Putting on a new face ….. Hopefully you’ve noticed our new masthead on our beloved Genesee Valley Penny Saver. All of our elements have remained intact, just with a new, bolder and modern look. The typeface has changed with an easier readable face that quickly identifies who we are. We also kept our mascot – the white horse, but with a closeup look. Clean, fresh and new, we hope you like it as much as we do! And now a word from our Design Team: This new logo was a collaboration between a few of us, but ultimately came together with one thing in mind. We want the face of our business to be fresh and relevant, work well across all platforms, all while honoring our popular Penny Saver. We chose a classic sans serif font that has stood the test of time, Avenir, and incorporated the Penny Saver horse with an ode to simplicity in design, all while staying true to our brand. Our hope is that this logo will lead us well into our next 70 years!

70th Anniversary Series- Volume 9 To go back in time in our history, in Vol. 4 we moved to a new, larger location in the Avon Town Plaza behind Tom Wahl’s. This was in the early 1980’s. We were so excited with 8,000 square feet of space to accommodate our growing number of employees, our expanding circulation and new and bigger equipment. We just KNEW this was it! No more moves! We settled in. Well, our good intentions of staying put were squashed within several years as we realized we were, once again out of room. Our next – and final move was to our current location in East Avon in the early 90’s. This provided us with 14,000 sq. ft., almost doubling what we had in our Plaza location. This was it! Still our business grew and we realized the need for more typesetters and graphic designers, and more equipment including a second printing press, bindery and inserting machines, and a system for shredding and recycling paper. The growth in our circulation area also warranted hiring more salespeople. Suddenly we were crowded again. So, over the course of the 90’s and early in the 2000’s we added on more square feet for additional sales and promo products space, additional bindery space, an area for carriers to pick up their Penny Savers and loading docks for the various suppliers who deliver to us each week. Our new, and final location grew from 14,000 sq. ft. to 27,000 sq. ft. as we added on to our building 5 different times! Our Production department, which takes up a large part of our building, produces approximately 147,000 of our own Genesee Valley Penny Savers and 30,500 other local Shoppers each week. The printing is done on two Royal Zenith Zephyr 300 printing presses; one with nine printing units and one with six. Each press averages about 20,000 impressions per hour. The production of the papers uses about 25,000 lbs. of paper each week. Our newsprint comes to us in 1,000 lb. rolls and is shipped from mills in Canada. We are very proud to say we are committed to recycling. A large shredder and bailing machine produces about 25,000 lbs. of scrap every three weeks. The 1,000 lb. bales of scrap are loaded into tractor trailers and returned to Canada where it is reproduced again as more paper. So, as you hold this Penny Saver in your hands, just think, you might have held some of it in your hands before!
To print the quantity we do each week takes a large amount of ink, both black and color. We use approximately 7,000 gallons of black ink each year, which is shipped to us 3 times a year in tanker trucks and pumped into a 2,000 gallon holding tank. The tank then pumps the black ink as needed to the presses. After the printing process, stacks of “signatures” (8 page sections of the paper) are loaded in page order into two Muller-Martini Saddle Stitchers. These machines collate, staple and trim our papers, at a rate of about 7000 an hour to their finished size. In our early days, this rather monotonous job was performed by a group of dedicated people who would stand for hours pulling Penny Saver sections out of wooden boxes and putting them together in order, by hand. Automation most likely saved these people from sore feet and legs and backs, and probably not one of them regrets losing their job to this wonderful machine. After the papers are put together, those with “inserts” such as grocery stores, drug stores, hardware stores etc. are moved to the insert machine. This machine automatically opens the paper and drops in the appropriate inserts depending on the area the customer wants to advertise in. After the inserting process is complete, the Penny Savers are bundled and labeled either for the Post Offices or the individual adult carriers and their routes. Carriers pick their papers up from our facility, and the copies that are mailed are delivered to the Post Offices by our truck drivers. It is an intense job that must be carried out in a limited amount of time!
Family owned and operated since 1948 …stay tuned for volume 10 next month

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

Planning an Outdoor Oasis (Family Features) - If it’s time to think about making some improvements or additions to your home, outside may be the best place to get started. D efin e th e Sp ace.An outdoor room could be the entire yard, or just a small part of it. Think about it having walls, a ceiling and flooring, just like an indoor room. • Walls are vertical elements that help define a space, such as hedges, trees, lattice screens, raised garden beds, railings, a gazebo or fence to frame your space. • Ceilings provide shelter and shade. Think of awnings, umbrellas and pergolas. Or use what’s naturally there, like the branches of a shade tree. • Flooring could be the existing lawn, a mulched pathway or a created floor such as a concrete or flagstone patio, or deck. Decide the Elements. Once you know where your oasis is, it’s time to figure out what needs to go in it. • Decking - A low-maintenance composite deck adds versatility and beauty that you can customize to meet just about any need. When planning a deck, don’t make the mistake of building one that’s too small. Mark the area you want to use, then put your outdoor furniture in it to see if you have the space you need. Use an online planning tool to explore designs, materials, colors and accessories. Be sure to check on local building codes and permits needed before starting any construction. Fire and Food. Use your outdoor room any time of day by planning a place to cook and eat. • An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a portable grill or as elaborate as your budget will allow. A DIY pizza oven can also be a fun way to enjoy cooking outside. • Fireplaces, fire pits and chimineas bring coziness along with great function - and they help extend the outdoor enjoyment in cooler weather. Accessories. Just like indoor room, outdoor rooms benefit from appropriate accessories. Make sure you plan for them in your budget as well as in your designs. • Lighting - Landscape lighting, lanterns, candles or strings of white outdoor lights can all add beautiful ambience. • Sound - Add pleasing audio with outdoor stereo sound systems, trickling water features or even just simple wind chimes. • Color - Garden art, tablescapes, container plantings and fabric can put colorful finishing touches on your outdoor room. WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Gutters and downspouts should be in good condition. A roof is the sum of its parts, and that includes downspouts and gutters. If the gutters are clogged or damaged, they cannot direct water away from the house properly. Snow, leaves and other debris needs to be cleared from gutters to help them function at optimal capacity.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

REVIEWS “The day after the work was completed in the basement sealing the wall cracks there was a pouring rain leaving inches of standing water on the ground. My basement was dry. No water on the walls or puddles on the floor. Very professional, respectful, courteous, and up front. Being a single parent grateful that you worked around my schedule. Thank you!”
“After more than 20 years of water leaks in our basement wall, the basement is now dry, with the humidity lower. I had another area that water would come in where the concrete floor met the concrete wall. I thought this type of leak would be complicated to correct. I was surprised how easily and fast this problem was solved. Great work!!”
Kathleen; LeRoy, NY
Arthur; Batavia, NY
“Bob and his crew were very professional in their work ethic and very customer oriented. We have a dry, useful basement that I can use worry free from water for the first time in 23 years.”
“Water that was seeping through block wall and up through cracks in the concrete floor was eliminated. With 2 weeks of steady rain the basement floor is completely dry and the walls look terrific. I recommend Waters Basement Services without hesitation.”

Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal. Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries. See and be seen: Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers. Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most. Slow down and give other motorists space: Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1/12inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains. Exercise caution with puddles and running water: It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways. Skidding: Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation. Maintain tires: Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles. Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A little woolgathering is OK. But don’t let that dreamy state linger beyond midweek, when you’ll want to be ready to take on new workplace responsibilities. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Love rules the week for single Bovines seeking romance. Attached pairs also find new joy in their relationships. Friday should bring news about a business opportunity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Home becomes the center of a new social whirl, as you show your talent for hosting great parties. You can expect to impress a lot of people who’ve never seen this side of you. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child might have to raise those powers of persuasion a notch to get a still-wary colleague to agree to go along. Finding more facts to back up your position helps. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Hold off trying to fix the blame for an apparent mishandling of a work situation. A full investigation could reveal surprising facts on how and why it really happened. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your ability to find details others might overlook gives you an advantage in assessing a possibly too-good-to-betrue offer. A trusted colleague has advice. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect to be called on once again to act as peacemaker in a long-simmering dispute that suddenly flares up. Offer advice, but be careful to stay out of the fray. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your organizational skills help you line up your priorities so that you get things done without added pressure. The weekend could hold a special surprise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) New ventures are favored. But don’t launch yours before rechecking all facts and sources. Also, be sure you can rely on support from certain people. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t be pushed into renegotiating an agreement, even though it might help avoid a potential impasse. Get legal advice before you sign or agree to anything. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Helping others is what Aquarians do so well. But this time, someone wants to help you. Expect to hear some news that will both surprise and delight you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Things go so swimmingly that you’re tempted to take on more tasks. Best advice: Finish what you have now, then enjoy a well-earned relaxing weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: Your understanding of human nature helps you make wise decisions that are appreciated by all. You would make a fine judge. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Grandparents called upon to raise grandchildren Older adults whose children have grown up often look forward to the next stages in life, which may involve retirement, downsizing and enjoying visits with their grandchildren. A growing number of aging adults may find themselves playing a key role in their grandchildren’s lives. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 2.7 million grandparents across the country are stepping into parental roles for their grandkids. Some assist their adult children while others have become the primary caregivers. Factors like military deployment, illness, incarceration, and substance abuse are forcing grandparents to take on responsibilities they may have thought were over. PBS reports that, between 2009 and 2016, the number of grandparents raising grandchildren in the United States rose by 7 percent. Although raising the next generation can bring about many rewards, including security, sense of purpose, a deeper relationship with family, and social interaction, there are many obstacles as well. That includes the financial strain that raising children can place on individuals unprepared for the cost of child-rearing. Census figures also show that about one-fifth of grandparents caring for children have incomes that fall below poverty level. Grandparents may be rusty concerning safety requirements & equipment now needed to care for grandchildren. As grandparents navigate the unexplored waters of raising grandchildren, there are certain factors they need to consider. Legal advice or advocacy - Certain circumstances may require grandparents to seek legal help so they can raise their grandchildren in lawful ways. If there is neglect, divorce, arrest, or other factors, it may be a smart idea for grandparents to seek the help of an attorney or advocacy group to clarify their legal rights and ensure access to grandchildren. In addition, grandparents may need certain legal documents, such as a power of attorney, citizenship papers, adoption records, or consent forms. Get educated - The rules have changed since grandparents raised their own children. It is important they learn as much as possible on child safety guidelines. Consumer advocacy groups or pediatricians can help explain how guidelines have changed. New furniture and toys may have to replace older, unsafe items.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.
More and more grandparents are stepping into parental roles for their grandkids.
Take care of yourself - Raising grandchildren can be emotionally taxing, especially if poor circumstances led to the grandchildren being placed with family. It is crucial to recognize feelings and one’s own health when caring for others. A grandparent who is exhausted or overwhelmed may not offer the appropriate care. Emphasizing one’s own mental and physical health is essential, as is getting help and advice when it’s most needed. The organization AARP recommends compiling a list of support services, such as respite care providers, counselors and support groups. Grandchildren will have feelings, too - Children, whether they are old enough to understand or not, may react to change differently. Some children may act out while others may grow detached. Grandparents can focus on providing stable environments and offer support and consistency even if grandchildren are withdrawing or pushing their loved ones away with words or actions. Raising grandchildren can be complicated, but it has become more prevalent. It can take time for these new family units to find their grooves. More information is available at www.aarp.org in their GrandFamilies Guide.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy MATERIAL DIFFERENCES IN IMPLANTS While titanium has been the traditional material of choice for dental implants, patients also have the option of a non-metal tooth-root replacement. Like its titanium counterpart, a “zirconia” dental implant is biocompatible, enabling it to be embedded in the jawbone, with which it bonds directly through a process known as “osseointegration.” Unlike a titanium dental implant, which consists of the implant and the “abutment” (to which the prosthetic tooth is attached), a zirconia dental implant is of one piece (combining the implant and the abutment). Zirconia itself is a crystal material that is best known for its likeness to diamond. While both implant materials are biocompatible, FDA approved, and considered safe, zirconia is for those who prefer a non-metal material. Wouldn’t you like to bite into a sandwich knowing your dentures
won’t slip? Go to sleep each night without removing your teeth? Smile with confidence? Implants may be the answer for you. Implants are an exciting tooth-replacement option that has changed the lives of many people. In fact, well over a million have been placed in North America alone. Are they for you? We welcome your call at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for a consultation about your future smiles. You can reach us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Because a titanium dental implant comes in two pieces, it allows for more control over a few elements of the entire toothreplacement process than a one-piece zirconia implant does.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I have worked in a loud facility for 35 years and have always worn protection and had my hearing tested annually. Several years ago, I had a threshold shift (a loss in my hearing range), and the plant nurse sent me to a hearing specialist. He said that my hearing loss is not due to noise exposure. I asked how he could tell, but I didn’t get a satisfactory answer. I later asked my primary care physician, and he didn’t know. How do you determine from the result of a test whether hearing loss is caused by noise exposure or other factors, such as illness or injury? Would a hearing aid be effective? -- J.G. ANSWER: A comprehensive exam and hearing testing can show whether the hearing loss is likely due to loud noise exposure, based on the pattern of hearing loss across different frequencies. However, I don’t think that there is 100 percent certainty about making or excluding noise exposure as the cause of the hearing loss from the pattern. I would think that an independent evaluation, by a certified audiologist and your own ENT doctor, might give you additional information, including a discussion about how much benefit you might get from a hearing aid. The Hearing Loss Association of America (on the Web at www.hearingloss.org) can provide you some support and guidance through this process. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My father suffers from GERD and takes medication for it. After returning from a recent holiday, I asked him about his symptoms. He replied that he was not bothered by heartburn for the 10 days he was away. You see, my father takes all his meals sitting on the couch, eating off of a low coffee table. Taking a bite, sitting back to chew, bending forward toward the table, over and over. It almost looks like he’s doing sit-ups while seated, and I think this must contribute to stomach acid pushing up. During the 10 days that he was away, he was sitting at a proper-height table when eating all his meals. What are your thoughts? He won’t listen to me, because I’m not a doctor! -- A.C. ANSWER: Believe me, being a doctor doesn’t mean people always listen to you. However, I do hope your father listens to you, because I agree with you that his eating position may contribute to mechanical acid reflux: The increased pressure from his bent-over position may be forcing acid up into his esophagus. However, being on holiday may lead to other reasons he was not bothered. Maybe he was avoiding foods that cause symptoms. Maybe he was feeling less stressed. It’s possible he ate earlier and went to bed a longer time after eating, which allows the stomach to empty so there is less acid at night, when more damage to the esophagus can occur due to the loss of gravity and swallowing. Sometimes several lifestyle choices are needed to address GERD. I always prefer to work on those before prescribing medication treatments, especially because the proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole have long-term side effects that are best avoided, if possible. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. By Phyllis Kravetz The award-winning Traveling Cabaret is happy to announce the addition of two talented performers, Mark King, of Irondequoit, and Jody Wilbur, of Canandaigua. Both performers bring enthusiasm, talent and extensive musical theater experience to the Traveling Cabaret. Mark King, an adjunct instructor at Rochester Institute of Technology, and Eastman Kodak retiree, has an amazing background performing with Opera Theater of Rochester, Greece Performing Arts Society, Off Monroe Players, Opera Factory, the Genesee Valley Chorus and the Irondequoit Chorale. Mark’s strong and melodic tenor voice blends well with the eight current members of the musical revue troupe. He is dedicated, eager, rarin’ to go, and with a sparkle in his eyes, has a quick and fun sense of humor. Mark related, “I’m excited to be singing with such a talented, fun and friendly troupe. It is very rewarding to bring smiles on the faces of our audience members.” Jody Wilbur is a Lifestyle Coordinator and Event Planner at Clark Meadows at Ferris Hills, an Enriched Living Facility. She is the Choral Director of the Meadowlarks Chorus, and has performed with the Midlakes Melody Ladies Barbershop Chorus. Jody loves singing, has an extensive dance background, a witty sense of humor, is energetic and animated, and possesses an engaging smile. Anxious to perform with the Traveling Cabaret, Jody stated, “I am privileged to be part of this very talented and fun group of singers and dancers. The Traveling Cabaret is a breath of fresh air, and brings such joy to audiences.” Both Jody and Mark are excited to be the “new kids on the block”, and are working diligently, rehearsing every Monday night in Irondequoit, practicing new musical numbers and dance steps. They are enjoying the camaraderie of fellow Traveling Cabaret members, and conversely, the troupe is overjoyed working with them. Both Jody and Mark are excited to debut their talents as “official” Traveling Cabaret members. The cabaret troupe is delighted that both Jody and Mark have joined the group, and unanimously felt that the two would fit right in! The Traveling Cabaret is a 10-member Broadway, movie and pop song, dance and comedy musical revue troupe. Cast members include Mark Battaglia, Bob Dietch, Mark King, Roseann

Kraus, Dick Lawrence and Linda Maloney, of Irondequoit, Steve Tylock, from Penfield, Phyllis & Sandy Kravetz, of Perinton and Jody Wilbur, from Canandaigua. “Born on the 4th of July,” 1990, the 28-yearold not-for-profit Traveling Cabaret troupe performs 12 months of the year throughout the greater Rochester area, and surrounding communities, for open-to-the-public and private events. Fifteen to 25 musical revues are performed annually. From January through November, Broadway, movie and pop revues are performed, and Holiday shows are scheduled in December. Colorful costumes and props are added throughout the fast-paced shows; performances are appropriate for all ages. In return for quality and fun entertainment, the Traveling Cabaret raises money for student scholarships and charities. Each year, scholarships are awarded to deserving and talented college-bound high school seniors pursuing the Arts upon graduation. Various charities also benefit from Traveling Cabaret donations throughout the year. To date, over 515 cabaret shows have been performed; the Traveling Cabaret’s milestone 530th performance is forthcoming. Thirty-one grants have been awarded the Traveling Cabaret recognizing its contributions to the quality of life in the community.
