Martin Miskell began his Arc career as Director of Finance at the LivingstonWyoming chapter in 2002, becoming Associate Executive Director/Chief Financial Officer in 2007 and Executive Director in 2015. He calls this an exciting time. “The merger will offer all four counties more program and service opportunities for individuals and Martin Miskell, served,” Executive Director families Miskell said. “We have experienced changes over the last decade in the field of disabilities and this merger will make the agency and its services more fiscally sustainable and poised for the future.”

Hey You! To the young man in the little purple car that seems to think he has to speed through town. Your plate number has been turned into the cops. Slow down! There are young children here.

S E V RA St. Agnes Cemetery Many, many thanks to Jim Harrington for his organization, expert tree trimming, and volunteer hours at St. Agnes Cemetery! For five weeks, Jim selflessly gave of his time and talent in trimming trees and has earned that halo that only good people can see! Special thanks to Matt Weslowsk, The Gerwig Family, Kevin Van Allen, Richard Burke, Ken Farrell, Russ Ruter, Mike Cochrane, Sheriff Tom Dougherty, George Eblacker, Jerry Dupont, Jerry Dougherty, Tom Crye and crew, and a bunch of Avon Central students who donated their time. The St. Agnes Cemetery looks beautiful thanks to these wonderful volunteers! We live in such an awesome, caring community! Many thanks! I just wanted to say thank you to the person who turned in my social security card at Lowe’s in Hornell. I accidentally left the zipper on my wallet open, and it had fallen out in the parking lot, much to my dismay. It’s so nice to know that there are still good people in this world. Thanks again! Thank you, patriot! During a March wind storm, the American flag in front of a building on Main Street was ripped. The flag continued to rip during following windy days. I am grateful to the person who replaced the flag with an even bigger flag. Several times a day, I look at the flag and thank God that I live in America. Kindness I was shopping in a local plaza, came out of the store and couldn’t find my car, and started to look. A lady got out of her car and started to help, then another and another, until four ladies were looking for my car. I told them no worries, I will find it, but they insisted and kept looking until they found it! (As you know, all cars look alike now. ) I thanked them so much and realized that is why we live in a small town where people are kind and would take the trouble to do that for a complete stranger. I hope they read this and know it’s for them. Thank you again!

Frustrated I have 2 rants relating to customer service: 1. I called [local newspaper] to stop delivery while I was on vacation. I answered the recorded questions and received a confirmation email. The paper was delivered during my absence anyway. When I called to ask what happened, all I received was an apology. 2. I called to hold my mail. I followed the recording and was hung up on and tried again and could not get through. I had to wait an hour for a call back to schedule the mail hold. My mail was not delivered on the day I requested. I called the 800 number and had to wait an hour and a half before someone called me back to tell me they would contact the [local town] office. I called the [local town] office, but no one answered the phone. At 7:30am the next morning, someone from the [local town] office called to tell me my mail would be delivered that day. I asked what happened and was told a sub did not pick up the hold mail. I had a great vacation but a frustrating return home. Choices Who likes to be told what to do? Not many in my opinion, so don’t tell others what to do if you don’t like being told what to do. However, most of the people I know who hate being told what to do are the first ones to tell others what to do. So what is the solution? Live and let live. God will take care of the rest. Love your pets? Can’t believe people walking their dogs on hot, hot pavement in the middle of the day with temperatures soaring over 90. Why not find a shady area, or go early in the AM? Poor animals! And, to the convertible driver, top down, temp 92, dog in the back seat with no cover available: consider the heat or sun stroke in animals! Water is needed! Too bad for the dog that he has that owner. Think a bit sensibly and responsibly. Also, there is a gorgeous dog near me in a electric fenced area with no one paying attention to him, and every time a person walks by, the dog looks up near his toy ball, hoping for someone to throw it, or at least pay attention. Why own a pet?

IDEAS FOR FAST AND EASY ENTERTAINING Make fast snacks. Grilled cheese is not only a delicious comfort food that can be transformed into gourmet fare depending on the cheese used, but it’s also a relatively easy appetizer to make. Bake grilled cheese between two baking sheets in the oven. The bread will turn out crispy, the cheese perfectly melted, and you can make several at the same time. Cut into bitesized pieces and serve.

RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery. For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm.

Estate of Betsy Balzano Online Auction

Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky.

Rochester, NY New Date! Bidding closes Monday, June 21 at 3pm Selling: 2015 Buick LaCrosse, 62k miles, Dali print and other artwork, fine jewelry, costume jewelry, coins, furniture and more! See our website for more information and terms!

“Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added.

June Online Only Consignment Auction

Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said.

Bidding closes Tuesday, June 22 at 5pm Selling: Large number of lots including John Deere B, Harley Davidson, Hay and Farm Equipment, Garden Equipment, Party Equipment, Walk-in Cooler, Corvette Go Cart, and much, much more! See our website for terms and more information.

“Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.” Where To Turn To help, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support, and implementation of Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines.

DiMatteo Antique & Household Auction Bidding closes Monday, June 28th at Noon

Patients and caregivers can access more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions at www.StrokeAssociation.org/recovery.

Having sold his farm and moving to a condo, Mr. DiMatteo will sell: Large collection of antiques and artwork including 1854 Genesee Co. Map, prints, furniture, signs, and more plus canoe, railroad items, glassware, lamps, drums, guitars, and much more! See our website for terms and more information!

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A green cat was born in Denmark in 1995. Some people believe that high levels of copper in the water pipes nearby may have given his fur a verdigris effect. * Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of the iconic jungle man Tarzan, worked as a pencil-sharpener salesman before trying his hand at fiction. He only started writing at the age of 36 to support his wife and two kids. * Boanthropy is a psychological disorder in which patients believe they are a cow. * The infamous crocodile jump by James Bond in "Live and Let Die" was performed with real crocs by the only person willing to attempt it -- the owner of the crocodile farm. * In early 2015, Mattel released Hello Barbie, an interactive talking doll that didn't just repeat preprogrammed phrases, but could actually hold a two-way conversation. The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to third-party vendors. Goodbye, Barbie! Is a 3-Legged Dog Worth Adopting?

SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2021

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an opportunity to adopt a wonderful three-legged, overweight, 4-year-old Shepherd. I’m happy to help him lose the weight, as I already walk 2 to 4 miles almost every day. However, I’m not sure if he can walk those distances. Can he be trained to walk with me that far? Do you think he would be able to swim for exercise? -- Donna P., via email

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR DONNA: I’ve met so many animals that, despite a challenge such as a missing limb or paralysis, are still energetic and participate in every facet of life that they can. Your potential new family member may be able to train up to walking a couple of miles, eventually. He’s young enough, and Shepherds are certainly energetic enough. His extra weight will make it difficult to manage on three legs. You can best control his weight through a diet prescribed by a veterinarian, rather than relying on exercise alone. Don’t just cut calories without guidance, as he will need to eat good-quality food to put on muscle and get strong enough to walk with you. Swimming, if he is comfortable doing it, can be a great option to keep him exercising while putting much less stress on his joints. Introduce him to this activity gradually, and don’t force him into the water. Some dogs leap right in (I’m lookin’ at you, Labradors), while others are hesitant. If you’re still on the fence about adopting this wonderful boy, talk to a veterinarian to find out what challenges you will face in getting him to a healthy weight. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Dust Mite Allergy Triggers Cough

Complete Pair of Glasses Most insurances accepted including VSP, Davis Vision, EyeMed, MVP, Excellus, Univera, United Health Care and many more! GLASSES • CONTACTS • EXAMS

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: For months, I have had a persistent cough that I have been unable to get help with. I saw an allergist about three years ago and was told I am allergic to dust mites. I was first referred to a lung doctor where X-rays showed that my cheek sinus drains were completely blocked, and then to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who also confirmed this diagnosis. This ENT doctor recommended I have surgery to unblock the drains and clear out the sinus area. I understand that sinus drainage can cause coughing and wonder if this would still make me cough. I sometimes cough until I can cough up something, and this seems to stop my cough for a while. I was using a nasal rinse for a while until about two weeks ago when it caused my nose to bleed. The ENT doctor prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids that did not make any difference. It doesn’t seem to make any difference whether I’m home or sitting in the doctor’s office, I’m still coughing. What is the best way to deal with dust mite allergy? -- J.S. ANSWER: There are many causes of chronic cough, but postnasal drip is at the top of the list. Dust mites are indeed a common allergen, and symptoms may include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and cough from postnasal drip. Specific treatment for dust mites should include physical barriers, such as covers for pillows and mattresses, and sometimes for other soft surfaces, like furniture cushions, but this is only part of an effective strategy. Removing as many fabrics as possible (draperies, carpets, stuffed children’s toys) where dust mites can live is essential. Regular cleaning is necessary, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for vacuuming have been shown to reduce dust mites. A low-humidity environment can be very effective in discouraging dust mites, and cooler air -- especially at night -- can reduce irritation of nasal passages caused by dry air. Many interventions for a prolonged period are necessary to reduce dust mite infestation and the symptoms associated with them. This is critical, because the issue of the sinuses is probably secondary to ongoing allergic exposure. Fixing your sinuses will not fix your ongoing symptoms. Without control of the allergens, you will continue to have symptoms and may even develop sinus blockages again, no matter how good a job the surgeon does on your sinuses. ***

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

IMPROVING A GUMMY SMILE Sometimes genetics can leave individuals with smiles they feel don’t exactly suit them. For some that may mean a grin that shows more pink gums than pearly whites, a condition known as “gingival display.” When this is the case, a crown lengthening procedure may be the solution to the problem. The process reshapes the gums at the base of the teeth, removing small amounts of excess gum tissue to expose more tooth area. If there is not enough area available, crowns or veneers can be placed. Although full recovery takes approximately three months, normal activities can resume within a day or so, and soft food limitations are only required until any sutures dissolve.

Want to improve your smile? There are many techniques your dentist has to alter and otherwise enhance your appearance and give you good reason to smile. Let BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL help you choose the best method for your particular circumstances. If it’s time to stop hiding your smile, we invite you to experience the kind of up-to-date, knowledgeable dental care we provide here at 6 Batavia City Centre. We have office hours by appointment–call 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.

P.S. Crown lengthening can help restore teeth damaged by severe decay.

HELPING HEROES (NAPSI)—The Department of Defense reports that 1.3 million Americans serve in the military. If you or someone you care about is ever among them and sent overseas, you may be glad to learn about an organization that’s been assisting members of the U.S. armed forces, veterans and their families since the early 1900s: the American Red Cross. It provides emergency communication services, resiliency programs and morale activities. “We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. Now, the organization is expanding support for U.S. military personnel in Eastern Europe with a new office in Romania. In addition to aiding military members and their families, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to disaster victims; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; and provides humanitarian aid. A not-for-profit organization, it depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public. Learn More: The free Hero Care App helps members of the military and veteran communities access emergency and other Red Cross services anywhere in the world. Go to your app store or text GETHEROCARE to 90999 to download the app. For further facts, visit www.redcross.org.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible. Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.
