Penny Saver Readers are the Best!

I want to thank all of the Penny Saver readers who responded to my requests for household items for refugee families. Your generosity is inspiring!

Compassionate Caring Neighborhood Pharmacy

I have been fortunate to be near Meade Square Pharmacy in Victor for eight years. Today I had a dire situation with a medication I was prescribed which I could not use or return. The situation was handled with true compassion and reassurance by the owner.

Thank You

Gotta thank the nice man who gave me the plant at Tops Market in Hamlin. Still growing and looks beautiful. Sorry I didn’t get your name, but thanks again.

Watch Your Children

Parents, please watch your children! From kids walking home alone from school to playing in the park or just shopping. Today I had to call the police because a 10 year old girl was getting bullied by 5 to 6 other kids. Now I sat there awhile minding my own business but when the little girl was pushed and was told to go to the bathroom I already knew. The little girl literally screaming “I don’t wanna fight” and “no.” Now what’s crazy is those kids that were bullying that girl had an adult in the car across the street. What wrong, parents? No matter if your kid is “old enough” to go to the park by themselves you should be present in your child’s life. We live close to the water where people get trafficked the most. I’ve seen it all being a nurse: Kids come in unconscious, assaulted, overdosing, broken body parts from fights and being bullied all cause the parents and the adults are not around and are not paying attention to their kids behavior and actions.

Bad Drivers

Why are so many people driving around believing roads are only for them? Running red lights, not stopping at stop signs, tailgating, speeding etc. For those who believe they’re more important, you’re NOT! To the young ignorant kid today that cut me off, when I had the right away, at the red light you didn’t have the backbone to look over. You’re someday going to experience road rage for your self centered attitude.

much. It’s always there for you, getting you where you need to go.

A little extra care this Valentine’s Day-or any day-in the form of an oil change, tune-up and basic service can be a great gift for the one who keeps you going.

“Don’t let your car break your heartbyneglectingtotakecareof it,” advised Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Being car care aware canaddyearsofusefullifetoyour relationship with your vehicle and keep you from being stranded because of an unexpected breakdown.”

The Council recommends a little tender loving auto care.

• Schedule a tune-up annually to optimize your car’s performance. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions.

• Change the oil and filter per the owner’s manual. Periodic oil and filter changes keep your engine clean on the inside.

• Check the tire pressure monthly, including the spare. Your car’s tires affect its ride, handling, traction and safety.

• Have the alignment checked annually. Potholes and other road conditions, as well as normal wear, can take their toll on your car’s steering and suspension. A wheel alignment reduces tire wear, improves fueleconomyandhandling, and increases driving enjoyment and safety.

• Inspect the windshield wipers andlightsonthecar.Lightsand wipers play a major role in safe driving, and they are normal wear items that need periodic replacement.

To help make vehicle ownership more enjoyable, economical and convenient so you can keep your relationship with your car on track, the Car Care Council has a free custom service schedule available on its website.

The Council is also the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A

MOVE

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS

Zoom in and crop subjects. Smaller pictures can be just as compelling as larger ones. Zoom in on the bark on a tree, the skin of a lizard or the wings of an insect. Closer looks at what is hiding in plain sight in nature can lead to compelling pictures. Zoom in and think about a macro lens, which will magnify even the tiniest details.

RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills.

FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

When tending to their lawns, homeowners are advised to pay attentiontoareasthatmayfeature standing water. According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if gone it goes undiscovered.Standingwateralso can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnantwaterisaprobleminyour yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

Did you know?

While it might be tempting to lower mower blades when summer temperatures reach their hottest, it is possible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their mower blades too low, as doing so can cause significant damage to the lawn. Lawns that have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that exposure can lead to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suffer from weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and an eyesore. When mowing, homeowners should remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. Mowing at this height will promote strong roots and protect the grass when the weather gets especially hot in the summer.

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN BUYING FROM A PRIVATE SELLER

Confirm the number of owners. There’s no magic number of owners a vehicle can have before it’s considered too risky to buy, but the more owners a car has had, the less likely buyers will learn its full history. In addition, if sellers were not the first owners, they won’t know how the car was treated or driven prior to them buying it. That’s another potential red flag to consider before buying a car that has had more than one owner.

How to Avoid Calcium While Taking Thyroid Medication

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a thyroidectomy, and I take levothyroxine. Instructions for the medication state not to take it within four hours of consuming calcium. No discussion of the drug has clearly stated whether this only refers to calcium supplements or whether this also includes high-calcium foods.

I usually take levothyroxine when I wake up, between 2 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., to avoid breakfast dairy products (i.e. yogurt, cheese and soy milk) and dinner foods (broccoli, leafy greens, dairy and soy). I go to bed fairly early. I eat mainly plant-based, plus dairy.

I have asked some doctors and pharmacists, only to have them answer with the question: “Doesn’t that only apply to supplements?” I don’t know! That’s why I’m asking. I want my thyroid prescription to work as it’s supposed to. Can you shed light on this issue? -- E.G.

ANSWER: Large amounts of elemental calcium do decrease the absorption of the thyroid hormone, thyroxine. If you were to take thyroxine (Synthroid and others) at the same time as you would a large calcium pill, you could expect the thyroid medicine to be about 7% to 8% less absorbed. (Iron and caffeine also decrease thyroid hormone absorption.)

A glass of cow’s milk taken at the same time will decrease thyroid hormone absorption. Soy milk has not been studied, but I would expect calcium-fortified soy milk to be similar to milk, yogurt and some high-calcium cheeses in their ability to reduce thyroxine absorption. However, I think you may be taking things too far. One hour is probably adequate enough to separate calcium from thyroxine. Furthermore, if you are consistent in taking your medication, your dose will get adjusted to the correct level. I doubt that vegetables have any effect on absorption.

Finally, in a study of people who took thyroxine sometimes with and sometimes without their calcium, the change was not enough to get them out of the desirable range, although the levels were definitely affected. The dose of thyroid hormone has a little bit of leeway in most people, although some people (such as those with a history of thyroid cancer who are now on replacement therapy after surgery) need to have a very exact dosage. So, avoiding calcium, iron and caffeine in those cases is more critical.

WHY IS NITROUS OXIDE USED AT THE DENTIST?

We’ve all heard of dentists using “laughing gas” during a dental procedure. Otherwise known as nitrous oxide (N2O), mixing with oxygen creates a mild sedative effect that relaxes the patient. The gas is inhaled through a mask and takes affect within minutes. The N2O slows down the nervous system to make patients feel calm and comfortable during the procedure, but they should not fall asleep. Afterward, the N2O wears off quickly as the patient breaths pure oxygen through a mask. Nitrousoxideisnotrecommendedfor everypatient, butyoumayreceiveitif youhaveseveredentalfearoranxiety. N2O is also used when patients experience a gag reflex from dental instruments in the mouth.

Q&A Master Gardeners with

What are good ground cover ideas for beds in this area?

There are so many groundcovers available, it can be difficult to select the best one for your garden. I think the most important quality is that it has to be easy remove. Groundcovers spread easily and can easily choke out your desired plants. I do not recommend plants including vinca and English ivy for this reason.

Ihaveacoupleofgroundcovers

that I rely on. For sun, I enjoy the low-growing sedums. There are numerous varieties, all are easy to pull back when they start to crowd into other plants and aren’t usually bothered by deer. For shade, I enjoy cranesbill, also called perennial geranium. It has flowers in various shades of pink, lavender and white, so it combines easily with most other garden colors. Again, it is easily pulled out with my bare hands. In my yard it may

get nibbled by deer, but they don’tusuallypreferit. Sometimespeoplearelooking for a taller groundcover to fill an empty spot. I often rely on daylilies in this case. They need full sun to produce a lot of flowers and yield fewer flowers as shade increases.

There are taller varieties of cranesbill available for those shadyareas.

It’s Always a Pleasant Time to Visit Highland Park

Quinn says one of the central goals of the conservancy was to raise money for the Children’s Pavilion upgrades. Quinn explains that the Children’s Pavilion, which served as a public scenic overlook in the park’s original purpose, is now being rebuilt, a er being taken down in 1963:

Parks have gained renewed interest since the pandemic, and it’s not hard to see why. Originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Highland Park is a world-class arboretum and National Register-listed landscape. It is the oldest public arboretum in the United States.

e park began in the 1880s as the dream of two civic-minded Rochester nurserymen, George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry. ey had watched the city grow steadily closer to their Mount Hope Nurseries for 40 years. To bring country living to urban residents, Ellwanger and Barry created a public park on almost twenty acres of their nursery grounds and donated them to the city. Olmsted was hired by the Rochester Parks Commission in 1888 to design and plan the city’s rst public park: Highland Park.

Since the beginning, talented horticulturists have contributed to Ellwanger and Barry’s dream. eir goal was to expand and enrich the park’s botanical collections by acquiring rare and unusual plants from around the world. In the 20th century, Highland Park achieved international fame for its display of lilacs, many of which were cultivated right here in Rochester.

MarkQuinn,MonroeCounty’sSuperintendentofHorticulture, says, “Highland Park is central to the park system here. It’s one of the premier arboretums in the country. It absolutely is critical to bringing people into the area. We talk about the Lilac Festival, bringing in upwards of 500,000 people for a 10-day festival, and even throughout the rest of the year, the park is highly visited. Having good parks in the community is critical. Having Olmstead parks is a real stroke of luck.”

Using the Pinnacle Range, a glacial moraine, Olmsted emphasized the plant materials and park elements incorporated into Highland Park’s design. A focal point and viewing feature of the surrounding area was located east of the reservoir on the high ground. As the park’s crowning feature, a three-story Children’s Pavilion was built to enhance the scenic views.

Highland Park is run by Monroe County, which manages, operates, and maintains the park. It is the mission of the Highland Park Conservancy, a nonpro t organization that advocates for, and participates in, the preservation, restoration, and enhancement of Highland Park and Lamberton Conservatory. e Highland Park is known for its world-class arboretum, historic Olmsted design, and other amenities, by ensuring the public appreciates and actively engages with its unparalleled beauty.

“Within two years, the Children’s Pavilion, which was something that was fundraised for by the Highland Park Conservancy, and funded through the government as well, it’s a real project right now; it’s in the design phase right now,” he says. “ e hope is that it won’t work much [di erently]. Our goal is [to] design it to look as similar as possible. e di erence is this one will have an elevator, so it will be handicap accessible. is one will hopefully have some maintenance improvements to it.”

Quinn explains that, “Parks are much busier places postpandemic … and I think you nd that throughout any park system, visitation has gone up a lot. If you look at Highland Park, in its initial design, the [objective] was to get people out of con ned city areas into the open air, and clearly, that’s what happened during the pandemic.”

As part of their mission, the Highland Park Conservancy conducts tours and runs special events, organizes a corps of volunteer gardeners who assist in park maintenance and beauti cation, communicate through print, video, and social media on topics of current, educational, and historic importance about the park.

Highland Park remains a cultural center for Rochester and the nation, and each day, the sta maintains that legacy. “One of the things I tend to tell people is we are a 365-day operation; it’s always a good day to visit the park. Always. ere’s always something in bloom in Highland Park, and it’s always a good time to go,” Quinn says. “It’s outdoors, we have beautiful horticulture; it’s a peaceful and pleasant place to spend time.”

Here’s a tip

• You can remove berry stains from your ngers with lemon juice. Got berry juice on your tablecloth? Here’s E.B. of Mississippi’s suggestion: “Pour a generous amount of milk on the spot, let it soak for 15 minutes or more. en soak in cold water with soap for an hour or more. Wash, rinse and dry.”

• Soak raisins in cold water before chopping so that they won’t stick to your knife.

• “Use celery ribs lined up to create a base for your roast. is way, the juices move around more and the roast never sticks to the pan. I serve the celery with the roas.-- A.T. in Tennessee

• Need to chill some drinks for a party fast? Pile on the ice, of course, then add the secret weapon: water. Icy water chills drinks quicker than placing them in ice alone. e heat is transferred from the warm drinks to the water because there’s total contact.

PAW’S CORNER

Puppy Piddling is a Real Pain

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-month-old, medium-size mixed breed dog Jake has a problem I can’t seem to train him out of. Whenever he gets excited, he leaves pee droplets across the oor. Jake is healthy and energetic, and he housetrained quickly. What can I do to stop the piddling? -- Pupper Dad in Ohio

DEAR PUPPER DAD: ere’s a very good chance that it can be resolved. It will take time and training, though.

Puppies under a year old piddle when they get excited or when they think they’re in trouble. Part of it may be a smaller bladder, but another part of it is what’s called “submissive urination.” Dogs piddle instinctively to signal that you are their superior. However, this isn’t a wild dog pack outdoors; it’s you and your dog and your beautiful hardwood oor.

Punishing or yelling at Jake when he piddles will not solve the problem. e real issue is one of con dence and of nding where he belongs in the household. Most puppies stop piddling at around one year old, especially in a home where there’s a predictable structure, as they mature and settle into their place in the family.

Encourage this during Jake’s rst year by staying calm when he piddles. Yelling or trying to correct on the spot can make the problem worse. Clean up the urine and lead him to a di erent spot, and work on a basic command with him like “sit-stay.”

Try not to pay attention to Jake when you come in the door from work. Ask visitors to look away from him when they come in. Later, when you and your visitors are settled on the sofa, pay attention to Jake with lots of praise. POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL TRUCK

(NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips.

• Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns.Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

• Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant.

• Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.

• Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.

• Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.

Learn More: You can find further moving facts and tips at www.PenskeTruckRental.com and (800) GO-PENSKE.

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT

Giftgivingintheworkplacecanbe challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t wanttofaceasituationinwhicha gift leads to office gossip.

According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly.

Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grabanythingofftheshelf.Butthe gift should not be something that wouldoffendtastesorsentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised.

Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift.

Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment.

Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift.

Follow the rules. Gift exchanges shouldbeclearedwithsupervisors orhumanresourcesprofessionals. Itpaystocheckiftherearerulesin placeforgiftingothers.

Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonusesfromhigher-ups.Ifyou’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
