Joseph Gordon Young February 26, 2020 Mr. Joseph Gordon Young passed away peacefully on February 26, 2020, at the Veterans’ Home in Batavia, NY. Mr. Young leaves behind his loving wife Harriet of 68 years; three children, Patricia Jo Ferguson (Richard), Jeffery Young (LuAnn), and Larry Young; and four grandchildren, Veronica, Sarah, Ariel and Brandon Young. Joe, as he was called, was born on August 30, 1931, in Corning, NY where he was the youngest of 5 children. Following high school graduation, he spent time in the Army, worked on a farm, then worked at Foster Wheeler Corp for 12 years, and Eastman Kodak for 27 years. He was a certified welder and welding instructor at both Foster Wheeler and Eastman Kodak. Mr. Young was a skilled craftsman, focusing on woodworking. He rebuilt, remodeled and upgraded each home he owned over the past 60 years. In recent years, Joe built wooden toys each year for distribution to local children. He was known for making wooden signs and cabinets in his community and created beautiful decorative wooden pieces. His wood shop was his second home. When he wasn’t working with wood, Joe was restoring his many old classic tractors. A love of the outdoors was evident throughout Joe’s life. Camping was a main attraction for the family as his children were growing up. Annual vacations were always camping experiences. Starting with a tent, moving on to pop-up campers, a pull-behind camper, and, finally, a 5th-wheeler, these were useful equipment not only for vacationing but also a necessity when Joe was volunteering with the SOWERS. Throughout his lifetime, Joe was always active in his church community. At one time, he and his wife assisted with a church plant, hosting the new congregation in their home every week. After retirement, Joe utilized his trade skills and his love for volunteer mission work through working with the SOWERS group. With his wife, he traveled to many sites to refurbish Christian camps and schools over a ten-year period. They consider this a most rewarding and enjoyable time in their life together. Mr. Young’s friends and family are invited to celebrate his life at a Memorial service to be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 7th at Peace Memorial Church on Buffalo Rd, North Chili, NY. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Circulation Manager .................................Shari Rapone
Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

FOUR EASY TIPS THAT WILL KEEP YOU WORKING OUT ALL WINTER LONG (NAPSI)—Many people find that when the temperature falls, so does their motivation and the frequency of their workouts. But it shouldn’t. Research has shown that working out through the cold winter months strengthens the immune system to help fight off those cold weather blues and illnesses. Knowing how to stay motivated and what to do to keep your fitness routine challenging is key: Staying on track and meeting your fitness goals during the cold season can give you a jump start on setting higher goals and staying active through spring and summer. Fortunately, advances in technology and social media have made it easier to add variety and personalize your workouts. Online videos make it easier than ever to customize workouts to fit your individual needs and goals, as well as find inspiration to keep up your hard work regardless of where you might be in your fitness journey. To help, Tom Holland, exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor, shares these tips on how to diversify your workouts to maintain your motivation while maximizing your results. 1. Shake up your routine. Many people do the exact same workout every time, performing the same exercises in the same order. This is one major reason you stop seeing results—your body has become accustomed to the stress. A simple yet extremely effective way to overcome a plateau, or avoid it in the first place, is to simply change the order of your exercises. This “pre-fatigues” your body in a new and different way, keeping it challenged and the results coming. 2. Enjoy the great outdoors. Studies show that you can burn more calories, strengthen your endurance, and combat the winter blues by working out in the cold. If you decide to challenge Mother Nature with an outdoor workout, make sure you dress appropriately with layers and stay hydrated even though you may not feel like you need it. 3. Work smarter. The new Max Intelligence platform, available with the Bowflex Max Trainer M6 and M8 cardio machines (www. bowflex.com/max-trainer), uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze your workouts, and automatically adjusts your fitness plan to help you continue making progress towards your goals. Through an initial fitness assessment and predictive analytics, Max tracks and collects data from your previous sessions, customizes your workouts every day and provides spoken encouragement to keep up the good work. In addition, Max can assess your fitness data to serve up appropriate trainer-led videos and educational content to provide instruction and motivation. 4. Mix it up. Find fun videos to inspire new workouts. There are many available from certified professionals. Trying something new can help challenge your muscles in different ways. It also helps build your mental stamina to keep you sharp and focused as you concentrate on remembering the new movements and order of the routine. Step outside your comfort zone—you might just discover a new favorite way to work out. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

over a bit, I would question your driving abilities. If you stubbornly stayed in the lane and caused a crash, you can tell it to the Judge. Why? Because you had the right of way, you were justified? Police go around vehicles, also. Do you complain about them too? With so many cars on the roads you must be more flexible and understanding. Uber may be a better alternative for you.
Yeah, we know you have the right of way. My question is, would you purposely cause an accident because you have that right of away? If someone’s going around a delivery truck or mail truck and crosses the center line by a foot or two, why can’t you just move over? Nobody’s trying to force you into a ditch. If you can’t move

This has been going on all year for several years at one farm in particular. The roadway is constantly covered. Why should I have to drive extra miles to avoid this area and the stench as it splashes all over my car? I don’t see this anywhere else. CURE!!
YOUR FUNGAL TOENAILS
• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2016. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
‘Cotton Ball’ Sensation Is a Sign of Neuropathy ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 63-year-old male diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. I am 5 feet, 11 inches and weigh 240 pounds. I have two stents and take Sprycel for the CML. My levels are good, and the coronary disease is under control. For a few years I’ve had what feels like “cotton balls” under the skin in the area of the balls of my feet. Now it feels like it’s migrating to the arch. While not too uncomfortable, it is almost impossible to walk barefooted. Some type of foot covering is needed to keep from noticing the feeling. My doctor says it’s the diabetes, and to lose weight or see a podiatrist. Other than losing the weight, do you have any opinion about this? -- N.M. ANSWER: Cotton-ball sensation is one way that many people describe the beginning of neuropathy, a general term for a variety of different conditions that affect the nerves of the body. In a person with cancer (like CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow) and a new symptom, it is always wise to consider whether it could be due to the cancer, the treatment for the cancer or from something else. In your case, usually CML is not associated with neuropathy. However, the medicine you are taking, dasatinib (Sprycel), has been associated with a severe kind of reversible neuropathy. I read the case reports of this condition carefully, and I doubt that is what is going on with you, as the symptoms you have are different from those reported. People with longstanding diabetes frequently develop a particular disease of the nerves, diabetic neuropathy. This almost always begins with sensation changes in the feet. I agree with your doctor that diabetes is the most likely cause. Seeing a podiatrist is absolutely a good idea. He or she can test you for this condition (usually a careful physical exam will make the diagnosis), in addition to looking carefully for any early signs or risk factors for injury or infection. You also should learn how to do a daily inspection of your feet and recognize the signs, so you can get to medical attention promptly should any damage to your feet occur. The podiatrist will make sure you have appropriate footwear. Many people with diabetes benefit from weight loss, but the important thing is to be sure your diabetes is under good control. This is achieved through good diet, regular exercise and medication, if needed, in addition to weight loss in people who are overweight. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to cancer, my prostate was removed about seven years ago. My PSA reading has increased since 2012 from 0.09 to 0.304. Should I be concerned? I am 78 years old and in relatively good health. -- B.D. ANSWER: PSA readings can go up and down, but a threefold increase could mean that the cancer is coming back, and you should see the specialist taking care of your prostate cancer to discuss getting additional testing. Not having disease for seven years after treatment is a good sign, but the PSA test is pretty specific for cancer recurrence if two separate readings are above 0.2. You may need additional therapy, but only further investigation will show how concerned you need to be. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

QUICK REPAIR Anyone with a tooth that has chipped, cracked, broken, or become stained can take advantage of dental bonding. One of the quickest, easiest, and least expensive of dental procedures, “bonding” makes use of tooth-colored resin to fill gaps, mask discoloration, repair fractures, and make other cosmetic improvements in a single office visit. After the teeth have been etched with a mild acid that maximizes the bond between tooth and resin, the putty-like, tooth-colored resin is applied to the tooth and molded to the desired shape. Then, the resin is “cured” with a special light that hardens the resin in place. Finally, the resin is trimmed and polished. The entire procedure takes 30-60 minutes per tooth.
POLL In an effort to encourage more accountability and responsive behavior from the International Joint Commission, a bill put forward by Upstate New York Congressmen Katko, Brindisi and Morelle would allow lawsuits against the IJC which regulates Lake Ontario water levels. Do you agree with this?

DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.

Batavia’s Paul & Bridget Ohlson Celebrate 20 Years of Care-a-Van By Amanda Dudek
W
hile many people have deeply held religious beliefs, some of them may feel uncomfortable entering a church. For Paul Ohlson, this was an opportunity to serve. Care-a-Van, located in Batavia, brings support and spiritual encouragement out of buildings and onto the streets. In 2000, Paul Ohlson and his wife, Bridget, launched Care-a-Van with a motor home and some food. “We decided we were going to help people out with groceries,” said Ohlson. “We started parking up on State Street on Saturdays.” “In 2000, no one knew who we were,” Ohlson recalled. “A lot of people came out of curiosity to find out what we were about. Care-a-Van has never missed a Saturday in twenty years,” continued Ohlson. “It doesn’t matter if there are snowstorms or pouring rain. We go out even when the mailman won’t!” Care-a-Van grew quickly after this, adding more vehicles and outreach activities. “In 2003, we incorporated and became our own 501c3,” shared Ohlson. “In 2007, an old transit bus was donated to us, and we began going out and offering morning prayer and coffee.” It was also in 2007 that Ohlson left his career of 27 years to lead Care-a-Van fulltime. “It has been 13 years,” he said. “God has provided for us like we haven’t missed a beat.” This life-changing decision freed Ohlson to dedicate himself to being Committed, Consistent and Faithful to the ministry and community. Now with five vehicles, Care-a-Van reaches out to the Batavia Community in more ways than ever. It currently serves the City of Batavia with Saturday morning groceries and prayer, weekday morning bus coffee and prayer, summertime cookouts every Thursday with short teachings, worship and prayer and cookouts at community events, including Caring for the City Day which offers free dental care from Dr. Russ Marchese. Care-a-Van also cares for Paul Ohlson and his wife, Bridget community members during Ohlson, Care-a-Van founders. the holiday season. “We hold a Halloween night outreach,” explained Ohlson. “For Thanksgiving, we provide holiday food packages for people. We also create Christmas gift bags, each of which contain 28 items, for 350 seniors at eight different senior centers in Batavia. We sing Christmas Carols, tell the Christmas story and in the spring, we make strawberry shortcake for these seniors, as well. For some, ours is the only gift they will receive.” Care-a-Van vehicles also drive around in the afternoon on Christmas Day, offering Tim Hortons gift cards and prayer to anyone on the streets. For 19 years, Care-a-Van has offered groceries from a different location each Saturday of the month: Blondies Ice Cream the first, Liberty Square the second, the old town firehall across from K-Mart the third, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Washington the fourth and if there is a fifth Saturday, Northside Meadows. “People can always call 585-343-0328 to listen to our message which tells where we will be that week,” shared Ohlson. However, for Paul Ohlson, Care-a-Van is about a lot more than food. “We have been developing relationships for 20 years,” he said passionately. “Everyone gets prayed for. God cares, and so do we.” The community is responding. “People thank us; they know who we are,” said Ohlson. “Our vehicles are our buildings, and people are familiar with them. People

Care-a-Van brings food to the streets even on chilly Saturday mornings!
are always waiting when we pull up. Some of them aren’t even looking for food. They just want to talk and get prayer. Some ask us to officiate funerals for their loved ones, too. After 20 years, people start to listen to what you are saying.” About 80% of the support for Care-a-Van comes from individuals who have seen the consistency and unconditional nature of the work they do for Batavia’s communities, the other 20% comes from churches and businesses. “We are bringing the Gospel to the streets,” said Ohlson. “We are a 100% street ministry. We are where the people are.” Ohlson also thanks dedicated volunteers. “We have really good volunteers who are so appreciated,” he praised. “They put just as much into this ministry as I do.” Ohlson also shared that volunteers and those looking to complete community service are welcome to work with them, as well. Care-a-Van continues into 2020, thanks to the generosity of those who see its impact. “Our original bus wound up in the scrapyard this past August,” shared Ohlson. “An older S&S limo was anonymously purchased for us. God has always provided.” Still, there is one Care-a-Van vehicle which Ohlson would like to see put to use much more often: the mobile church. “I would love for churches to start using it to take the Gospel to the streets,” Ohlson enthused. “A church preached off the back of it once, and that was cool. I hope more churches utilize it, too.” “According to Mark 16:15, Jesus commanded us to go into all the world and preach the good news,” said Ohlson. “We hope to be found faithful in doing so.” For more information, call 585-343-0328. AUTO SECTION
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Change is still dominant for Rams and Ewes, both in the workplace and their private lives. This is also a good time to look at a possible relocation if that has been one of your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Doing things for others is what you do well. But don’t forget that Bovines thrive on the arts, so make some time for yourself to indulge your passion for music and artistic expressions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While the Romantic Twin considers where to go for his or her upcoming vacation, the Practical Twin will start making travel plans now to take advantage of some great bargains. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your sensitive nature helps you deal with a difficult emotional situation. Be patient and continue to show your sincere support wherever (and for whomever) it is needed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re making progress as you move through some unfamiliar territory. And while there might be a misstep or two along the way, overall you’re heading in the right direction. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some good news arrives -- and just in time to remind you that you’re making progress. Perhaps things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d prefer, but they’re moving nevertheless. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to step back and assess the facts that have recently emerged to see where they can be used to your advantage. Also, don’t hesitate to make changes where necessary. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should begin to experience some support from those who now agree with your point of view. This should help counter the remaining objections from die-hard skeptics. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t let your aim be deflected by trivial matters as you try to resolve a confusing situation. Take time to find and thoroughly assess the facts before making any decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The possibility of moving to another location has come up. But before you dismiss it as unworkable, it’s worth checking out just in case it does have some merit after all. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New relationships -- personal or work-related -show mixed signals. Best to assume nothing. Let things play themselves out until you have something substantive to work with. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your ability to make needed changes without causing too much, if any, negative ripple effect comes in handy when dealing with a sensitive matter either on the job or in the family. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you like things to go smoothly, you’re not shy about making waves when you believe the situation calls for it. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS

(NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.

Or contact: GVRPC, Inc 585-658-4870 TTY 1-800-662-1220 / www.gvrpc.com FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. Manage Your Blood Pressure And Protect Your Kidneys (NAPSI) - Did you know if
A Look Back…
you have high blood pressure you are at increased risk for chronic kidney disease?
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 5, 1977, the Dial-a-President radio program, featuring President Jimmy Carter, airs for the first time. Carter answered calls from all over the country from his desk in the Oval Office. Approximately 9 million calls flooded the CBS radio studio during the two-hour broadcast. On March 6, 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine. On March 7, 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for his revolutionary new invention -- the telephone. Bell’s patent filing beat a similar claim by Elisha Gray by only two hours.
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is the second leading cause of chronic kidney disease in the United States. About 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure may have chronic kidney disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels. If your blood pressure gets too high, the blood vessels in your body‚ including those in your kidneys‚ may become damaged. This damage makes it harder for the kidneys to filter blood and remove wastes and extra water from the body. Kidney disease can get worse over time, and if not treated it can lead to kidney failure. And while high blood pressure can lead to kidney disease, the reverse is also true: kidney disease can lead to high blood pressure. Simple tests can tell you whether you have high blood pressure or kidney disease. Ask your health care professional if you have been tested for high blood pressure and kidney disease. Many people with kidney disease don’t know they have the disease until their kidneys begin to fail. Research suggests that fewer than 1 in 10 people who have kidney disease are aware they have the disease. This is because kidney disease often doesn’t have any symptoms early on. The good news is that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits. “Our research continues to uncover the complexities of the link between high blood pressure and kidney disease,” says Griffin P. Rodgers, MD, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “And what we are finding supports the message that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits.” Adopting healthy lifestyle habits that help you manage your blood pressure will also help to keep your kidneys healthy. You can prevent or slow kidney disease progression by taking the following steps to lower your blood pressure: Take medicines as prescribed. Blood pressure medicines often play a key role in lowering blood pressure. Aim for a healthy weight. If you are overweight or have obesity, reducing your weight may lower high blood pressure. Select healthier food and beverage options. Follow a healthy eating plan that focuses on heart-healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats that are low in sodium. Stop smoking. Smoking damages blood vessels, increases your risk for high blood pressure, and worsens problems related to high blood pressure. For help quitting, call 1-800-QUITNOW or go to Smokefree.gov. Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can have an adverse effect on your blood pressure and metabolism. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Manage stress and make physical activity part of your routine. Healthy stress-reducing activities and regular physical activity can lower blood pressure. Try to get at least 30 minutes or more of physical activity each day. “You can manage your blood pressure and its complications through healthy lifestyle habits, which include exercise, following a healthy eating plan and taking blood pressure medication as prescribed by your doctor,” says Gary H. Gibbons, MD, director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). “It’s important to know your numbers because controlling or lowering your blood pressure can prevent or delay serious complications like kidney disease and heart disease.” For more information, visit the NIDDK website at www.niddk.nih.gov.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it. PROTECT YOUR FLOORS A way to prolong the life of flooring is to protect it from wear and tear. Removing shoes before walking indoors can help. Avoid high heels and athletic cleats, which can create divots in hardwood and some other types of flooring. Place indoor and outdoor mats at the entrances of the home to catch any dirt that would be ground into the flooring. Furniture protectors will help prevent scratches from furniture feet while moving pieces around a room. Remember to wipe up spills when they occur to prevent the formation of stains.
