NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A good non-slip bathmat is essential in the tub to prevent accidents. Grab an extra one to drape over the edge of the tub for help when entering and exiting. * “To remove residue left over from price tags, use hairspray. Remove as much paper as possible, and then give it a good squirt. Use a plastic scraper to lightly scrape off the adhesive.” -- L.P. in Ohio * “Guacamole is a precious commodity at my house, but sometimes I want a snack, not a whole bowl. I have struggled with how to save the leftovers, because once it browns, it’s done. I learned a new trick, though. Simply put the leftovers in the smallest container possible and tamp down to press out all the air. Then carefully add a thin layer of water. Seal and refrigerate for up to three days. When you’re ready to dip, pour off the water and stir!” -- C.D. in California * “I have an old cedar chest from my grandmother that had lost its smell. My husband removed all the contents and sanded it with superfine grit sandpaper. It smells wonderful now.” -- J.K. in Iowa * Got bread ends? Store in a bag in the freezer until you need breadcrumbs for a recipe. Pulse frozen chunks in a chopper or blender for instantly useable crumbs. * Need a quick measure? A dollar bill (or other U.S. paper currency) is exactly 6 inches long.

Pretzels, somewhat surprisingly, got their start in the Catholic Church. Sometime around the 7th Century A.D., monks presented their students with treats of baked dough twisted in the shape of crossed arms. At the time, crossing one’s arms was the traditional posture for prayer. Not only that, but pretzels, made from water, flour and salt, were also the perfect food for Lent, when meat, dairy and eggs were prohibited.

Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE
...........................Manuel Karam
(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:
Controller
Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.
........................Kathy Hammond Director of Advertising Sales
............................ Colleen Mann Creative Director
.............................. Cristie Leone Production Supervisor
................................. Jeff Wasson
Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
TOOTH DISCOLORATION: MANY COLORS AND CAUSES A noticeable change in color or the appearance of spots on teeth means discoloration is occurring. This can be caused by something that comes in contact with teeth such as tobacco, coffee, or red wine. The aging process or something inside your teeth or body can also be factors. Yellowing is the result of erosion of surface enamel, which exposes its core. White spots result from excessive fluoride contact. Smoking or chewing tobacco and routine consumption of coffee, tea, or red wine will discolor teeth to a brown hue. However, when a tooth turns black, it’s in an advanced stage of decay or tooth pulp necrosis. Visiting a dental health professional can determine the cause of discoloration and offer solutions. We hope you won’t let discolored, stained, chipped or otherwise less
than perfect teeth keep you from smiling. There are many ways cosmetic dentistry can work its magic to turn your smile into one you’ll be proud to show. For tooth-whitening, veneers, bonding, and other innovative cosmetic avenues toward a happier smile, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. We provide complete, state-of-the-art oral care in a friendly, relaxing environment at 6 Batavia City Centre. We’ll give you a reason to smile! P.S. Drinking through a straw is a simple solution to prevent staining teeth with beverages.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman, mostly healthy (apart from well-controlled high blood pressure). Looking at me, people assume I am skinny, but I have a well-concealed HUGE belly along with my thin arms and legs. I look like an olive stuck with toothpicks. My diet is healthy for the most part: I eat snack foods, deep-fried fast foods or sweets only rarely. I have read about how to eliminate belly fat, but there is so much contradictory info, each claiming to be the best. What are truly effective ways to help eliminate belly fat? -- M.H. ANSWER: First, I would want to be sure what you have really is belly fat. While there are men (and a few women) who have that body shape due to fat, I have seen far too many cases of liver disease (where the abdominal cavity is filled with fluid due to high pressure in the liver) and ovarian cancer (where the abdomen is filled with fluid due to tumor). I would want to be sure you had been evaluated for these (and other) concerns, especially if this is a change in your normal body shape. If it is abdominal fat, there is no magic diet. What works for someone else (even your twin sister, if you had one) might not work for you. For this reason, one single type of diet does not fit all. It may take patience and trying several different options before finding what works for you. General advice includes avoiding the foods you noted you eat sparingly. Eat lots of vegetables and whole grains with fiber; modest amounts of fruits; several servings of nuts and fish weekly; and no more than modest amounts of meats. Advice from an expert in weight management may be of great benefit. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 10

S E V RA Good Friday Treat! My friend and I stopped in for lunch at Peppermints in Avon on Good Friday. We each ordered one of their awesome fish fries. Imagine my surprise as I got up to pay for our meal when our server said our check was paid. We both were overwhelmed with the kindness! I don’t know if it was someone who knew us or a random stranger. Whomever it was, we were appreciative of the gesture, and as always, the fish fry was excellent!
Sky High Our village recently reassessed everyone. The average increase was 25%, raising all assessments by thousands. People are struggling with gas prices and food prices; now this? Seniors on fixed incomes will be forced out. If the leadership of our community does not intervene and lower the new assessments, we all need to stand together and vote them out. Sirens Needed Our friend is a first responder/fireman. We have been with him on many occasions when the siren goes off, and he leaves in a flash. Yes, there is an app on his phone that alerts of an incident. However, not every event is reported early enough to be sent out through the app, so first responders are notified via the siren. An incident doesn't just mean a fire. It could be a car accident (and someone must be removed with the Jaws of Life), child or animal locked in a hot car, an elderly person who has fallen and is unconscious- any number of things. These sirens let us know that our brave men and women are now aware that we need them. Be relieved that this notification system exists. If anything happened to you or one of your loved ones, you would be grateful that a warning has gone out to all your local first responders. It could make a difference between life or death. Stop when required! To the selfish people who decide to blow stop signs and/or cut people off in such a hurry just to drag their butts to their destination while sightseeing: If you're in that much of a hurry to break the law while cutting others off, at least continue on and don't hold up traffic! Money can't buy common sense!

Good Neighbors! On Tuesday, April 11th, we had appointments for our 2nd Covid boosters. Everything went fine at CVS in Avon. The pharmacist was excellent. Once we left, we walked to our car. My husband, with his low blood sugar, got dizzy. I got him part-way into the front seat, and he couldn't move. Just then, a woman in a van pulled up, and she asked if she could help. She had my husband put his arms around her, and she pulled him up and got him straight around. She was a nurse named Michelle from Caledonia: a true angel. Also, a young man came over to our car to see if we needed further assistance. They were both wonderful and really helped us out. God bless! - Martha Thanks! Thank you to the unknown gentleman who helped push my disabled car to the shoulder of Gauss Road on April 5th. I’m sorry that I didn’t ask your name but know that I am thankful for your help! - Pat, Bloomfield
Siren Rethink You're right. We are all grateful for first responders in our community, but you seem to think that the siren, which has been around for a long time, is affecting so many on the autism spectrum or with hearing aids? Is it really, or is it just bothering you? I'm a mother to an 8-year-old nonverbal boy, who I teach to understand all these sirens and loud noises as well as to understand their meanings. The sirens may not be necessary for those who receive the notifications to respond to such emergencies, but it's a general public notification each time to make sure your local fire department (if coming your way) has room. Also, not everyone is on their phones 24/7 (besides the fact the sirens remind me how important life is and how quickly it can go). So, that nice loud siren helps get those responders to the scene and or firehouse quicker. Maybe you should wear ear plugs and just be thank our community is still safe because of those "noise pollution sirens."

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Odds Are Your Pantry Holds Expired Food
Is it time to go through your pantry and look for any expired food items that might have been purchased over the past two years? You might be surprised. I sure was. I’d been careful, with new items lined up behind old ones in my cabinets. The problem I just discovered, after picking up a load of curbside items, is the expiration dates of newer items aren’t necessarily better than items that have been in the cabinet for a while. They might be worse. Why, I inquired of our store manager, was a box of crackers due to expire sooner than the box I bought two months ago? With a sigh, he admitted the problem: The warehouse is having a terrible time getting in anything. And managers have set up their own grocery swap with other nearby stores in the chain, basically bidding on items another store might have. “I’ll give you six boxes of crackers for six half-gallons of whole milk!” Additionally, he said, he’s having a heck of a time getting trained people to work the night shift to stock the shelves correctly. Then, when the curbside pickup people race through the aisles to select items for each order, they grab from the front ... without looking at expiration dates. Which is a long way of saying: Check your groceries. Either when you pick them up curbside and bring them home or when you take something out of your cabinets, look at the expiration dates and store them accordingly. A helpful note in seeing those expiration dates at home: A black marker is very handy to write expiration dates on packages and cans that can be seen at a glance. No more turning jars over trying to find a date; no more squinting at the tiny print. You’ll have all the dates in large black letters. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Som e older hom es m ay not even have three-pronged outlets, so this w ill necessitate an update as w ell. Page 19

MOMENTS IN TIME On April 23, 1564, the great English dramatist and poet William Shakespeare is born in Stratford-upon-Avon, the son of a leather trader and the town bailiff. At age 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior. (The History Channel)
DEAR CLARK: It’s a wild idea, but no, the photo circulating on social media is fake. Pet owners, you can put away those doggy pants. (Unless your dog enjoys wearing them, of course.) Officials with the city of Auburn, New York, were unpleasantly surprised to find their city’s letterhead going viral on social media just a couple of weeks ago. A fake letter said that residents’ pets would be required to wear pants outside so that their genitals would not be in view. “It is an uncomfortable and difficult situation for a parent, grandparent or guardian to have to explain to their ward when they are questioned about canine and feline genitals,” the letter said. It also claimed that many towns in New England have made pet pants mandatory -- also not true. It’s probably no accident that the fake letter started circulating just before April Fool’s Day. And while it seems like a funny prank, the city of Auburn isn’t laughing. “The intentional misrepresentation of the law and the forgery of the signature of an elected official are illegal acts and should be taken seriously,” City Clerk Chuck Mason told The Citizen. (Read the article at this link: https:// tinyurl.com/2p8uedv4, or search for “auburnpub.com, pet pants”). Hopefully, no one takes this to heart and tries to get a similar ordinance passed in their town. Our dogs and cats can let it all hang out with no fear of official reprisal, or ladies fainting away from the shock. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com. BIG IDEAS FOR BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES

There are some 30 million businesses in the U.S., ranging from small storefronts to large enterprise entities, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While businesses of all sizes play a critical role in the economy, each workplace faces its own unique challenges, especially as it relates to growth and scalability.

No Job Too Big, No Job Too Small
First, consider durable, affordable Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) deskset phones, which can manage Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls. Moving your telecommunications to the cloud can expand your phone system while maintaining central control. Cloud-based VoIP scales up or down, making it easy to add new locations or increase head count. SIP can also improve your business if you’re upgrading from an Ethernet jack or a traditional circuit transmission. This technology provides clear audio and reduces the need for costly installation and maintenance contracts. Some SIP desksets offer excellent user experience. Think color LCD screens for easy navigation, second screen displays with programmable keys, HD sound quality for natural conversations, and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free headset calls. Secondly, take an introspective look at what’s truly needed from a communications perspective of your business. Evaluate what your operational landscape looks like. You may require full-featured desksets and handsets, which can hold, transfer, conference and intercom. Or you may need cordless solutions to dramatically improve mobility around a busy workplace. Cordless handsets and wireless headsets let people take calls as they move around a restaurant, warehouse or large office, for example. Also consider whether you’ll need the ability to expand your communications system as your business grows. You may find multiple cordless handsets or desksets, with their own phone numbers or extensions, essential to future-proofing your company for more employees and customers. Remember, the right communications tools can have a major effect on the productivity, experience and growth of your company. Select a phone solution that meets your unique needs, as well as one with flexibility, mobility features, dependable call quality, advanced call handling, reliable U.S.-based technical support, and warranty coverage. Good examples of these solutions include the new ErisTerminal SIP desksets and cordless mobility solutions from VTech Business Solutions. SAFETY FIRST WHEN DRIVING WITH PETS Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

DINING OUT WITH CHILDREN
June 2-11 - Black Hills, SD - Mt. Rushmore
Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings.
June 19-25 - Myrtle Beach/Charleston, SC
Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better.
Aug. 31- Sept. 1 - Finger Lakes- Skaneateles Boat Cruise/Belhurst
Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.

Loves Earth Day! BY AMANDA DUDEK

harmful environmental side effects such as contaminated groundwater, toxic waste and radioactive residue, polluted air, water, and soil, not to mention human rights problems. Far from being biodegradable, these items commonly produce toxic e-waste at the end of their notoriously short life cycles, putting many at risk of exposure to over 1,000 harmful substances, including lead, mercury, nickel, brominated flame retardants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
022 marks the 52nd anniversary of the first Earth Day. Reported to be the world’s largest secular observance, Earth Day is expected to mobilize over 1 billion people participating in more than 190 countries (there are approximately 195) around the globe. This incredible, green global phenomenon came from humble beginnings, and like many positive and powerful ideas, it was catalyzed by the written word.
In 1962, Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring took the world by storm as it was quickly published across 24 countries. Concern over the impact of pollution on the environment, living organisms, and public health grew exponentially, blossoming into the modern environmental movement. With a strong, grassroots presence in local colleges, those early environmental champions chose April 22nd, 1970, to be the first Earth Day in hopes of generating the greatest possible student participation between spring break and final exams. This first Earth Day served as a rallying cry. “Groups that had been fighting individually against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife united on Earth Day around [their] shared common values,” states EARTHDAY.ORG. But it wasn’t just environmental groups that united. People from all walks of life, socioeconomic backgrounds, and political persuasions joined together to protect our precious planet. In short order, the United States Environmental Protection Agency was formed. A host of protective environmental legislation soon followed, including such groundbreaking items as the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. This early legislation has done immeasurable good in protecting us and all species that call Earth home. In the more than 50 years since it began, Earth Day has grown in scope and impact as awareness of environmental issues—as well as their importance—has skyrocketed worldwide. Today, over a billion people participate in environmentally focused activities each year, many taking advantage of increasing opportunities to volunteer around their communities and beyond. At the Penny Saver, we believe in being a part of positive environmental change. Print uses the energy of the brief touch of ink to paper compared to the 24/7 energy of digital counterparts. 4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
