HOW
Socialize the pet. Learning how to respond to other dogs and people is an important aspect of canine life. If the pet is to get along with other dogs, it needs to have high exposure to other animals every day and in various scenarios. Socialization can begin as soon as a puppy is immunized and able to venture out with others.

COOKIES AND CREAM DONUTS
Makes 6 donuts
11/2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar
1 cup gluten-free flour
1/4 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 teaspoons coconut oil, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
12 vegan crunchy chocolate cookies, crushed
1 12-ounce jar Dollop Gourmet Madagascar Vanilla vegan frosting
Milk
1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Spray a donut pan with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Pour the vinegar into a 1/2 cup measure. Add enough milk to come to the brim. Let sit until slightly thickened, 5 to 10 minutes.
3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, applesauce, coconut oil, and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix until smooth. Add the almond milk mixture and continue mixing for 1 minute more. Add half of the crushed cookies and mix until just combined.
4. Scoop the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling threequarters of the way full. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool before frosting.
5. Microwave the uncovered frosting jar for 5-second intervals, stirring in between, until soft. Gently frost the top of each donut. Sprinkle the remaining crushed cookies over the donuts.

IN TIME (The History Channel)
* May 8, 1988, Stella Nickell is convicted of murder by a Seattle jury. She was the first person to be found guilty of violating the Federal Anti-Tampering Act after putting cyanide in Excedrin capsules in an effort to kill her husband. She began planning his death after their 1976 honeymoon.
What plants are most effective to grow in containers?
Most vegetables grown in a backyard can be grown in containers, although a container’s diameter and depth need to be considered when selecting what vegetables to grow. Plant density (number of vegetable plants per container) depends on individual plant space requirements and root depth. Containers-grown plants require more frequent fertilization typically than in ground plants because of the limited space within the container for drawing nutrients. Fertilizer can be mixed with the potting mix pre-planting, or you
can purchase potting mix with a starter fertilizer mixed in. Plants grown in containers need frequent watering as containers dry out fast. Watering daily is necessary to provide adequate moisture for plant growth. Apply enough water to reach the bottom of the container. Allow excess water to drain out. Avoid wetting the leaves when watering as this will encourage development of foliar diseases. Try not to let your container dry out completely between watering as this will lead to flower and fruit drop of. The size of the container needs will depend a lot on the vegetable or herbs you
plant. Most herbs can be grown in ½-1 gal containers. Cabbage, Cucumbers, green beans, leaf lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and cherry tomatoes can be planted in a 1-gallon containers. Beets, Carrots, Eggplant, Peppers, and radishes need 2-gallon containers. Your regular tomatoes will need 3-gallon containers. My personal preference is a
20 gallon grow bag where you can grow multiple vegetables together if they are companion plants (they can and like to grow together). Note: some don’t like to be grown together.

Preventing Ear Infections in Dogs
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German Shepherd puppy, Max, seems to get an ear infection every other week. He’s miserable, shaking his head from side to side. And he hates having ear drops put in -- a job that gets more di cult the larger he gets! How can I stop the constant ear infections? --
Betsy J., Syracuse, New York
DEAR BETSY: Dogs can be very prone to ear infections. e shape of their ear canal is the most likely reason. Allergies and ear mites vie for the title of top irritant in a pet’s ear canal.
e symptoms are probably very familiar to you. Dark discharge from the ears, accompanied by an unusual, dank odor, frequent head shaking, scratching at the ears, and perhaps some scabbing of the outer ear. A veterinarian can pinpoint redness and swelling inside the ear canal as well.
Treatment should always start at the veterinarian’s o ce. ere, cleaning and disinfection of the ear will be done, and then your dog will likely be prescribed medication -- typically eardrops -- to be administered for up to 10 days. A er treatment is complete, you’ll want to prevent future infections by gently cleaning Max’s ears with an ear cleaning solution for dogs and cotton balls (not Q-tips).
Getting a big dog to hold still for treatment can be a struggle. Here’s one method: If he’s very reactive, try to stand over Max with one leg on each side and his head facing forward, away from you. Hold him under his muzzle and apply the medication or cleaning solution to one ear and massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds. Let go of his muzzle and allow him to shake his head. Repeat on the other side. Finish by gently swiping the ear canal with cotton balls.

DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

SENIOR NEWS

Heavy Li ing of Pet Ownership
For seniors, there are several questions that arise when we consider whether we should adopt another pet a er the death of a long-loved companion. ere’s the scary thought of potential veterinary bills or whether we should own a dog that needs to be walked every day. Or maybe we think of adopting a young cat who will likely outlive us or an elderly cat who probably won’t.
I rmly believe, however, that when it comes to deciding about adopting a pet that the biggest potential problem comes down to heavy li ing.
e rule of four, I call it: ere are four likely scenarios wherein, without intervention or assistance, heavy li ing is required.
For the economical 40-pound bag of dog chow, I would need to li it into the shopping cart, put it on the conveyor belt at checkout, get it into the car and once home, get it into the house. at’s four li ings.
is applies to even the 20-pound jug of cat litter. I do the math: 4 times 20 equals 80 pounds I’d be li ing without interventions.
Interventions can take the shape of a strong teenage boy angel who happens to walk by in the pet supplies aisle; a store clerk who gets down cat litter from a very high shelf; checkouts with a radar gun on a stretchy cord that will reach to the cart to scan the bar code; and big neighbors who happen to be strolling by just as I’m pulling in my driveway.
Without luck, however, there have been too many times when all four li ings have been required. I su er the next day.
I have decided to cut my pet-related li ing down to none. I have signed up for home delivery at two stores, never mind the expense. It’s worth every penny to see other people walk up my driveway carrying the heavy items, fully appreciative of the fact that I don’t have to do any li ing whatsoever.

RECOMMENDED MOUTHWASHES
Dentists recommend that patients rinse with mouthwash daily but also caution that mouthwash does not replace brushing or flossing. However, it does improve oral hygiene by protecting against tooth decay, plaque, gum disease, and bad breath. Common ingredients in mouthwash include peroxide for whitening and fluoride to protect tooth enamel. Essential oils are also used to fight bacteria and plaque buildup. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Exercise Builds Strength and Improves Limits in Those With Arthritis
DEAR DR. ROACH: I so appreciated your recent column on arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis. I’m a big exerciser; however, I have always heard that this arthritis is caused or exacerbated by wear and tear. I was surprised to hear otherwise!
I have modified or given up a handful of exercises that seem to cause my joints more pain, specifically fullbody weight-bearing on my wrists. Are these exercises I can incorporate back into my routine? I have found that certain activities, i.e. card shuffling, buttoning, etc., hurt my thumbs, so I have made adaptations. Should I work through the pain, assuming that I am not causing any more damage to my joints? -- L.D.
ANSWER: Most exercise is not damaging to joints, but high-impact or high-frequency activities can certainly worsen arthritis pain.
For arthritis of the knees and hips, I recommend walking as the best exercise, starting slow and building up based on what a person can tolerate. It’s the movement, not the resistance, that’s most important, so swimming (or just walking in a pool) is a great option for people who feel too much pain from walking.
For the smaller joints of the hands and wrists, I would recommend activities that don’t hurt you as much. Stretching the joints and movements like squeezing are a good place to start. You might consider a “stress ball” or a hand therapy ball to provide some resistance and build up hand strength.
Adapting your activities to your limitations is a good idea, but you also want to work on improving those limitations. A physical or occupational therapist is your best partner in designing a program.
Don’t forget that over-the-counter topical antiinflammatory medicines, like diclofenac, are pretty effective with small joints and are very safe.
***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH
The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams ofiron, thephytateandsoyprotein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DAIRY
Heart health benefits: Some people avoid dairy because of perceptions that it is bad for cardiac health. A report presented at the 2018 Congress of the European Society of Cardiology that looked at 20 studies involving around 25,000 people found no association between the consumption of most dairy products (including whole fat varieties) and cardiovascular disease. The only exception was milk, but the results showed one would have to drink almost a liter of milk a day for a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Still, the American Heart Association recommends adults choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products whenever possible. Also, a 2018 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found men who ate plenty of fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese had a smaller risk of coronary artery disease than men who ate less.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS
Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

Dining out can be a treat. A meal at a favorite restaurant can be a welcome change from kitchen duty. Mother’s Day is a busy day for restaurants, many of which have limited menus to better handle the crowds. As a result, if dining out on Mother’s Day, Mom may not get the full menu she desires. To ensure mothers have full menus at their disposal, gift givers can cook a meal at home on Mother’s Day and then choose another day of the week to enjoy a meal in an upscale restaurant.

NURSE PARENTS LONG TO CARE FOR THEIR OWN CHILDREN
BY JODI TADDONIO
I’m a 43-year-old mom of two girls. I’ve been a registered nurse since 2009 and have worked in multiple areas and have enjoyed them all. Most recently, I worked at Strong Memorial Hospital for 10 years.
I le in 2021 when my youngest, Chloe, was born. She was born with health complications that eventually led to tracheostomy surgery and she came home dependent on a ventilator to live. She has been home with her trach and vent since she was ve months old. In March, she turned 2.
It is getting harder to support my family; they rely on my income for food, electricity, and the mortgage. e lost hours add up fast.
But there is hope out there and it is sitting in the NY State Assembly. Bill A4073, the Vincent Scheppa Law, would allow parents who are Registered Nurses to be reimbursed at the LPN rate. ere will be no cost to the system for this bill’s implementation. e children already qualify for higher level, insurance covered nursing care. e only di erence is who they reimburse. It will, in fact, bene t the system, by reimbursing RN level nurses at a lower rate, and allowing families to lose fewer work hours and therefore not need temporary assistance to cover living expenses.
With her medical fragility and complex equipment, she quali es for private duty nursing (PDN). is is insurance paid nursing care that allows Chloe to be home with her family instead of in the hospital or a skilled facility. However, she needs specialized care, not just a baby sitter. Over the last year and a half, I had to leave my job to hire and train nurses in Chloe’s care.
I returned to the workforce in March of 2022 as a PDN myself. What irony. Nurses come to my home to care for Chloe while I leave to do the same for another family. While I am quali ed to care for my daughter, Medicaid rules state that a parent cannot be reimbursed for caring for their own child until age 18. Strangers must be hired. So, in order to earn an income myself, I must leave my fragile child in the hands of nurses I grow to know and trust, yet who are not mom.
If a nurse calls in or takes a vacation and I cannot nd a replacement, I cannot go to work. Private duty nurses are independent contractors, so there are no bene ts, no paid time o , no vacation hours. If you don’t work, you don’t get paid. I have missed many hours of work/income because I am unable to ll shi s for Chloe. ese shi s are day, evening, and overnight. She must have eyes on her 24/7, so there is no sleeping while caring for Chloe, even overnight. I cover all shi s, even if it means staying up all night. I have gone with two hours of sleep and no income.
I know I am not the only one struggling with this clear solution that is just out of reach. e bill passed through the Senate multiple times yet keeps stalling in the Assembly. Hopefully, theassemblywillsoonpassthebillandIandothers in my situation will be able to care for our own children.

PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY
Home improvement projects can be expensive. While the size and complexity of a project will affect how expensive the project is, homeowners can expect to shell out a pretty penny when they renovate or remodel areas of their home.
According to HomeAdvisor, an online resource for homeowners looking to connect with home improvement, maintenance and repair professionals, the average bathroom remodeling project costs $9,348, while the average home addition costs slightly less than $41,000. But renovation-minded homeowners need not reconsider their commitment to remodeling, as there are various ways to cut the costs associated with home improvement projects.
One such way is for homeowners to pitch in and do some of the work themselves.Calculatinglaborcostscanbedifficult, assuchcostscanvary greatly depending on the project, the contractor and the amount of hired help that contractor intends to employ. However, some estimates suggest labor will account for anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of the overall cost of the project. So it’s no surprise that homeowners can save themselves substantial amounts of money by doing some of the work themselves. Homeowners who intend to do some of the labor themselves should discuss this plan with contractors during the vetting process. Before hiring a contractor, make sure homeowners’ expected labor contributions are clearly defined in the contract. It’s best to leave the

overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results. &

Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible.
Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and
materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give theiryardsaneasternfeel, completewithakoipondanddecorativebridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths withsteppingstonesandornatetopiaries.Mixingtoomanystylestogether can take away from the overall appeal.

“Peanuts” (1950 - 2000)
Who doesn't love Charles M. Schulz's creations — Snoopy and the gang — which are going strong (via reruns) even today?
1895: The First-Ever Color Cartoon Richard Outcault creates a single-panel color cartoon for the New York Sunday World, with the main character called The Yellow Kid (or Mickey Dugan).
“Garfield” (1978) Created by Jim Davis, this chronic American strip was initially released under the name 'Jon.' We don't know about you, but we definitely want a greedy, snarky orange cat just like Garfield, and maybe an Odie too.
Which one is only pictured once?

Northhampton County Park Heroes
Hats off and a big thank you to the park staff and volunteers that maintain the miles of trails in Northhampton Park. With the many windstorms, and numerous dead ash trees, it has been quite a chore clearing trails so that the park hikers are able to enjoy their time in the park safely. You are appreciated!
Anonymous Donor
My friend and I were having lunch on 4/26. Our waitress told us an anonymous donor paid part of our bill. A special thank you for your kindness. It made our day!
Thank you volunteer organizations
I’d just like to give a quick shout-out to all the volunteer non-profit organizations out there doing great things for their communities. Whether it be picking up trash along trails, keeping fire hydrants clear of debris, helping to keep food pantry shelves stocked/organized, collecting items for animal shelters and beyond... THANK YOU!
HOMETOWN PHOTOS
Some Home Owners
Home owners that have abandoned swimming pools in their back yard are probably breeding mosquitos. Some form of wildlife could fall into it and not be able to get out. Of course some folks just have no pride in what their property looks like. Just sayin....
Missing Front License Plates
Why do so many vehicles with NY license plates on the back now not have front license plates? (This is especially true of Teslas, which Elon Musk doesn’t bother to build with a front license plate holder, but also plenty of other vehicles.) Did NY eliminate the requirement of a front plate without telling the rest of us? Or is this just another example of people thinking the rules only apply to others? The Thruway might be able to avoid a toll increase if they were allowed to charge fines to all of the vehicles passing through their toll cameras that have NY rear plates but no front plate!
Disrespectful
I sure hope that the mowers at a local cemetery are held accountable for destroying flowers that were left at graves. Destroyed flowers were spread by the mower and left. How could anyone do that!

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE DRAFTING A LIVING WILL
Do I have firm feelings about life-saving methods? A living will allows you to spell out preferences on insertion of feeding tubes, if you want specialized hydration, if you want to be hooked up to life support if brain function is minimal, and a host of other scenarios.
MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES
he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways.Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group.
Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located.
Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed.
Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater.
Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project.
Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

Parents may not know how to react when their soon-to-be or newly minted high school graduates bring up the idea of taking a gap year, but additional findings from the GYA’s “National Alumni Survey” might inspire parents to look at gap years more positively. For example, the survey, the findings of which were based on the responses of hundreds of American and Canadian citizens who had taken gap years in the past, found that 98 percent of respondents indicated their gap years helped them develop as a person, while 96 percent felt their gap years improved their self-confidence. In addition, 84 percent of respondents felt that they acquired skills to be successful in their careers during their gap years. Perhaps of most interest to parents of high school students contemplating gap years is that 73 percent of survey respondents felt their gap years increased their readiness for college and 57 percent said their gap years helped them determine what they wanted to study in college.
NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* My dogs stay outside most of the day now, while the weather is so nice. We bring them indoors when it gets too hot, but for a treat, we will freeze a plastic cup of ice and then chuck the giant “ice block” on the porch. They lick at it and play with it. It’s like a little doggie waterpark when they are done. -- M.E. in Ohio
* Finding a summer camp for your kids can be a chore. Check with your child’s school and school friends for recommendations. Also, see if your city’s recreation department is holding any camps. Some county extension offices (agriculture department) offer camps. Many of these are reasonably priced. Check into them now.
* I have a tip for you. When pouring water in your coffee pot, use a 4-inch funnel by placing it in the tank. Helps not spill water. Pour slowly! -- P.T. in Illinois
* To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, put meat, vegetables, fruit and peelings in a bread bag, and put it in the freezer until you take it outside for the garbage collector. -- E.L. in Virginia
* Keep fast-food coupons in your car’s glove compartment. They will be there if you need to go to a drive-through, and will be handy for picking up dinner on the way home. If you need them at home, chances are your car is there anyway! -- F.D. in Alabama
* Got paper recycling? More and more schools are using paper recycling as a means to fundraise. Don’t have a kid in school? Drive by and look for a dumpster or bin that’s labeled. Odds are good you might find one. If you don’t, ask!

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS
DURING THE WORKDAY
Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat highfat foods for lunch won’t get the afternoon energy boost that lowfat, healthy lunches will provide.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
