Q&A Master Gardeners with

the

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

What are the best kind of mulch to use?

When it comes to choosing the best kind of mulch for your garden, there are several factors to consider. Mulch plays a crucial role in conserving moisture, suppressing weeds, and improving soil health. Here are some popular types of mulch and their benefits:

1. Organic Mulch: Organic mulches, such as wood chips, straw, leaves, and bark, are widely used for their numerous benefits. They break down over time, adding organic matter to the soil and improving its fertility. Organic mulches also help regulate soil temperature, prevent erosion, and promote beneficial microbial activity. Wood chips are particularly effective in suppressing weeds, retaining moisture, and creating a natural aesthetic.

2. Compost: Compost can be used as a mulch or incorporated into the soil. It enriches the soil with nutrients, improves its structure, and enhances moisture retention. Compost mulch also acts as a natural weed suppressant and provides a slow-release source of nutrients to plants. It is advisable to apply compost mulch in a layer of about 1-2 inches to avoid smothering plant roots.

3. Straw: Straw mulch is an affordable option that is commonly used in vegetable gardens. It helps retain moisture in the soil, reduces weed growth, and protects plants from soil-borne diseases. Straw also breaks down slowly, contributing to soil fertility over time. However, it is essential to source straw from pesticide-free sources to avoid introducing harmful chemicals to your garden.

4. Gravel or Stone: Gravel or stone mulch is a low-maintenance option that works well in arid climates or areas prone to erosion. It allows water to penetrate the soil while preventing weed growth. Gravel mulch also reflects sunlight, keeping the soil cooler during hot summer months. However, it may not be suitable for all types of plants, particularly those that prefer more organic and moisture-retentive conditions.

5. Rubber Mulch: Rubber mulch is a recycled product made from shredded rubber tires. It is long-lasting, doesn’t break down, and provides excellent weed suppression. Rubber mulch also helps retain moisture and insulate the soil. However, it is important to note that rubber mulch may not be suitable for edible gardens due to potential leaching of chemicals.

Ultimately, the best kind of mulch for your garden depends on your specific needs, preferences, and the plants you are growing. It’s recommended to choose mulches that are readily available, sustainable, and compatible with your gardening practices. Experimenting with different types of mulch can help you determine what works best for your garden’s health and aesthetics. Personally, when in doubt go with a double ground hardwood mulch that is not dyed with a color. This will always be a great sustainable choice.

YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY

Solar panels are seen more and more on roofs of residential homes and even some businesses. Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years.

The Solar Energy Industries Association® reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent.

While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it’s actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS

Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well.

First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter.

Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

TOOTH CONTOURING OPTIONS FOR JAGGED TEETH

Tooth contouring—often called tooth filing, reshaping, or odontoplasty—are all names for the same procedure: reshaping teeth. A dentist may recommend reshaping a tooth if it’s affecting your bite, causing crowding, in order to install a crown or veneer, or for a chipped tooth. Tooth reshaping is also used cosmetically to improve the look of a tooth or smile. Tooth contouring procedures are often quick, painless, and noninvasive. Odontoplasty does not hurt and in many cases does not require any numbing or anesthesia. If you have gum irritation and inflammation, trouble chewing, or a front tooth chip you want to fix for a better smile, ask your dentist about your options for reshaping the tooth or teeth in question.

If you’ve looked at yourself in the mirror and wished you liked your smile more, why not make a change for the better? Teeth can be contoured, bonded, veneered, crowned, and whitened and their appearance improved by several methods of cosmetic dentistry. It is truly amazing what can be accomplished in a short time that can enhance your appearance for the rest of your life. Call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246

We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre

P.S. Do not attempt to file down a tooth at home. It can remove the enamel protecting the tissue underneath and lead to a host of other dental problems.

Medicines Usually Maintain Efficacy Past Their Expiration Dates

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently tested positive for COVID using an expired home test, and I selfisolated for five days. I also realized every Tylenol, antihistamine, DayQuil, NyQuil and allergy pill that I had was past its expiration date. Some were only expired by a few months, but most were expired by two to four years. I guess I don’t get sick often. My question is: Before I dispose of these, how effective are they, and are any of them dangerous to use? -- K.L.

ANSWER: Drug manufacturers are required to make expiration dates, and they guarantee that the drugs are what they say they are and are effective until a certain date (at least if they are properly stored in a cool and dark area). This does not necessarily mean that they become ineffective or dangerous after expiring, and many drugs have been proven to maintain efficacy for years or decades after the printed expiration date.

A military study found that 90% of drugs are still effective 15 years after expiration. It is rare for a drug to become dangerous; however, the tetracycline class of antibiotics is one where toxicity has been found. In general, if a drug is a few months to a year past its expiration date, it is probably OK. (Liquid drugs, nitroglycerin and insulin are notable exceptions.)

But at some point, you have to ask yourself whether it is worth the small risk of the medicine being less effective, especially for inexpensive over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.

Also, COVID test kits may have an extended expiration date. The Food and Drug Administration maintains a list at tinyurl.com/COVIDTestKitExpire.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

• Place your unwashed strawberries on top in a single layer, then cover with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use, ideally within seven days. If you notice one of the strawberries going bad or turning moldy, immediately remove it and discard.

VENT

Wow, have we been taken advantage of For nearly an entire school year my family has transported one or two non-family member children to and from activities on the pretense that our adult group is friends (our children get along okay). Now after having asked on several separate occasions for help with transports for our child, we have been given one lame excuse after another to not reciprocate. Additionally, the 'friends' group recently, oops, forgot to extend a picnic invitation to their service staff - us! But we've actually been asked if we are 'helping out' next year!

Mr. Larry Boyd, of Bloomfield, gracious-

he saw me working on the flag pole in St. Bridget’s cemetery. His generosity is appreciated, and he’s the great neighbor he’s always been! Thank you!

We have never been offered compensation (which would have been greatly appreciated) in any form even though these pickups and dropoffs were not convenient, actually adding 15-20 minutes to our trips.

So next year, thoughtless people, best of luck finding consistent free help. Not gonna be these chumps.

Small towns have amazing heart

My husband and I were at the New Countryside Family Restaurant in Clifton Springs on Saturday 6/22 when we were pleasantly surprised. A couple of motorcyclers went out of their way to make a man, who was sitting alone, comfortable and happy by simply insisting on sitting with him to have conversation and a meal together. Small towns have amazing heart! I thank you gentleman for being so kind!

Noise ordinances

Yes, it's totally legal to mow your lawn outside of quiet hours, but there are other social contracts. My neighbor mows multiple times a week at 8am. I work night shifts, as do many others. Even if I didn't, it's so noisy and takes forever. If my neighbor needed a favor from me, well, you messed with my sleep. So many times. Why should I uphold my side of that social contract? Consider others around you always. If not because you're a decent person, but if only to have a peaceful symbiotic relationship with someone you should theoretically trust.

UNIQUE WAYS LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN WORK TOGETHER

Change suppliers. Many partnership opportunities can be effective even if they’re less public in nature. Global supply chains were in flux during the pandemic and have yet to return to normal. That makes now a great time for local businesses to reconsider their suppliers. When doing so, look into local suppliers and let it be known that your products are locally sourced. For example, local restaurant owners can highlight the fact that their foods are sourced from local farms and manufacturers. That may impress foodies with a fondness for freshness, and also should reassure customers who want to keep as many of their dollars in the local community as possible.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST

(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.

Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.

Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.

In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. To learn more, go to Fire Prevention at www.gobrick.com.

FREE GLOSSARY AND COMPENSATION GUIDE

(NAPSI)—If you or someone you care for is ever diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer after exposure to asbestos at work decades ago, here’s news for you. If you’re undergoing medical treatment, you can use a free “Asbestos Disease Glossary” available from the Asbestos Lifeline Institute of Great Neck, New York.

The handy, pocket-size booklet explains all the common medical terms used in asbestos injury care and identifies all the different medical specialists involved in treating mesothelioma, lung cancer and several other nonmalignant, asbestosrelated diseases.

The free booklet also contains helpful information about achieving monetary compensation for asbestos injuries, which hinges upon a timely filing of the claim and the ability to identify the specific asbestos products you used. In most instances, a “latency period” of several decades after exposure occurs before asbestos diseases develop, so most victims are in their 60s or older.

For victims with valid claims, choosing the right law firm for representation can be daunting, due to the many choices presented through TV commercials and Internet searches. The Asbestos Lifeline Institute can also be helpful in guiding you to the right firm.

To learn more, call the Asbestos Lifeline at (800) 990-1650, e-mail AsbestosLifeline@gmail.com or visit www.AsbestosDiseaseGlossary.com.

SUMMER

Sat. & Sun. 11am-3pm is weekend only (Citywide garage sale days, Fri. & Sat. & Sun. 11am-3pm)

Remember us when you are summer cleaning or having a garage sale.

• Please leave items on our covered porch at 2 Summit Street

• Gentle reminder, if you would not give an item(s) to your mother, please do not leave it with us.

• All large furniture and TVs are politely declined.

If you know someone clearing out an estate, we would be happy to help.

We accept all jewelry or metal items.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.

Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.

Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

GAS GRILL SAFETY TIPS

Inspect hoses at the start of each grilling season. Leaks, breaks or cracks in the hoses may occur when moving grills into the garage or shed for the winter. So it’s a good idea to inspect the hoses at the start of each season before using the grill for the first time each year.

The Kinetic Pen: Robin Flanigan’s Inspiring Literary Adventure

Growing up in Sedona, Arizona, Robin Flanigan might have been surrounded by the breathtaking vistas and spiritual vortices that attract tourists from around the globe, but her childhood was far from idyllic. “Sedona is a gorgeous place to be from,” she reminisces, “but I disliked growing up there because there was nothing to do but get in trouble, and I definitely got in a lot of trouble. Makes for good stories, though!”

is mix of restlessness and creativity eventually led Flanigan to a vibrantwritingcareer.Shewroteherfirststoryatage6or7,sherecalls, “It’s called ‘Santa Claus and the Magic Pencils’ and is somewhere in my attic.” is early start paved the way for a lifelong love of words. Her initial foray into journalism working as a beat reporter at three different newspapers led to freelancing in 2005. Since then, her work has spanned newspapers, magazines, and marketing collateral, establishing her as a versatile and sought-a er writer.

Creatively, Flanigan is drawn to narrative nonfiction and sometimes “[dabbles] in poetry.” Her work o en explores a variety of themes, such as “relationships and mental health to education and engineering,” all through a personal lens, trying “to work them out on the page” with her readers.

Flanigan says she writes “throughout the day—on my computer, in notebooks, on old receipts, in the margins of the closest magazine, using the Notes app on my iPhone. I always have a handful of pens in my purse.” is constant engagement with writing reflects her deep commitment to her cra .

Flanigan’s bibliography is as diverse as her interests. M is for Mindful is an ABC/poetry book endorsed by celebrities and used in educational and therapeutic settings nationwide. She is planning author visits and professional development sessions in schools for the 202425 academic year.

Her 100 ings To Do In Rochester Before You Die serves as a comprehensive guide to the Rochester region’s attractions, while Climbing Out: An Adventure in Rediscovering Life A er Loss is co-authored with a two-time cancer survivor who decided to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to cope with the sudden death of her husband. Flanigan narrates the poignant journey of grief, adventure, faith, and love, making it a favorite among book clubs. (Flanigan is also particularly proud of herself for reaching the 19,341 summit in 2008, though she declares she’s “one and done!”)

Flanigan is currently working on a research-based memoir on religious trauma, promising another deep dive into personal and profound territory. With each publication, the impact her books have on readers stands out as her greatest professional accomplishment.

Deeply connected to the writing community, Flanigan meets a few times each month with her friend Sue for extensive writing sessions and is an active member of several writing groups, including a supportive SaturdaycommunityatWriters & Books.

Flanigan notes a career highlight recently, when a first-grade teacher reached out to her about her book “M is for Mindful.” e teacher wanted to buy a copy for each student to help teach literacy and mindfulness. Moved by the request, Flanigan mobilized her network, ending up with donations from five cities across four states, and the teacher “didn’t have to pay a penny!”

She and illustrator Heather Jones visited the classroom as surprise guests, and a er the students read Flanigan and Jones “their favorite book,” the women shared their identities and the students were overjoyed with the visit and their personalized books. “We received hugs and even got a ‘Please don’t go’ from a girl who followed us into the hallway as we were leaving. I’ll always remember that.”

Flanigan’s advice to budding writers is both practical and philosophical: “Dra s exist for a reason,” she says. “Two of my books were published more than a decade a er starting them because they needed a different point of view, or a path I was going down ultimately led nowhere. e key is to never write off your writing. Forget time limits. Just work hard, network, and manifest, manifest, manifest.”

For those interested in learning more about Robin Flanigan, her journalism website, www.thekineticpen.com, offers a comprehensive look at her work. Her upcoming presentations and book signings for 100 ings To Do In Rochester Before You Die can be found on the book’s dedicated website.

Robin Flanigan’s literary life serves as an inspiring testament to the transformative power of storytelling. Whether through heartfelt books, engaging articles, or community involvement, Flanigan continues to touch lives and leave an indelible mark on the world of writing.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES

Serves 6 to 8

2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices

1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey

1/2 cup white wine

Zest of 1 lemon

Juice of 1 lemon

Fresh sage sprigs for garnish

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

HOW COMMUNITIES BENEFIT WHEN CONSUMERS SHOP LOCAL

Get a personal touch. Local business owners typically are inclined to go the extra mile for their customers and are personally invested in the services and products they are selling. As a result, shopping locally tends to be a personalized experience. Furthermore, a local business owner may be more amenable to ordering products for specific clientele. Such personalized service is typically not accessible when shopping big box stores or other shops where owners are off-site.

HOW COMMUNITIES BENEFIT WHEN CONSUMERS SHOP LOCAL

More money kept in the community. Shopping locally means that more money will stay in the community. According to recent research from Civic Economics, local eateries return nearly 79 percent of revenue to the community, compared to just over 30 percent for chain restaurants. Overall, for every $100 spent at a local business, around $73 remains in the community, verus roughly $43 when shopping at a non-locally owned business.

DISTRACTIONS THAT CAN AFFECT EFFICIENCY AT WORK

Meetings: Meetings may be well-intentioned, but they often compromise productivity and distract professionals from their jobs. A recent study titled “Meetings in America” commissioned by Verizon Conferencing found that 90 percent of professionals admitted to daydreaming during meetings, while 39 percent admitted they had fallen asleep during meetings in the past. Managers can help employees get more done and limit distractions by scheduling fewer meetings or reconsidering just who needs to attend meetings more carefully.
