Does Intermittent Fasting Raise the Risk Of Heart Disease?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a recent headline that said people who fast intermittently have an increased risk of heart disease. Is there merit to this story? -- K.O.S.
ANSWER: Intermittent fasting is an increasingly common weight-loss strategy. The two most common approaches of intermittent fasting are alternate-day fasting (eating nothing one day, then whatever you want the next) and timerestricted feeding (eating at certain times throughout the day, usually during an eight-hour time frame).
The published data on the benefits of these diets show short-term weight loss (i.e., 12 weeks), but no long-term weight loss (1 year), compared to the standard dietary advice.
SHOULD ADULTS GET DENTAL SEALANTS?
There is evidence of potential harm from intermittent fasting. Studies have shown an increased risk of eating disorders (particularly binge eating). One study showed that disordered eating worsened in those assigned to an intermittent-fasting schedule. However, other studies do not show this.
The concern for disordered eating is highest among younger and female populations, who are at the most risk for eating disorders, and I advise against intermittent fasting for a person with a history of an eating disorder.
The study you read about was presented as an abstract in the March meeting of the American Heart Association; it is not yet published or peer-reviewed. But it did show that people who report an intermittent-fasting diet (specifically those who ate over an 8-hour time frame) were at a higher risk for death from heart disease than those who ate over a 12-16 hour time frame.
However, this wasn’t a controlled study, and it is likely that people who chose a time-restricted eating pattern already had issues that put them at a higher risk for heart disease. Still, given the absence of long-term benefits, I don’t generally recommend a time-restricted diet or intermittent fasting to my patients.
My colleagues in weight medicine consider intermittent fasting to be an option that helps a subset of people. There are some people who do benefit from this type of diet, and as long as they are eating well and are being monitored by their physician, they should continue to follow their diet if it is working for them.

Dental sealants protect molars and premolars (teeth with chewing surfaces) from cavity-causing bacteria. Children are at highest risk for cavities from ages 6 to 14, so it’s recommended that kids receive dental sealants as soon as their permanent teeth come in. Some dentists even recommend sealants for baby teeth that are prone to cavities due to deep grooves in the chewing surfaces of molars that easily trap bacteria. Adults and anyone prone to cavities also make good candidates for dental sealants. Permanent teeth at any age, as long as they don’t have existing fillings or decay, can be better protected with a dental sealant. Sealants last around five years and can be placed after a cleaning during a routine visit.
Taking care of your teeth is one of our favorite subjects, which is why we bring you our weekly dental care column. We feel it is important to keep you up-to-date on the latest procedures, materials, and innovations available in dentistry today and to inform our readers how the many benefits of modern oral care can enhance their lives via a stunning smile. Call us, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, for an appointment at 585.343.4246. We’re easy to find at 6 Batavia City Centre.
P.S. Sealants are one of the most commonly used preventative dental treatments.

Empowering Women:
Toni Coleman’s Community with RocHAUS Collective
BY SUZIE WELLS
RocHAUS Collective in Springhouse Commons Plaza has quickly become more than a typical salon. Owner Toni Coleman’s vision was to create a space that goes beyond skin deep beauty, fostering collaboration with artists, non-profits, female entrepreneurs, and local businesses.
Coleman reflects on her journey: “If anyone told me months ago where I would be right now, I would have laughed.” A Rochester native, Coleman believes her life is proof that one’s starting point does not dictate their outcome. Her childhood passion for collecting unique objects fueled her creative imagination and inspired the interior design of the space in Springhouse Commons Plaza.
Coleman says she’s a bit “obsessed with interior design and art,” so in curating every detail of the stunning interior, she says the space is “a collection of all [her] favorite things under one roof.” e interior uses sand-colored hues and organic textures to reflect nature. She explains that her design blending vintage items she’s collected over the years with modern elements represents “the ebb and flow of life and the everevolving process of living.”
Coleman’s goal is to create a communal space where people can relax and feel pampered, taking a moment for themselves despite the hustle and bustle of the day’s multi-tasking. e salon even features a diverse selection of teas, seltzers, and wine to add to the ambiance. Coleman prides herself on supporting the overall well-being of all who walk through the doors.
At 55, she says she embraces the beauty of imperfections and recognizestheadage,Whenonedoorcloses, anotherdooropens. When the salon she worked at for twenty years closed abruptly, Coleman says all the stylists had “such a beautiful connection of friendship that we couldn’t imagine no longer working together.” at sparked Coleman’s inspiration for RocHAUS Collective.
Coleman explains that each stylist now at the salon played a key role in creating the Collective. Stephanie Wishmere, her husband and father-in-law did the plumbing and installation of the shampoo area and the backroom with Plumbing Plus. Krystle Elliott’s husband designed and installed the exterior sign, door decals, business cards, and gi certificates with Rotolite. MaryLynn Aureli’s family business, Aureli Landscaping, did the incredible gardening of the front beds and the tile work inside. And Sherrie Carr’s family electrician business, Canal Town Electric, provided the lighting arrangements and electrical work throughout the salon.
Together, through everyone’s hard work, RocHAUS Collective came together. Coleman says though some may call it luck that everything worked out as it did, she credits it to intention, fate, and community. She says, “Do all the things you love and are drawn to. It’s for a reason and a purpose.”
RocHAUS Collective’s success extends beyond hairstyling inspired by NYC and European style influences. Coleman says it’s always about so much more than hair. For her, it’s about female empowerment, creativity, and community.
e salon and its mission organically connects with local businesses and non-profits, while expanding their artistry to make others feel better about themselves. is message has already garnered attention from local beauty and wellness advocates. She says, “ ere has been a niche and need that has been missing. If you build it, they will come.” e Rochester Candle Company, Honeoye Remedies, Divanna Chocolates, and artisans like ceramist Suzanne Kumar have all fused their brands with the RocHAUS Collective name.
e salon’s impact goes beyond business relationships, too, as Coleman actively supports non-profits such as Gilda’s Club, YWCA, and Cameron House Ministries. She says, “I know what a new hairdo doesforsomeone.Yourexternalappearanceimpactsyourpsyche.Itcan be so empowering.” It’s not uncommon for Coleman to give her own time and care to help women who’ve recently undergone chemotherapy style and care for their wigs. She explains that being responsible for self-care contributes to a person’s overall health and well-being, which makes taking care of someone’s appearance a very personal act.
In addition, for the past ten years, Coleman has collaborated with Gilda’s Club for their famed annual fashion show. She admits that she has a so spot for helping out young women, in particular, and has volunteered her skills o en to support young female entrepreneurs.
Looking ahead, Coleman plans to host a book club focusing on female empowerment and wellness in the new year. RocHAUS Collective, a blend of New York City and European influences, represents an enhanced salon experience with a commitment to empowering women. For more information, visit https://rochaus.salon.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT
Consult a professional. While many hardscaping additions can be handled by novices, large-scale projects, such as patios and decking, can change the grading of the yard. Portable vs. Standby Generators
Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features)
Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.
• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.
• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.
With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

RETAIL INDUSTRY HELPED
DAY
Father’s Day arrives the third Sunday in June and presents a special way to show the fathers in one’s life how much they are cherished. People shower dads with gifts but may not know just how Father’s Day came to be. The concept of Father’s Day was inspired by Mother’s Day celebrations and was initiated by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to do something to honor her single father.TheconceptofFather’sDay was slow to take root. However, the retail industry helped propel Father’s Day to a national holiday.

In the early days of Father’s Day, Dodd worked with her local YMCA and local churches to adopt what was supposed to be a religiously influenced holiday. But in the early 1900s, dads did not necessarily have the same hands-on role that manyfathershavetoday.Cartoons published in newspapers, such as the Washington Star in 1913, portrayed Dad as the breadwinner and a distant fellow who wasn’t as involved as his wife in day-to-day interaction with his children. A 1915 issue of the St. Johns Herald and Apache News from Arizona joked that fathers probably didn’t want another holiday and would be more content to drink, smoke and sleep in late. Dodd and others realized that marketing would be key to Father’s Day’s success.
Clothing manufacturers, people who made tobacco and other merchants of products made for men found Father’s Day a way to sell merchandise. It just took a while for them to come around.
AFather’sDayCouncilwasstarted in the 1930s and was propelled by a group called the New York Associated Menswear Retailers. Many people joke that, because neckties are so often given on Father’s Day, the necktie industry must’ve had a hand in endorsing Father’s Day. And there is truth to that. The council was responsible for selling shirts, hats and, of course, neckties.
In 1938, the National Council for the Promotion of Father’s Day was formed, primarily due to poor menswear retail sales. Dry goods, clothing and tobacco associations help promote Father’s Day, and after they held a “Father’s Day Sports Day” parade in 1941, Father’s Day sales increased, and the holiday became more popular.

Here’s A Tip
• Use a bandanna to strain coffee if you've accidentally had a filter bust. It works. I first used this tip when camping, but I have used it at home, too. e coffee goes through it faster than a paper filter, which is fine when it's already brewed, since you lose less heat. T.R. in Arkansas
• Recycling notes: Cardboard that's greasy or foodcaked is just not recyclable. It's trash. On the plus side, your glass jars don't have to be perfectly clean, nor your cans crushed, in order to take them to the recycling center or drop curbside if your community has a plan in place.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP
Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS
Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

Résumé rules have changed, and graduates will be best served by companies that know the ins and outs of writing effective résumés. Employers often use digital scanning software to sift through applicants, so knowing which keywords and tags to use can ensure a résumé gets noticed. Costs can range from $100 to $200, depending on the services desired.

3/4 cup Apple Butter
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

10 pieces bacon
10 extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional)
Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed bakingsheetwithparchmentpaper.
In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside.
In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate.
Wraponebaconslicearoundeach shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture.
Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and baste shrimp (2 minutes each time) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired.

The youth T-Ball/T-Shirts Commissioner, Josh! Your dedication to the kids did not go unnoticed. Coaches, parents, and kids alike have you to thank for a successful and fun season. We hope to continue with you as lead in the next year. Thank you again for everything; this baseball season was a great one!
Home Safe
To my neighbor who cut down the linden tree I loved the linden tree you cut down. Its leaves filled our windows. Its blossoms scented our house and yes, its leaves fell into our yard and its sap left drops on the car, but I didn’t care. I loved its shade and watched eastern bluebirds and robins and woodpeckers in that tree. I am heartbroken and will grieve its loss a very long time. I will also transplant one of its seedlings from my flower bed and hope I live long enough to see it grow into a tree half as big as the one you destroyed. Trees are a gift, especially as summers grow hotter. I would gladly have raked its leaves for you if that was the reason. All you had to do was ask. But people here rarely talk with one another. We may be neighbors but no one is very neighborly and while you think something on your property is yours alone, know that your tree was also my tree and that what you do affects our entire community. Let’s please do a better job of being neighbors to all the living things we are lucky enough to live with.
Working disabled
On June 5, 2024, our dog went missing. I immediately shared the news on Facebook and contacted the Hamlin Dog Shelter. Soon after, a neighbor relayed that her friend had spotted a couple with a brown dog on the parkway. During our search, the Hamlin Dog Control Office informed us that they had found her, and she was safe at the shelter. The couple had notified law enforcement who stayed with our dog until Dog Control Officer Dave Maynard could pick her up. We were lucky in this situation and are deeply grateful to the observant passerby on the parkway, our caring neighbors, the couple who looked after her, the police, and Dave Maynard for their part in bringing our dog back to us. The closeknit nature of a small town certainly has its benefits. A sincere THANK YOU to all who were involved.
Several times I saw a person with a department store blue uniform/vest going into work. They parked in the closest handicap spot. This person had no wheelchair, no cane and seemed to walk just fine. I have to wonder how he’s able to work yet can’t walk into work unless using the closest spot. I’m so tired of people with all these handicap tags abusing the system. I SAW THE PERSON INSIDE WALKING around. How many hours is this spot going to be taken when others who truly need it don’t have it available? Another problem is people sitting in the handicap spot waiting for people. A suggestion would be dropping them off by the door and then sitting in front of the store. If you’re in your vehicle you’re not going to get a ticket. There’s not enough handicap spots for the people who abuse them and the people who truly need them.

Q&A Master Gardeners with the
My neighbors have been doing a No Mow May and I’m worried about ticks. What can I do to protect my lawn and gardens fromticks?
Embracing a change in mowing habits throughout the year, rather than just in May, can have a multitude of benefits for your landscape. By allowing your lawn to grow to a height of 4 inches before mowing, you create an environment that isconducivetothesurvivalandflourishing of beneficial insects. These insects play a crucial role in pollination, pest control, and overall ecosystem health.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
When you mow at a higher height, you provide shelter and food sources for beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies, and ladybugs. These insects contribute to the pollination process, ensuring the reproduction of plants and the production of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, theyactasnaturalpredators, keeping pest populations in check and reducing the need for harmful pesticides.
Additionally, establish barriers between your outdoor spaces and potential tick habitats. Remember to don protective clothing and apply insect repellents whenever venturing outdoors. By implementing these precautions, you can effectively minimize the risk of ticks while respecting your neighbors’ commitment to No Mow May.
While your neighbors embrace the No Mow May movement, it is still essential to ensure the protection of your lawn and gardens against the threat of ticks. Maintain regular lawn mowing practices, diligently remove leaf litter and brush piles, and utilize effective tick repellents.
Furthermore, with every choice we make to be sustainable there are trade off. I believe this change in mowing habits promotes healthier soil and reduces the need for excessive watering and fertilizers. Longer grass helps to retain moisture, reducing water runoff
andpromotingwaterconservation.Italso encouragesdeeperrootgrowth, resulting in a more resilient and drought-tolerant lawn. Keeping your grass at 4” doesn’t promote ticks as they prefer un-mowed grass.
So,by extending your mowing practices beyond May and maintaining a higher grass height of 4 inches, you not only create a welcoming habitat for beneficial insects but also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable landscape overall without increasing the tick population.

Leaving An Estate To Charity
One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed.
When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.
Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Time for summer fun with your dog
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dad finally let us adopt a puppy a few months ago, and I can’t wait for summer vacation, when I can spend all day with him! He’s got lots of energy, but we’ve been training him to follow commands so he doesn’t run off. What are some outside games that I can play with him? -- Kerry B., Winchester, Virginia
DEAR KERRY: You’re going to have a wonderful summer! It sounds like you and your family have been diligent about training your dog in basic obedience so that he’ll come back to you on command, sit and stay in place. And he’ll be old enough -- and have his most important vaccinations out of the way -- to stay healthy outside or when encountering other dogs.
Here’s a few great off-leash games to play:
Fetch: e gold standard game for dogs remains a favorite. Just grab a tennis ball and toss it.
Frisbee: Energetic dogs can chase these flying discs all day.
Agility training: Start with simple tasks like going under or over obstacles.
Swimming: Fill a kiddie pool in the backyard and let your dog splash around on a hot day.
Tracking: Have your dog follow a line of treats to a “jackpot” (a toy or food). Extend the distance between treats each session.
Remember, only take your dog off leash in a safe area or approved offleash location. A fenced-in backyard is ideal, but if you don’t have one of those, go to a dog park or municipal, state or federal park that has an off-leash area. Some of these games, like agility and tracking, can be done on-leash. Most importantly, have fun!
Acorn enjoys playing dress up as long as he can go outside afterwards

DID YOU KNOW?
According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.
