DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

Outdoorexercisecanbenefitboth the planet and the people doing the exercising. By exercising outdoors instead of at home or at indoor fitness centers, men and women can reduce their carbon footprints. Exercising in the great outdoors does not require the use of energy-consuming fitness machines. In addition, when exercising outdoors during daylight hours, nature provides all the light men and women will need for their workouts, further reducing the average person’s energy consumption. And it’s not just adults who can benefit from spending more time outdoors. AccordingtotheHarvardMedical School, children are likely to get more exercise if they spend time outdoors than they are if they spend time indoors. A study from researchers in England used GPS devices and accelerometers to track the activity of 1,000 children. The children were more than twice as active when they were outside than they were when they were in inside. When children spend ample time outdoors, that, too, can benefit the environment. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average youngster spends three hours per day watching television and gets as much as seven hours of screen time each day. When kids are outdoors, they are less likely tobestaringatenergy-consuming screensanddevicesthantheyare when they’re indoors.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME

Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxingsanctuary.

There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room.Insulatingproperlywillallow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort.

Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help controlfirebylimitingitsspread.

Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity andpropagationofnoise.

A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently

The Power of a Thoughtful Independent Grassroots Movement

Lawn Mowing Hours

I’m so thankful for the over 900 volunteers who worked tirelessly for months to plan and pull-off the collection of well over 135,000 signatures to secure a place for an Independent presidential candidate on New York State’s 2024 ballot. What a recordbreaking accomplishment! I’m equally grateful for the quiet support that candidate has from tens of thousands of New Yorkers who wish for a better life for ALL Americans. This is happening all over our country. Thank you for all the Love, Light, Peace, Cooperation and Civility so many carry in their hearts and words.

Honor and remembrance ceremony. Huge thank you to the Conlan-Mulvaney American Legion Post for their holding the flag presentation for Ssgt. Stephen J Wilson KIA in Iraq. Thanks Legion commander and members.

Before you see, smell, or taste the arrival of summer—you’ll hear it by the sound of lawn mowers. I’m so over the perpetual, neverending lawn mowing in my area—at all hours day and night and often up to three or four times a week! But it’s not just the frequency that gets to me, even though mowing your lawn that often is truly terrible for the environment. Rather, it’s the time of day people choose to mow their lawns, with no regard for quiet hours in the early morning or late evening. I’ve heard multiple neighbors’ lawn mowers running as early as 7am and as late as 9pm this week. What is up with that? Friends, please be considerate of the noise and choose to mow your lawns during reasonable hours. And maybe think twice about how often you need to mow them—one or twice a week is really quite enough.

Please Be Respectful!

Caledonia Trout Fest Fun

What a wonderful time for all ages at the Caledonia Trout Festival on June 1st! Many, many thanks to all of the members of the Trout Festival Planning Committee and Big Springs Museum for the time and effort it takes to plan a community-wide event that brings together an entire community while opening it up and welcoming visitors from all over. Well done!

To people who walk their dogs in our local cemeteries, please STOP! It is disgusting and disrespectful to allow your dog to urinate and defecate on or near a grave. Our loved ones and all those interred deserve respect and honor. A cemetery is a place where families and friends should be able to reflect on and pay tribute to the lives of those buried there, free from dog excrement. Also, to all those who visit our cemeteries, please do not discard drink containers, cigarette butts and food wrappers on the grounds. Those interred deserve our utmost honor and respect.

WAYS TO REVAMP LIVING AREAS

Update the flooring. Tired, outdated carpeting or other flooring can use an overhaul. While solid hardwood flooring may be preferable, there are many types of laminate flooring that mimic the looks of popular wood colors and styles for a fraction of the cost. Plus, many are sold at home improvement retailers and even at warehouse clubs or online for reasonable prices. Laminate flooring also may be a potential DIY job for a skilled homeowner, saving even more money.

ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING

Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt.

WBullying Prevention Depends on Parents and Coaches

and respond to inappropriate behavior early before it escalates into something more.

e’ve all seen it. Name-calling, ridiculing, spreading rumors, or even hitting. But how do you tell the difference between bullying and behavior that’s just … mean? It can be a challenge, especially considering that most youth don’t tell an adult when they’ve been bullied. It’s up to parents to recognize and identify the behavior and respond accordingly.

At the U.S. Center for SafeSport, our goal is to make every athlete feel safe, supported, and strengthened. We believe that youth sports should be fun and confidence-boosting, but bullying can seriously impact an athlete’s physical and mental health. e sooner we recognize and respond to bullying behavior, the sooner caring and engaged parents and coaches can foster supportive environments to help athletes thrive on and off the field.

So, what is bullying? And how do we spot it – and stop it?

What does bullying look like?

Bullying might not be easy to pinpoint, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. In fact, according to one study by the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Justice, about 20% of students ages 12-18 experienced bullying nationwide. e key to stopping it is knowing what bullying looks like in action.

Maybe you’ve seen two athletes get into a heated argument a er a game or start throwing punches in the locker room. While bullying and conflict can look similar, bullying behavior is defined as repeated or severe aggressive behaviors directed at a minor. And it comes in many forms, from verbal bullying to physical bullying to social or even sexual bullying and more.

Taunting, spitting at one another, or actively excluding someone from a team event can be hurtful in the moment, but when bullying behaviors are repeated or severe, they can have serious long-lasting impacts on those being targeted.

We’ve heard of examples of athletes spreading emotionally damaging rumors about another athlete online, or instances in which an athlete was threatened with violence or physically intimidated until they quit the team. And it’s well known that athletes who bully o en zero in on those who have less social power than they do, focusing on factors like weight, disability, physical appearance, race, and/or gender identity.

Intervening early makes a difference

Whether you’re on the court coaching your child’s team or on the sidelines handing out orange slices, parents and coaches serve as the eyes and ears of the team. You are positioned to recognize

Actions you can take to prevent bullying

• Set behavioral expectations upfront. If you’re a parent or coach, let your child or the athletes on your team know what behaviors are acceptable and unacceptable. Allow the athletes to be part of this process, letting them co-create the norms for team behavior.

• Model appropriate and respectful behavior. Treat every athlete on the team with equity, respect, and kindness, and use language that is intentionally supportive.

• Promote team cohesion and bonding. Use encouragement and positive feedback to improve camaraderie, boosting unity and morale.

• Hold athletes accountable to expectations and policies. Make sure athletes know they’ll be held accountable for their actions. Be sure to always promote accountability, not punishment, and outwardly reward inclusive behavior.

• Respond to misconduct immediately and consistently. When misconduct occurs, address it immediately. Remember that if you address one incident but ignore another, you’re sending mixed messages about what behaviors are acceptable. You can break a pattern before it takes hold.

Sports should be safe, welcoming spaces where every athlete feels like they belong. As a parent or youth coach, you have the power to foster a culture of respect and inclusion.

e U.S. Center for SafeSport provides educational resources for parents and coaches to help make sure young athletes feel safe. Our Bullying Prevention Handbook for coaches of Minor Athletes provides useful tools and tactics to create the most enriching sport experience possible. HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING

LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

Homemade hummus with truly unique taste

Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread

Makes 2 cups

2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped

Salt

1 cup cooked garbanzo beans, drained

4 teaspoons chopped cilantro plus 1 teaspoon for garnish

2 tablespoons chopped red onion

21/2 teaspoons ground cumin

11/2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds

2 tablespoons lemon juice

4 teaspoons olive oil

2 teaspoons chile flakes

2 teaspoons Moroccan Spice Blend (see below)

Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below)

In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the carrots are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the carrots to drain and cool in a colander.

Combine carrots and remaining ingredients, except for Yogurt Flatbread, in the work bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining cilantro. Serve with fresh, hot Yogurt Flatbread cut in wedges.

Moroccan Spice Blend

Makes about 2 tablespoons

In a small resealable glass or plastic container, combine 1 teaspoon each of: ground cumin, ground turmeric, saffron threads, ground coriander, ground cinnamon, ground smoked paprika, finely grated lemon peel.

Yogurt Flatbread

Serves 4

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon coarse salt

21/2 cups plain yogurt

Olive oil

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the yogurt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Cover the work bowl and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

DID YOU KNOW?

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

HOW

Calcium phosphate is a naturally occurring mineral compound and an important component of bones and teeth. Calcium phosphate is a common ingredient in toothpaste because it helps remineralize and strengthen teeth. Calcium and phosphates already exist in our saliva. After we eat, phosphate and calcium ions begin to repair teeth through remineralization: the teeth’s natural repair process that deposits calcium and phosphate in enamel. Adding fluoride into the mix makes teeth even stronger than their own natural remineralization process does. When combined, fluoride, calcium, and phosphorus form a mineral called fluorapatite, which makes our tooth enamel harder. Fluoride can be used to help repair and reverse tooth decay, since calcium and phosphorus are already naturally present in our bodies.

PROTECTS YOUR TEETH

Would you like to know more about the importance of fluoride in dental health care? At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our approach to addressing our patients’ dental needs includes educating them on effectively avoiding future problems, thus promoting optimal oral hygiene. To this end, our mission is to provide open and free communication and the highest standard of personalized care in an environment of health, mutual understanding, and respect. We have office hours by appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246.

P.S. Calcium phosphate creates a very hard material, but it can be dissolved by acids, which are one of the main substances responsible for breaking down tooth enamel.

Narrowing Down the Main Cause Behind Insulin Resistance

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the main cause for insulin resistance?

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about five years ago. I’ve maintained a consistent weight under 200 pounds, and I’m only 5 feet, 9 inches tall. I was able to get my A1C level down to 7.2% last summer, but in late fall, my numbers started spiking, even with insulin. I now find myself injecting crazy amounts of insulin just to maintain normal glucose levels.

I’m on a diet of 40 grams of carbohydrates a day. I walk close to 20,000 steps a day. But on a regular day, I inject 30-40 units of mealtime insulin before eating a low-carb, high-protein meal. Still, my level spikes above 250 mg/dL, and it stays there for a few hours.

ANSWER: Insulin is a signal that there is plenty of sugar in the body, and the body uses insulin to take sugar out of the blood into cells. Normally, just a little insulin will make blood sugar levels go down a lot. When it takes a lot of insulin to lower blood sugar levels, we say that there is insulin resistance. A great deal of work has been done in trying to elicit why people develop resistance to insulin. There are some rare congenital cases involving mutations of the insulin receptor. There are rarely acquired immune-mediated causes that have antibodies to insulin or the insulin receptor. These antibodies have an extremely high resistance to insulin. However, most cases of insulin resistance are associated with obesity. Your BMI is 29.5, suggesting that you’re overweight but not obese. In this case, abdominal fat is more metabolically important, since it can lead to free fatty acids and compounds called adipocytokines, which may contribute to insulin resistance. People with abdominal obesity and insulin resistance often have abnormal cholesterol levels and high blood pressures, a combination called “metabolic syndrome.” Blood pressure and cholesterol must often be treated separately. Insulin works to lower blood sugar, but there are four main hormones that oppose insulin and raise blood sugar: cortisol, catecholamines, glucagon and growth hormone. Elevated levels of any of these hormones will cause insulin resistance. I know this isn’t your case, but the pregnancy hormone human placental lactogen causes insulin resistance and is the proximate cause for gestational diabetes.

Some medicines (steroids, birth control pills, and HIV medicines) can cause insulin resistance. Critically, glucose itself can cause insulin resistance! High blood sugar levels prevent insulin release as well. This is why getting and keeping a normal blood sugar level is so critically important, especially when a person is first diagnosed. Management of a person with high amounts of insulin resistance can be challenging. You are already doing amazingly well with exercise, and it sounds as though your diet is of the type that is commonly recommended. Medications that reduce insulin levels -- such as metformin, GLP-1 agonists and thiazolidinediones -- are often recommended to reduce the amount of insulin used. Your situation is not common, and you should absolutely be in the hands of an endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes.

Do you have HEEL pain or

ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Here’s A Tip

* “Use a bandanna to strain coffee if you’ve accidentally had a filter bust. It works. I first used this tip when camping, but I have used it at home, too. e coffee goes through it faster than a paper filter, which is fine when it’s already brewed, since you lose less heat.” -- T.R. in Arkansas

* Recycling notes: Cardboard that’s greasy or food-caked is just not recyclable. It’s trash. On the plus side, your glass jars don’t have to be perfectly clean, nor your cans crushed, in order to take them to the recycling center or drop curbside if your community has a plan in place.

PEACH BRUSCHETTA WITH BLUE CHEESE

Serves 4

4 slices country bread 2 peaches

Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing 1/4poundbluecheese,gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese

Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes.

While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact.

When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve.

My maple tree (approx. 50 ft. high, 2 ft. around) has roots coming out of the ground (approx. 50 ft. from the house). What can I do? I want to keep it.

Maple trees can sometimes have shallow root systems that are prone to being at or just above the surface. This can be influenced by various factors, including soil conditions and the tree’s environment. In cases where the tree is healthy and the

exposed roots are not causing any immediate issues, it may be sufficient to avoid damaging those roots and be mindful of activities around the tree that couldharmthem.

One approach to protect the exposed roots is to use a stone mulch. Stone mulch can create a barrier that helps retain moisture and shields the roots from physical damage. It allows

for proper airflow and water exchange, ensuring the tree’s health. When using stone mulch, it is important to choose the appropriate size and type of stones to avoid impeding water penetrationorlimitingairflow.

PAW’S CORNER

Quelling a cat’s separation anxiety

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Here’s a weird one. I went away on a business trip for three weeks, leaving my 9-year-old cat “Jenks” with a friend. Since I’ve returned, Jenks will not leave my side. He clambers onto my lap while I have Zoom meetings; he follows me to and fro around the house; and he insists on sleeping on the bed at night. He also meows loudly if he can’t see me. is is a new behavior for him. What’s going on? -- Claudio G. in Brooklyn

DEAR CLAUDIO: Jenks may have separation anxiety. Even though he never exhibited these behaviors before while you were away, it’s possible for a cat to develop this issue with no clear triggers.

Monitor his behavior patterns closely for a few days. In addition to meowing loudly when you’re out of sight, is he grooming his coat more than usual? Is he doing anything destructive like clawing up a new piece of furniture? Have his eating habits changed -- eating too little or gulping his food? ese can also be signs of anxiety.

Try the following and note if his behaviors lessen or normalize:

-- Don’t make a big production out of leaving the house or coming home. Extra affection may make him more anxious.

-- Leave the TV, radio or speaker on while you’re away, playing a program or music.

-- Set up a cat perch near the window so he can watch the world.

-- Create a den or nook where he can rest, safe and cozy.

If the behavior doesn’t improve, or it worsens, contact the veterinarian. ey will recommend an exam to rule out any illnesses. ey’ll offer advice on additional ways to help calm Jenks, and if necessary, will prescribe medication to reduce his anxiety.

DID YOU KNOW? A study from the Gap Year Association found that 77 percent of students who take a gap year do so between high school and college. Parents may not know how to react when their soon-to-be or newly minted high school graduates bring up the idea of taking a gap year, but additional findings from the GYA’s “National Alumni Survey” might inspire parents to look at gap years more positively. For example, the survey, the findings of which were based on the responses of hundreds of American and Canadian citizens who had taken gap years in the past, found that 98 percent of respondents indicated their gap years helped them develop as a person, while 96 percent felt their gap years improved their self-confidence. In addition, 84 percent of respondents felt that they acquired skills to be successful in their careers during their gap years. Perhaps of most interest to parents of high school students contemplating gap years is that 73 percent of survey respondents felt their gap years increased their readiness for college and 57 percent said their gap years helped them determine what they wanted to study in college. WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY

(NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills.

“Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says.

With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken.

For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN

(NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used.

A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach.

Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel.

o

o

o

Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well.

On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain.

In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty.

Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain.Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses.

Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. You can find more helpful healthcare and pain relief information from Dr. Arnot at https://us.hisamitsu/.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE

Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achievedbygoingtoinformational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK

Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.
