HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

Batavia Business & Professional Women’s Club, Inc. Offers Connection and Community By David Fish
P
oised to celebrate their 100-year anniversary next year, the Batavia Business & Professional Women’s Club, Inc. (BBPWC) has been helping Genesee County women build stronger relationships with each other and their communities since 1921. Standing out among the many all-men’s clubs of the day, the BBPWC dedicated themselves to civic endeavors and fundraising for worthy local causes and programs. In addition to the support and fellowship of likeminded women, Club members experience the satisfaction of making a difference. The BBPWC raises thousands of dollars annualy for both GVEP students as well as Genesee County High School Seniors. “We celebrate students who have received scholarships,” said BBPWC President Shannon Plath. “We offer seven scholarships for Genesee County schools and GVEP scholarships. We also give five service awards based on the nominations of others.” BBPWC Club members, led by Plath along with Lee Doyle, Danielle Torcello, Michelle Gillard, Donna West, Kathy Hameister, Joy Hume, Lorie Currier and Vicki Wolak – officers and board members – typically fundraise throughout the year, both to finance these scholarships and to support local charitable organizations and programs. “We also have a Community Service Committee which identifies volunteer needs,” stated Plath. “Our members have several different strengths, skill sets and abilities, including leadership capability, which they use to help us best serve our community.” “We also like to focus on community service and give back as much as possible,” said Plath. “Whether that means bringing water and granola bars to our local Habitat for Humanity group or donating to the Salvation Army during Thanksgiving when they are giving meals to families in need, we do it. We have also helped make bags for kids in need with the Youth Bureau. We have supported All Babies Cherished as they support local families; in fact, we plant their flower beds every year.”
250 people with its services, up from 100 prior to COVID-19. We recently collected cards of encouragement for those supported by Meals on Wheels and sent them out on Friday, May 22nd.” “That is a lot of what we do now,” she continued. “We are making phone calls, checking in on people and taking them little mementoes, letting them know we are always thinking of them even if they are unable to attend or participate in current meetings and events, focusing on our elderly. We are also in the process of giving our scholarship winners and service awards, which we have to do on ZOOM.” Plath, having been a part of BBPWC for three years, truly believes the Club is well worth her time and effort. “For me personally, it is about building relationships with other ladies in the community, and it has given me a way to reach out to and serve my community, as well. That is partly why I decided to get involved. I love the network we have with this great group of ladies, and we do everything we can to give back to our community. We are an organization worth looking into. If it interests you, we encourage you to get involved!” For more information or to join, visit https://bataviabpw.wordpress.com or email bataviabpw@gmail.com.
Members of the Batavia Business & Professional Women’s Club, Inc.
The BBPWC meets once each month, choosing a different location in Genesee County at which to gather for dinner. “These meetings enable ladies to come together, enjoy a meal, network, learn about the different businesses involved, and empower each other,” Plath observed. “We conduct our necessary business, and we socialize, talk, plan and meet new members. Our leadership also meets monthly.” New members are encouraged to make new friends, learn more about member businesses and to embrace BBPWC values of giving of one’s self and serving one’s community. The advent of COVID-19 naturally brought changes to the BBOWC. “We started holding ZOOM meetings,” shared Plath. “In the beginning, it was tough. Fundraising has also been a challenge. Still, we have collected money for Salvation Army to support their food pantry at Northgate. Meals on Wheels are reaching about

Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
When a Loose Dog Approaches DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This weekend while hiking with my daughter on a public trail, a big dog ran straight up to us and started barking fiercely. We were frightened and didn’t know what to do, so we stood still until the dog ran off. What should we have done instead? -- Paul in Lynn, Massachusetts DEAR PAUL: You and your daughter did the right thing by standing still when the dog approached. Running away or waving your arms may further excite a dog and incite an attack. Preventive Vet has an excellent post detailing what to do when approached by a strange dog, including common body language that can help you interpret whether the dog is relaxed, alert or feeling threatened (go to www.preventivevet.com and search for “off-leash dog”). Here are additional steps to take when approached: 1. Stay calm and observe the dog’s body language and behavior as it approaches. 2. Place your walking stick in front of you, between you and the dog. 3. If it comes close, put out a hand and say “Go home!” or “Sit!” 4. Startle a dog that doesn’t leave: Bang your stick against the ground (don’t wave or swing it) and yell “Go home!” Another recommendation is to carry dog treats on walks. If a loose dog approaches and won’t leave, toss a treat away from you (but in their line of sight) and when they go to eat it, calmly depart the area. Some owners will take issue with the idea of strangers tossing treats at their dog. But letting their dogs run off leash and out of view is risky to the dog and to other people, and just plain irresponsible. Ideally, dogs should be trained to stay within sight of their owners and well socialized to other humans; otherwise, they need to be on a leash.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment.

The entryway to a home is the first thing guests experience when coming inside. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning. Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Switch to LED light bulbs. Some LED light bulbs have a lifespan of up to 10 years, and are 80 to 90 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs. They are generally more environmentally friendly than CFLs and safer, too, since they produce less heat. The return on investment is excellent, as LED bulbs often pay for themselves through energy savings within the first year.

Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair. Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Finding Fresh Food Many of us haven't been eating right lately. Sometimes the stores are out of what we want; sometimes we can't get an available pickup time. But there are a few other safe options for getting what we need. Community Supported Agriculture: Farmers near you like to know in advance if their crops will have a market once it's time to harvest, and they sell "subscriptions" that allow you, as a shareholder, to pick up fresh food once a week. Do an internet search for "community supported agriculture" in your area. Look for ones that sell more than just vegetables. Some also have eggs, butter, bread, jams, flowers and meat. Farm Stands: You'll see these along the road -- a small farmer or gardener who sells his produce at the end of the driveway out of a small stand. Stop and take a look, and ask questions. Most of them will have a limited variety, but it will all be fresh, probably picked just that morning. You might have to point to the items you want so they don't have people touching the food. That's a safety point you'll appreciate. Ask about other foods that will be available, and make it a point to stop by. And remember, no matter where you go, look for marks on the ground for places to stand six feet apart. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
Celebrating Father’s Day while social distancing To say that COVID-19 changed life as we know it would be an understatement. Many people likely never imagined how much their daily routines would be affected when this novel coronavirus was just a blip on the radar at the end of 2019. Social distancing may have become the new normal, but it doesn’t mean that holidays like Father’s Day have to be a washout. As evidenced by holidays that have already taken place amidst social distancing guidelines, people are finding creative ways to celebrate special occasions. Here are some ways to make Father’s Day special even while social distancing. · Turn to social apps. Virtual meeting applications, like Zoom, Skype and FaceTime provide invaluable opportunities to speak and connect face-to-face when in-person gatherings are not possible. They also can be used to break bread together or to play games or relay stories. · Deliver gifts. Take a few cues from the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus and plan to drop gifts and run. Seniors and people who have compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of contracting contagious illnesses. While it may be tempting to visit your father or grandfather in person, even a short visit could put his health at risk. Instead, leave gifts outside the house. For added fun, hide the gifts and provide scavenger hunt clues. · Dine out at home. If dining out was something you typically do on Father’s Day, replicate the experience at home. Try to recreate Dad’s favorite meal from the restaurant he loves or see if that restaurant offers curbside pickup. Transform the dining table into a restaurant table, or take the meal outdoors for some al fresco fun. Let kids serve as the wait staff. · Spend time together. One of the silver linings of social distancing is the opportunity for family members who reside under one roof to have more uninterrupted time together. Chances are having the kids nearby and sharing some stories and laughs together will be a perfect way for Dad to enjoy Father’s Day. With some creative thinking, dads across the county can still enjoy the special day they deserve. TF206039

I have family members basically in every field as essential workers, (nurse, officer, co, fabric store for masks, etc.) ,but the person I’d like to give extra love to is my mother who works every day to make sure you get your groceries. The amount of stress grocery store workers face is harrowing, and I commend you. I pray you don’t catch it from one of the people from the public. Keep hanging in there. You’re part of the strong and resilient. Continue to do your good so others can feed their families. Peggy at Top’s pharmacy in Hamlin is so nice to bring my prescription out to the car when I am unable to go in. Thank you for your kindness! Also, a shout out to Anthony, one of the pharmacist’s at Top’s. He is more than just someone who fills your prescription for you. He listens
Even I have to feed my family and get groceries every three weeks when we run out. Not all of us have internet to place the pickup orders, and I take every precaution: wearing gloves and my n95 mask when going out as well as disposing of the used gloves in a plastic bag in my car. I do not stay. I do not linger. I do not buy and browse. I write my list, get what I need, stay 6 feet away from people who still don’t do this. I check out. I heard her brag, and then I went home, shut in to do house projects. So yes, I need food to live. Hope that clarifies your confusion.

I went to [local store] over the weekend and was so proud to see young and old wearing masks. What a sharp contrast to those who are fighting for rights and do not see the need to wear masks! As one psychologist put it, “Some people just don’t like being told what to do.” I think he hit the nail on the head. So, in actuality, it really has nothing to do with liberty, but it is an attitude problem. It was a pleasure to see people doing the right thing, even if wearing a mask could be a challenge for some. It renewed my faith in society that there are those who will do the moral and ethical thing in such unsettling times. To the man in the grey hooded sweatshirt and white tennis shoes: Please kindly refrain from stealing the flowers that I and others work so diligently to plant. Your mother would not be amused nor your wife fooled by

if you have questions, and offers sound, practical advice. The other day, he even went the extra mile to come out from the pharmacy area, to show me something that perhaps my son should take. I had a choice to make, and I told him to pick, because I trust his insight. Usually pharmacists can be clinical, counting pills behind the glass partitions without having much if any interaction with the customers who come in to pick up their prescriptions. This is not the case with Anthony! Thanks! I want to thank the mechanics for still working through this pandemic, for keeping doctors, nurses, truckers, and personal vehicles going. I am so appreciative of it. If it were not for them working on my car, I would not have been able to still work and get groceries for my family. I also want to thank their families to whom they go your cheap and thieving behavior for their Mother’s Day gift. Please go to a store and get a beautiful bouquet of flowers and possibly a card. It will be worth it when they see you actually put in the effort. Petty complaints do not deserve the space they take up. Look for the good in every situation! I also am tired of picking up others trash, but at least I can do so! Yes, it would be great if people picked up after themselves or better still, did not throw stuff along roads, but who do we have to blame? Were they ever taught to pick up after themselves? I detest people who use rat poison. Not only is it a horrible way to die, but it can have a ripple effect. I’ve seen it with my own eyes working for a vet for several years, like the cat who ate a mouse that had eaten poison. The vet did all he could do but the cat didn’t make it. Then there were the eagles I watch on the internet whose first

home after being in contact with our vehicles, putting their own families at risk. Just know you are appreciated during this time. I live on North Street and walk my dog on my property. To my surprise during the month of March, I was fascinated in finding beautifully painted, small rocks at the base of my trees, first one, then others. I had spoken of it to my family members, wondering if it might have been them. No one admitted, so I am assuming it was a kind, loving person, maybe even a family trying to spread love and sunshine during these uncertain days. I want you to know, whoever you are, I loved this gesture and looked forward to seeing these beautiful treasures. Thank you, thank you, thank you,
baby died because the dead rat its parent brought to the nest to feed it had died of rat poison; the baby eagle got some of the poison, which killed it. How do we know this? Wildlife people got the dead baby and did a necropsy (autopsy) on it. This was a symbol of our country, of our freedom, and man destroyed it. There are other ways to deal with mice and rats, humane ways, too. Try using traps or smelly things. They don’t like strong smelling stuff like ammonia or bleach or even Irish Spring hand soap, peppermint oil, tea bags, etc. Remember, if you live with woods all around you, learn to live with the creatures in those woods. God put every creature on this earth for a reason. Humans are destroying this earth. I read that millions of birds are gone now. After they go, we will have more insects to contend with. It all has a ripple effect.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Morning Stiffness Is Sign of Osteoarthritis --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 67-year-old black female who’s been diagnosed with “a little arthritis” in my right hip. Now retired from a desk job, I unfortunately still am not getting enough exercise. My issue is that after sitting for a length of time, I’m in excruciating pain and can’t stand up at all. Once I straighten up and get moving, the pain subsides. I’ve been told “you’re getting old,” but I’m not old! I’m about 30 pounds overweight. Also, when I stand for any length of time, my lower back aches. Would taking a morning walk and a yoga class alleviate this problem? I’m so embarrassed when I get out of my car or get up from the dinner table. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are many types of arthritis, and the answer to your question varies a bit depending on type. I think you probably have the most common form, osteoarthritis, so I’m going to answer you assuming that’s the case. Stiffness in the morning, quickly relieved by exercise, is a hallmark of osteoarthritis. It’s common, treatable and not something to be embarrassed about. Exercise is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis. It can be difficult to get started, but the more people exercise, the more they are able to do. Walking and yoga both are excellent ideas, but the best exercise is the one you will want to keep doing. Osteoarthritis affects a fair number of 67-year-olds, but it’s important to remember that it’s not your age that is causing the pain: It’s the arthritis. Although we know of no treatments that can reverse the course of osteoarthritis, medications (including a few supplements), exercise and physical therapy all can ease symptoms and improve function. Losing weight takes stress off the joints and is recommended, but is not easy. Finally, severe arthritis can be treated surgically, with a joint replacement. That’s not a procedure to take lightly or have done too early. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 85 years old. I have numbness in my hands -- sometimes the right, sometimes the left; sometimes both hands or not at all. It lasts only a while. My doctor feels that it’s a pinched nerve in my neck. Can you give me any advice? -- J.B. ANSWER: A pinched nerve in the neck becomes more prevalent as people age. The nerve can be compressed by bony structures in people with osteoarthritis in the neck (this is spinal stenosis), or by disk material in someone with a herniated disk. Having symptoms on both sides is less common than having symptoms consistently on one side only. A careful physical exam can give clues that this is the case, but an MRI or other imaging study is the best way to be sure of the diagnosis. Hand numbness also may be caused by the nerve being “pinched” in other locations: in the carpal tunnel in the wrist or in the cubital tunnel in the elbow. An EMG test can help sort out where this is coming from. It’s certainly possible to have carpal tunnel syndrome on both sides. My best advice is not to rush into surgery at any age, but especially not at age 85. Physical therapy can prevent many people from needing surgery. However, if numbness progresses to weakness, it’s time to reconsider. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW?
Partridge Real Estate Auction
While high school seniors on the cusp of graduating and moving on to college give ample thought to their college majors, many are likely to change majors at least once after enrolling in a college or university. According to the University of La Verne, between 50 and 70 percent of college students change majors at least once, and many of them will change their majors three times before they graduate. The University also reports that 50 percent of college graduates pursue careers that are not related to their majors. Career and personality assessments can help students determine which subjects they may want to study upon enrolling in a college or university. Such assessments can help students discover their interests, and then students can work with advisors and career counselors at their colleges or universities to find majors that align with those interests. High school seniors on their way to college in the coming months can rest easy that, even if they don’t know what to study when they arrive on college campuses this fall, many of their fellow freshmen are equally uncertain.

Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.
CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues. 1. How do I get rid of spiny sow thistle and Canada thistle? Anne B. Spiny sowthistle is a winter annual that is actually in the sunflower family and not a true thistle. Spiny sowthistle spreads by seed. It flowers from late spring through the summer, depending on the location. The flower is yellow, resembling a dandelion, but forms in a corymbiform cluster. The root of spiny sowthistle is a taproot. It is found in waste areas and other open areas such as roadsides and thin turf. It can be controlled by mowing which prevents the stem and
flowers from forming and eliminates seed formation. The plant can also be cut out. A postemergent herbicide application is effective when spiny sowthistle is young and actively growing but should not be needed if the location will be mowed. For best results, treat prior to bolting.
the first time by early June. Mowing or repeated cutting may be used to help prevent the production of seeds and starving the plant. Persistent removal of the shoots before they attain several leaves will exhaust the storage roots within two years and eliminate the weed. One study found a 21 day weeding schedule was optimal. Postemergent applications of a systemic herbicide may be used. Fall is typically the best time for these treatments when the plant is translocating
food reserves to the rooting structures. Other good times are during the early bolting stage when plants are 6-10” tall and during the bud to flowering stage. Some of the common lawn weed control materials are effective. Spot treatments are good for limited stands. Glyphosate products labeled for the use are effective. Lawns should be properly maintained to promote a healthy, dense turf that with managed mowing will compete well with weeds.
Canada Thistle is a rhizomatous perennial. Since Canada thistle has a deep root system, the only mechanical approach for controlling this weed is to exhaust the storage roots (exhaust perennial roots). Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

HOST A SPORTS VIEWING PARTY TO REMEMBER ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Scout out the neighborhood Use mobile phone apps to see where the locals tend to congregate and plan trips to these restaurants and other shops. Over time, you probably will start to see some familiar faces. Drive around town and get a feel for side streets instead of the main thoroughfares. It’s often off the beaten path where you happen upon the greatest finds.
Hundreds of millions of people across the globe enjoy sports, and many are fond of gathering with fellow fans to watch their favorite teams play, whether in-person or on television. Viewing parties are a great way to watch the big game with fellow fans, and such gatherings don’t have to require all that much effort on the part of hosts. Make it a potluck affair. Potluck affairs make perfect sense for sports viewing parties, so don’t be surprised if guests offer to whip up some homemade guacamole or a buffet-style dish for the big party. Encourage this, asking guests to share what they’re bringing with other invitees so there are no duplicate offerings. Vary the food and beverage menu. Chicken wings and beer might seem like go-to foods and beverages for the big game, but even sports bars are increasingly recognizing sports fans’ desire for healthy foods. It’s still acceptable to serve staples like wings, nachos, chips, and pretzels, but try to provide some healthy fare like celery and salad as well. Even wholegrain pretzels might be more enticing to guests watching what they eat. In addition, provide alternatives to alcohol, such as water, soda and juice, for guests who are abstaining. Upgrade your television. Projection screens are go-to options for many avid sports fans, But projectors and screens may stretch some sports fans’ budgets. A 4K ultra-HD television can be an affordable option depending on the size of the television, and such devices provide incredibly crisp pictures that can make sports fans feel as though they’re inside the stadium cheering on their favorite players. Purchase a sound system. Today’s televisions are sleek and thin. While that saves space and provides more aesthetic appeal than the bulky televisions of yesteryear, thin designs leave little room for sound tech. As a result, it can be hard to hear what’s going on in the game without a sound system. Sound systems are relatively inexpensive; just make sure to purchase one that is compatible with your television. Sports viewing parties tend to be easygoing affairs that don’t require the level of planning of more formal gatherings.

Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store. AUTOMOTIVE

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Native Southerners might well be surprised to learn that the word “y’all” dates to 1631! It was first used by the English scholar William Lisle in the sentence, “The captive men of strength I gave to you, the weaker sold; and this y’all know is true.”

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
