DID YOU KNOW? Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer to affect the endocrine system. While many cancers have decreased in prevalence, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc. indicates incidence rates for thyroid cancer have increased in recent years. The American Cancer Society expects thyroid cancer deaths to increase to 2,200 in 2021 out of an estimated 44,280 people affected by thyroid cancer. Unlike most other adult cancers, thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age. Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men. Thyroid cancer is largely treatable, most notably with the removal of a portion of the gland or the entire thyroid gland depending on cancer stage. People who have had their thyroids removed (thyroidectomy) will need to take daily thyroid hormone pills.

IDEAS FOR FAST AND EASY ENTERTAINING
Get creative with serving dishes. Muffin tins can be put to use in different ways as handy serving dishes. Use them to keep several filled beverages upright and manageable when serving guests. Or try a tin for condiments at a barbecue. Place pickles, relish, ketchup, mustard, and onions in each section for easy burger fixings.

The end of July is synonymous with poolsides, wave pools, and eighty-foot tall slides mounted on steel towers. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a lazy vacationer, waterparks have something for every taste. Nothing beats being in the water to cool off during the summer.
The waterslide was first seen in New Zealand during a display at their International Exhibition in 1906. Ever since, waterslides have quickly evolved, especially in the 1970s. More than 1,000 water parks already exist with multiple new parks opening each year in the U.S.

Good for Mamma G’s Restaurant
A shout-out to Mamma G’s Restaurant in Henrietta: I ordered food to go for three and they got one order wrong, including forgetting the dessert. When I phoned to see if it could be corrected, they not only obliged cheerfully, but also provided the replacement food completely for free, which included a main course. If only more businesses engaged in these practices! We all make mistakes, but these folks were bent on correcting their error, and doing it pleasantly and promptly. Thanks, Mamma G’s - great management!
Yard Sale Thief
On July 8th we were having a neighborly yard sale in [local town]. Around noon we had a torrential downpour. I had tarped two tables with items that could not get wet. Other items were on another table and the ground which could get wet. We went into the house to get out of the rain. My wife had looked out the window and said a woman who had a black SUV was putting a gas can in her car. Then she said I think she is putting it back on the ground. After the rain stopped we went out to find out that over $150.00 worth of items were stolen. I never expected this at a yard sale. Yes, I should have kept watch over it continuously.
Dogs at music in the park
We are senior citizens and enjoy going to listen to the music in the park. We really don’t know why people insist on bringing their dogs. There are so many of us who go to listen to the music, not watch their dogs. It is very annoying. Please people, leave you mutts home.
Loud popping mufflers
Lately I have been exposed to this new theory that a “popping,” like a shot gun, muffler is cool. It scares me when I’m in my yard. Sounds like a drive-by out here in God’s country. I can only imagine what that back pressure is doing internally to your engine. Backfires are not cool. Why would you want everyone noticing you? I sure hope you don’t make any bad choices, bc you would be easily identified. Motorcycles seem much louder lately also, and there’s a generation that isn’t sure when and how to shift. Again, why draw attention to your ignorance? I guess, don’t worry, mommy will buy you another one if you ruin it. Haha.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED
• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.
• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.
• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.
• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are writtendowninblack-and-whiteandcanbecrossedoffascompleted. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.
• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.
• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.
• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.
• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.
STRANGE BUT TRUE

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING
Apply lessons learned during the pandemic. A recent Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. government and Eurostat data found that roughly 9.6 million workers in the United States lost their jobs in the first three quarters of 2020. That period coincides with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. When forced to confront sudden and unexpected job losses, millions of individuals learned how to get by on less income. Cost-saving measures adopted during the pandemic can be continued or reimplemented, helping individuals to combat higher energy costs and other rising expenses.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 people were treated for fireworks injuries in emergency rooms in 2020. In addition, injuries and deaths from fireworks increased by 50 percent between 2019 and 2020. Forty-four percent of those injuries were burns, 30 percent involved the hands and fingers and 22 percent affected the head, face and ears. USCPSC data also indicated that 15 percent of injuries affected the eyes. The majority of injuries (66 percent) occurred around the July 4th holiday, but it’s important that individuals exercise caution whenever they celebrate with fireworks. And those precautionary measures should remain in place when using sparklers, which the USCPSC indicates caused 900 injuries in 2020.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
Continue to be loyal: A recent study from researchers at the Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. That highlights just how valuable repeat customers are to small businesses. Consumers who have had positive experiences with small businesses in their communities in the past can continue to support those companies by looking to them first when they need new products or services. Doing so not only helps small businesses retain more customers, but it increases the likelihood that consumers will again have positive buying experiences.

COLD MEDICINE
INGREDIENTS
CAN RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE (NAPSI)—There’s a reason it’s called the “common” cold: Adults have an average two to three colds per year and children even more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Problem
Most people recover from a cold within a week to 10 days. But decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications, according to the American Heart Association.
Read The Label
Be sure to read labels on over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have high blood pressure (HBP). Some contain decongestants such as oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine.
You should also look for warnings related to high blood pressure or HBP medication and talk to your health care professional before taking OTC medications or supplements. And don’t stop taking prescribed medications without talking to your doctor.
Some OTCs are also high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. So look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for the words “sodium” or “soda.” If you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources—and one dose of some OTCs can contain more than a whole day’s allowance.
Be Careful With Supplements Or Natural (Naturopathic) Remedies
Special pills, vitamins or drinks don’t substitute for prescription medications and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your health care provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised and may interfere with other medications. Some, like natural licorice and diet pills, can even raise your blood pressure.
What Else To Watch For
Other drugs and substances that can raise your blood pressure include:
• Alcohol
• Amphetamines
• Antidepressants
• Atypical Antipsychotics (such as clozapine and olanzapine)
• Caffeine
• Oral Contraceptives
• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, for example)
• Illicit Drugs
• Systemic Corticosteroids (for example, prednisone and methylprednisolone)
Learn More: For more information about keeping your heart healthy, go to www. heart.org/hbp. The maker of Coricidin HBP, Bayer Healthcare LLC, is a proud sponsor of the American Heart Association’s High Blood Pressure Effort.

Q&A Master Gardeners with
Why would my garden always look so far behind my neighbors’ gardens? What might I be doing differently/ wrong?
It is always encouraged for questions like this for you to consider reaching out to your local County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension as most have agents or Master Gardeners that would be happy to do site visits to help you assess your garden and further your gardening knowledge. Itpotentiallycouldbethesoilandhow yourneighborisamendingit.Itcould
be potentially plant selection. Or it could be planting timing or planting skills. There are so many variables that could affect your garden versus your neighbors.’ One thing that is pretty universal is that gardeners on average are pretty open to talking about gardening, especially their successes. There are vast amounts of research and studies regarding how gardening particularly community gardens build social communities. So, take a deep breath and ask your neighbor their thoughts. I’m sure they would be happy to share. Also,
if you are looking for educational opportunities to broaden your knowledge, reach out to your local CCE; they may have a program like Seed to Supper that might give you the tools and knowledge to be the best gardener you can be. CCEs are great resources for all kinds of information, so take advantage of them as each county has one.
PS. While gardening on many levels is experiential learning, “Learning by Doing,” you rarely are doing somethingwrong…it’sjustaprocess of learning what may work better for you and your specific garden!

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam MazzottaAdopting a “War Dog”
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just watched an older movie about a military dog, called “Max.” How can I adopt a dog like that? -- T.T. via email
DEAR T.T.: While “Max” is a compelling movie, adopting a former military working dog takes a fair amount of research on your part, and the ability to care for dogs that have high energy and need plenty of attention and continuing training. All military dog adoptions are handled through the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Adoption Program at Lackland AFB in Texas.
Dogs eligible for adoption were retired due to age, injury or sickness. Not all dogs saw combat. Some worked in national security, while others were trained as working dogs but did not meet the standards for military service.
Be prepared for a long wait a er submitting the application -- up to a year or more. First priority for adoption goes to law-enforcement agencies, if the dog is still t for duty. If not, the dog’s handler can adopt it. Only a er that do dogs become available for adoption to civilians. Some dogs, sadly, are not adoptable due to temperament or severe injuries.
In addition to patience, be aware that you don’t have control over what type of dog is made available; although you can state your preference on the application. Be prepared for some pre-adoption expenses as well: If selected to adopt a MWD, you’ll need to travel to where the dog is being kept (most likely, Lackland) at least twice -- once to be interviewed and meet the dog, and again to pick it up if your application is approved.

Behind the Scenes at Rochester Freecycle
BY DP DUNNsay you have an item you no longer want, but it’s too good to toss out. Garage sale? Way too busy. Donate it to a charitable group? Set it at the end of the driveway with a big sign that says FREE? Or give it away on the Freecycle Network.
According to their website, “ e Freecycle Network® is made up of more than 5,000 local town groups with over 9 million members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonpro t movement of people who are giving (and getting) stu for free in their own towns and keeping good stu out of land lls. Membership is free, and everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.”
Meet Patti, one of the Rochester Freecycle Group moderators. Patti, how would you brie y describe the Rochester Freecycle Group?
e Rochester NY Freecycle group is one of the 5,357 worldwide Freecycle groups where our 4,750 + members (out of 10,765,511 worldwide) o er and request still usable items to keep them out of land lls.
How do people meet to give or receive an item?
ere are a few options. Members can come to your home, meet up at a location convenient to both parties, or if you feel particularly magnanimous, you can o er to drop the item o !
Is this a ‘quid pro quo’ arrangement? Do I have to give you one thing in exchange for another?
Not at all! While there are a few guidelines having to do with how o en you request a speci c item, there are no quali cations such as making your rst post an o er, balancing the number of wanted vs o er posts, etc. In fact, there is no borrowing, swapping/trading unless you have you own “friend’s circle.”
What can, or cannot, be o ered via Freecycle?
KEEP IT FREE, LEGAL & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES. is means, for example:
* No tobacco, rearms or other weapons, profane or sexual content, alcohol;
*Nomedicationsofanykind,includingallRxandOTCmedicines, vitamins, creams, lotions, including some medical equipment and supplies ;
* Personal care items must be unopened;
* Food must be unopened;
* No yard sales, Curb Alerts or o ering or requesting money for ANY reason;
* No animal posting; What are the oddest or most unusual items you’ve seen on the Rochester Freecycle group?
We had an “o er” post where someone was giving away an old porch because they were getting a new one. e catch was
that the person would have to dismantle the concrete base and steps and remove them from the property. We did not allow it because of the “strings attached.”
An ‘honorable mention’ goes to a man that asked for extralarge false teeth to chew through his wife’s bad cooking, and a replacement hearing aid with an on and o switch because his current one doesn’t allow him to shut it o and all his wife does is complain all day long.
Is it di cult to join?
Not at all. Signup is found at https://www.freecycle.org/signup. Once there, you enter a user name, email, and password. We ask that user names be “family friendly.” en you look for town groups you would like to join and click “Join is Group.” Some groups prefer to approve new members and others let you join immediately but o en put you on moderation until you have posted without any issues.
What do you want everyone to know about Freecycle and why should they join?
Freecycle is a nice way to give back to the community. It gives those asking for items a place to post without judgment for the most part. ose who o er items are o en “paying it forward.” Yes, some members are looking for someone else to get rid of their junk for them, but this is Rochester; those “useless items” have been turned into pieces of art and grace our city and suburbs with beauty. During Covid, I received quite a few messages asking me please to reopen for posting. ese messages were from members who wanted to make sure everyone had what they needed to get through the long pandemic isolation. I love this group!

Filling
3 cups pecan halves, divided
2 cups packed brown sugar
3 eggs
4 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

Here’s a tip
• Assorted hardware seems to collect in big, random piles in our tiny workshop. Nails, screws and bolts of all sizes are mixed together, tossed on the bench when a project is complete. Every so o en, the kids and I make a game of sorting and organizing it using a mu n pan. It’s easy to sort by size and type!
• “A er cleaning my paintbrushes recently, I decided to hang them from the clothesline to dry. It worked great, as the bristles were nice and so when they were dry. I think it helped to hang straight down.” -- O.C. in Washington
• Before you start a painting project and head to the hardware store, determine what you might need and raid your recycling bin for containers.

BY HENRY BOLTINOFFTO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.Doctors Won’t Prescribe Hormone Therapy to Woman Over 60
DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recently published column, you stated, “As always, the decision belongs to the patient,” while addressing a concern about the benefits and risks of stopping a statin drug. Oh, really? Then, why is it that, once I turned 60, not a single doctor will prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to stop my debilitating post-menopausal symptoms? After suffering from menopausal symptoms starting at age 42, I was finally prescribed HRT at age 57. What relief I felt, as it was the only remedy to alleviate my hot flashes, weight gain, lack of sleep and vaginal dryness.
Once I hit 60, I was ordered to stop HRT, and no one since will prescribe it for me now. I am 66, suffer from hot flashes daily and have my sleep interrupted at least five times a night with terrible night sweats. I have tried just about every over-the-counter offering with zero effectiveness.
I will gladly trade the greater risk of heart attack and stroke, and the possible shorter life span, for relief from symptoms that affect my daily quality of life. Clearly, the choice is not mine, because if I had a choice, I would ask for continued prescriptions of HRT to give me relief. Why don’t I have that choice as a patient? -- R.M.T.
ANSWER: A patient always has the right to refuse a treatment recommended from a physician. However, the physician has the obligation to consider the risks and benefits of a treatment, and is not obliged to prescribe a treatment that they do not think is appropriate.
If a patient asks me for a treatment that has been shown to be ineffective and has the potential for serious adverse effects, I don’t prescribe it, but will work with the patient to find alternative treatments. For example, some nonhormonal prescription treatments are moderately effective for hot flashes and sleep disturbance, and topical estrogen is very effective for vaginal dryness.
However, the case of HRT for symptoms of menopause is more complicated, because estrogen is the most effective treatment we have for menopausal symptoms, particularly for hot flashes. There are risks to HRT, but the benefits for some women are so great that they are willing to accept some risks.
You mentioned the risk of heart disease and stroke. A landmark study called the Women’s Health Initiative helped to define and quantify those (and other) risks. Its effect has been to dramatically reduce the prescribing of menopausal hormone therapy, but the results should not be interpreted to mean that hormone treatment is always inappropriate, even in women who are in their mid-60s, where risks are higher.
Moreover, a woman’s entire health status should be considered when deciding whether to prescribe hormone treatments. In women with a history of an estrogen-dependent tumor (like many breast cancers), a history of a blood clot or a stroke, or a few other issues, the harm almost certainly outweighs the benefits. Otherwise, a wise clinician looks at the patient’s risk for heart disease, blood clots and similar conditions. Women at a very high risk for heart disease should probably avoid estrogen. Using lower-dose estrogen by patch (rather than pills) is wise for women at moderate risk, such as those who are in their 60s.
Physicians do not want to prescribe medications that will harm their patients, and most have stopped prescribing menopausal hormone therapy entirely for women, to prevent disease. However, it still has a role in treating symptoms. I recommend you seek out an expert in treatment of menopausal treatments and have a frank discussion about your willingness to assume risk in order to have a better quality of life.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA A KEY TO COMPASSIONATE CARE
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementiacanbebeneficialtobothdementiasufferersandtheircaregivers. Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?
HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS
is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the rst few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the brous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also o er surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

HOW FLUORIDATED WATER HELPS OUR TEETH
Seventy-five percent of U.S. households have drinking water treated with fluoride at a level that prevents tooth decay and is safe for drinking. Because fluoride occurs naturally in water but not always at levels high enough to help protect teeth, it is often added to municipal tap water. Bottled water doesn’t contain fluoride, so you may need to supplement with a fluoridated mouthwash if your main source of drinkingwaterisbottledorwellwater. Fluoride helps children’s developing teeth by entering the bloodstream where it’s carried to the jawbone to help form healthy tooth enamel. Adultsandchildrenbothbenefitfrom fluoride because it mixes with saliva in the mouth to neutralize decaycausing acids and helps repair tooth enamel.
In addition to including fluoride in
your oral hygiene regimen, we have lots of good ideas on how to help keep your mouth a healthy one. Because we understand that conscientious dental care is a crucial part of overall health, we strongly believe that one of the most important services we render our patients is a plan for preventive care. Along with daily brushing and flossing, one crucial tool to your good dental health is regular professional care. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is located at 6 Batavia City Centre;callusat 585.343.4246. P.S. Getting fluoride from a variety of sources (drinking water, toothpaste, mouthwash, dental treatments) is an excellent way to prevent tooth decay.

Did you know?
While it might be tempting to lower mower blades when summer temperatures reach their hottest, it is possible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their mower blades too low, as doing so can cause significant damage to the lawn. Lawns that have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that exposure can lead to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suffer from weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and an eyesore. When mowing, homeowners should remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. Mowing at this height will promote strong roots and protect the grass when the weather gets especially hot in the summer.
TREE SERVICES
Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs.
The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE
Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

HOW TO EARN A COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
To improve one’s odds of getting a scholarship, consider the following tips.
• Getinvolvedwiththecommunity. Manyscholarshipsponsorsseek individualswhoarecommittedto volunteerism. Plus, volunteering for various groups puts students in the path of information about scholarships from these organizations.
• Use scholarship search engines. Those who search for scholarship sponsors should find plenty of results if they peruse scholarship search engines such as Scholarships. com, CollegeBoard.com and FastWeb.com.
• Check the local newspaper. The coupon section of the Sunday newspaper may feature scholarships, as might the classified section. This is a great resource for finding locally based scholarships.
• Use networking contacts. Students should ask anyone they know if they are aware of any scholarship opportunities. Studentswhodeveloparapport with guidance counselors or the financial aid department at their prospective colleges or universities may learn about scholarship opportunities that are not highly publicized. These people may have the inside track on scholarship information.
• Apply for all available scholarships. Now is not the time for students to become lazy. Students should apply for as any scholarships for which they meet the eligibility requirements.
You love what you do, now love where you do it.
