaf of bread stays the same, but it’s smaller. Same with cereal, which you’ll have noticed when the box sizes changed.

In my case, one particular item (frozen meatballs) at my local store dropped from 64 meatballs to 56 ... fewer for the same money.

Keep an eye on the unit pricing on the tag on the grocery store shelf. Yes, it’s in tiny print (which is one reason to carry a small magnifying glass at all times), but the numbers will tell you the unit price per uid ounce, pound or count. Over time you’ll be able to see if you’re getting less for your money.

Look at generics to save money (and, in many cases, get a better product) or just change brands. Buy more than one if the price is good, but watch the expiration dates.

Lastly, consider signing up for a store’s loyalty card if you get cash bene ts for doing so, and sign up for the emailed weekly sales yer to shop from.

By shopping carefully, we can beat them at their own game.

HOW

Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW

Be brief yet effective

A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* If you have a plastic-bristle broom that is starting to get really ragged and it’s time to replace it, don’t get rid of it.Turn it into a scrub broom.Trim the bristles down to about an inch. You can even cut them at an angle. Then you can use this broom to scrub stubborn spots. The bristles are nice and tight when they are so short.

* Check your windshield wiper blades. Are they smeary? Before you replace them, use a paper towel and rubbing alcohol to clean the blades. They might have life left in them yet!

* Still fire season in your neck of the woods? Most of us know not to burn magazine inserts or anything plastic, but did you know that you CAN add some spice to your fire? Save the peel from your citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines, grapefruit -- even lemons and limes) to add to your fire. They burn well, and they smell great!

* “We had a piece of linoleum left over when we replaced the kitchen flooring. It was almost a perfect size to put over our picnic table. We use it for crafts and whenever we don’t want anything to fall through the boards. It stores neatly against the wall behind our outdoor shelves when we aren’t using it!” -- R. in Minnesota

* If you have a light bulb that has broken off in the socket and you need to get it out to replace it, use needlenose pliers to grab the metal ring and unscrew it. Be sure to turn the light off first! If that doesn’t work, you might be able to use a bar of soap to grab any glass shards sticking out, and unscrew it that way.

* “When I put on my stockings, I put on my dish gloves first. It sounds silly, but I do not have any snags in my stockings, and the grip of the gloves makes them easy to pull up and adjust for a perfect fit.” -- W.M. in New York
