PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Puzzle Answers ____________________24
Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

DUMBLETON
SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Free up space on your smartphone by setting text messages to auto delete after a certain amount of time, like 30 or 60 days. If you have a friend who loves to send you gifs or endless bitmojis, you might want to have your chuckle, then delete. These image files take up much more space than a text message.
Salt, grim e and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical w inter. Drivers w ill not get far this spring and sum m er w ithout tires in good repair, w hich is w hy tire m aintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist. Now is the tim e to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. M any tires indicate the recom m ended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidew alls. Cold tem peratures m ay cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on im properly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires w hen they are cold for the m ost accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also w ill im prove fuel econom y. Exam ine the tires for tread w ear. Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. M echanics m ay recom m end rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 m iles, or about every six m onths for the average driver. Wheel realignm ent m ay be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Drivers m ay discover extrem e tread w ear, bulges or even cracks in the sidew all during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s tim e to replace the tires.
* “Baking soda can have a whitening effect on some fabrics and is a good alternative for items that might be sensitive to the harshness of bleach in the washing machine. It’s fantastic for musty items as well. Add a cup of baking soda to a load of towels, then add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water.” -- T.H. in Kansas * Periodically take down curtains and run them through the clothes dryer to dust. If they are not delicate, you can add a couple wool dryer balls to help loosen the dust. Rehang as soon as they are finished to avoid unsightly wrinkles. * “Drop a small item in a hard to reach place? Slip a sock over the end of a vacuum hose attachment and hold to secure. Turn on the vacuum and “suck up” the small item. The suction will hold it in place, but it will not go into the vacuum. Rather, it will be held captive in the sock, which you can simply slip off for retrieval.” -- A.F. in New York * Pet treats for fish? Sure! If you have lettuce in your vegetable crisper, most varieties of fish would enjoy a nibble on a floating piece. Just make sure that you remove any uneaten bits after a day. * “Tired of waiting for that frothy head on your beer or root beer to go down? Stick your finger in it and watch it disappear like magic.” -- K.E. in Idaho AUTOMOTIVE

NOTICE OF CANCELLATION FOR TVFCU’S 2019 ANNUAL MEETING Due to the current “New York on Pause” status, TVFCU is cancelling its 2019 Annual Meeting that was originally scheduled for May 21, 2020. Please note that the meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 16, 2020. Additional details are as follows:
PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Cooped Up Toddlers Keep Tormenting Pets
TVFCU Annual Meeting - New Date When: Thursday, July 16, 2020 • 4:45 pm
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah
Where: TVFCU • 10 Jefferson Square Batavia, NY 14020 Why: - Analysis of the financial and strategic goals of 2019 - Election of Board of Directors
2020 Candidates for 3 year terms: Jennifer Condame - Board Member since 1997 Graham Manufacturing, Controller & Chief Accounting Officer Norman Reimer - Board Member since 1998 Graham Manufacturing, Retired
Greg Torrey - Board Member since 2013 - Springbrooke Properties, LLC., Managing Partner, Genesee County Legislator
2020 Candidate for 1 year term: Gary Graber - Advisory Board Member since 2014, Terminal Manager, Teal’s Express Reminder: All votes must be cast in person at the meeting. Nominations for vacancies are not accepted from the floor. Nominations were accepted by petition and were due March 2, 2020.
Tonawanda Valley Federal Credit Union Ten Jefferson Square, P.O. Box 398, Batavia, NY 14021 www.tvfcubatavia.com • (585) 343-5627
DEAR SUSANNA: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

WEST MAIN WINE & SPIRITS
With CHRIS BLOSSOM
Celebrating Mother’s While in Pause Mother’s Day is a day that promises us new beginnings and hope in the future after a very long winter season, celebrating the love, beauty and understanding that nurtured us all into who we are. The weather begins to warm up, the sun shines more and the beautiful sights and smells of the flowers and new life fill our world once again. This year our world as we know it has come to a screeching halt and lives have been turned upside down. Essential Workers away from their families keeping us comfortable and cared for while in their minds they are fearful for their own families. People are being asked to work from home at the same time as helping their children navigate these new ways of learning. Others are furloughed because they were deemed not essential, wondering how they are going to take care of their families. Finally, not being able to visit loved ones who live at home or who are bound to living in a facility is heartbreaking on a whole new level for those that are alone as well as those who long to visit. We cannot let this situation take away the hope and promise of new beginnings that this holiday represents. Celebrate the Mothers/women in your life for they are the ones who will provide unconditional love and support to help us get through this! Whether you send them flowers, wine or drive by and see them through windows or appropriate social distancing measures, just celebrate and let them know we care and we need them now more than ever!

Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Som e older hom es m ay not even have three-pronged outlets, so this w ill necessitate an update as w ell. Page 16

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. And they, in turn, reach out to complete the circle. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Seal cracks and gaps around your home’s windows, doors, and vents. These can be a considerable source of energy loss, allowing conditioned air to escape and unconditioned air to infiltrate your home, placing stress on your furnace and air conditioner in the process. An easy DIY solution is to caulk around windows, doors, and vents, and install or replace worn weatherstripping. An average home loses up to 30 percent of its energy through air leaks, so sealing your home is a worthwhile exercise.
Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Welcoming
By Keith Roach, M.D.
“Have You Ever Smoked?” ---
Dr. Matthew Sheldon to our Corfu Location 24 East Main St. (Route 33), Corfu, NY
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question that I’d love to see answered in your column sometime. My husband recently had major surgery. Before the surgery, they asked if he has ever smoked. (Husband is 77.) He answered that when he was 9, he smoked a cigarette. He is now in the computer as an ex-smoker, and the nurse told us she is “required by law” to provide him with information on quitting. When physicians ask, “Have you ever smoked?” do they really want to hear about one cigarette, smoked almost 70 years ago? Is this meaningful information, in medical terms? -- S.S. ANSWER: There are very important reasons to know a person’s smoking history, especially when someone is about to undergo surgery. Current smokers should know that quitting well before surgery can reduce risks of surgical complications. The anesthesiologist can be extra-vigilant for breathing issues. Some of these points are valid for ex-smokers who have recently quit or who were very heavy smokers. Of course, one cigarette at age 9 is meaningless, and anytime I hear “required by law” I wonder if it’s really true. In this case, I doubt it: Why give ex-smokers information on quitting? It makes no sense. Primary care providers like me ask about smoking because a significant history of smoking increases heart disease risk, so I might be more likely to recommend treatment to reduce that risk (for example, in a person with elevated blood pressure or cholesterol who otherwise doesn’t quite meet criteria for drug treatment). Also, people who smoked more than 1 pack per day for 30 years, or the equivalent, should have a discussion about whether screening for lung cancer is appropriate. Finally, it’s easier to answer if you have never been a smoker. Some people who smoke socially don’t consider themselves smokers but would still benefit from advice to stop. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I took a sleep study and slept on my back all night because I was wired up and couldn’t sleep on my side. After a couple of hours, I was told that I have moderate sleep apnea. I snore when I’m on my back, but not when I’m on my side. Do you think I really have sleep apnea? -- T.M. ANSWER: Obstructive sleep apnea very often goes unrecognized. It is caused by the soft tissue in the neck obstructing the airway; the muscles relax while you are asleep, closing the airway. This is indeed much more likely to happen when lying on the back (we use the anatomical term “supine”), and generations of spouses have learned that turning a snorer on the side is a good way to get him or her to quit snoring. Snoring is caused by the very same process that leads to sleep apnea; in fact, snoring is a significant risk factor, with up to a third of snorers having the condition. I believe the sleep study. While I am sure you would have demonstrated less obstruction if you could sleep on your side, you still are likely to have some obstruction during the night, especially since we frequently change position while sleeping without knowing it. However, there are many different treatments for sleep apnea, and you should talk with your doctor about which is right for you. You need not jump to the most aggressive treatments. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Please contact us at 716-677-2273 www.wnyurology.com RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

ike many businesses during this COVID-19 pandemic, Red Osier Landmark Restaurant has faced many challenges, including temporarily pausing indoor dining. Fortunately, the restaurant has been able to remain open for curbside service. For owners Steve Foster and Tim Adams, staying open meant finding opportunities to give back to the communities that have rallied around them. “We have moved completely to curbside service,” said Foster. “We are offering meals from $10-$30, creating price points for everyone, from those struggling at this time to those who can afford to splurge. With only seven of us working, we are still offering our regular menu every night.” Their efforts have been met with enthusiastic response from local communities. “At first, we had a serious discussion as to whether we were going to shut down or not,” said Foster. “We were concerned people would not come out to Stafford for to-go meals, and we were proven wrong, that’s for sure!” Fridays, in particular, have been very successful. “The community has been absolutely wonderful,” Foster continued. “We typically served 100 fish fry meals in-house. Now, we are serving around 300 to-go! Many of our customers are local. We are very fortunate and feel very blessed.” Foster and Adams immediately knew they had to find ways to give back. “We started on Easter,” recalled Foster. “We wanted to do something for our staff, especially the ones that we don’t have work for right now. So, we put 80 bags of groceries together for all of our staff members - bus people, chef, office manager, everyone - so that they could have an Easter dinner.” Foster and Adams then began giving complementary thank you lunches to local essential workers. “We have done complementary meals for the local gas station, supermarket, our bank, the staff and residents of a local Veterans Home – it is all complementary,” explained Foster. “Yesterday, we brought meals to a local farm. Since we took over ownership of the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, one of our mottos has been, ‘Don’t forget about your community, or your community will forget about you.’ These are the kind of things we want our communities to remember.” Foster and Adams got the community involved, and their efforts received a name: Thankful Thursdays. Steve Foster delivers tasty Red Osier Landmark They also asked for suggestions of places Restaurant meals to LeRoy Village Green! to do thanks. “We received over 60 suggestions from corporate to local to farms,” they shared. “We put all the names in a bag and picked one; it was the farm.” The results have been incredible. “Every day we are getting thank you letters in the mail,” said Foster and Adams. “It keeps us going and is very meaningful to us. Some local children even brought us cookies and hand sanitizer with a note thanking us for all we are doing. If we didn’t have encouragement like this, I think we would get burned out.” In spite of their fatigue, Foster and Adams choose to find a silver lining. “If there is anything positive about this, it may be that our customers now realize that they can get our meals to go with the exact same quality as if they came and sat in our dining room,” said Adams. Foster agreed, adding, “We just reached our four-year anniversary of owning the restaurant. At first, there was little able to distinguish who we are from who the previous owners were. I think people now put my face and Tim’s face to the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, differentiating us from the one in Rochester. People are realizing that we are huge community members and very much

a part of this community. This is just distinguishing us from the Rochester one even more.” Adams and Foster look forward to reopening their restaurant. “I can tell you this,” said Foster, “as soon as they give us the green light, these doors will be open faster than anyone can think!” Changes are also underway. “We are planning a grand reopening,” they said. “Four years ago, when we took ownership, there really wasn’t a reopening, but this time we are changing uniforms and remodeling the bar. There are a lot of in-house preparation going on so that when we do reopen, it will be better than ever.”

We have an amazing head chef on board, and we have been working closely with him.” Adams and Foster remind families that although this will be a different kind of summer, particularly for graduating seniors, Red Osier Landmark Restaurant food trucks will be available to cater graduation parties and other events once the restrictions are lifted. Adams and Foster remain optimistic. “We all believe the years to come are going to be the best years for our restaurant.”

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

SENIOR NEWS LINE
When
By Matilda Charles
Communication becomes difficult… Trouble communicating with others can be a symptom of various disorders. Difficulty conveying words or emotions can be a condition of autism spectrum disorder, but quite frequently it occurs when a neurological injury affects the portion of the brain responsible for language. The National Aphasia Association states that aphasia is an impairment of language that affects the comprehension or the production of speech as well as the ability to read and write. Aphasia results from an injury to the brain, including head trauma, brain tumors, infections, and stroke. The Cleveland Clinic notes a person with aphasia may experience difficulty speaking, writing, reading, and understanding language. Impairments can range from mild to very severe (nearly impossible to communicate). While aphasia may only affect one area of communication, usually limitations occur across many areas. One of the more common symptoms of aphasia is word-finding issues. This can be characterized by challenges remembering the names of people, events or things. Sometimes an individual may not be able to think of the word he or she wants to say. In other instances, that person may say the wrong word entirely, such as using “rope” for the word “ball.” The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association also states that it is common for someone with aphasia to switch sounds in words, like “wishdasher” for “dishwasher.” Often sentences are difficult to come by, and single words may be easier.
Are we bored yet?
Being bored isn’t good, especially for seniors. We need to keep our brain cells active, even if we can’t get out of the house for any mental stimulation due to the coronavirus. And we need to find ways to move each day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes at a time, to keep our muscles strong. Look at YouTube.com for mild in-place exercises for seniors. Go online to find a kids’ basketball hoop and soft ball you can hang over the door. Look for a dartboard with magnetic darts. If you have an old Nintendo Wii console, hook it up and get some exercise with the bowling and tennis. If you have an indoor hobby, call your closest store and ask if they have curbside pickup or can mail supplies to you. Put “online craft tutorials” in your internet browser for new ideas. Tune up your guitar and order new strings. Find your old piano books if you have a piano. To keep your brain stretched, if you get a newspaper, do the puzzles, even the ones you normally don’t try. Go online for other puzzles you can print out or complete online. Go to puzzles.usatoday.com for a wide variety of online games. With the crossword puzzles you can choose your skill level (hints versus no hints). Use your keyboard to type in each letter. Try jigsaw puzzles, spelling games, backgammon (play against an opponent or the computer) or mahjong. Also look at Boatload Puzzles (www.boatloadpuzzles.com) for 40,000 crossword puzzles. For real brain stretchers look to Merriam-Webster (www.merriam-webster. com/word-games) or AARP (games.aarp.org). For short-term memory games, look at BrainCurls.com. Meanwhile, here’s a puzzle for you. What is the next letter in this sequence? O T T F F S S __ The answer will be at the end of my next column.
Trouble communicating also extends to a person with aphasia having challenges understanding what others are saying, particularly when they speak fast or in long sentences. The situation may be exacerbated when it is noisy or a person is in a group setting. Aphasia can affect anyone. However, it is more common in those who are middle-aged and older. The NAA says roughly 180,000 people are diagnosed with aphasia each year. Even though brain injury is a primary cause of aphasia, it also can create other language-related issues, such as weakness in the muscles that control the face or mouth or an inability to move the lips or tongue in the right way to make sounds. People with aphasia can benefit from working with a speech-language pathologist as early as possible. This professional can present many strategies to help manage deficits or potentially return some measure of communication. Augmentative and alternative communication, such as using images or a computer to tell what a person wants, may be options in more severe cases of aphasia. Aphasia affects many people and can rob them of the ability to communicate effectively without intervention. TF206030 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

(NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas:

FOUR IDEAS FOR HEALTH CARE PLANNING IN RETIREMENT

1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts.
cdgonyea@yahoo.com
HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.
2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office today at 888-921-3793.

Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile addition to anyone’s diet.
THE HISTORY OF CORSAGES
N on-D enominational
The term “corsage” was once a reference to the bodice of a woman’s dress. The first corsages were actually worn on the bodice, which is the part of a woman’s dress that is above the waist, and some believed the corsage could ward off evil spirits. According to PollenFloralDesign.com, by the 1900s, corsages were worn closer to the shoulder than the bodice. At this time, the flowers were pinned on upside down, with the bow at the top. The corsages were also larger at this time than they are today. The tradition of giving corsages to young ladies on their prom nights is relatively recent. In fact, many historians agree that this practice likely began in the 20th century in the United States when gentlemen would typically arrive to pick up their prom dates bearing bouquets of flowers for their dates’ parents. The young men would then remove one flower from the bouquet and attach it to their dates’ dress.

The MacDonald family have made beautiful masks for our family and many other home school families like us! A big shout out and lots of prayers for them! Let us hope this ends soon! I want to thank my neighbors in the Hillsboro Cove area in Webster. My husband and I take our nightly walk and recently came across the most awesome window decorations. The neon lights & positive message was just what the doctor ordered! What a great idea! You have made us look forward to our walks! I am so grateful for the dedicated work of school employees and am thoroughly satisfied with how my tax dollars have been spent during the building closure.
I agree with the person who wrote how there are those who defiantly disobey and go out and who do not do the social distancing to boot. How about when and if they get the coronavirus, they waive their right to a ventilator so that some other poor soul can have use of it. They put all the first responders and those in the medical profession at risk. Some people would not care about others and just want to do what they want to do, unless it bit them in the you know where. They would be the first one to boohoo if they were to get sick. Too late then! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

That is indeed great advice. I must admit that sometimes I am guilty of picking up items, and then not buying them. I usually must do that to look at the expiration dates on an item. If the date is not good, it has to go back on the shelf, but in the times we are living in, I wholeheartedly agree that we need to be careful about such things, and I will make a conservative effort to think twice before doing so, although I don’t want to buy food that has already expired. I, for one, wonder why more than one person goes out shopping. I go out by myself and do the grocery shopping for my family. At least, I have that right. I also wonder why some have their adult children drop by while the rest of us obey the restrictions. Just want to reiterate in the post of 4-3-20: if you see someone begging for money for food, yes, they are drug addicts. My son was one

Thank you to every school employee, in every district, for providing the outstanding effort and creativity required to make distance learning work. Teachers are providing instruction in a new format, administrators working tirelessly to provide resources, counselors checking in and sharing information, coaches developing workouts, Secretaries getting work to kids and back to teachers, tech departments sharing resources, custodians thoroughly cleaning, food service and transportation getting meals out, and students for continuing to value education. School buildings are closed, but everyone continues to work overtime. Thank you all!
Yet in the midst of it, I have seen much love and kindness being spread around. I want to thank local businesses, community groups, county boards, and individuals who have reached out to essential workers during this time to encourage us. Thank you for the meals, cards, yard signs, gifts, and much more that you have done to support and encourage me and my coworkers. As a healthcare worker, it has been my privilege to serve the families in our communities as I care for their elderly loved ones during this uncertain time. May the Lord bless you all with the peace that passes all understanding, which comes through Jesus Christ. - Anna Kranz, Livonia, NY
These past few weeks have brought our communities concern, anxiety, and hardship. of them and has told us this. The money is for drugs. There are many food kitchens in Rochester. If you feel the need to help, bring them a meal from McDonald’s, buy them a bus pass to get to a food kitchen, give them some warm clothes (even though they might sell them). Never give them money.
not pack them well in those little bins, and on windy days all their recyclable garbage blows all over into the streets and people’s lawns for others to have to clean up . Please be respectable and pack your trash in tightly. With the virus going on, others should not have to pick up your trash. Keep our country clean!
During our daily walks on [local road] in [local town], it’s amazing to see the amount of garbage that is thrown out of vehicles as they drive down our road in and around the area, including cans, bottles, restaurant trash, etc. Someone is throwing empty single shot bottles of whiskey out their car window. Every day, there seems to be a new one the road. Can you please stop throwing your garbage out the car window? Thank you.
I am curious how the writer who was upset that people are still going out, going to markets knows this? The writer even overheard a woman who said she was not staying home. How did you hear this if you are staying home?
Do the recyclables really get recycled? I was informed they do not. Problem with them is people who put their recyclables out do

Seriously, you are going to rant about a painted rock. Did you ever stop and think that whoever painted this wants to spread a little joy? Then you called it trash on top of it. Why not just let it be? Do not be rude.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.
