AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS

Home Services ____________________30

RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills.

Hometown Events ____________________18

FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

1-855-681-3113 HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winbourne People who pick chili peppers in Costa Rica have to wear special suits to avoid getting blisters just from coming into contact with them.

Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Du t extraordinar circumstances… All orders that had been placed before the mandated closing will be fulfilled when the mandate is lifted. We appreciate all of our long time customers and look forward to serving them as soon as humanly possible.

Easter

It is strange in its very concept. Yet with Easter approaching in just over a week on Sunday, April 12th, it is possible that many of us will not be able to gather to enjoy our usual Easter festivities and traditions. Those who welcome the holiday with an Easter Service may only be able to do so remotely. Families groups may not exceed more than 10, and Easter egg hunts will likely be cancelled. Much like Seuss’s Grinch found of Christmas, however, what beats at the heart of Easter can never be stolen away. Easter is a time for celebrating rebirth. Rabbits, chicks and eggs all speak to its long-standing ties to the earth’s renewal each spring. It is also a deeply religious holiday for many. For Christians, it is a time to rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ the Son of God and His victory over death. For them, it reaches back to the foreshadowing found in the Jewish Passover, which is also observed around this time each year. During the Passover holiday, which takes place from April 8th-16th this year, those of Jewish faith celebrate their people’s historic and miraculous deliverance from slavery. In each celebration, there exists a common thread, the recognition of something we so badly need, especially in worrying times: hope. Rev. Henry Moore of the Hope Center in LeRoy has said that hope is “a confident expectation that believes tomorrow will be different, and more specifically, better than yesterday.” What an interesting definition and how personal! Recently, ending COVID-19 has been a hope that has united us both nationally and globally. While it is true that some have chosen a path of selfishness, many more have reached out to their neighbors in various ways, particularly through digital platforms, to offer support, supplies and simply to check in on the wellbeing of those around them. Many of us have been jettisoned, willingly or not, from the breakneck speed at which we usually fly through everyday life. With few places to go, more people are getting out into nature locally. You may have experienced seeing some of your neighbors for the first time, from a socially safe distance of six feet or more, of course, while checking out local hiking trails. This greater awareness will surely pull us closer together.

5 IDEAS FOR

Easter at Home Turn your home into a cheerful festival of spring. Encourage children to craft fun and colorful decorations for Easter. Watch their creativity and imaginations soar as they do! Enjoy your Sunday Easter Service remotely. Consider casting it to your living room TV and gathering your family together. Little ones may even want to dress up in their Easter finest. Hold an Easter Egg Hunt in your home. Get everyone in on the action by giving each family member different color eggs to hide and seeing whose eggs take the longest to find. Make favorite Easter dishes with your kids. Often in the rush to get everything made in time for guests, we are too hurried to teach our children cooking basics and importantly the stories of our family food traditions! Create a new family tradition. Traditions often come from significant events experienced together. Perhaps your new addition can reflect a way your family has bonded during this time.

In fact, now perhaps more than ever, it has become clear that our communities will continue to thrive when we cause them to thrive. Our local businesses will prosper when we go the extra mile for them. Our children will be successful students when we provide the extra support they need. In short, many Americans across our great nation are taking action. We are caring for our neighbors. We are buying gift cards and ordering takeout. We are engaging in our children’s education within our homes and are so thanksful for teachers. It’s beautiful to see! While there are still new COVID-19 cases across the United States, we know it is only a matter of time before we succeed in bringing this concern to a close. One of the best things we can do to care for our neighbors is to stay home as much as possible while connecting in other ways. Phone calls, video chats and uplifting social media posts serve as little points of hope, illuminating this dark sky. Some Easter traditions may be put on hold this year, but hope will never be one of them.

NOW’S THE TIME TO

TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.

You are all truly heroes! With all the chaos and uncertainty in the world concerning the corona virus, each one of you are on the front battle lines. You are all truly dedicated people, who, at the risk of your own lives, unselfishly forge by using disposable gloves and plastic newspaper tubes or other plastic bags to pick up and carry out what other careless folks have left behind. You can put your hand inside the bag, pick up other people’s trash without touching it, then turn it inside out and take it to the nearest garbage receptacle and dispose of it. looking at what people leave behind. In a time where so many are coming together and helping, being true hero’s, it is sad how some individuals can still be so ugly. Yes, that’s a strong word, but sadly true. Some people wouldn’t say hi or wave if their lives depended on it. They go out of their way to be the same disgruntled people they have always been. I don’t know how they can stand themselves! It could explain why they don’t have many, if any, friends. My mother and father always showed interest and genuine kindness in others. I was taught to treat others the way you would want to be treated. I would like to pass that advice to the above mentioned. Pregnant women should make dental checkups part of their prenatal care regimen. Between 60 and 70 percent of women experience “pregnancy gingivitis,” due to rising progesterone levels. As a result, there is an increase in the flow of blood to gum tissues, making them sensitive, swollen and more likely to bleed when brushing and flossing. Because this condition does not disappear after delivery, gingivitis should be treated by a dentist. In addition, a condition known as “pregnancy granuloma” (sometimes referred to as “pregnancy tumors”) may occur during the second trimester. It is characterized by painless purplish-blue growths that develop between teeth. Some disappear after delivery, while others require surgical removal to prevent a buildup of plaque.

Avoiding gum disease and achieving optimal dental hygiene success is not all that difficult. Almost everyone can do it with a modest amount of time invested daily. Keeping up with home dental care as well as scheduling periodic cleanings and wellness exams are two important steps toward accomplishing the goal of a healthy mouth. For full-service dental care for all members of your family, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. Our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Pregnancy granulomas, which are not actually tumors, occur in 2% to 10% of pregnant women.

They serve to alert medical personnel of potentially important medical conditions when someone is not capable of providing that information, whether due to temporary incapacity (such as being unconscious in a motor vehicle accident) or permanent disability (such as intellectual disability). In my opinion, the most appropriate use of these tags is when there is a potentially life-threatening medical condition that would not be obvious to emergency medical personnel. Some examples of these would include anaphylactic reaction to medications or latex; the presence of an illness that can cause temporary disability (epilepsy, diabetes, Addison’s disease); and medical conditions that might affect use of some common treatments, such as bleeding disorders, organ transplant status and medical implants (such as implantable defibrillators). Personal and contact information is a natural set of complementary information to have on a medical tag. Some newer tags include electronic information, but this is in its infancy. These include the use of near-field technology to let emergency personnel read the information (if they also have the technology); phone numbers the emergency personnel can call to get more information; and QR codes to allow emergency personnel with a smartphone to go to a webpage with more detailed information. Most smartphones also have the ability to store information that can be read in an emergency, even by someone without the person’s phone password. I recommend taking advantage of this feature. Many of the ID tags I see have information that is not likely to be helpful. Listing chronic conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol is not necessary. Finally, one of the biggest benefits of a medical ID tag is a little peace of mind.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Regarding a recent column: If a body does not need help in maintaining pH balance, why does the consumption of different foods cause changes in urine pH? -- K.F. ANSWER: The body has two main organs with which to regulate pH, the acid/base status of the body based on food intake, exercise, medications and other causes that would perturb the body’s pH, which is very tightly regulated and slightly alkaline at about 7.4. The more important and faster-acting is the lung. By increasing the respiratory rate, we excrete more carbon dioxide, which is in equilibrium with carbonic acid. Breathing more deeply and quickly can move the blood pH toward the alkaline side. This usually happens without our being aware of it. The kidneys are the other important organ for long-term regulation of pH. The kidneys can regulate reabsorption of carbonic acid in the tubule, increasing or reducing acid secretion. So, urine that is more acidic than normal may mean the body is ridding itself of excess dietary acid and thus making blood pH more alkaline. Ammonia is another way the kidney can regulate pH balance. Blood pH does not vary more than a minute amount from its expected level except in cases of critical illness, disturbances in kidney function or diseases that affect control of breathing.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

STAFFORD Cancelled - The Le Roy Stafford Senior Citizens will be cancelling our April 15th dinner as well as our planned trip to Del Lago Casino due to the instruction of conduct while we continue to navigate through this pandemic. We must do this to remain cautious and vigilant until we get through this terrible illness that is now plaguing our country. We are the most threatened generation at this time. Please follow for regular notification if we are able to resume with our May 20th dinner. If you have contact with any of our members in any way, please make them aware that the April events are cancelled. As usual, if you have any questions, please contact Rosemary Miller @506-5233 or Sharon Frost @768-6846.

Homeschooling Tips You may not have signed up to be a homeschooling parent, yet suddenly you find yourself teaching your child—or children—from home. Don’t worry! I believe you can help your child learn. As an experienced homeschooler, I offer you these tips for a successful homeschool experience!

Set your own pace: Your child’s school may have started classes at 8:00am, but 8:30am may work better for your family. That is okay! Design a consistent schedule for your child that works best for your family. Certainly, remaining in the ballpark of their start time will be beneficial when transitioning back, but do not feel restricted by the schedule they had.

Tree Service

Establish an Order: As trivial as it may seem, set and maintain an order in which your child completes his or her work. If your child completes math before social studies, he or she should do this every day. Not only does this lend consistency to the routine, it also helps you to know exactly what has and has not been accomplished on any given day.

Ask for Advice: Homeschooling has become a more popular option in recent years, and chances are you know a family who homeschools their children. Reach out to them and ask for tips. They are usually more than happy to share. A popular Facebook group called Homeschoolers of Greater Rochester NY has nearly 3,000 members and is another wonderful resource. National Geographic’s website offers homeschooling tips for families as well as offering resources for educators which parents may also find useful.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

Rolling walkers are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called “rollators.”

Aging Well With Exercise You can get better and stronger at any age. Research shows that an appropriate exercise program can improve your muscle strength and flexibility as you age. Progressive resistance training, where muscles are exercised against resistance that gets more difficult as strength improves, has been shown to help prevent frailty. Your bones want you to exercise. Osteoporosis, or weak bones, affects more than half of Americans over the age of 54. Exercises that keep you on your feet, like walking, jogging or dancing, and exercises using resistance such as weight lifting, can improve bone strength or reduce bone loss. More smart food choices for seniors

· Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. · Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned or frozen produce tend to be high in micronutrients, including a variety of important vitamins that are essential for all components of health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises eating dark green vegetables, such as leafy greens or broccoli, and orange vegetables, such as carrots and sweet potatoes. · Energy-boosters: Choose whole grains that can provide sustained energy by way of healthy carbohydrates over processed grains. · Bone-friendly foods: Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, can prevent calcium from being leached from the bones, which contributes to conditions like osteoporosis. · Digestive system-friendly foods: The digestive system slows down as the body ages, as the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thicken and digestive contractions that push waste along may slow down and become fewer. Foods rich in fiber can promote proper digestion by moving food through the digestive tract mor easily. High-fiber foods also may help naturally reduce blood cholesterol levels. · High-iron foods: Without enough iron in the body, a person may feel tired and lethargic from a reduced production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. A lack of oxygen in body tissues from anemia can be serious, says the National Council for Aging Care. Tofu, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and fortified breads and cereals are high in iron. Smart food choices can help seniors live long and healthy lives.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On April 11, 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of France, abdicates the throne and is banished to the Mediterranean island of Elba. Napoleon is credited with reforms that had a lasting impact on European society, including rights for all men and the end of feudalism. * On April 7, 1891, American showman Phineas T. Barnum dies in Bridgeport, Connecticut, at age 81. Barnum had requested that a New York paper run his obituary before he died so he could enjoy reading it, and the paper obliged. * On April 12, 1908, a fire at the Boston Blacking Company in Chelsea, Massachusetts, leaves 12 dead, 85 missing and presumed dead and more than 17,000 homeless. Due to high winds, a good portion of the city burned.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE TO THE OVER 50 CROWD: Hotels: Men and women over 50 may have extra time on their hands once their kids go off to college and then begin careers and families of their own. Many such adults use that extra free time to travel, which requires staying in hotels. Many hotels offer discounted rates to travelers over the age of 50. DID YOU KNOW?

Everything is blooming most recklessly; if it were voices instead of colors, there would be an unbelievable shrieking into the heart of the night. ~Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters of Rainer Maria Rilke

The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be upset about having to deal with problems that are no fault of your own. But you can turn the annoyance into an asset by showing how quickly and how well you can resolve them. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s fondness for tidiness pays off when you untangle a situation that seems hopelessly snarled. You might later be surprised to learn who will be expressing his or her gratitude. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you can tackle your assignment the way you prefer, it might be a good idea to at least ask for suggestions. Who knows? One or two might even turn out to be helpful. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make all the changes in your plans or proposals that you feel are necessary before -- repeat, before -- you submit them to your colleagues. You’ll come off looking more decisive that way. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might feel a mite intimidated in a new environment, be it a job, a classroom or meeting the future in-laws. But enter with a big smile, and everyone will see you as a real takecharge Cat. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This could be a romantic time for you if you can set aside your cynicism and let yourself believe that someone really cares. If you’re already in a relationship, expect your partner to be extra-loving. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to shed any doubts about your abilities. You’ve proved yourself in the past, so why not accept that you’ll do just as well, or better, in dealing with the new challenge ahead? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your suspicions might be on the mark, but unless you can prove what you assume, you need to exercise that Scorpion discretion and let events unfold without your assistance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful not to go over the top this week. Avoid overeating (especially of the wrong foods), or drinking too much, or working too hard. You can do it all, but in moderation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family matter is given to you to resolve because you have the gift for bringing quarrelsome kinfolk together. But while you’re playing Dr. Phil, don’t neglect your career obligations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone of importance shares your goals but disagrees with your plan to achieve them. Never mind. Defending your methods with logic and facts earns you admiration and respect. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Consider getting away, perhaps for the weekend, despite all the demands made on your time and energies. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle it all with your usual finesse. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sense of honesty that makes people believe and trust in you.( c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Tire alignment is a w ay to reduce w ear on tires and help avoid steering and “ pulling” problems. Bridgestone Tires defines tire alignment as an adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension, or the system that connects a vehicle to its w heels. W hen tires are not properly aligned, drivers may notice uneven tread w ear. M isaligned tires also may cause the vehicle to pull to the left or right. Drivers w ho notice their steering w heel is off-center or vibrating w hen they are driving may need to adjust their tires’ alignment. Camber, or the inw ard or outw ard angle of the tire w hen view ed from the front of the vehicle, w ill be adjusted. In addition, “ toe,” or the extent to w hich the tires turn inw ard or outw ard w hen view ed from above, w ill be adjusted. Caster angle also helps balance steering, stability and cornering. HOME IMPROVEMENT RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

How to Succeed at

Socially Distancing According to your Zodiac Sign Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): You love a little competition. Try out a new fitness regimen, like the Couch to 5k program, and plan a future race or marathon. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Your home always looks great, but a little re-decorating never hurt anyone! Pro tip: take pictures of each room on your phone first to get an objective view of what you would like to change. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): That good idea you’ve been sitting on? It’s time to come up with a stellar business plan. Don’t know where to start? Resist the isolating internet this time, and try emailing a local business leader you admire to set up a phone call – they would love to help, and the time to network is now! Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22): You hate the idea of avoiding the people you love, but they understand and really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. Get close instead to the authors that inspire you. Copy out a paragraph you especially love, then give the story your own spin. Have your family do the same, then compare your creations! Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): This is a time of opportunity for you. The stock market is on sale and you are not afraid to buy! Stay modest and share your passion for finance with the kids in your family by helping them set up virtual investment accounts through online games like Wall Street Survivor. Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your desire for organization is finally going to be satisfied! Make things more pinteresting by tapping into your creativity to develop some new DIY storage hacks. Marie Kondo has nothing on you! Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Your naturally social self will have to find expression in more creative ways. Start an initiative focusing on what can be done to help maintain the vitality of the small businesses in your area, like buying gift cards online or over the phone to use later on.

Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help

“flatten the curve” now! Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Everything is an argument nowadays! By sharpening your own debate skills, you might actually build bridges instead of burning them. Get started with a fun read like Mastering Logical Fallacies (Withey) before turning to the prisoner’s dilemma. Is it time for a career in politics? Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your professional success is borne of your energy and enthusiasm. Channel these traits into refreshing the space around your home, like a garden or deck. It might seem like slow going at first, but “it does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop” (Confucius). Your investment will be rewarded sooner rather than later. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Staying at home for you means expanding your reach! Move out of your comfort zone and organize friends and family to write cards for residents of the local nursing homes. The joy of small, random acts of kindness will spread to all areas of your life. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your bunker is filled with nothing but sheet masks, foie gras and red wine. Good thing, too, because the Metropolitan Opera is offering “Nightly Met Opera Streams” for free every evening at 7:30pm at metopera.org. If you’re fancy and you know it clap your hands! Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Now is the time to become the master chef you always knew you were! Make your meal plan, break out the cookbooks and get to it. Remember to take your time and enjoy the process. By offering to safely deliver meals to those in need, your culinary fame will only increase.
