GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and the time has come once again to begin searching for a gift for dear old dad. Father’s Day gift shoppers have long since abandoned the notion that a new necktie is what dad really wants, but finding a gift that expresses your love and appreciation for the old man can still prove somewhat challenging. Oftentimes, the best gifts are the ones that fulfill a need or want, and Father’s Day gifts are no exception.

THE TYPE OF LODGING ACCOMMODATION

Airbnb: A relative newcomer to the accommodations arena, an Airbnb is a residental property that hosts renters, often on a short-term basis. These may be private apartments, condos, homes, or vacation properties that owners temporarily sublet to travelers. While Airbnb is the name of a registered rental marketplace company (airbnb.com), the term often is used for any property that follows the same model, including options from companies like VRBO and HomeAway. Airbnb is an abbreviation that stands for “air mattress bed and breakfast.”

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES

Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

Adopting a Shelter Dog

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog?

— Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana

DEARJULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply.

There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies.

Here are some important questions you should ask:

• Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown?

• Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet?

• If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)?

Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines.

PAW’S CORNER

Bringing an old dog to heel

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A er my aunt passed away, I gladly agreed to take in her dog, “Hunter,” a rather squat, obese Beagle. He’s a happy old dog of about 9 years, but my aunt gave him little to no training other than housetraining. at makes walking him -- something the vet recommended I do twice a day, in addition to a diet -- a chore. Hunter will walk a few steps, then sit down and refuse to budge. When he does feel like walking, he either tugs the leash forward or lags behind. How can I correct this? -- James T., Plano, Texas

DEAR JAMES: Hunter is not used to the new lifestyle yet, and he’s reacting in a predictable way. He’s also out of shape and probably more stressed than you think. e first thing I prescribe is patience. e second thing I’d prescribe is persistence.

You’ll want to gradually lengthen his walks. Each day, always at the same time, put Hunter on his leash and start the walk. As soon as Hunter begins to lag or tug forward, stop walking, adjust the distance so that he’s standing or sitting next to you, and start again, saying, “Heel” as you step forward.

When he sits and won’t budge, encourage him to go a few more steps by giving him a very small treat. en turn around and go home. On your next walk, repeat this encouragement, going just a little farther. See what I’m getting at? Make each walk just a tiny bit farther.

As Hunter loses weight, learns to trust you and gains confidence on the leash, he will eventually pull you along. Time, patience and consistency will do the trick.

Adopted in October 2010 from the Batavia Animal shelter, our Pheobe has always been a frisky handful. But in her old age, she is quite a calm, loving girl. Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

ARE MEN LESS LIKELY TO PRACTICE GOOD ORAL HYGIENE?

Studies have shown that men are more likely to ignore their oral health than women. Women are found to have better knowledge about oral health and more positive feelings about visiting the dentist. Men, on the other hand, have fewer dental visits, lower opinions about their dental health, poorer flossing habits, and more resulting tooth decay. Women are more likely to receive preventative treatments, while men require more emergency dental visits. Because men receive dental care less often, dental professionals have fewer opportunities to connect with them about oral health, compounding the problem. One theory explaining why men are less likely to seek care suggests that needing to ask for help or care lowers some men’s positive perceptions of themselves.

As part of their healthcare team, we encourage all of our patients to make

the commitment to do what it takes to keep their teeth and gums in the best of shape. Problems with your oral health? Turn to our dental professionals for comprehensive dental care, from an assessment of your existing oral condition, to restorations, cosmetic dentistry, and suggestions for at home dental-care regimens. Whatever dental care you need, you’ll find it at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre, where all dental problems are dealt with efficiently, effectively, and compassionately. Hours by appointment; please call 585.343.4246.

P.S. Studies show that men are less likely to seek all kinds of medical care than women, not just dental care.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO

Makes 4 servings

4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.

To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Slower Heart Rates Are More Common in Athletes

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about a resting heart rate, specifically when it is considered too slow for one’s health. I am a 67-year-old male who, from an early age to the present time, has always been physically active every day. Now retired, I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I work out. The endorphin boosts and benefits to my body are my daily rewards. Recently, I received a fitness watch that tracks my heart rate. My nightly sleep sessions show a range of 39-58 bpm over the past month. During a dental visit a while ago, I was told by the hygienist that she knew of an athlete who died in his sleep, and his heart rate was so slow that it just stopped. Is this possible? -- D.M.

ANSWER: This really wasn’t a great thing for the hygienist to say, as there is very little truth to it. Most people who exercise do have a slower heart rate, and it’s a good sign of a healthy heart. However, some older people can develop heart block when the electrical impulse from the natural pacemaker of the heart fails to pass to the ventricles. This is an occasional cause of sudden cardiac death.

Your heart rate suggests, to me, that it’s more likely the healthy heart rate of an athlete than it is a disease of the electrical conduction system, but a visit with your regular doctor or cardiologist can separate this through a simple electrocardiogram in most cases. Some people just have slow heart rates, but they can be treated with a pacemaker if they’re symptomatic.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

CELEBRATE DAD AND SOME HISTORY THIS FATHER’S DAY

Father’s Day has been celebrated in one form or another since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Perhaps the most driving force behind Father’s Day was Senora Dodd, who thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Dodd wanted to honor the sacrifices that fathers make. Father’s Day was not formally considered a holiday until 1972, when a Congressional Act officially designated the third Sunday in June Father’s Day.

While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

Families celebrate Father’s Day in many ways. This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15. Dads who are history buffs may want to celebrate this year’s holiday by reminiscing about the notable events that have occurred on June 15 through the years. Here are just some of the many historical events that took place on June 15.

1752: Ben Franklin performs his famous kite-flying experiment to test the electrical power of lightning.

1775: George Washington is appointed Commander in Chief of the American Army.

1878: The first attempt at a motion picture takes place. Twelve cameras, each taking one picture, focus on horses’ hooves to see if they will leave the ground.

1887: The New York Giants baseball team beats the Philadelphia Phillies 29 -1.

1916: The Boy Scouts of America receives its congressional charter.

1918: An inch of snow falls in northern Pennsylvania.

1924: Native Americans are proclaimed U.S. citizens.

1934: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is dedicated.

1940: France surrenders to German forces as Nazi troops occupy the city of Paris.

1968: John Lennon and Yoko Ono plant an acorn at Coventry Cathedral.

1977: General elections are held in Spain for the first time since 1936.

1985: The Russian space probe Vega 2 lands on Venus.

1992: Vice President Dan Quayle famously misspells the word “potato”at a spelling bee.

2002: An asteroid misses hitting Earth by 75,000 miles.

2003: The San Antonio Spurs defeat the New Jersey Nets to win the NBA Championship.

2012: President Barack Obama indicates the United States will stop deporting some illegal immigrants.

2013: An estimated 40,000 residents of Piedra Negras, Mexico, are devastated by flooding.

COLD MEDICINE INGREDIENTS CAN RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE (NAPSI)—There’s

a reason it’s called the “common” cold: Adults have an average two to three colds per year and children even more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Problem

Most people recover from a cold within a week to 10 days. But decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications, according to the American Heart Association.

Read The Label

Be sure to read labels on over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have high blood pressure (HBP). Some contain decongestants such as oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine.

You should also look for warnings related to high blood pressure or HBP medication and talk to your health care professional before taking OTC medications or supplements. And don’t stop taking prescribed medications without talking to your doctor.

Some OTCs are also high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. So look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for the words “sodium” or “soda.” If you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources—and one dose of some OTCs can contain more than a whole day’s allowance.

Be Careful With Supplements Or Natural (Naturopathic) Remedies

Special pills, vitamins or drinks don’t substitute for prescription medications and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your health care provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised and may interfere with other medications. Some, like natural licorice and diet pills, can even raise your blood pressure.

What Else To Watch For

Other drugs and substances that can raise your blood pressure include:

• Alcohol

• Amphetamines

• Antidepressants

• Atypical Antipsychotics (such as clozapine and olanzapine)

• Caffeine

• Oral Contraceptives

• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, for example)

• Illicit Drugs

• Systemic Corticosteroids (for example, prednisone and methylprednisolone)

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS

New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible.

First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES

he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one.

Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group.

Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located.

Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed.

Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater.

Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project.

Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

* Lisa Jakub, who played teenager Lydia Hilliard in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” was kicked out of her Toronto school for taking the five-month-long film gig. When co-star Robin Williams found out, he wrote a letter to the school asking them to reconsider. School officials framed his letter, but didn’t change their mind about Jakub.

* A common issue with blood donation -- along with other types of charitable contributions -- is that if donors don’t know the recipient, it’s harder to convince them that donating is beneficial. Therefore, in an effort to encourage more young people to give blood, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, sends a text when their donation has been dispensed to someone in need, providing proof that it’s going to good use.

There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room.Insulatingproperlywillallow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort.

Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help controlfirebylimitingitsspread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity andpropagationofnoise.

[Local Town] PD Coverage

Thank you so much to the woman who stopped me and blessed me with gift cards at Wegmans. I have been through a rough time lately and this helped me get my medicine and a salad for lunch. You said it was “Just dollar amount” but to me that was more than I needed and then some. Please know I will pay it forward when I’m back on my feet! (Literally and figuratively.)

I understand there is a shortage in workforce. However, [local PD] is a 24/7 agency. At a time when public safety matters the most, [local PD] needs to uphold their 24/7 coverage. If necessary, this means [Chief] and [Sergeant] should be forced to cover any shifts that are lacking coverage regardless of the day, night or holiday since [local PD] is a 24/7 agency.

“BEE” Thoughtful

A man with a mission

Every day along Rt 21 or 5&20 near Canandaigua you will likely see a gray pickup truck stopped with orange cones for safety near it. You will see an individual picking up debris and garbage along the roadside. He is not on the payroll. He is a dedicated volunteer who begins his day early and ends his day late. I live on the same street as Malcolm and see him leave in the morning, come home for lunch and return to his mission until late afternoon. So when you see him along the roadside, give a quick two honks on the horn to let him know how much you appreciate his dedication to keeping things clean on our roadways.

As most of us have heard, pollinators are in a steep decline. As one thing you can do to combat this, many reputable garden centers are selling a variety of Mason Bee houses for your yard. Have you read what bee experts say about these houses? Do your research before installing one. Mason Bees are solitary. These bee houses offer a location where eggs are laid and hatch in the equivalent of a cramped tenement. Experts describe them as an environment where diseases run rampant, and they provide an easy target for predators of bees. It’s shocking that garden centers are promoting this trend. Please, before you add one to your garden, research what entomologists say about these houses.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS

Miles Davis (1926-1991):

Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learnedtoplaythetrumpetwithout vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

Oakfield graduate, Kevin Beuler, Returns as a Physician Assistant Dedicated to Community Health

In the heart of Oakfield, there’s a figure whose dedication to community health resonates deeply with locals. Meet Kevin Beuler, a Physician Assistant whose journey has returned to Oakfield serving in Family Medicine, reflecting not just a professional career but a profound commitment to his roots and the people he serves.

“Being an Oakfield grad, I am extremely biased,” he says, reminiscing about his alma mater. His journey started with a passion for medicine nurtured in his early teens, when he was interested in “being able to be in a revered occupation in which you can help others to then being in an occupation where you have to be able to absorb and understand so much information about the human body, diseases, medicines, and then be able to puzzle together a patient’s concerns, symptoms, lab results, and come up with an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan. It sounds crazy but I was one of those kids that loved school, loved the daily challenge, and continue to love the daily challenge a schedule of patients brings.”

A er graduation, Beuler pursued medicine, becoming a Physician Assistant in 2018 and practicing in a Family Medicine FQHC in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Content with his career choice, and happy with the multitude of lessons he was learning in his urban role, Beuler found himself yearning for the closeknit community he cherished back home in Oakfield.

roughout high school, he was deeply involved in the Drama Club, and he returned to play trumpet in their Pit years throughout college and even during his time in PA. Now that he’s back in town, he looks forward to giving more time to that program, as well as attending his brother Peter’s cross country and track events there.

medicine but actively shaping and improving healthcare delivery for the benefit of all.

Beuler’s also excited to be back in the area in his new role at Oak Orchard Health, where his role extends beyond diagnosing ailments. He collaborates with a diverse team to provide care for patients of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. His passion for minimizing delays in care and fostering a sense of comfort and dignity in his patients shines through.

Beuler’s career isn’t just about medical expertise; it’s about the connections he forges within the community. He says, “ is community [takes] a lot of pride in their health, which I admire, and [it] truly makes the bond stronger between patient and practitioner. But the community is also tight-knit, [which] gives a sense of treating patients of this community all like extended family, wanting to always do your best for each and every Uncle Phil and Aunty Sally.”

Yet, the road to community wellness isn’t without its challenges. Beuler recognizes the pressing issue of opioid dependence and the lack of resources for effective alternatives. He attempts to battle that challenge by emphasizing patient-

Beyond his profession, Beuler loves spending time with his wife, Brooke, and their two young daughters, and he says parenting provides extra special perspective that benefits his patient education. In his downtime, Beuler loves to read, watch movies, and take in shows at Shea’s. He enjoys keeping up with sports, especially football “to give myself the best chance to win my Fantasy Football leagues,” he says. And whenever they can, Kevin and Brooke enjoy date nights, and he says his favorite involve “racking up points at Dave & Buster’s.”

Kevin Beuler feels back at home, and he looks forward to the future in Western NY.

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)

Serves 4

1 pound morcilla blood sausage

1 pound mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, slivered

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons white wine

1 cup shelled spring peas

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

2 tablespoons mint oil

Mint Oil

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup chopped mint

Pinch of salt

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

WAYS TO ENJOY MORE DAIRY

Top off meals. Fruit salads, oatmeal or even a baked potato can be enhanced with low-fat yogurt instead of other fat-heavy or sugary toppings like whipped or sour creams.

Here’s a Tip

* D.B. in Minnesota has this to share: “When you are going fishing and only bringing a couple of lures, use an old, empty pill container. Holds well and you won’t get poked!”

* Oranges are wonderful treats and full of delicious fiber and vitamin C. Save your peels and stash them in a net bag hanging from your rearview mirror for just a day or two. As they dry, they give off the best smell.

* Need to take pills daily? Set a reminder on your cellphone. Most have alarm functions, and it works!

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls.

Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.

Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES

Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS

Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion. •␣Climbing •␣Certified
