PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Are Therapy Dogs Tax Deductible? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I spend quite a bit of money each year on my two Corgis: veterinary care, grooming, toys and a pet sitter. They’re also registered as therapy pets -- so they earn their keep! With all that I spend, why can’t I write off pet care on my taxes? -Harold in Palo Alto, California DEAR HAROLD: I hear you! Americans spent almost $96 billion on their pets in 2019, over $5 billion more than they did in 2018. But almost none of that can be deducted from federal taxes. Here’s what you can’t deduct: medical expenses, training or maintenance (like grooming and pet sitters). Companion or comfort animals and many therapy pets aren’t eligible for tax deductions. Here are the few deductions that are possible: * If you have a service animal -- one that is trained to assist those with specific medical conditions, such as a guide dog for the blind or a service dog that assists those with mobility or neurological issues -- the costs of buying, training and maintaining that service animal may be deductible. * If an animal is employed at your business -- such as a guard dog or the star of your Instagram empire -- you may be able to take a deduction on your business taxes. But be prepared to explain how the pet is essential to your business. * If you donate money or goods to a registered nonprofit animal shelter or animal advocacy group, this counts as a charitable deduction. Make sure to get a receipt. * Finally, you can set up a trust fund to care for your pets should they outlive you. Talk to an estate attorney about this option and any potential tax benefits. FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

The United States Department of Energy says the average American family spends about $2,200 each year for energy costs, and large, inefficient appliances no doubt contribute heavily to those expenditures. Appliances that are several years old, including refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and even ovens, may no longer meet the stringent energy-saving specifications required of new items. That means such appliances are negatively affecting the environment and their owners’ bottom lines.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT While new homes are being built to be more energy efficient than ever before, thanks to a growing green building movement and increasingly strict building codes, the age of existing dwellings continues to present challenges. More than 40 percent of the housing stock in the United States was built before 1969 and simply wouldn’t stand up to today’s standards. Yet, much can be done to help homeowners improve their building envelope to reduce energy use and increase efficiency. Improving your home’s energy efficiency can help save money, keep you more comfortable, reduce pollution, and prevent global warming.

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* “I found a small waste basket that fits right between the wall and my dryer. There’s a gap that’s about 8 inches wide. The lip of the basket keeps it from sliding down to the floor, so it’s easy to clean out the lint trap and put the waste in the basket. Also, I used a strip of hook-and-loop tape to attach a tissue holder box vertically to the wall. I stick a box of fabric softener sheets in it, and they, too, are right where I need them.” -- T.K. in Nevada
* “Place recipes inside of a plastic bag so that they can be handled while cooking, but not dirtied. This is especially necessary with heirloom recipes. For myself, I have made photocopies of recipes handed down from my grandmother, so the originals are safe in the cookbook. I like handwritten recipe cards because it’s like the writer is there with you.” -- T. in Ohio

LeRoy Village Green

W
hen Sam Vagg started working at the LeRoy Village Green Residential Health Care Facility 21 years ago, she probably never imagined she would one day support its residents through a global pandemic. Yet, that is exactly what she is doing. In spite of necessary changes, Vagg, assistant administrator of LeRoy Village Green, shared the impact COVID-19 has had on residents, their resilience and the outpouring of support from the LeRoy community and beyond. “When COVID-19 came through, the first wave of changes restricted visitation,” recalled Vagg. “Our residents already have so many losses, so this was hard. Just two days later, restrictions came through to stop communal dining and group activities.” The staff knew they had to act quickly. “We purchased several iPads for the building, so that our residents could better keep in touch with loved ones and each other,” shared Vagg. “We also modified daily activities. They are social distancing, but they can still play Bingo! We had a camping weekend, and we made smores,” she said. “We are planting and working with seedlings. We also reached out in support of LeRoy’s Class of 2020, posting the graduation year of many of our seniors. Some graduated in the 1930’s! Most importantly, we are spending more one-on-one time with them.” In spite of the difficulties, Village Green seniors are getting through it. “They have acclimated to this new way in almost a heroic manner,” observed Vagg. “They rarely complain. Several of our residents are quite elderly. We have about 20 residents who are 90 years old and older. They have lived through some pretty tough times. It is not fair, but they are a tough generation!”
Staff gather for a photo at LeRoy Village Green! Village Green residents “watch the news, and they have seen what has happened in other nursing homes,” said Vagg, noting residents are grateful they are being kept safe. “Mother’s Day weekend was especially difficult for many of them,” she added. “We all got through it together, and we offer as much support as we can to make the window visits as special as they can be. We also help keep our residents as connected as possible until we get through this.” While working seven days a week for the past two months like Vagg, it can seem as though there is “no light at the end of the tunnel,” but she encourages residents and staff to stay positive and disconnect from social media and its hypothetical situations. “Take things one day at a time,” suggested Vagg. The LeRoy community has played a huge role in encouraging those at LeRoy Village Green. “I have said it a lot,” Vagg emphasized. “This is one of the worst things that could happen, but if it had to happen, I am so grateful I live in LeRoy! Everyone lets us know that they are thinking of us and that we are not forgotten.”

The “Pack your Porch” food drive for the LeRoy Community Kitchen was a huge success!
Staff and residents have received many gifts, including meals for staff, flowers for residents, gifts for Easter and St. Patrick’s Day, homemade masks, cards, letters and more. “For Easter, the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford showed up with 100 meals, serving all three shifts of our staff !” shared Vagg. Seniors and staff have also received letters and cards. “Kids write to our residents, send them pictures,” said Vagg. “During this time when you just feel so beaten down, it means so much to me and to our staff to receive a card or email letting us know we are doing a good job.” “It is rare for others to receive the support we are getting,” she continued. “It is constant and wonderful. Whatever we need, there are people offering to get it for us. It has been amazing just to know that we are not alone, that we are being thought of, and if we need anything, the community is there for us. Yes, we have a very unified team here, but it is strengthened by the community which backs us up and gives us support.” Sam Vagg also supports seniors in the community, working as a home health aide on weekends and delivering meals to about 20 homebound seniors on Tuesdays. “I am on the board of directors at the LeRoy Community Kitchen,” she said. “Sarah and Jay Tonzi recently held a food drive for us called “Pack your Porch!” Participants put a bag of groceries out on their front porch to be picked up, and we received over 100 bags!” “We are a team in this community,” Vagg continued. “We all just help each other and do our part to make sure everyone is taken care of. I am so grateful to the community because our residents are receiving consistent, unwavering support as is our staff. It is so uplifting, and it makes this difficult situation so much better.” Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com: •

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

After moving, getting acclimated to a new neighborhood and making new friends is one way to feel at home.
CREATE A SALE-WORTHY SHOWPLACE The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps. De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items. Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.
ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Get involved If you have children, you may have the advantage of meeting people at school functions or at the bus stop. Volunteer with the PTA/PTO or sign up to coach youth sports or serve as a scout leader. These opportunities will help expand the number of people you meet in your new community.
Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms. Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents. Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions. REAL ESTATE

This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Welcoming
He Can’t Find Relief for Itchy Ear Canal ---
Dr. Matthew Sheldon
DEAR DR. ROACH: I just turned 68. For the past couple of months, my ear canals have been very itchy. Also, my wife was constantly cleaning earwax out of my ears. Now for some reason I no longer produce earwax, but my ears itch a lot. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? How do I stop the itching? I have tried olive oil. It seems to work but not really that well. A doctor looked in my ear and said the ear canals look fine. -- R.K. ANSWER: Itching in the ear canals is common, but usually an exam is able to lead the examiner to at least suspect a diagnosis. An incipient ear infection is one common reason, but your issue has been going on for months. Skin conditions that itch, such as eczema, is another common one. The doctor might have seen this, but sometimes the findings are subtle. Just having dry skin is a common cause, especially in winter, and olive oil is one treatment, but if it isn’t working it’s time to stop. I often see people make their problem worse by using inappropriate therapies, especially peroxide, and also by putting objects in the ear to scratch it. This can lead to abrasions, lacerations and worse that I won’t horrify you with. I would get the ear looked at again, and if there still is nothing to see, one treatment is a mild prescription steroid drop for a period of time. Your regular doctor or an ear/nose/throat specialist would be a good choice. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are net carbs really a thing? I understand low impact on blood sugar, but not measuring net carbs. -- H.C. ANSWER: The “net carbs” number is normally calculated by taking the grams of total carbohydrates and subtracting the grams of fiber and sugar alcohols. It’s an attempt to look at the effect on blood sugar, and it has modest informational benefit. It can be misleading, because some sugar alcohols (ending in “-ol,” like maltitol and xylitol) do increase blood sugar somewhat, though not as much as sugars (which end in “-ose,” like glucose and sucrose). I don’t recommend using the term “net carbs.” I think it’s more important to look at ingredients. Avoid large amounts of added sugar and processed starches. Make sure the carbohydrates you take in come mostly from vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. These are the foundations of a healthy diet, and you don’t need to count numbers. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with kidney disease and was advised to drink eight glasses of water daily. I can only get down three glasses. Is it OK to drink tea instead? Would vitamins help? -- E.K. ANSWER: From the standpoint of your kidneys, tea and coffee count as water. Having adequate fluid intake is important for your kidneys, but most people who aren’t exercising or living in hot or dry environments don’t need eight full glasses a day. Vitamins are not necessary for kidney health; however, people with very advanced kidney disease often need a special form of vitamin D called calcitriol. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

The Poppy Lady In 1918, an American woman named Moina Michael was inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields. She turned the red poppy into a symbol of rememberance for soldiers who sacrificed for freedom.

COMMON TERMS FOUND ON FOOD LABELS Dietary fiber: The Mayo Clinic notes that dietary fiber refers to the parts of plant foods that the human body cannot digest or absorb. Fiber is typically classified as soluble, which refers to types of fiber that dissolve in water, and insoluble, which is used to describe types of fiber that promote movement of material through the digestive system. Soluble fiber can help lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, while insoluble can help people who suffer from constipation or irregular stools.

NEW TRANSPLANTS ARE CHANGING LIVES (NAPSI)—Organ transplants have been saving lives for many years. You may even know someone who has received a kidney or a heart transplant, and what a difference that gift of life has made. Another type of transplant has been changing lives in incredible new ways—the transplantation of hands and faces. More than 100 people worldwide have received these types of transplants: a veteran who lost his limbs in war, a woman whose face was devastated in an attack, a child who lost his hands to severe infection. All have had their lives transformed. These procedures are called “Vascularized Composite Allograft” organ transplants, or VCA transplants. They are composed of multiple types of tissue. With a hand transplant, for example, bones, blood vessels, nerves and skin must all be attached to the remaining arm. So many tissues, however, make VCA transplants extremely complex. The surgery requires the involvement of dozens of surgeons and other medical professionals and can take 16 hours or more. Recovery is also demanding for patients; rehabilitation can be a full-time job for one to two years. Yet, the results are life changing. VCA transplants can restore abilities and independence in ways that artificial limbs and reconstructive surgery cannot. Just consider the difference a working hand with moving fingers and a sense of touch could make. It can mean the ability to take care of oneself, work, drive and play. Face transplants enable recipients to rejoin society, often ending isolation and depression. VCA and traditional organ transplants are the same in some respects. Criteria for matching donors and recipients include the need for compatible blood and tissue types. However, VCA requires matching for additional features such as skin tone, body size and hair color. Gender may also be taken into consideration. A commonly asked question about face transplants is whether the recipient will look like the donor. The answer is yes and no. Yes, skin characteristics such as moles, freckles and scars will transfer to the recipient. However, because the recipient’s underlying bone structure is apt to be different from the donor’s, resemblance will likely be minimal. Like with kidneys, livers and other organs, there is a national waiting list for VCA transplants that matches donors with potential recipients. However, enrolling as an organ donor on a state or national registry does not mean you’re authorizing VCA donation. Your family would make the decision about VCA donation after your death. You can learn more at www.organdonor.gov, a website of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might not like some people’s idea of a surprise. But you could be in for a pleasant shock when someone finally sends a reply to a request you made so long ago that you almost forgot about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a time to expect the unexpected. So don’t be surprised if a decision that just recently seemed final suddenly opens up and leaves you with another chance to make an important choice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a different tack on a work project might rankle some colleagues. But the positive results of your innovative course soon speak for themselves. Celebrate by doing something fun this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Meeting new associates can be awkward, even if you’re in a high positive phase right now. Best advice: Make them feel comfortable, and you’ll soon forget your own discomfort. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good time for you social Lions to blow-dry your manes, polish your claws and look like the Fabulous Felines you are as you make new friends and influence the influential. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expectations run especially high this week, and you should feel confident in your abilities to take advantage of what might be offered. A colleague has some advice you might find helpful. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent flurry of activity leaves you in need of a little breathing space, and you’d be wise to take it. Close family members should have an explanation about an emergency situation that just passed. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An insensitive act makes a difficult situation more so. But try not to waste either your physical or emotional energies in anger. Move on and let others fill the clod in on the facts of life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s a good time to look into that training program or college course you’ve been considering. You might have a good place to use those sharpened skills sooner rather than later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Education dominates much of your aspect during this week. You might want to start checking out those summer session courses that could help advance your career plans. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Progress often comes in fits and starts. But at least you’re moving straight ahead with no backsliding. You should soon be able to pick up the pace and reach your goals in due time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be wary of a deal that gives confusing answers to your questions. Remember: It’s always risky swimming in unknown waters, so you need all the help you can get to stay on course. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing people together and creating close friendships wherever you go. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Build an effective (and

budget-friendly)
home gym
Physical fitness is important. Exercise guidelines depend on the individual, but the American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. That amount may need to be increased to meet specific goals, such as weight loss. In order to meet their fitness goals, many people invest in home gyms. Home gyms can be a convenient way to maximize physical activity and help people maintain muscle mass. According to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, a Harvard-affiliated medical center, staying fit can improve physical strength, reduce seniors' fear of falls, increase confidence, and improve sleep. When setting up a home gym, people may be tempted to invest a fortune into their equipment. But such investments aren't entirely necessary. Here are some ways to have a functional, budget-friendly workout space in your home. · Invest in elastic resistance bands. Invest in lightweight elasticbands. According to a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine, such bands can improve strength just as effectively as many weight machines commonly found in gyms. Resistance bands don't take up much space and can be tucked out of sight when not in use. · Dedicate a workout space. Many people find that areas away from the bustle of the household are great spaces to devote to home gyms. Include a full-length mirror that lets you make sure you're performing exercises correctly and invest in a stereo to pump in inspirational music. The fewer the distractions, the more likely you will commit to your exercise regimen. · Invest in a set of dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells or a few of various weights are a good investment. Dumbbells are compact and can be used to perform a variety of strength-training exercises. Begin with light weights and work your way up to reduce your risk of injury. · Try stability balls. Stability balls are used to perform various core exercises, according to Harvard Medical School. The body's core can be strengthened to improve balance, reduce back pain and more. Stability balls also can be used to perform abdominal crunches, squats, hamstring curls, and body bridges. Balls also can double as a bench when working with dumbbells. · Don't forget about cardio. Elliptical machines, stationary bikes and treadmills are effective, but there are other ways to get your daily dose of cardiovascular exercise. Lateral shuffles between two points on a gym floor, or setting up a circuit of jumping jacks or skipping rope can keep your heart rate up and improve health. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Life might be slowly getting back to normal, but a number of things we anticipated won’t be happening now. The expired prescription-drug drop off: Once a year in my area, the drug store turns its parking lot over to an organization that collects and destroys old drugs. Not this year; it’s already been canceled. A thought: Some local police departments have a collection bin in their facility, usually in the lobby. Call to inquire if your police department has one, or if they’re planning a drug event of their own. The shredding events: Twice a year the bank and the senior center hire a company to bring in their shredding truck and accept all paper items to be shredded: old tax records, bills, documents with personal information on them. This is a very valuable service, and unfortunately, around here those have been canceled. One way to get around this is to have your own shredder. They can be ordered online, typically for less than $40. Learn the difference between strip cut, cross cut and confetti cut. Pictures can be deceptive, so read the specs for the machine. Some will only shred small receipts. Plays and dinners: Once you hear that an event you’d paid for is being canceled, start right away to get your money back. The group might ask that you let them keep your money for their expenses, saying you can claim it as a donation on your taxes. You might consider it, but don’t assume you can get a credit for the same event next year. Better to get your money in hand now. There are so many other events -- senior games and fitness clinics, summer banquet and dance, the legal help event, monthly tech help -- all likely canceled for the foreseeable future. Tip: Call the organization anyway. They might have found a way to safely hold their events.

Sharew ith 259,20 0 readers!
I was at the Batavia Post Office the week of Easter.
Shout-out to the two people that were picking up trash in Centennial Park today. So thoughtful! Thanks for making our city a more beautiful place.
Shout out to all the towns for distributing free face masks on May 9th. It did me proud seeing our Rotary, Town Supervisor and volunteers distributing the masks. Made me proud to be a Penfield Resident!
How low can someone go by stealing a bronze veteran flag holder from my father’s grave at a local cemetery? He was a WWII Veteran! I went out today for groceries, and I saw one person who did not wear a mask, and I wanted to say something but refrained from doing so. Don’t people understand English? She went outside, and what appeared to be her boyfriend, along with two young children were also outside. The guy wore no mask; neither did one of the children. One child did have a mask on. It’s obvious that some people just GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I had two boxes to mail out. The post office clerk said one package was going to cost me $28 to mail. I told the clerk I cannot afford it. Out from the line of people waiting, a beautiful young girl said, “I will pay for that.” I am 78 years old and so surprised that a stranger would do this for me. The clerk rechecked the package weight, and it only came to $10 plus change. So, this girl, who worked at Wendy’s a few doors down, paid for my package. Thank you, young lady. You made my day! Thanks for your kindness to an old lady.
Thank you so much to the two ladies in the red car who brought coffee to the school bus in Clarkson the morning of 5/11. That was so kind! Many
of us volunteer to give out meals to the Brockport families, and this day was especially cold and rainy. The coffee warmed us right up and put a smile on our face. Thank you for your act of kindness during this difficult time!
How refreshing to hear that someone has the same sentiments as I do. I enjoyed the post entitled, “Rippled Affect.” Poison is a terrible way to kill a rodent, or anything else for that matter. And yes, it does have a rippling affect. Do not get me wrong; I do not like mice, but when one makes it into my house, we trap them alive and then release them. I have also used natural remedies as well. Mint is something mice do not like. It was a pleasure reading a decent post, by someone who seems very knowledgeable as well, unlike some who post horrible things

The entire staff at the Legacy at Erie Station Road have gone above and beyond in keeping all of us safe. They are taking excellent precautions during the pandemic to keep everyone safe both physically and mentally. Communication with the staff has been excellent, especially the weekly email from the director. I am very pleased to be a resident in the Villas and am thankful for the great job everyone has been doing during this difficult time. Thank you to you all, and I look forward when this is over being able to go to the wonderful activities that we all are missing. Great job!

I went walking on Saturday, May 2, 2020 around noon. There were many people on bikes and walking or running. It was a beautiful day. Many of those people were not wearing masks. I know that every person is required to wear a mask now. Please be considerate of your fellow humans and wear your masks. I would like to comment on the person who wrote in about the nosy, old lady parking lot police. I think every place has one or two. I don’t know what they get over trying to make others as miserable as they are. They should just try to mind their own business and get along with people. I think they would be much happier women.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Tweak job titles Mimic phrasing from the job listing to beat the bots and get résumés flagged for review. Slightly change job position titles so they mirror the wording used. For example, if a recruiter is looking for a “financial account manager,” and you have the experience, list your title as something like “Senior manager of new financial accounts.”
Ironwood Heavy Highway Genesee Community College has an opening for a grant-funded Academic Advisor for the Upward Bound Program who helps provide college prep services to a case load of at-risk high school students in target school districts within Genesee and Wyoming County. These services include, but are not limited to, one-on-one advising, after-school, evening and Saturday tutoring, student and parent workshops, help with college preparations and financial literacy education, monitoring of academic progress, planning and execution of college visits, and career and cultural activity trips. The Academic Advisor will work closely with the Program Director to develop and implement academic and summer program curriculums. Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Education, School Counseling, Social Work or related area and a minimum of three years’ (or five with an Associate’s) experience working with secondary school youth and the postsecondary admission process or related work is required. Preference is given for experience working with youths from low income, first generation college student families. Evening and weekend hours may be required. Deadline for applications is June 14, 2020. For more details and to apply, visit www.genesee.edu/employment/. Please include a cover letter, resume and contact information for four references. GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Class A & Class B Drivers Wanted
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
