STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR

Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale.

Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot.

Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt.

Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person.

Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

Check expiration dates. Gift certificates and cards for particular stores or services are popular come Mother’s Day. But it is essential to check expiration dates on the certificates or find gifts, as there is a good chance Mom will put off pampering herself and you would not want the gift to expire before she has a chance to use it.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS

The Relaxation Specialist

Of course, some mothers may want to simply unwind with a relaxing morning at the spa on Mother’s Day. In fact, the 2018 U.S. Spa Industry Study found that the spa industry has enjoyed seven consecutive years of consistent growth, with more than 187 billion spa visits in 2017 alone. A relaxing morning at the spa can be the perfect way for moms to begin Mother’s Day before they enjoy a brunch of dinner out with their families.

UNIQUE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS

Dining out can be a treat. A meal at a favorite restaurant can be a welcome change from kitchen duty. Mother’s Day is a busy day for restaurants, many of which have limited menus to better handle the crowds. As a result, if dining out on Mother’s Day, Mom may not get the full menu she desires. To ensure mothers have full menus at their disposal, gift givers can cook a meal at home on Mother’s Day and then choose another day of the week to enjoy a meal in an upscale restaurant.

I’m of the opinion that life would be more enjoyable if people learned to meet others where they are. e dog owner clearly doesn’t want to pick up her dog’s poop, and I don’t think checking with an HOA or municipal ordinance will change that. Maybe she has mobility issues. e writer says she and her neighbor “get along ne,” and there’s a LOT to be said for that. If I were her, I would simply buy poop bags and clean up a er the dog. If the neighbor sees her and says something, I would say: “I’ve asked that you pick up a er your dog, but I don’t want that to become a big issue between us because we get along so well. Your friendship means more to me than my taking a few minutes to clean up the driveway.” -- Susan W., via email another reader shares their advice:

I have had this issue several times in the past. I have successfully resolved this issue every time it has come up.

Josie is a rescue cat. She has been a part of our family for 1.5 years and provides great comfort and joy! She loves to watch the birds from the house windows. She also likes to play fetch with her pink stuffed mouse. We throw the mouse and she always returns it to us. She has a sparky personality and always wants to be the favorite cat in the house.

I used a new tool to solve it -- the power of social media. My solution was simple: When I observed an individual allowing their canine to defecate on my property, I announced loudly from my front door that if they did not clean it up, I would locate their property and defecate on theirs as well. I made the same announcement on the neighborhood’s Facebook page.

Aside from the occasional beer can thrown out of a vehicle full of teenagers, we have been at peace.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Determine the charging time of your vehicle. The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV,confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

I’ve read a lot of plant packages saying plants are deer-resistant and then the deer come through during winter and decimate them anyway. How do I know which aredefinitelydeer-resistant?

Although a plant may be marketed as deer-resistant, unfortunately, deer are curious and hungry creatures. Mothers and fawns, especially, are known for their voracity and their tendency to nibble many plants as they move along a landscape. The

result is that a planting of young pawpaws or currants, both marketed as “deer-resistant,” might have all the leaves chewed off overnight. After eating a “deer-resistant” plant, an individual deer may feel sick or realize (after a few big bites) that they don’t like the taste of the leaves. If the plant is small to begin with, it may be already dead after being munched. And there will likely be more, unfamiliar deer that also need totastetheplanttocometothesame conclusion.

The only sure-fire solution is to use netting while the plants are small. Some have suggested planting allium crops around young plantings, as deer don’t like the smell. But, I think physically blocking the plants from deer will workbest. If youareabletogrowthe “deer-resistant” plant out to a large

enough size — perennials usually reach this stage around 2 or 3 years –you can let deer graze on it and learn theirlessonwithoutworryingthatthe plant will die from its leaves getting eaten off.

HOW THE HELP OF A WORKER CONSOLED AND COMFORTED ME

Rosemary was a woman at a receptionist desk in a waiting room adjacent to the surgical area at Rochester General Hospital. I had accompanied my wife to this surgical area about 1PM a week back. After she was checked in for surgery I went to the waiting room. About 1 1/2 hours went by and I got nervous since I did not know anything. I asked Rosemary as she was about to leave work if she could get me any information on my wife as it was now 2:30PM. She made a call and all she could find out was that my wife was taken in for surgery a little over 1 hour 15 minutes prior. She could tell that I was very nervous. She stated she would make another call to see if a message via phone could advise of how surgery was going and when it might be done. She then stated that she would not leave until a call came back. That call came back at 3:30PM. Rosemary found out that surgery was going well and would be done within 2 hours. As Rosemary left she gave me two free passes for valet parking.

Favoritism by coaches in sports

It never ceases to amaze me how some sports coaches do not have a transparent process that is fair and based on prior performance (goals, batting average, runs, TD’s, tackles, etc). If a player is close friends with the coach, they are almost a “shoe in” to make the team. Also, why is it that the coach’s son (no matter their level of skill) always makes the team? As a parent who has multiple children that are all good athletes and starters in multiple sports in high school and college, I’m frustrated having observed numerous acts of favoritism, which leaves good character athletes on the bench or off a team. Especially disappointing is watching senior athletes in high school sit the bench as coaches play freshman or sophomore players. It’s unfair to constantly sit a senior who will soon graduate and never have the chance to play in high school again. It would be nice to see more transparent, communicative, and equitable player selection and give all players an opportunity to play.

Some people may receive the Pennysaver sooner than others, so the item may already be gone when you see the ad. That is fine, but it only takes the same few minutes to respond as it took to put the ad in. I was very interested in an item and responded more than once, but never received an answer. Thank you.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Medication Used for Perimenstrual Asthma Poses Health Risk

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 55-year-old perimenopausal woman who developed asthma a few years ago. My symptoms always start right before my menstrual cycle. My doctor ruled out allergies as the cause. I used to get colds and sinus infections premenstrually in my younger years. Most medical practitioners don’t see the correlation between hormones and respiratory symptoms. I sometimes take 10 mg of prednisone when I’m wheezing more than usual, and it seems to help. Is this dose putting me at risk for diabetes if taken regularly? -- B.S.

ANSWER: Perimenstrual asthma is a wellrecognized condition that is nevertheless not well-known by most nonexperts. It is less likely to be caused by allergies and more likely to be aspirin-sensitive -- meaning that aspirin, or other anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen) commonly taken by women during menstruation, can trigger an asthma attack. Maybe a quarter of women with asthma have perimenstrual asthma. As you say, it is thought to be the hormone changes around menstruation that trigger the asthma.

REVERSING GUM DISEASE

Gum disease, also called gingivitis, happens when gums are chronically inflamed and infected. Common signs areswollen, tender, andbleedinggums. Gingivitis is sometimes called early gum disease, and it can be reversed with proper oral care and maintenance. Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis, and is not reversible or curable. It happens when the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets thatcausebonelossandrootdamage. If you are in the early stages of gingivitis, it’s not too late to improve your oral hygiene and reverse the disease. The best ways to both avoid and reverse gum disease are brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and having dental cleanings every six months.

Cavity-causing bacteria and its resultant damage can be controlled if

we deal with bacterial plaque activity on a daily basis. A toothbrush alone, however, no matter how often used, cannot do the whole job. It takes the combined effort of smart eating, conscientious daily brushing and flossing, and professional visits to promote total oral health as well as complete body health. If it’s been too long since you treated your teeth and gums to professional care, now would be a good time to call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment (585.343.4246) at 6 Batavia City Centre. We create great smiles!

P.S. Advanced periodontitis can cause tooth loss, and the bacteria associated with the disease can lead to or worsen a number of serious health conditions.

www.bataviafamilydental.com

Oral contraceptives used continuously prevent large changes in progesterone and estradiol, and may be helpful in managing perimenstrual asthma. Although I didn’t find a lot about it in literature, I suspect that when your periods stop, your asthma symptoms will get better.

Increased medication at the time of menses is frequently needed. However, because prednisone, even at the fairly small dose of 10 mg, does increase risk of diabetes, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, glaucoma, cataracts and many other conditions, oral prednisone is not my first choice for medication in this situation.

Inhaled steroids would be one choice, but they take a while to begin working. One recommended treatment is the oral medicine montelukast (Singulair), which has been proven effective in a small study and starts working right away.

DID YOU KNOW? Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE

Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

Green Warsaw Celebrates 1st Arbor Day with Tree Planting Event

Earlier this year, a group of local residents in Warsaw, NY, founded Green Warsaw, a volunteer-run community tree board that hopes to bring more trees to the Village of Warsaw. Green Warsaw is connected to other community teams around the Finger Lakes region through the Color Your Community Green network, facilitated by the local nonpro t organization, Climate Solutions Accelerator.

Within just a few months, the Warsaw Tree Board has become a part of the Warsaw Village Board and received an Arbor Day Quick Start Grant from the NYS Urban Forestry Council, with additional funding from the USDA Forest Service.

To commemorate this year’s Arbor Day on Friday, April 28th, Green Warsaw hosted its rst Arbor Day Tree Planting event, which was attended by roughly 100 residents of the Warsaw community. During the hour-long event, community members gathered to plant two trees in Warsaw Village Park.

e rst tree was planted in memory of the late Steve Baker, a beloved Warsaw community member who taught at Warsaw Central Elementary School for 19 years. e second tree planted was dedicated to Mayor Emeritus Joseph Robinson, who recently retired a er 16 years of service as Mayor of Warsaw.

“We are very pleased with the turnout and how smoothly the event progressed,” shared Suzanne Coogan, a member of the Green Warsaw team. “ e tree memorials for Mr. Baker and Mr. Robinson are signi cant for us all.”

In addition to the tree memorials, the event hosted a “PoeTree” contest, where elementary students from Warsaw Central Elementary School were invited to write a poem about trees. Four students received the PoeTree Award and recited their poems at the event.

Attendees of the event included Emeritus Joseph Robinson and former Deputy Mayor Cynthia Appleton; current Mayor Dan Burling; Department of Public Works Superintendent Shane Evans; Je rey Souder, Liaison to Assembly Member David DiPietro; Gregg Torrey, Aide to State Senator George Borello; Department of Environmental Conservation Forester Nate Morey; and many of Steve Baker’s family members.

Green Warsaw shared that the tree planting event was the rst of many events to come. With dedication and a passion for the local community, Green Warsaw hopes to acquire the Tree City USA Growth Award in the future. As a volunteer-run organization, Green Warsaw seeks local residents’ support and connection to help protect the Warsaw environment.

Green Warsaw’s Mission

While bringing more trees to the Village of Warsaw is an aesthetically pleasing project, Green Warsaw shares that trees o er much more than their beauty. For example, it is argued that cars drive slower on streets lined with trees, potentially due to the calming e ect trees can provide. Trees also provide residents with a physical bu er from car tra c. is is signi cant in terms of overall pedestrian and biker safety.

Residents are o en more likely to go for walks on streets with trees, as the pleasant environment welcomes natural beauty and maybe even some shade on a warm summer’s day. Getting outside for fresh air can do wonders, and even a short stroll down the street can make a good day that much better. Tree-lined streets can also feel quieter, as cars may drive slower and trees absorb much of the tra c noise.

e increase in foot tra c is highly bene cial for local businesses located on tree-lined streets. More pedestrians mean more opportunities for businesses to grow, which in turn directly impacts the local economy. Tree-lined streets also positively impact property value, making a town more pro table.

Finally, tree-lined streets are great for improved air quality, which is bene cial for everyone. Between the safety, health, and economic bene ts street trees provide, it is no wonder Green Warsaw is passionate about the work they do and their mission to bring more trees to the Village of Warsaw.

Get Your Garden Growing: Four Tips for Starting a Garden (Family Features)

1. Know the Lay of the Land - Assess the gardening conditions in your yard before you dig your first hole or plant your first seed. Conditions such as sun, shade, soil type, climate and moisture levels are all key factors to consider when creating your gardening plan.

2. Prepare Your Soil - Healthy soil translates to better plant growth, so be sure your soil has the nutrients it needs to flourish. Talk to a representative at your local home and garden center for tips on choosing the right type of fertilizer based on the soil and the plants you’re growing.

3. Choose and Care for Plants Expertly - Once you’ve prepared your gardening space, you can begin to explore plant options available. To prevent the discouraging cycle of trial and error gardening with new plants, try Black & Decker’s new PlantSmart digital plant care sensor, a revolutionary gardening tool that provides expert advice for growing and maintaining all types of plants and flowers, both indoors and out. Its reusable, waterresistant sensor uses patented technology to measure key environmental information from sunlight and temperature to moisture, soil conditions and more. Your readings are then uploaded to your personal PlantSmart online account and combined with real-time climate and horticultural information from your local area, for a foolproof gardening experience. This tool will help ensure you are choosing and growing the right plants in your new garden.

4. Take the First Dig - When you’re ready, dig a hole that is slightly bigger and deeper than your plant’s roots, and gently place the plant in the prepared hole. Pat the surrounding soil down firmly, but don’t pack it, and be sure to leave enough space between plants. If using seeds, refer to the package’s directions to gauge the soil depth needed for proper growth; drop the seeds in and place soil firmly on top.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE

For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions.

The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.

A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage.

Songbirdsalsowilladdcharactertoayard.TheAudubonSocietysuggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE

Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* My mom was dealing with a rough health patch recently, and my dad was in charge of all her doctor visits. There was a lot of follow-up to keep track of, and many different doctors. He used a wallet-size photo holder to corral all the different appointment cards to put them in order of appointment. He really did a great job, and Mom’s all better now.

DAY TRIPS SENIORS CAN ENJOY

Wine tasting: A recent study from Wine & Vines magazine said there are 8,391 wineries in North America, and that number is on the rise. One is likely to find a winery to visit and sample the wares close to home. Make a day of it by bringing a picnic lunch.

* A fast, cheap and effective treatment for leg cramps is drinking a little bit of pickle juice. I’m not sure if it’s the vinegar or the combination of vinegar and salt, but it works -- and fast! My grandpa told me about this, and recently I have seen it in magazine articles and on television shows. Nothing fancy, just take a big slug of the juice at the very first sign of a cramp. -- E.E. in Maine

* Here’s a tip for brides: For the couple of weeks before your wedding, wear your wedding shoes around the house several times a week. This breaks them in, and you will be more comfortable with all the standing and dancing on your special day!

* I think cleaning wipes are so very handy, but they can be quite expensive. To make my own, I add cleaner to baby wipes, right in the container. I don’t have babies in the house, but I do mark the container well so that nobody would use it for his or her skin. They work well for me. -- via email

* To thread a needle, run the tip of your finger and thumb over a stick of lip balm, then roll the end of the thread between your fingers. It keeps the threads together and goes through the eye of the needle much easier.

* On May 20, 1506, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus dies in Spain. Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world’s size, calculating that East Asia must lie about where North America sits on the globe.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY

Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK

Change your hours. When possible, explore flex time with your employer. Getting to work before everyone, or coming in later and staying after traditional hours can lead to greater productivity. There will be fewer distractions and less rush-hour traffic, and you can reap a greater sense of accomplishment. Consider working a weekend day and taking off during the week. Then you’ll have the added benefit of getting personal tasks done while others are at work.

WOMEN AND STEM

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence.

According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas.

The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce.

Astheeconomycontinuestoimprove, jobprospectsfollowsuit.According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects.

Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress.

The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.
