PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS
Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.
Racing greyhounds aren’t predators; many just love to chase things. As The Greyhound Project notes, retired racing greyhounds have been trained to chase lures. That love of the chase may lead some to believe greyhounds are natural predators, but that’s not the case. Many greyhounds just love to run, and some retired racing greyhounds really love to run. However, when they’re no longer racing and have fully adapted to a new home, many greyhounds become disinterested in chasing.

PAW’S CORNER
Page 4
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to share a tale of two cats. One is “Bean,” a chocolate Burmese. Bean had a brother, “Coco.” I purchased the two of them when they were kittens. Sadly, Coco passed away at age 3 from cancer. Bean grieved for a very long time. A few months ago, I met someone in an online group who also had two Burmese cats, and one of them passed away. The surviving cat, “Storm,” was inconsolable. Like Bean, she roamed her house day and night, meowing for her brother to reappear. Storm’s owner had health issues and was looking to place her in a new home. I had a feeling that together we could help both of these grieving cats. But cats, especially adult cats, often do not get along -- especially when one is introduced into the other’s home. However, both cats were fixed, which helps reduce territorialism and aggression, among other problems. We both agreed to a two-week trial; if the cats were too stressed out or fought, then it was a no-go. Fortunately, after a cautious sniffing-out period during their introduction, Bean and Storm snuggled right up together. They have been buddies ever since. Neither of them goes meowing around at night. Bean and Storm are a new family, and they couldn’t be happier. Thought I would share! -- Dana A., via email DEAR DANA: Thank you for a heartwarming story! You did the right thing by setting up a trial period, because cats that don’t like each other may escalate aggression with each encounter, and the trauma is bad for both. But it sounds like Bean and Storm have settled in nicely. Congratulations! Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Beat the heat during a summer wedding Tailor the reception menu to the weather. A large, heavy meal may not be what guests are hoping for when temperatures are especially hot. In such situations, provide some cool, light fare, such as chilled salads or cold soups, as first courses. Sorbet can be a cool palate cleanser, and grilled meats and vegetables will make for a satisfying, light main course. Ice cream cake may be a decadent option in lieu of more traditional wedding cake.

Prevent bugs, sap and other substances from ruining a vehicle Tree sap Although tree sap won’t cause immediate damage to vehicle paint, it should not be ignored. Over time, sap can become more difficult to remove, etch through the clear coat on the vehicle and cause discoloration. When the temperature is hot, damage from sap can accelerate. On windows and windshields, drivers may be able to gently remove dried sap with a razor blade. However, use cleaning products on more delicate paint. Automotive stores sell speciality sap and tar cleaners. Otherwise, you can try rubbing alcohol. It may take a few attempts to remove sap entirely.

Hamlin Town Hall I went to town hall to pay for my dog’s license. It was a pleasure to speak to Patty Jo at the office. She accommodated me even though I didn’t bring any of my paper work with me. Sad to say that sometimes people are very disconnected and don’t even smile or say hello when on the job. But this was not the case with Patty Jo. She not only did her job but was very personable. You can’t beat that! Thanks! Hope to see you next year!

Our thanks I would like to recognize Alexander CSD teachers, essential staffing and all employees expressing the amazing job done during a challenging and uncertain school year resulting from COVID. Without your dedication and flexibility, our children would have suffered. Your efforts do not go unrecognized by the community. Thank you for all you do for the children! E. W.
Beautiful flowers The flowers in Vitale Park are glorious. Many thanks to the people who give the plants TLC!
Donut shortage The [local store] in [local town] on [local street] doesn’t make enough of the good donuts in the morning. If you get there by 7am, all of the good donut choices are gone, and the bad donuts linger all day long. How hard is it to just make more of the good donuts? Everyone wins. To the donut manager, just know we all see you.
Rude, impatient driver I got stuck in the middle of an intersection. Traffic was moving when I entered, but it abruptly stopped. When the light changed, I was stuck under the light. When you got your green light, did you have to blast your horn? I had nowhere to go until the car in front of me moved. You were an elderly lady who then turned into the grocery store. I could see why 4 seconds was too long for you to wait. Impatient and rude! Seniors apartment costs Hi. I live in a seniors apartment complex in [local town]. We recently got a notice that they will be raising our rent about 30 or 35 dollars this September and then 3% for the years after. They forget that we are senior citizens on a fixed income. This wouldn't be so bad, but they have not done improvements. A couple of the buildings have no fire alarms; in some of the buildings, the security does not work. Some have not had phone service for a few weeks. Inside, our apartments have had the same carpets and kitchen floors and have not had a fresh coat of paint in years, but the rent still keeps going up. I think someone should look into this place.
Bias So tired of people always complaining about the less fortunate on unemployment, but not once do you hear about all these greedy companies that received benefits and PPP money that never trickled down! Too many tailgaters There are far too many tailgaters! Tailgating is illegal, dangerous, and very rude! Please stay 3 seconds behind the vehicle driving in front of you. If you have to go faster, pass by, but do not tailgate.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Nearly every pool owner has had to deal with algae at some point in his or her life. One of the best ways to minimize algae spores in the pool besides high-sanitation levels is through routine brushing and vacuuming. According to Leslie’s Pool Supplies, pool walls, floors and steps are the most common places to find algae in a pool. If left untreated, algae can burrow their roots inside the cracks on these surfaces, making them very difficult to remove. That’s why weekly (or more frequent) brushing and vacuuming can help keep surfaces clean and algae-free. Vacuuming also helps remove debris that has fallen into the water and sunk, which can decompose and contribute to water cloudiness.
RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
SENSITIVE TEETH Sweet treats and frozen desserts can be a delicious indulgence for many people, but for millions of others, the mere thought of biting into something cold or sugary can cause them to cringe. Even hot foods and beverages can cause major tooth pain in some people. This is due to tooth enamel that has been worn down or cracked, and there are some remedies to try to resolve the problem. First, make a dentist appointment to ensure the problem is not more serious. In addition, avoid or limit all acidic and sugary foods and beverages since they can aggravate the issue. Changing toothpaste to one designed for sensitive teeth is another option, as is using a softbristled toothbrush.
Keeping up with regular dental checkups will give your dentist the opportunity to keep an eye on your health as well as any possible areas of developing dental problems. And if you conscientiously follow your dentist’s recommendations for at-home care, you will be more likely to have fewer potential problems. When was your last dental visit? Now would be a good time to schedule your next exam. If you don’t have a family dentist, we are accepting new patients at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we welcome your call at 585.343.4246.
P.S. You may think that the harder you scrub your teeth the cleaner and healthier they will be, but aggressive brushing can wear away tooth enamel, leading to sensitivity and even cavities.

Does Oatmeal Contain Roundup Herbicide? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Experts advised us to “throw out sugar-laden cereals” and eat a healthy breakfast, such as oatmeal. Now we are told that oatmeal contains a significant amount of glyphosate, which they say is an ingredient in Roundup! Are we poisoning our children? -- A.D. ANSWER: There have been traces of glyphosate (an herbicide) found in oatmeal and other cereals. However, as always, the dose makes the poison. The Environmental Protection Agency has set a level of 30 parts per million, below which the exposure is considered safe. A 2018 study by the Environmental Working Group found levels of glyphosate in oatmeal breakfast cereals to be between 0.5 and 1 parts per million. It is unlikely that consumption of these cereals causes any significant health risks. Nobody likes the idea of eating an herbicide, but these are very low amounts, and some experts have questioned the specificity of the detection method used. The same EWG report found that organic cereals had less, but often still some, glyphosate in them. Although the levels in both conventional and organic cereals were safe, glyphosate itself is found at generally lower levels in organic products. Unfortunately, there have not been good studies on residual amounts of organic pesticides (some of which are substantially more toxic than glyphosate) that might be found in organically grown food. I agree with reducing the simple sugars found in many cereals, especially those marketed to children. However, I recommend more protein for breakfast than is found in oatmeal. You can add more with nuts, egg whites or seeds. ***

Honeybees flitting from flower to flower is one of the first signs that warm weather has arrived. Honeybees are a welcome presence in the garden, pollenating plants and contributing to local honey supplies. Despite their importance in the ecosystem, honeybees are in grave danger. In 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama created a task force comprised of various agencies to address the growing issue of rapidly diminishing honeybees and other pollinating insects. This initiative was a response to reports from American beekeepers indicating hive deaths have been on the rise, gravely affecting the honeybee population. Honeybees pollinate many fruit trees, nut plants and vegetables, playing a crucial role for many nations’ food industries. In addition to government involvement and honeybee conservation methods designed by environmental agencies, there are many things that regular citizens and homeowners can do to protect honeybees this summer.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One attraction that is synonymous with fairs and amusement parks is the Ferris wheel. The original Ferris wheel was designed and constructed for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Since then, Ferris wheels have become the most common type of amusement rides at state fairs and other attractions. However “pleasure wheels” and “great wheels” have appeared throughout history in areas of Persia, India and Bulgaria.

Brockport Man Gives Peek into Extensive Collection BY SCOTT WURTZEL
A
lmost everyone has at least one hobby. Hobbies help us get through the day-to-day grind of life. One of the more common hobbies out there is collecting, from stamps to cars. For most of his life, Albert McBride of Brockport has been collecting an assortment of items. To call it just a collection may not be doing it justice; it’s more like multiple collections. These collections are kept in a large barn, where they are neatly stored and displayed. In fact, they are stored so nicely it feel more like a museum than a barn. McBride takes pride in his collection, one that he started well over 60 years ago. One of the many collections McBride has is his large number of license plates he displays. “The first years that they made you have a license plate, you had to make your own,” McBride explains. “A lot of people used a piece of leather, some used a piece cardboard to make their own, and they eventually got better and better at making them.” This collection spans over five decades, and shows the changes made to license plates throughout the 20th century. Another interesting collection is McBride’s assortment of vehicles and farming equipment. The pieces vary in age from the first World War to the late ‘70s. McBride has collected and taken care of multiple buggies, even one that needed to be horse-drawn. He has a few ‘70s era cars that have low mileage and look as though they just came off the lot. McBride also owns various pieces of older farm equipment, including multiple tractors. All the vehicles in his collection have been well kept, and really show the care that has been put into them. If he had to name a favorite, it might be his old manure spreader. When looking at it, one can see the effort put into its restoration. Despite being of older design, it looks like it’s in brand-new condition with a fresh coat of paint. “That manure spreader right there, I restored that back to brand-new,” McBride states. “I cleaned it all up and painted it. Took me all one winter. Took it completely apart and made it just like new.” McBride’s collections are not just automobile related. “It has a little bit of everything and anything,” he comments. In his office, there are a variety of items, all of which are a look back at history, giving the impression that one has traveled back in time. Each item seems to have a story behind it, and McBride knows every one. One item in particular stood out; it was a much older looking bicycle. Like all the other items, it is well kept; it is a mix of green and white, and seems like it could be ridden today. “That bicycle, brand-new, has never been ridden,” states McBride. “It was bought back in the ‘50s and was in a restaurant, hung from the ceiling since it was brand-new. When they ran out of business, I bought it at the auction.” Having a hobby, collecting in this case, can bring happiness to a person’s life, and when you see the ambition another person has

with a hobby, it can inspire others. Experiencing an impressive collection like McBride’s may cause you to want to preserve history, perhaps even starting a collection of your own. McBride is proud of what he has collected, but he doesn’t much care for what happens to it after he’s It has gone. He enjoys what he has, saying “It has been fun a little collecting all this stuff over bit of the years.”

Some classes may offer discounts to large groups, so enlist some friends if the goal of the night is fun and not necessarily romance.

Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
More and More Scams Aimed at Seniors Most scams keep repeating year after year. After all, the scammers are making big money doing those Nigerian grandson/auto-warranty scams, so why would they drop them? However, new ones keep popping up. If you shop online, beware of accidentally typing in the wrong name. Scammers have created websites with actual information from real store websites, but with a slightly different name. If you shop at a fake store and put in your credit card, the scammers will have immediate access to it. If you learned how to do Zoom or other online conferences to talk to your family, beware any emails or messages you get about your Zoom. Scammers have set up thousands of Zoom-related internet links for the sole purpose of getting you to click on one they send you. The instant you do, malware (malicious software) is loaded into your computer. From that point all your personal data is at risk. Ignore those emails or messages. If there’s a problem with your Zoom, go straight to the Zoom site and check it from there. In a sign of the times, there are fake COVID contact tracers that ask for personal information and Social Security numbers. Hang up if they call you. A big problem is that often we don’t report the scams. We’re embarrassed, or we’re afraid the scammers will retaliate, or we just don’t know where to report it. If nothing else, you can call the police. If the scam happened on the Internet, contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (www.ic3.gov). The center has logged over 6 million complaint calls -- a big portion from those over age 60. Scammers are everywhere, and it’s up to us to stop them in their tracks by being wary of phone calls, emails and the internet. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

Washington Towers
Obey the rules. Movie theaters, airline cabins, libraries, and various other places have rules in place governing the use of mobile phones. These rules are designed to ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience. Breaking these rules can be a safety risk in certain situations, but is more often merely inconsiderate of those around you. If you must use a mobile phone but you’re in a restricted area, excuse yourself and tend to the matter elsewhere.

* Remove all of the air from a plastic storage bag with a drinking straw. Slip the straw into the bag and close as much as possible. Then suck any air out through the straw, and quickly pull out and close in a single motion. Your leftovers will stay fresh longer, and foods may stack better in the freezer. * And speaking of straws, did you know you can use them to curl your hair? Wind sections of damp hair around a plastic straw and secure the ends with a bobby pin. Dry in the sun or use a hair dryer on low heat. Remove and spritz with hair spray. * Here’s an oldie but a goodie! Iced coffee is at its best when brewed with twice the usual amount of ground coffee, because the coffee is diluted by the melting ice cubes. Or use regular-strength brewed ice coffee and serve over coffee ice cubes. They’re easy to prepare: Pour cool brewed coffee into icecube trays and freeze. * Lemon juice can bring out the flavor of mushrooms. I keep a little spray bottle to keep lemon juice accessible in the kitchen. I find it’s good for all kinds of things, like avocadoes and apples. I spray the cut side to keep them from browning. It’s also great for salad greens. -- T.T. in New Jersey GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT
Village Park Apartments 61 Sokol Drive, Attica, NY 14011 For more information or application call: 585-591-2950
(NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.
APARTMENTS AVAILABLE
Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing.
62 years or older, disabled regardless of age Accessible Units • Off Street Parking • Laundry on premises Appliances • Carpeting • Community Room We maintain landscaping, trash removal & snowplowing. Professionally managed.
By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.”
Q and D Management
Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively.
