Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Seal cracks and gaps around your home’s windows, doors, and vents. These can be a considerable source of energy loss, allowing conditioned air to escape and unconditioned air to infiltrate your home, placing stress on your furnace and air conditioner in the process. An easy DIY solution is to caulk around windows, doors, and vents, and install or replace worn weatherstripping. An average home loses up to 30 percent of its energy through air leaks, so sealing your home is a worthwhile exercise.

MOBILE PET GROOMING SERVICE
PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

Adopting a Shelter Dog
Brooklyn has lots of energy, begs for oatmeal cookies and loves to be petted.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies.
How lucky can we be!
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Andy Webster Brings the Walden Project to the Finger Lakes By Amanda Dudek
S
pending the academic year in the woods while earning seven high school credits was a dream that became a reality for several students last year. Inspired by the much-lauded Walden Project created by innovator Matt Schlein in Vermont, the Walden Project New York is only the second Walden Project in the country to date. This fulltime, year-away program is based on the work of Henry David Thoreau. The Walden Project offers high school and gap year students the opportunity to step away from society and think about the bigger questions of life. “The whole curriculum is based on Thoreau’s experience at Walden Pond,” explained Walden Project NY founder and former public school teacher, Andy Webster. “Experiential and very much about self-directed learning, it is driven by three guiding questions: What is my relationship to myself? What is my relationship to my culture? What is my relationship to the natural world?” These complex questions provide the framework for meaningful learning through discussion, reflection and authentic experiences. Walden Project’s (NY’s) curriculum is comprised of six 6-week units: A Sense of Place, Self-Reliance, Social Justice, Economics, Environmentalism and Communication. Students earn 7 high school credits: English Language Arts, Math (Systems Thinking), Social Studies, Environmental Science, Health, Physical Education, and Applied Arts.
Students really connected with what we are doing. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, students walk a 1/4 mile uphill through the woods to a ring of benches around a campfire at Cumming Nature Center, owned by the Rochester Museum & Science Center. “We make coffee and tea over the fire,” said Andy. “Then we read from one of our primary texts - Walden Pond, Civil Disobedience and A Plea for Captain John Brown - beginning philosophical, dynamic, whole-group discussions that weave through science, history, literary elements, current events and last from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.” Other subjects are explored as well. “We use the Kamana program, among other things, for science,” Andy said. “Every students has a “sit spot” to which they return every day, developing a stronger sense of the patterns in nature and connect to the natural world.” “Students also participate in workshops which are framed by our six curriculum units,” Andy explained. “We provide 20-minute mini lessons that then branch off into more specific student interests.” Students develop their interests through independent research and service learning on Thursdays and Fridays. “Thursday is an indoor day,” said Andy. “Every student completes an independent research project on a subject of interest to them each 6-week unit, encouraging intrinsic motivation and natural curiosity.” On Fridays, students do 2017 - 2018 Walden NY taught by not return to Cumming. Andy Webster & co-teacher/Service Instead, students are sent Learning Coordinator, Janean Shedd. out to their respective placements for their service learning. “From Monday to Wednesday, we look at the problems of the world,”

Andy Webster teaching Project Walden NY students at Cumming Nature Center
explained Andy. “Then, students work with organizations to see how they are currently addressing real world issues.” These service learning projects revolve around the six units, as well. “In our Social Justice unit, for example, we see that society is not fair, and students feel that kind of anger that things are unjust,” Andy shared. “Service learning helps corral that energy and point it towards solving problems in the real world.” In addition, the Walden Project NY uniquely encourages divergent thinking. “We get away from one-size-fits-all education,” said Andy. “There is real value to convergent thinking, which involves narrowing down options to find the most likely possibility. The problem is that it is often the only kind we teach, neglecting divergent thinking, which involves creatively thinking of many possibilities. We encourage everyone to follow their genius.” While Walden Project is not a therapeutic program, it can be a very supportive program for those in need. “Students who are in therapy, feeling like misfits, dealing with anxiety, struggling with depression and feeling bad about themselves in school and those who have become apathetic may really blossom in this type of environment,” said Andy. “We have seen these same kids humming with excitement, happily showing off what they have accomplished because they are proud of themselves and their learning.” The 2018-2019 school year was Walden Project NY’s inaugural year. “Our nine, ‘pioneer’ students really connected with what we are doing, especially the service learning,” said Andy. “They became excited to learn more so that they could be even more involved, actively using the concepts they are learning to affect issues they care about.” There were no issues with credits transferring to the students’ various schools, and Walden Project NY will be accredited when it launches for 2019-2020. “We are currently enrolling for our September session right now,” said Andy. “We start right after Labor Day and continue into midJune. We are planning for 15-16 students, which would be ideal.” Last year, students participated in everything from harvesting maple syrup and growing their own food to studying watershed dynamics, creating portfolios and recording TedTalks. With one Walden Project NY student receiving a full scholarship to college from Walden and another becoming so invested in his service learning project that he now intends to pursue disaster relief as a career, Webster confidently declared Walden Project NY’s first year a success. sad I missed the pancake breakfast. Thanks to all the men and women who make up our fire department!
I’d like to thank the Springwater Fire Department. Not only do they do great work responding to all the calls and keeping us safe, but they also throw some amazing community events. They did a paint night that was awesome, a meat raffle that was a lot of fun, and the amazing comedy night. I’m With the nice weather finally upon us, people are enjoying sitting outside more and would maybe like to open their doors and windows to let the fresh air in. However, that is not possible because your dog is barking for hours on end! Please, please, please take your constantly barking dog inside! People do work nights and try and sleep with windows open but can’t because your dog is Always barking! Not to mention how this must affect your poor dog! Maybe your poor dog has some issues that you are ignoring. Obedience training would help as might a separation anxiety vest or medicine! Be a more responsible dog owner. husband, James Delaney, for always being warm and welcoming with a happy smile on their faces. They always welcome our children to come over and play with their kids. New to Springwater! New to the town and discovered we are surrounded by amazing people on all sides, including Yvonne Struble, Mary Markle and Nikki Zinter! All are wonderful, kind people who make us love this town more and more every day.
Dansville has many nice and wonderful people in it, and if you explore the right parts of town, it’s absolutely beautiful.
I LOVE the school system. Coming from a larger city where your child is a number to a community that cares and supports our children is amazing! I will never move out
Thank you, Jessica Delaney and her windows or doors! Your turn now to do what responsible dog owners do. At least help your dog so it isn’t barking all the time! Please! Some say those that are targeted with bullying must have mental health issues. Not necessarily. Many of the minors who do such illegal things as bringing guns to school have stated that they were targeted by bullies. Just because someone is angry doesn’t necessarily mean they have a mental health issue. Often, they are angry because they are suffering injustice. Everyone has a breaking point.
from the end of my driveway doesn’t help when I’m trying to pull out! Clearly, you can see that. You already have TWO driveways to park your many vehicles in; let’s not be selfish. Store your boat, camper and whatever other recreational vehicles you have elsewhere. You know you don’t have room for it all, so you make your neighbors’ lives harder. You act like the street belongs to you. So inconsiderate.
It’s harassment. Plain and simple. When I drove an old silver car, 35 silver cars surrounded me and boxed me in. I love small country towns; they always have the best people. I live in Sparta and have some of the best neighbors! They always take care of my driveway in the winter so it is easy on me. The other day, you passed us on a solid yellow line. You are a danger to people on the road, and I’m calling the county sheriff. I hope he will be waiting for you some morning to give you a wakeup call. It is not okay to go speeding down the road. It makes me angry that you think you are above the law, and I hope he will catch you. Enough is enough.

Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Get your facts together and become familiar with them before you have to face up to that interview. The better prepared you are, the easier it will be to make that important impression. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) New information might warrant changing your mind about a recently made decision. Never mind the temporary confusion it might cause. Acting on the truth is always preferable. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a loving atmosphere for those you care for could pay off in many ways. Expect to hear some unexpected but very welcome news that can make a big difference in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Stepping away from an old and seemingly insoluble problem might be helpful. Use the time to take a new look at the situation and perhaps work out a new method of dealing with it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re still in a favorable goal-setting mode. However, you might need to be a little more realistic about some of your aims. Best to reach for what is currently doable. The rest will follow. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A setback is never easy to deal with. But it could be a boon in disguise. Recheck your proposal and strengthen the weak spots. Seek advice from someone who has “been there and done that.” LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Coming up with a new way of handling a tedious jobregulated chore could lead to more than just a congratulatory memo once the word reaches the “right people.” Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) What you might call determination, someone else might regard as stubbornness. Look for ways to reach a compromise that won’t require a major shift of views on your part. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’re still in a vulnerable mode vis-a-vis “offers” that sound too good to be true. So continue to be skeptical about anything that can’t be backed up with provable facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Thrift is still dominant this week. What you don’t spend on what you don’t need will be available for you to draw on should a possible (albeit temporary) money crunch hit. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Staying close to home early in the week allows for some introspection about your social life. Sort out your feelings before rejoining your fun-time fellows on the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It can be a bit daunting as well as exciting to find yourself finally taking action on a longdelayed move for a change. It helps to stay with it when others rally to support you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of home and family provide you with the emotional support you need to find success in the outside world.
Saying “no” nicely Have you been active as a volunteer over the years? The person others come to for help with those special projects or problems of theirs? Are you the caregiver of an elderly person and finding your time is most likely limited these days? As a caregiver, you need to take care of yourself as well. That means you may not be able to do everything you used to do, but it can be difficult to say “no”. Setting limits and finding time for yourself is now more important than ever.
These examples offer a positive opportunity to say “no” nicely, without a lot of explanation or excuses. Give it a try and remember…you deserve to have some time for yourself or to reduce the stressful pulls others can unintentionally create in our lives. So give yourself permission to say “no”- Gracefully!
In its simplest form, the word “no” is just that…a word. When a person calls upon you to volunteer or help their cause, some easy and direct ways to say “no” include: “Thank you for asking me again this year. I’ve Sponsored by The Manor always enjoyed helping out XYZ Club. I will have to House Senior Living, pass this year, though.” or “Thank you for including 427 E Main St. me! I appreciate that you value my volunteerism, but Batavia; 585.344.2345. I won’t be able to fit it into my schedule right now.” Or “I am so sorry! A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
* On June 28, 1972, President Richard Nixon announces that no more draftees will be sent to Vietnam unless they volunteer for such duty. He also announced that a force of 10,000 troops would be withdrawn by Sept. 1, which would leave a total of 39,000 in Vietnam.
Is It Seasonal Allergies Or Dry Eye? (NAPS)—Two of the more common eye-related problems are dry eyes and eye allergies. While the symptoms are similar, there are differences between the two conditions. Sometimes they can occur at the same time, compounding the problem. That’s why it’s important to have a medical eye exam to determine the cause of your symptoms so you can get the appropriate treatment. If you’re concerned about the cost of the exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. Understanding Allergies Seasonal eye allergy symptoms are like dry eye, but itchiness is more common. When you’re sensitive to an allergen such as molds, pollen, dust or grass, histamine is released, causing itchy, red eyes that tear or burn. Over-the-counter medications are often effective. You can also take the following steps for relief: • Limit exposure to the outdoors on high–pollen count days. • Wash your face and hands after being outside to reduce the amount of pollen on the skin. • Don’t rub your eyes; it may increase the irritants and make symptoms worse.
* On June 27, 1988, heavyweight champion Mike Tyson knocks out challenger Michael Spinks with a left hook in the first round. The match lasted just 91 seconds. * On June 24, 1997, Air Force officials release a 231-page report dismissing long-standing claims of an alien spacecraft crash 50 years earlier in Roswell, New Mexico. The UFO rumors began in 1947 when a rancher found shiny material scattered on his land. The Air Force said it was a downed weather balloon.
Examining Dry Eye Dry eye is a complex disease that has many causes that often overlap and interact. Dry eye can happen when the eye doesn’t produce enough tears or when the quality of the tears can’t keep the surface of the eye adequately lubricated. It frequently occurs with other health conditions. People tend to make fewer tears as they get older due to hormonal changes. Both men and women can get dry eye. However, it is more common in women—especially after menopause. Common symptoms of dry eye disease may include sensitivity to light, dryness and itchiness, the feeling that something is in the eye, fluctuating vision, eye fatigue and excess eye watering. Ophthalmologists—physicians specializing in medical and surgical eye care—will prescribe a variety of treatments based on the cause of the dry eye. For many people, though, a few simple lifestyle changes can resolve the problem: • Try adding moisture to the air with a humidifier. • Protect your eyes from drying wind by wearing wraparound glasses outside. • Add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet for dry eye relief. These are in oily fish (such as salmon, sardines, tuna, trout and anchovies) and in flaxseeds. • Use artificial tear ointment or thick eyedrops just before you go to bed. If your eyes remain red and irritated after trying these tips, see your ophthalmologist. About EyeCare America EyeCare America is a national public service program that provides eye care through volunteer ophthalmologists for seniors 65 and older, and those at increased risk for eye disease. Spring Tire M aintenance
Attention: Ford/Lincoln/ Mercury Owners
Salt, grim e and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical w inter. Drivers w ill not get far this spring and sum m er w ithout tires in good repair, w hich is w hy tire m aintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist. Now is the tim e to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. M any tires indicate the recom m ended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidew alls. Cold tem peratures m ay cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on im properly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires w hen they are cold for the m ost accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also w ill im prove fuel econom y. Exam ine the tires for tread w ear. Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. M echanics m ay recom m end rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 m iles, or about every six m onths for the average driver. Wheel realignm ent m ay be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Drivers m ay discover extrem e tread w ear, bulges or even cracks in the sidew all during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s tim e to replace the tires.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.
HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I get all of my medicine by mail. Since the manufacturers stress keeping the pills at cool room temperatures, I wonder what the excessive heat does to them. The medicine must cook all day in the mailbox -- way over 100 degrees here in Florida. I wonder how much the pills or liquids are deteriorating, and how the effectiveness is influenced. -- F.N. ANSWER: You are right to be concerned. All medicines should be stored in a cool and dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Hormones, such as oral contraceptive pills, thyroid hormone and insulin, are among the most sensitive. Nitroglycerine is as well. Although some are shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, that’s not always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. If that’s the case for you, try to make sure the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (ask your pharmacist about others), ask your mail-order pharmacy to send it in special packaging during warm-weather months. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old male. I had triple bypass surgery two years ago. Post-surgery complications included diabetes, pneumonia and renal failure. I spent approximately three months in intensive care. After discharge I started physical therapy, as my arms and hands had atrophied. I am still doing therapy, but continue to have limited use of my arms and hands (I cannot curl my hands without force). Any insight you have as to why I am unable to use my hands would be appreciated. -- C.M. ANSWER: Muscle weakness is common after an ICU stay (it’s seen in more than 25 percent of patients), due to several separate causes. Prolonged immobility can lead to weakness, atrophy and even contractures (involuntary bending at certain joints, such as the elbow and ankle). Both critical illness myopathy (affecting muscles; it’s common in people who received steroids, like prednisone) and critical illness polyneuropathy (affecting nerves; it’s common in people with severe infection, like sepsis) can lead to weakness and atrophy. Medications are sometimes needed to paralyze muscles in surgery or in critical illnesses, and these can have long-lasting side effects, including weakness. Malnutrition is common in ICU patients, not because ICU doctors and nurses don’t know to or don’t want to feed patients, but because the body may be unable to absorb necessary nutrients. Some or all of these may combine to leave lasting physical effects from a long ICU stay. Physical and occupational rehabilitation services are the key to the recovery of function. Return of physical strength is slow and may be incomplete, so it may be necessary to use aids and to learn new ways to perform tasks. It has been my repeated experience that almost everyone can benefit from therapy, and patients who work harder, are more driven and are more optimistic tend to have the best results. Although most benefit is seen in the first year after loss of function, you still may continue to improve with therapy, perhaps utilizing different modalities. Definitely seek an occupational therapist if you haven’t already. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. www.SalmonOrthodontics.com KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

HEALTHY GUMS THROUGH TO ADULTHOOD Children and teens should bear in mind that, along with tooth decay, gum disease poses the biggest threat to dental health. Statistics reveal that about half of adults aged 30 years and older have mild, moderate, or severe gum inflammation. By age 70, the percentage of adults with gum disease rises about 70 percent. To avoid becoming a statistic, children and teens are advised to make a regular habit of brushing and flossing twice daily and getting regular dental checkups. Beyond these recommendations, young adults should avoid smoking, which compromises healing and increases the risk of developing gum disease. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop timesaving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
