Congratulations!

NOW HERE’S A TIP

And Welcome Dr Gregor

By JoAnn Derson * Sometimes, despite the cold weather outside, we’re still looking for an icy treat inside. In my family’s dessert experiments, we’ve come up with some doozies, but here’s one you may not have tried: If you put popsicles in the blender, the creamy result tastes just like yummy sherbet. -- JoAnn * If your lunchbox could be fresher, here’s a tip from S.W. in Texas: Spray a piece of bread with vinegar and zip it up in your lunchbox overnight to clear out smells. * “You don’t need to buy a special brush to get at high ceilings and skylights: Simply cover a broom with a pillowcase to clean cobwebs off the ceiling. To clean a skylight, cover a mop with a double layer of paper towels or newspaper, and secure with clips. Spray the paper with window cleaner and heft it up!” -- M.E. in Arkansas * “Here are two more uses for orange peels: Remove all labels and hard parts of the peels. Toss orange peels in a quart Mason jar. When full, fill with vinegar and set in warm place for two weeks. Strain into spray bottle, then discard peels. Makes an excellent disinfectant and ant killer. Or, dry orange peels. When crisp-dry, break into pieces and toss in a blender, then blend to a powder. Put in airtight container to sprinkle on fruit salads or use for orange zest.” -- B.C. in New Hampshire

Adam R. Gregor, D.D.S.

You have entrusted us with your dental care, many of you since my father opened this practice in 1963. After 35 years of practicing dentistry, I have decided to retire. Our practice philosophy has always been to deliver exceptional dentistry and service, and a welcoming atmosphere to our patients. An exhaustive search to find a doctor capable of carrying on these philosophies was conducted. We would like to welcome Adam Gregor D.D.S, whose values align perfectly with ours. He has my blessing to be your new dentist, and ours too.

Sincerely, Dr. Mike and Sharon Kubiniec

DEAR MIKE: Oh, that’s frustrating! But you can help Perry to tolerate his collar and leash by making some adjustments and rebuilding a positive association with the leash. Here are a few tips to start with: * Check the fit and comfort of Perry’s collar. Sometimes owners buy stylish collars that look great on their pet but are uncomfortable and either too big or too small. * Consider a chest halter instead of a collar. This provides a supportive fit and when you tug on the leash, pressure is distributed around a dog’s torso rather than its neck. * Re-introduce Perry to the new collar or halter gradually. Show him the new gear while offering a treat at the same time. When he’s eating, gently drape the leash over his back. Give lots of praise at the same time. This starts to create positive connections with the new gear. * Conduct obedience training at home, in 10-minute sessions, while Perry wears the new collar or halter. Review basic commands of “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” Leave the leash off at first. * Add the leash, but don’t tug on it. Continue obedience training while Perry wears the new gear. Take the gear off when done. * Gradually increase the time your dog wears the collar or harness and leash. This will take patience, lots of love and encouragement. Always be positive with Perry while retraining to the leash. And if, despite these efforts, he still doesn’t respond, contact a professional trainer to help you both get through this stuck spot. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Apollo!!

Hi, I’m Mom and dad adopted me last year. I am exactly one year old this month. I’m still crazy because my puppy pants still fit, and I love to put everything in my mouth, especially the cat...but it’s all out of love and play. If you see me around the neighborhood, just say hi! I am a bit shy, but I love everyone.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Perry” tugs, fights and whines when I put a collar and leash on him. He will even flop down and refuse to move. I don’t know what to do. -- Mike D., Roanoke, Virginia

BAGPIPES ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF IRISH MUSIC TRADITION Celtic culture is rife with tradition. Traditional music is one identifying factor of the people who reside in countries awash in Celtic heritage, such as Ireland and Scotland. The strains of bagpipes can be heard during various celebrations and memorials. Bagpipes can produce uplifting and upbeat tunes or somber notes ideal for moments of reflection. Bagpipes are in a class of musical instruments known as aerophones. They produce sound through reeds from a constant reservoir of air trapped in a bag. Bagpipes are comprised of an air supply; a bag that holds the air; a chanter, which looks similar to a recorder and has finger holes to produce the melody; and one or more drones, which produce the sustained pitch. In bagpipes, the drones are the pipes placed over the musicians’ shoulders. Since the 14th century, bagpipes have appeared in European art and literature. Evidence of bagpipes in Ireland can be traced back to 1581, when John Derrick’s “The Image of Ireland” clearly illustrates a bagpiper. However, actual examples of bagpipes found before the 18th century are rare. What some music aficionados may not know is that not all bagpipes are the same, and Irish bagpipes have distinctions that set them apart from other varieties. Irish bagpipes, or uilleann pipes, differ from other types of bagpipes, including Scottish Highland pipes. Uilleann is derived from the Irishlanguage term piobai uilleann, which means, “pipes of the elbow.” A full set of uilleann pipes has a chanter, three drones and three keyed regulators. A half set will have no regulators. The pipes are tuned in the key of D, and unlike many other pipes, the reed will over blow. This gives uilleann pipes a range of two octaves. The chanter also can produce sharps and flats. In addition, regulators give them extra dimension of sound. Irish pipes have a softer sound than other bagpipes, enabling them to be played indoors. Although bagpipes have been integral to ancient Irish history, they are still alive and well today. Many bagpipers still proudly play them throughout Europe and in North America. The resonating sound of the pipes can be heard during parades and various celebrations, such as on St. Patrick’s Day.

Special thank you to Town of Batavia Fire Department and Town of Batavia Water Personnel for their extremely quick response on Thurs., Feb. 24th. We appreciate your diligence and staying with us until the problem was under control. Bless you, Batavia First United Methodist Church

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Genetics may be the biggest culprit in undereye circles. Some people simply inherit fair or thin skin around the eyes. This can make blood that pools in these areas (from stretched or broken capillaries) more visible. While a person cannot change his or her skin tone, gently washing one’s face - paying careful attention to the sensitive eye area - can help reduce damage. Also, getting more sleep can increase circulation to this area and prevent blood pooling.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read about turmeric for osteoarthritis. I’m on a limited income. Please tell me more about it, like how much it costs and where I can get it. -- W.C. ANSWER: Turmeric, a spice that has been used for millennia, is the source of curcumin, which has been shown to improve symptoms of osteoarthritis, at least in short-term studies. It is generally thought to be safe, as most people have no side effects or only occasional stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea. A theoretical concern is bleeding, in combination with anticoagulants, but this appears to be rare. I have had many patients try curcumin, and it has improved symptoms in about half of those who tried it. Turmeric is easy to find at any grocery store, but when curcumin is used as a supplement, it is usually combined with other supplements to help with absorption. A common one is piperine, derived from black pepper. It’s difficult to use turmeric from food to get a pharmacologic effect. The usual dose is 400-500 mg two or three times daily. A month’s supply from a reliable online retailer I found cost about $10.

Your Smiles Aside from daily oral hygiene practiced at home, another option for tooth protection is a dental sealant. This thin, protective coating is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, stopping cavity formation and preventing the early stages of decay. Sealants keep bits of food, bacteria, and acids from settling on the teeth by creating a barrier that protects the teeth’s surface. Sealants have been shown to reduce decay in molars up to 80 percent, which is especially advantageous for children, although adults benefit as well. Early application to molars, especially when they first erupt, can keep teeth cavity-free and help avoid costly future dental treatments. Dental health professionals can determine if sealants will benefit their patients.

hands, and he thinks it’s from stress. He had psoriasis a long time ago, and now it reappeared. He is stressed because I am sick. Please tell me what cream he can use. Before, he used some good Yugoslavian cream called Vipsogal. -- M.A.M. ANSWER: Psoriasis is a common skin condition thought to be caused by abnormalities in the immune system. There are several forms, but most people with psoriasis notice plaques or papules on the skin. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the psoriasis, but the important part is that it needs evaluation before treatment, both to determine the correct diagnosis and assess severity. This includes at least a joint exam for psoriatic arthritis and a careful history to look for other associated conditions, such as in the eye. Severe disease may need systemic therapies, including biological ones. I looked up Vipsogal and it is a combination of several medicines, especially high-potency steroids. These are the mainstay of treatment for most people with mild to moderate psoriasis and are available in the U.S. and Canada only with a prescription. It’s a powerful medicine with the potential for real harm if used incorrectly. Your husband should see a dermatologist. ***

Churchville-Chili Students Use Talent and Hard Work to Support Willie Bee Foundation BY AMANDA PULEO

S

tudents in Churchville-Chili High School’s Functional Life Skills class got back in the game this year after two years off due to the pandemic – renewing their annual tradition of handcrafting holiday decorations to raise money for a community organization. This time around, they chose to support the Willie Bee Foundation, a nonprofit that benefits local families with a child facing life-threatening illness, donating almost $600 in cash and gifts. In addition, they donated 60 pairs of socks, purchased with funds from their United Saints Café coffee cart business, to the Open Door Mission.

Students delivered 60 pairs of new, soft white socks to Rochester’s Open Door Mission.

“Since the holiday craft projects began in 2005, the Life Skills class has raised over $12,945 for charity,” said teacher Margaret Brongo. “Students are thankful to our supportive customers, who are members of our district educational community. Our crafters love the fact that their work and creativity can make a difference in the lives of others. The students take this very seriously and faculty members look forward to backing the project every winter.” The 2021 holiday season saw the group fulfilling orders for 117 white sock snowmen, filled with rice and decorated with colorful scarves, pom-poms, buttons and happy faces. Ultimately, $593.98 was donated to their charity of choice, the Willie Bee Foundation https://www.thewilliebeefoundation.org. The organization was founded in 2017 by Clay and Christine Beeman, who lost their son to cancer. Christine teaches English at Churchville-Chili High School. Over the past 16 years, Life Skills classes have crafted a variety of charming elves, mice, penguins, reindeer and polar bears from socks and rice. Proceeds from the project have gone to Golisano Children’s Center, Ronald McDonald House, American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Honor Flight, Make a Wish, Lollypop Farm, The American Red Cross and the School of the Holy Childhood, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Camp Smile, The Dream Factory, Gigi’s Playhouse and Homesteads for Hope.

“The holiday craft project is the perfect opportunity to apply the skills we learn and practice in the classroom,” said Brongo. “Most of the orders this year were taken online, but students still learned interpersonal communication skills, like greeting customers and delivering orders. They learned how to measure rice for the filling, and practiced writing and replying to emails. They also used soft skills needed for employment, like following directions, getting along with coworkers and exercising quality control.” In addition to the annual holiday craft, students also practice vocational and interpersonal skills through the classroom’s coffee cart business: taking orders and delivering hot chocolate and coffee to staff and teachers at the high school. Running this small business gives students the chance to interact with customers, handle money, manage inventory and build confidence. The Unified Saints Café has been sidelined since the beginning of the pandemic, but everyone is hoping it will start again soon. Enjoy this article? Can you connect the transmission message from one of Alexander Graham Bell’s telephones to the other? Make sure they can send the message to each other!

Bell studied the human voice and worked with various schools for the deaf. Bell experimented with sound, working with devices such as a ‘harmonic telegraph’ (used to send multiple messages over a single wire) and a ‘phonautograph’ (used to record sound). He worked on acoustic telegraphy with his assistant, an electrical designer named Thomas Watson. Bell’s #irst words with the working telephone were spoken to his assistant Watson and were along the lines of “Mr Watson, come here. I want to see you.”

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

Older properties tend to have a sense of charm that new ly built homes may lack. Perhaps it’s their lived-in feel or design elements that remind homeow ners of yesteryear that make older homes so popular among home buyers. W hat older homes have in character they may lack in modern amenities. For example, w hereas many homes are now built w ith energy efficiency in mind, older homes may not be so eco-friendly. Fortunately, there are many w ays for homeow ners w ho love their older homes to keep that love going strong w hile making their homes more energy efficient at the same time.

All shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are shamrocks. The home and garden resource The Spruce indicates that the term “shamrock” comes from the Gaelic word seamrog, meaning “little clover.” There is no consensus as to which species of clover is the true shamrock. However, many botanists agree that the white clover (Trifolium repens) is the shamrock. However, the lesser trefoil, or hop clover, the black medick and red clover all can be contenders. Four-leafed clovers of any variety are not shamrocks and should not be portrayed as such. That is because the shamrock is a three-leafed sprout that was believed to be utilized by St. Patrick to demonstrate the principle behind the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick, pointing to the three leaflets united by a common stalk, used this visual analogy to spell out the mystery of Christianity’s doctrine of three entities making up one Lord: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, for all of the purported good luck finding a four-leaf clover may bring - based on mythology imparted by ancient Celts called Druids - it cannot be passed off as a shamrock.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Rebuilding Lost Muscle A show of hands: How many of us feel that we’ve lost muscle strength during the pandemic? Unfortunately, the answer is that many of us have, and we’re going to have to fight to get it back. There we were, with regular workout and walking routines, on top of all our other daily activities. Along came COVID and its “stay home” restrictions. There were no more early morning walks at the mall, no more visits to the gym for weight training, no more workout or dance classes ... not even any Tai Chi at the senior center. And there went our muscle mass. Getting back to where we were is going to be tough ... but we need to try. Here are a few thoughts on rebuilding our muscle strength: • Look to YouTube for exercise videos designed for seniors. You’ll find thousands: seated exercises, workouts at home, walking workouts, low impact, beginners and so many more. • Sit in a kitchen chair and stand up. Sit down again. Stand up. Repeat 10-12 times. • Invest in hand weights (order them from Amazon and they’re delivered right to your door). Don’t kid yourself and assume you’re ready to wield a pair of 10-pound weights. Start small with 2-pound weights. If you need to order heavier ones, again, be cautious and don’t jump up more than 1-2 pounds. Try increasing the number of repetitions day by day. If necessary, use 1-gallon plastic jugs (one in each hand), partially filled with water, as weights. • If you have stairs in your home, use them to help your leg muscles. Increase the number of times you go up and down each day. Take it easy, especially at the beginning, but be persistent. Some of us are going to have to fight hard to rebuild the muscle mass we’ve lost. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Ladies, before you put a ring on it, you might want to consider that a survey of 17,000 people across 28 countries found that the amount of time a man spends doing chores on a weekly basis decreases significantly after he marries.

POLL Some say the United States should not send troops into the Russia-Ukraine conflict because allegedly Ukraine is of strategic importance to the United States, many Americans do not want a war, and the danger of a superpower confrontation. Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine? • Yes! • No!

AUTO SECTION

Serves 4 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/4 cup orange juice 4 boneless chicken breast halves, slashed (see below) Salt Avocado Mango Salsa (optional)

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

Combine garlic, chili powder, oregano, thyme, cumin, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, oil, lime juice, and orange juice. Add chicken and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, turning once. Grill according to instructions below. Sprinkle with salt. Serve hot with avocado mango salsa if you prefer.

BATAVIA’S PREMIUM QUICK LUBE

Outdoor grill: Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. Indoor grill: Preheat broiler. Broil skin-side up until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue cooking until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. To slash the chicken breasts: With a sharp knife, cut 3 parallel slashes through the skin, about 1/4-inch deep. Marinate chicken up to 2 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate, turning several times in marinade.

Shifting Perspectives I used to dismiss when adults told me to slow down driving through neighborhoods. Now I’m in my 30s with young children and can’t help wanting to install speed bumps for the teenagers in our neighborhood. My wife thinks I’m crazy, but going 40+ Mph in suburbia is too fast!

S E V RA Kudos for Hard Work Kudos to Kate and her staff at Dollar General in LeRoy. With her guidance, together they brought the store from an unsafe mess to a store that’s clean, stocked, and a pleasure to shop in. This store was in very bad shape, and they have worked very hard. Thank you, and know you are appreciated. Auto Repair Super Powers! Hats off to Michael Kurzawski, the owner of Four Seasons Collision shop in Brockport. This guy embodies integrity and good will. I took my Subaru over to Mike’s shop. (He doesn’t know me at all.) I asked about a “popped out fender” on my car. He took a look at it and within minutes knew exactly how to fix it, and he did. He wouldn’t take any money, and even graciously refused a tip. What a guy! As we continue to make an effort to support local retailers, let’s remember Mike when you need auto body repairs. He’s the real deal. Thanks Mike! - Ray in Brockport. Fire Dept. I wish to express how very impressed I am with the Springwater Fire Department. Their prompt action and experience which they portrayed for neighbors manifested in sincere community service. It undoubtedly saved a home from being reduced to ashes by morning. Thank you to all the persons and responders for your service. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Ukraine I am so sad for the poor people of the Ukraine. How horrible to wake up one day to have a ruthless dictator decide to take over your country! A peaceful, democratic land that had been co-existing with every country, including Russia, is now forced to fight and, for many, to flea their beloved homes. Too bad the sanctions that Putin is incurring aren’t harsh enough to dissuade him from this senseless aggression. Perhaps in time, NATO will be able to “peacekeep” for the sake of all. Until then, pray for the Ukrainians! Don’t Polute! Littering is very bad. To see bottles, cans, cups, paper, cigarette butts, and more strewn about makes me feel sad. We must prevent litter from getting on the ground before it is found. Children should draw or write a page describing a beach or park filled with litter compared to those which are clean. To litter is very mean.

According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY

is hiring!

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
