Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

Switch from a traditional lock and key to a lockbox. Individuals who travel frequently can take a page from the realtor notebook and switch from a traditional lock and key lock system to a lockbox. Lockboxes require that a code is entered before a box containing a key can be unlocked. Homeowners who want this added measure of protection don’t even need to put a key inside the lockbox, which typically covers a lock, making it extremely difficult for potential thieves to pick the lock.

How can I improve the fertilityofmygardensoil?
The secret to a garden’s vitality lies within the hidden depths of its soil. To enhance the fertility of your garden soil, it is crucial to nourish it with a diverse array of nutrients and organic matter. One way to achieve this is through the magical art of composting. Composting is a transformative process where organic materials such as kitchen scraps, yard waste, and even fallen leaves are broken downbymicroorganismsintoarich, dark, and nutrient-dense soil amendment. By incorporating this black gold into your garden beds, you infuse the soil with a wealth of organic matter, enriching its
e
texture, improving its water retention capacity, and providing a buffet of nutrientsforyourplantstofeastupon.
Another method to boost soil fertility is through the use of cover crops. These green companions serve as living blankets, protectingthesoilfromerosion, suppressing weeds, and fixing nitrogen from the air into a usable form for plants. Cover crops, such as legumes like clover or vetch, can be sown between growing seasons or in fallow areas of your garden. Once they have fulfilled their duty, they can be tilled into the soil, adding organic matterandnutrientsastheydecompose. In addition to compost and cover crops,
incorporating organic fertilizers can also work wonders for your soil fertility. Organicfertilizerscomeinvariousforms, such as well-rotted manure, bone meal, fish emulsion, or seaweed extract. These natural sources of nutrients provide a gentle and slow-release supply of nourishment to your plants, promoting healthygrowthandabundantyields. It is important to note that soil fertility is a dynamic process that requires ongoing care and attention. Regularly testing the pH level of your soil can help you understand its acidity or alkalinity, allowing you to make necessary adjustments to create an
optimal growing environment for your plants. Additionally, rotating your crops each season can help prevent nutrient imbalances and the buildup of pests or diseases, ensuring the long-term health andproductivityof yourgarden. So, as you embark on the journey of improving soil fertility, embrace the beauty and complexity of this hidden world. With a blend of composting, cover cropping, organic fertilizers, and thoughtful cultivation practices, you will create a soil ecosystem that teems with life and provides a nurturing foundation foryourgardentothrive.

How doyouknow astrawb ry isripe?
At least three-quarters of a ripe strawberry should be red instead of green or white. Furthermore, a ripe strawberry will feel soft, and will gently give when squeezed.
Strawberries are members of the rose family. They come in all kinds of colors. Red, blue, white, yellow, black, and purple ones, too!

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.
Portable vs. Standby Generators
Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.
• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.
• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.
With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.
Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for color overload or just a small focal point of vivid color? Remember, using bold color doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold color display. Otherwise, rely on bold colors to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim.

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementiacanbebeneficialtobothdementiasufferersandtheircaregivers.
Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.
HEEL
is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

DEAR DR. ROACH: Why can’t people see an allergist and get desensitized to a peanut allergy? As a child, I was allergic to dust, pet hair, milk and other things, but I received treatments. I am not bothered by any of these now. It would seem prudent to desensitize people who have allergies that are life-threatening, like peanut allergies. -- S.S.
ANSWER: Allergy immunotherapy continues to be a commonly used and valid treatment for many allergies, including environmental allergies, insect venom allergies and, more recently, food allergies. The treatment can be used for peanut allergies, but it is certainly not perfect. So, it isn’t used very often.
The goal of immunotherapy is to get a person to tolerate the allergen that they have an allergic response to. This involves giving very tiny amounts of the allergen below the level that would trigger an allergic response. Over time and under extremely close observation, the amount of the allergen is increased. For allergens like pollen, they are typically given by injection under the skin (or by drops under the tongue), but for food allergens, they are given orally.
For peanut allergies in particular, reactions are common during oral immunotherapy. For about 1 dose per 1,000 under supervision in an allergist’s office, emergency treatment with epinephrine was required. Even during maintenance therapy at home, a reaction occurred 3.5% of the time, requiring treatment with 0.7% of all doses. Although oral immunotherapy is effective at getting people to tolerate peanuts, the effectiveness is not long-lived, with only 13% of people still being able to tolerate a peanut challenge three years after discontinuing maintenance therapy. (Thirty-seven percent of people who continued maintenance therapy were able to tolerate the peanut challenge.)
Until there are significant improvements in outcomes, I am unlikely to recommend oral immunotherapy for people with peanut allergies, unless they are unable to effectively avoid exposure to peanuts and they continue to have repeated reactions. Whether they’re on immunotherapy or not, patients are still advised to continue careful avoidance and have emergency treatment immediately available.
A new treatment for food allergies was just approved by the Food and Drug Adminstration. Omalizumab works by blocking the immunoglobulin IgE, which is critically important in allergic diseases.
The study showed that 47% to 80% of subjects who were treated with omalizumab for four months (given by injection every two to four weeks) were able to tolerate a standard dose of the foods that they were allergic to (peanuts, plus at least two other foods).
However, it appears that the benefit of the treatment does not persist after the treatment is discontinued, and it is intended for use in conjunction with food allergen avoidance to protect against accidental exposures.
In the future, combining this new medication with oral immunotherapy could be superior to using either alone, and it can help prevent serious or fatal allergic reactions from inadvertently being exposed to peanuts. Further studies are addressing this issue. ***

Crowns are traditionally used to repair damaged molars by covering them with a protective cap that mimics durable tooth enamel. While less common, a front tooth may also receive a crown when damaged from decay or trauma. Significant tooth decay, moderate to severe damage from trauma, and root canals are all reasons a front tooth may require a crown. While root canals on front teeth are uncommon, they are simpler than a root canal on a molar. There are full crowns and partial crowns (called onlays), which are used when teeth have less damage. Full crowns cover the entire tooth and require the tooth to be filed down before placing the crown. Onlays only cover a fraction of the tooth.
We will be glad to discuss crowns, onlays, and other options
available to keep your smile a beautiful, happy one. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we believe in an informed patient, and we promise to provide you with information regarding all aspects of your dental care. Our goals are the same as yours at 6 Batavia City Centre—a healthy mouth and a brilliant smile. Call 585.343.4246 for an appointment.
P.S. Front tooth damage can often be repaired with a dental bond, but when the damage is more significant a crown is needed.

John L. Mullins
March 28, 2024
We Have Lost a Cowboy. Services for John L. Mullins, 89, will be at 11am Saturday, May 25, with calling hours 5-8pm Friday, May 24, at Batavia First United Methodist Church, 8221 Lewiston Road, Batavia, NY 14020. Burial will be in Western New York National Cemetery in Corfu, NY, at a later date.
John Leslie Mullins was born September 4, 1934, in Antelope County, Nebraska to William and Vida Chase Mullins. He died March 28, 2024, at his son’s home in Fort Myers, Florida, with his family at his side. He graduated from Plainview High, where he was on the 1951 State championship football team. John was also involved with FFA and 4-H and won his first Stetson hat showing his champion hog. John was destined to be a cowboy for life. He owned horses and was wearing cowboy boots in high school and his senior research project was on Appaloosas. When he joined the National Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) as a lifetime member in 1952, he was member #360.
In 1955 he joined the US Army and was a welder with an armored infantry unit in Fort Polk in Louisiana, and Fort Sam Houston in Texas. During off duty hours he would get to know the local Appaloosa owners and show their horses. At the 1958 San Antonio Stock Show he won the Championship Appaloosa Stake race on Chief of Fourmile, who was later inducted into the ApHC Hall of Fame. In 1999 Breyer model horse #752, the limited edition of Chief of Fourmile has a picture of John Mullins riding him at that show. A er his time in the army he returned to work at the Pitzer Quarter Horse Ranch in Ericson, Nebraska, and started his training career. He bought an Appaloosa mare named Navajo Turquoise of AA and bred her to the Pitzer’s AQHA stallion, Little Fob, and the resulting foal in 1962 was Little Navajo Joe.
In 1962 John made the move to the Acomb’s Farm outside Stafford, New York, to work with their Appaloosas. In 1963 he married Cleo Murphy of Norfolk, Nebraska, and she started her career at the VA hospital in Batavia as a medical technologist. In 1964 they bought property in Elba,
John is survived by his wife, Cleo; and his twins, Douglas Mullins and Susan Calandra; grandchildren, Lauren and John Calandra; his sister, Margaret Shoemaker; brother, Jim Mullins; cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family and a huge list of close friends that made life special every day. He was predeceased in death by brother, Lyle Mullins. Memorials may be made to Genesee Co. 4-H Horse Program, 420 East Main St., Batavia, NY 14020 or Batavia First United Methodist Church, 8221 Lewiston Road, Batavia, NY 14020. You

New York to begin John’s training and breeding business. At one time they had 44 horses on their farm. He was also an approved Appaloosa judge. It was a joy to John that his twins, Susan and Douglas, both rode and competed in 4-H and Appaloosa shows. John trained Little Navajo Joe and started showing him and won 35 Grand Championships at halter and over 50 High-Point End of Year awards. Little Navajo Joe and John competed in western pleasure, reining, and game classes. With John riding as jockey they also won a flat race out of the gate. John and Little Navajo Joe have been credited with “playing a starring role” in spreading the popularity of the Appaloosas east of the Mississippi River during the 1960s. Little Navajo Joe was inducted into the ApHC Stallion Hall of Fame in 2000.
John taught riding for many years and in some cases several generations in the same family. He was active in the Genesee 4-H horse program by being on the advisory board, judging shows and holding clinics at the farm. In later years he would find a place on the top seat in the bleacher to take pictures of the 4-H horse contestants at the Genesee Co. Fair and then give the pictures to 4-H to view at their end of year program. e last few years, he took pictures from his walker.
John Mullins loved life, his faith as a lifelong Methodist, enjoyed nature, photography, traveled to all of the states and other countries, also collected minerals and gems and liked people. His favorite song was “ e Last Cowboy.”

Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

Long-time resident, Gilbert W. Blue, was known by many as “Gib.” Gib was born in Bergen on December 3, 1924, the oldest child with three younger sisters. He was fi h generation from Scotland ancestors. He grew up on the farm on the corner of Apple Tree Ave. and Lake St., near the Artistic Motel. ere was an apple orchard east of the property that ran all the way to Rte. 33A. e 81-acre farm included the property where Garber Collision stands, part of Liberty Pumps land, along with the land where 490 is in Bergen.
Gib went to the Bergen School on Rochester Street from Kindergarten through high school graduation from the same school building. He graduated in January of his senior year, along with seven classmates, so they could enter the military.
He wanted to join the Air Force, but because he was colorblind, he wasn’t eligible. Instead, he joined the U.S. Army. During WWII, he was a light machine gunner and squad leader. He was shot twice during the war, once in the arm and the other in the upper thigh. A er his first injury, he spent Christmas in a hospital in Paris. He was honorably discharged and decorated with a Purple Heart medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal with one bronze battle star, and the American Campaign Medal.
A er his service, Gib went to Cornell University. At Cornell, his intention was to be a large animal veterinarian, but because of his service injury he wasn’t able. In his first semester, his mother died, and he returned to the family farm to help with his three younger sisters. His father died and the family farm was sold in part to NY State for Route 490.
Gib married Jean Lutrell and they had three children, two daughters and a son.
office moved to Buffalo Street (now the location of Mike’s Gym). Some of Gib’s deputy clerks included Bev Crosier, Mary Shuler, Sharon Lehmann, and Dorothy Sackett. In 1986, Gib retired at 62 years old, as he had Tier I status and was encouraged to retire. Gib was fair, kind, and well-respected, a staple of Bergen. Most Friday nights you could find him and his family at the Rose Garden for dinner. Occasionally they traveled to the Red Osier for Gib’s favorite creamed cod on toast. Gib officiated the wedding of Joe and Maria Chimino and in 1961 Gib won the best beard for the Bicentennial in Bergen. A er his wife passed away, Gib spent many mornings at the Bergen Farm Market with his buddies, Dick Partridge and George Constatine.
ey moved to 66 S. Lake St., where he lived most of his life.
Gib was the Bergen Village Clerk Treasurer and the Town Justice from 1947-1986. No one ever ran against him for town justice, which speaks volumes about his character and dedication to his title. e Village Clerk’s office originated where the Byron-Bergen Library now stands. Eventually the office moved across from Ralph & Rosie’s and shared space with Leon Katzen, Bergen’s attorney. is is currently the building where Brett Ashley Wilcox has her business. From there, the
Gib passed January 21, 2006 at the age of 81 and was buried in Mount Rest Cemetery in Bergen.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago.Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor across the hall confronted me yesterday, accusing me of mistreating my dog. She said that “Cookie” whines and barks for hours whenever I am gone, and that I need to take him with me rather than leave him alone in the apartment. I work fulltime at an office that doesn’t allow dogs. When I travel, I take Cookie to a sitter. But is 8 to 10 hours away too long for a dog? -- Gerald in Brooklyn
DEAR GERALD: Dogs aren’t always happy about their owners going away for 8 hours a day. ey can develop separation anxiety. is can manifest as nonstop barking, whining or even acting out (like destroying your slippers, pooping in the living room or worse).
Try counterconditioning, a training method recommended by the ASPCA in its article “Separation Anxiety.” Each time you leave home, give your dog a treat or a puzzle toy with treats inside (which will keep him occupied for several minutes). When you get home, put the toy out of sight. e idea is that Cookie will associate your leaving with an enjoyable treat.
You can also desensitize him to your leaving by getting Cookie used to your “departure cues.” For example, if you always put on a coat and pick up your keys when you leave, have a training session where you do the same thing, but then sit down and watch TV instead of leaving. You’ll need to do this (and probably other moves) for several weeks, but it could help.
ese are very basic training exercises, and you may need to incorporate additional training. Check out the article on www.aspca.org, talk to Cookie’s vet and consider working with a professional trainer to help curb his anxiety.

DID YOU KNOW? The exact causes of many headaches continues to confound medical researchers. Though the Cleveland Clinic notes that certain environmental factors, such as exposure to allergens or strong odors from household chemicals, can trigger headaches, the mechanism that causes muscles or blood vessels to swell or tighten remains something of a mystery. During a headache, the mysterious mechanism activates specific nerves that affect muscles and blood vessels, and these nerves then send pain signals to the brain. Harvard Medical School notes that tissues that surround the brain and some major nerves in the brain also can signal pain. HMS also reports that while there are more than 300 types of headaches, only about 10 percent of them have an identifiable cause. And what triggers a headache in one person will not necessarily do so in another. However, HMS notes that people who suffer from migraines, an especially severe type of headache that can increase a person’s risk of heart attack, tend to remain sensitive to the same triggers. That’s good news, as it means that people who can identify their headache triggers can then take steps to avoid those triggers in the future in the hopes of reducing the frequency of their headaches.
* “ ere are so many different ways to pay bills these days that it can be hard to keep track of bills that need to be mailed. Here’s a great way to keep track of when to pay a bill so that it always gets there on time: I used to write the due dates of my bills on my calendar. Now I write the pay by date for each bill on the calendar. For bills that go in the mail, I write a date that’s a week ahead of when it is due. For bills that are paid online, I write a date three days ahead of the due date, and for automatic payments, I deduct the money from the paycheck BEFORE the dra is made. Now I never miss a due date.” -- T.F. in Indiana

Last week after shopping at a local store I returned my cart to the cart corral, not realizing I had left my purse in the cart. While driving home and realizing (then panicking) I had left my purse in the cart I drove back to the store. My purse was not in the cart where I had left it so I went inside the store to the Customer Service desk. Yes! Someone had brought my purse in and everything inside was still there. At the time I didn’t think to ask if the person who did this had left a name. But I would like to let whoever it was know how very grateful I am and to thank them. It’s nice to know that there are still honest people out there. Thank you!
At times, during my husband’s recent hospital stay I felt invisible to some of the professional medical staff when they entered his room (thankfully most were fine). As a retired RN I feel it is crucial for professionals ( MD, RN, etc.) to also address caregivers in the room when they arrive to discuss treatment, surgery, or discharge care. At times a patient’s life may depend on it. My advice to the professionals is to take the blinders off and acknowledge and address the caregiver(s) in the room. My advice to the caregiver: don’t be ignored. Speak up with your questions until you get an answer. Find an advocate on the unit that you can work with. There is no need to go it alone or have unanswered questions. Fragmented care isn’t much better than no care.
The surest sign of spring is back in our area. No, it’s not the returning Robins. It’s the Dad with a riding mower and the toddler balanced on his knee. For those of you who think a mower is an amusement park ride, it’s time to learn about all the children who have squirmed, bounced off, and ended up under the mower blades. About 9,000 children a year are injured in mower accidents. Of that number, roughly 15 are fatalities. Why bother strapping your kid into a car seat for a drive when you don’t value their lives enough to keep them away from a mower?

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY
Pack on your own time. Cause as little disruption as possible by packing belongings before or after office hours. Respect the working environment, recognizing that your coworkers still need to get their jobs done.
Makes about 2 dozen
6 medium-size red potatoes, peeled and quartered
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 cup finely chopped yellow onions
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup seeded and chopped red bell peppers
1/2 cup seeded and chopped green bell peppers
1/2 cup seeded and chopped yellow bell peppers
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon Tabasco brand pepper sauce
2 pounds medium-size shrimp, peeled, deveined and coarsely ground in a food processor
2 large eggs, well beaten
1/4 cup chopped freshly parsley leaves
1/2 cup peanut oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1. In a large saucepan, boil the potatoes in lightly salted water to cover until fork tender. Remove from the heat and drain. Transfer them to a large mixing bowl and mash with a fork. Let cool.
2. Melt the butter over medium heat in a medium-size skillet. Add the onions, celery, bell peppers, salt, cayenne, black pepper, and Tabasco, and cook, stirring, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook, stirring until they turn pink, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for about 5 minutes.
3. Combine the shrimp mixture with the potato mixture. Add the eggs and parsley and mix well. Let cool for 10 minutes.
4. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
5. Form the shrimp mixture into patties, using 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the mixture, depending on what size you desire, and pat lightly with the flour. Cook two to three at a time in the hot oil until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
