Eating Out on Mother’s Day

Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is notagoodwaytocelebrateMom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained.

DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Creating Inclusive Joy: Inside Grow’s Spring Semiformal Dance

Sarah Mehta, a University of Rochester student, class of 2025, majoring in cell and developmental biology and minoring in public health, is founder/director of Grow for Adults with IDDs (intellectual and developmental disabilities), aiming to provide opportunities for people with IDDs to get together, try something new or learn something new, simply enjoying life with other people.

Grow hosted its first (hopefully annual) integrated Spring Semiformal Dance on April 12th near the U of R. “ is fun evening was a celebration fostering connections and breaking down barriers,” Mehta says.

Instrumental to coordinating this event along with Mehta was Grow’s Executive Board, comprising Navya Soogoor, Hana Zhang, Zoopash Jalal, Sara Mermel, Emily Chen, and Chrysolite Dhinakaran. eir dedication and tireless efforts, starting the planning as early as the fall semester, even before the board was fully developed, laid the groundwork for a memorable evening of inclusion and joy.

e Spring Semiformal welcomed around 120 attendees, including individuals both with and without IDDs, alongside volunteers whose support was invaluable. Mehta thanks Tim Baird, Julie Simone, and their team at Rochester Holy Childhood for providing crucial assistance, as well as the U of R’s Disability Awareness Club for decoration materials to help make the event magical.

Mehta’s personal connection to the cause, rooted in her brother’s experience with Down Syndrome, imbued the evening with a deeper significance. She says her brother always raves about these fancy galas he attends in Saratoga, NY, and Mehta wanted to create a similar experience for people in Rochester.

integrated event aimed to provide a platform for people with developmental disabilities to practice social skills and enjoy themselves.

“ e results spoke volumes, with so many attendees stopping by to express gratitude for the event, saying they had so much fun,” Mehta recalls happily. Mehta says the food and performances were fabulous and everyone who attended had a great time, so their goals for next time are simply to start preparing the space more in advance to alleviate the lastminute rush the volunteers experienced.

Beyond her roles as undergraduate student, teacher assistant, and as research assistant at U of R’s Spectrum Brain Lab, Mehta volunteers at Together Include Every Student (TIES), at U of R’s cancer/surgical center, and occasionally helps at the Ronald McDonald House.

Central to Grow’s mission is addressing the social disparities faced by individuals with IDDs. “Neurotypical people tend to have more friends, go out with people more o en, and generally be more social,” Mehta notes. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities, on the other hand, typically have fewer opportunities for such social interactions. is

She acknowledges her passion for working with people with IDDs, and says no matter where her medical career takes her, even if she doesn’t work directly with people with IDDs, she will surely maintain volunteer ties to help inclusivity flourish.

Mehta says, “We all should be more inclusive, accepting, supportive of everyone, no matter their abilities.” Grow’s Spring Semiformal “brought people together, with everyone having fun together as equals, showing that people with all abilities can do everything. We should make society as inclusive as possible.”

In a world striving for acceptance and understanding, organizations like Grow and events such as the Spring Semiformal serve as beacons of hope, reminding us of the transformative power of inclusivity and the joy that arises when all are embraced as equals.

To learn more about Grow and get involved, visit their Instagram @grow_rochester_ny or email the team at grow. rochester.ny@gmail.com. Together, let’s continue to create spaces where everyone belongs.

VENT BRIGHTER

There are good people out there!

Pharmacy disappointment

On Good Friday, I went out for a fish fry at a local well-known restaurant and had a wonderful meal. When the server asked me if I needed anything else, I said just the check. She said it’s been taken care of, along with the tip. I have no other way to say thank you to whomever did that, so thank you! I’m in my 80s and that’s never happened before, so I say there are good people out there!

Mustangs contribution to the Pop Up Pantry

I would like to thank Mrs. Auble and her students in the Entrepreneurship Class for collecting and giving food to the Pop Up Pantry in Dansville on April 15th. I was one of the fortunate ones to receive your bag of goods. It not only helped out my household but three other households that were in need of food. So, thank you again! An older Dansville citizen.

The large grocery store pharmacy I use in [local town] is always so backed up with customers. There is often a very long line inside at the counter as well as at the drive-thru window. I never use the drive-thru because of how busy it is, but the other day I decided to utilize it because there was only one car at the window. I was the first car waiting behind the car being serviced at the window. That car took 19, yes 19, minutes at the window! I did not have the option to leave because during the first few minutes of waiting, several cars (at least 7 or 8) took their place in line behind me. So I was stuck there. If there is an issue with an order that is taking that long, why can’t pharmacists ask the car/customer to pull around or come inside so that the other customers in line are not stuck for that long? I only decided to use the drive-thru that day because I was tired of waiting in line at the counter, and thought with just one car ahead of me it would be quicker. What a mistake. Animals in grocery stores and carts

I understand that many people love their pets like family. Pets, however, do NOT belong in stores where groceries are sold. Regulations are posted at the entrances of all of the groceries in our area stating that service dogs ONLY are welcome. Pets, therapy and emotional support animals are NOT service dogs!

The potential risk of contamination from fur, dander, or pathogens is a valid concern, especially concerning food items. These animals especially should be prohibited from being placed in carts. Pets may carry parasites and germs, as well as leave fur, dander andallergens, and a cart that held a pet is unsanitary! It concerns me that the management and workers do not enforce these rules.

HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT

Begin with training. One of the best things a pet owner can do for the wellbeing of a his or her dog is to ensure that it receives proper training from a young age. According to VetWest Animal Hospital experts, statistics show that owners who have pets that behave get more satisfaction and have stronger bonds with their pets. A dog that responds to basic commands can stay out of danger, and knowing what he is supposed to do can help the dog feel less stressed.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer

• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

Hang curtains. Curtains can help homeowners cut down on heating and cooling costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, properly hung draperies can reduce heat loss by as much as 25 percent. In the summer, curtains can block the hot rays from the sun from entering a home, reducing the need to turn up air conditioning units. While curtains won’t fix leaks or block hot or cold air from entering a home, they can serve as a buffer between a home’s inhabitants and the air seeping in through leaks.

CAUSES OF STAINED TEETH AND TOOTH DISCOLORATION

Stained or discolored teeth can result from food and beverage choices, poor oral hygiene, tooth trauma, certain medical conditions or treatments, and more. Sometimes tooth discoloration is unavoidable, but for many people it can be controlled with good lifestyle choices. The color of stained teeth depends on the cause. Yellow teeth result from poor oral hygiene and consuming dark foods and beverages. Brown teeth indicate tobacco use. Red wine drinkers may have purple-tinted teeth. Grey discoloration means the tooth’s nerve has died. Black spots usually indicate areas of severe decay. Discoloration can occur on the tooth’s surface (enamel) or in the tooth’s interior (dentin). Options for fixing stained teeth depend on the location and cause of the discoloration.

Teeth not looking their whitest? Smile not shining its brightest? Take care of your problem with a visit to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Stateof-the-art dentistry and a dedicated professional dental team make 6 Batavia City Centre the ideal place to achieve optimum oral health. Let us be your gateway to a smile you will be glad to show. Comprehensive family dental care is avaliable at our office, and a healthy, beautiful smile starts with a call to 585.343.4246.

P.S. White flecks on the teeth come from dental fluorosis, a condition caused by consuming high levels of fluoride during childhood.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Looking at the Causes Behind Mobility Issues

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 79 and can move around without any problem. I walk five days a week, and my weight is normal. However, it seems to me that many people -- some younger than I am -- have mobility problems. I wonder what causes this problem. Is it lack of exercise, genes, weight, etc.? -- E.G.

ANSWER: Be very grateful that you can move around without a problem, as most people in their late 70s do have mobility issues. The most common reason is osteoarthritis, but there are many causes, such as neurological diseases, cardiovascular issues and other types of arthritis. While it is true that not exercising can lead to poor mobility, most of the time, it isn’t a person’s fault that they have difficulty with mobility. Arthritis can happen to a person of any weight and at any level of exercise.

Exercise helps the vast majority of people improve their mobility, but there are exceptions. Many people with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome are intolerant of exercise, and overdoing it can lead their condition to worsen. This syndrome has also been known as systemic exertion intolerance disease. Well-meaning physicians, friends and family might have recommended exercise to a patient, which could have caused them to have a flare-up.

Although being very overweight increases the risk of arthritis, having a normal weight doesn’t prevent its development. Genetic influences are very complicated, but they also have a role in the development of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis can also come about as a result of significant trauma to a joint.

Here’s a Tip

* It’s tough to eat home-cooked meals as a single eater. Most recipes are geared for multiple portions, and you probably don’t want to eat the same thing for five days straight. Try this: Get together with some friends and have a potluck. Each guest brings an entree and at least two side dishes, in extra-large portions, and his or her own le overs containers. Split the food up amongst the guests, packaged as meals. Everyone can cook once and eat for a week.

* Did you have too much summer fun last year? Be ready to soothe that sunkissed skin this year with frozen aloe vera. Use an ice-cube tray to freeze aloe vera gel, and let the soothing begin!

PAW’S CORNER

How to Greet Other Dogs on the Street

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a sweet but somewhat rambunctious little mutt, “Karla,” who is about 13 months old. e problem is that she wants to jump and bark at other dogs when we’re out for a walk. How can I calm her down? -- Jen in Duluth, Georgia

DEAR JEN: Reactivity is natural behavior for a puppy that loves to play with other dogs, but of course, it’s not desirable behavior. Jumping and barking can trigger an aggressive response from some dogs, or stress out other dogs. It can scare humans.

Fortunately, it’s a behavior that you can moderate with a specific, daily training regime that will teach Karla to stay calm on the leash.

First, gather your tools: A sturdy leash that is about 5 feet long (no retractable leashes allowed), a harness and a pocketful of Karla’s favorite treats, cut into tiny pieces. I recommend the harness over a collar because it allows you to strongly control Karla if she starts jumping, without risking an injury to her throat.

Next, teach and reinforce three crucial commands: sit, stay and heel. From the moment you put on Karla’s harness and leash, to when you take them off at the end of the walk, she needs to follow your commands. Karla should sit calmly while you attach and remove the leash. During the walk, she should remain next to you, with a little slack in the leash. If she starts to tug ahead, stop, command her to sit and, once she sits, start off again, giving the command “heel.”

Keep the training positive, and remember that it will take time and consistency. As she learns what you expect from her, Karla will become a great walking companion.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

* A common issue with blood donation -- along with other types of charitable contributions -- is that if donors don’t know the recipient, it’s harder to convince them that donating is beneficial. Therefore, in an effort to encourage more young people to give blood, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, sends a text when their donation has been dispensed to someone in need, providing proof that it’s going to good use.

TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING

Invest in quality gear - In addition to the tent, campers will need a tarp/ground cover to place under the tent. This helps prevent moisture seepage from the soil. Next, determine how everyone will sleep, whether on the ground or in cots. Cots can be the most comfortable options, but they take up a lot of space and can be heavy to transport - which is less than ideal when backpacking to a campsite. Inflatable mattresses or sleeping pads can be used in conjunction with sleeping bags to provide a soft, cushioned surface. Some are affordable at $40 while others may cost as much as $300. Costlier options may be best for frequent campers.

HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC

Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establishing old routines also can return a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.

DISTRACTIONS THAT CAN AFFECT EFFICIENCY AT WORK

Smartphones: A 2015 CareerBuilder survey of hiring and human resources managers from various industries found that employers cited smartphones and texting as the biggest productivity killers in the workplace. Professionals no doubt recognize how distracting their phones can be during the workday, and they may feel powerless to avoid them. But they’re not. Alter notification settings so the phone only delivers the most important notifications (i.e., children’s schools, meeting reminders, etc.) during the day. Turn off notifications from news, sports and entertainment apps.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL

Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. Collegestudentsarenolongerjust young men and women who begin pursuing degrees right out of high school. In fact, the number of adults returning to the classroom has increased considerably, often making younger students the exception rather than the rule, says the college financial planner Straighter Line. According to the U.S. Department of Education, college students 25 years or older comprise 40 percent of all students enrolled in college.

Adults who are thinking about returning to school are urged to fill out the free applications for student aid to see if they qualify. Grants and scholarships may be available, and some workers find that employers may match funds or offer some assistance to finance job training courses.

Many schools now offer online courses that make it easier for working adults to pursue their degrees.

Many working adults are returning to school to pursue new or advanced degrees, as more colleges and universities are facilitating such pursuits.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB

Flexibility: Retirees may be looking to contribute to their communities or simply earn a little spending money, but they will likely still want the freedom to travel or spend time with their families whenever they choose. So flexibility is something to look for in a postretirement job. This is what makes consultant work so attractive to retirees. In-person hours may not be required of consultants, who can then offer their input while visiting their grandchildren or traveling the world.

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD

Emphasize networking. The Association for Talent Development reports that 57 percent of job openings are filled through networking contacts. Networking is more accessible than ever thanks to social media sites like LinkedIn, and women can utilize such resources to build connections with mentors and colleagues that can share everything from career advice to access to new job openings.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK

Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.
