PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS Pet Place _____________________2

Fleas: Fleas are parasitic blood-suckers that reside on the coats of pets. Scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and tapeworms (which are carried by fleas) can be symptomatic of flea infestation. Some people may notice actual fleas on their dogs, while others may identify the flea dirt against a dog’s skin. Flea prevention medicines and medicated shampoos can help keep fleas at bay.

SUMMER CLEARANCE PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Heatstroke Almost Killed Her Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I never keep my dog “Alfie” in the car, even on cool days. Last Sunday, I took Alfie to the park to get some exercise. It was hot, and after a short while Alfie came back to me, panting heavily. He was still panting on the drive home and seemed lethargic, so I called his veterinarian, who said to take him to the emergency vet immediately. There, he was diagnosed with heatstroke! They treated him and he’s doing much better, but I was shocked at how quickly Alfie developed a heat injury from being outside. Please warn your readers that dogs are very vulnerable to summer heat. -Chris in Portland, Oregon DEAR CHRIS: You are so right! I’m glad Alfie is doing well and that tragedy was averted by your instinct to contact the vet. Just like humans, dogs need to acclimate to their environment. Sudden weather extremes like excessive heat or freezing cold are very difficult to adjust to. Dogs have far fewer sweat glands than humans; they manage their body temperature in other ways, such as panting when it’s hot. So if we’re feeling the heat, dogs are feeling it even more! It’s important to watch for signs of heat injury, especially when outdoors. Excessive panting is a key sign, as is lethargy and excessive drooling. Other symptoms include reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination and collapse. Immediate treatment is needed to prevent serious injury or death. Keep plenty of cool water on hand for your dog to drink, both indoors and out. Never leave them in the car, even for a minute. At home, keep the air moving with fans, and cool down the environment with an air conditioner.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which to avoid. Nutrition is not always foremost on the minds of college freshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

COME VISIT US!

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

Can Lyme Disease Lead to Parkinson’s

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

By Keith Roach, M.D.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can Lyme disease send a person into Parkinson’s disease? I tested positive for Lyme -- I had the bulls-eye rash, fever and terrible headaches. After a month on doxycycline, my left arm started shaking and my neurologist diagnosed me with Parkinson’s. The doctor said it had nothing to do with the Lyme disease. What is your opinion? -- S.M. ANSWER: I can absolutely understand why you might suspect that the neurologist could be wrong. The coincidence seems too much to believe. However, I think your neurologist is probably correct. The different types of neurological complications of Lyme disease are many and varied. The most common are any combination of meningitis symptoms (inflammation of the lining of the brain, with headache, fever, stiff neck and light sensitivity); disorders of the cranial nerves (especially the facial nerve, so people with neurological Lyme disease can look like they have Bell’s palsy); and damage to peripheral nerves, causing pain and weakness or numbness, often resembling sciatica (but may include other parts of the body). A detailed neurological exam by a neurologist would look for signs of Parkinson’s disease -- not just the tremor you describe, but also muscle rigidity and changes in gait. These would be very unusual in Lyme disease. I did find cases resembling some aspects of Parkinson’s disease, but they improved with treatment. It is possible that the stress of the Lyme disease hastened the onset of Parkinson’s disease you were destined to get. I say your neurologist is “probably correct” because what I found -- absence of data to support a correlation -- does not mean that there is no correlation, and it is possible that time may prove Lyme disease is connected to Parkinson’s. However, I think it’s unlikely.

BIRTH CONTROL AND ORAL HEALTH Whether you are taking birth control for its original intention or for one of the myriad other reasons it is prescribed, you have most likely heard of many of the possible side effects of taking it. But are you aware of the impact birth control can have on your oral health? The fluctuation of hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, can result in problems such as gum disease, which not only causes inflamed, often bleeding gums, but has also been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, and other conditions. Fortunately, most forms of modern birth control have lower levels of problematic hormones in order to reduce such risks.

Our many years of training and experience have made it abundantly clear that the connection between oral health and a patient’s overall health is a strong one. We therefore will use the many techniques available in today’s dentistry to diagnose, treat, restore, and promote total patient well-being. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL offers this column as a way of educating the general public about the benefits of sound oral health. If we can help, either by answering questions or providing comprehensive dental care, please call us at 6 Batavia City Centre, 585.343.4246.

P.S. Smoking while on birth control results in an increased risk of potential side effects, including those that impact oral health.

Safeguard yourself from summertime ailments and accidents Insect bites and stings: Insects return when temperatures rise. Mosquitoes may be the biggest nuisance, but biting flies and wasps also make formidable foes. Use insect repellent to keep the bugs away. Wear long pants and check for ticks after hiking.

Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Monitor soil moisture. Soil moisture, or a lack thereof, can help homeowners determine if their plants are struggling to survive the heat. To check soil moisture levels, use a ruler or even your finger, sticking either two inches into the ground where you suspect the soil is drying out. If the soil is damp two inches below the surface, then your plants are likely retaining enough moisture to withstand the heat. If the soil is dry two inches below, then you may want to give the soil a deep soak.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES Make your own meals. Meal plans may be ideal for college students during their freshmen years, when students may still be adjusting to campus life. But older college students can skip the meal plan in favor of preparing their own meals. Doing so can save students substantial amounts of money, and some students may even prefer the variety available at the local grocery store over the more limited offerings available at dining halls or other campus eateries.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

Anyanka Katz wins the 2021 Ryan Scholarship BY SUSAN COYLE

C

ongratulations to Anyanka Katz, winner of the 2021 Norman V. Ryan Scholarship through Monroe County 4-H Youth Development. Anyanka, a member of the Mariah Meadows 4-H Club, will be heading to Niagara University in the fall to begin her studies in Biochemistry. A huge portion of Anyanka’s 4-H experience has been learning more about horses. She was able to go to multiple other barns with her 4-H experience. She said, “talking to other kids and experiencing other methods made me a better rider and greatly improved my horsemanship.” She learned a lot about horses, from care and riding to anatomy, injuries, and illnesses, and even how doctors treat and save animals. “As a result, I chose to pursue a study of biochemistry with a minor in public health because I want to become a medical doctor. I am currently planning to go into pain management after seeing how pain debilitates people and animals and prevents them from enjoying their lives.”

Anyanka Katz

The Norman V. Ryan scholarship is presented to a Monroe County graduating high school senior who has demonstrated leadership and community service. Special consideration is given to teens who are planning to enter a field of study or employment as a result of their 4-H activities and experiences.

Anyanka credits her 4-H experience as an important part of her growth. She said, “When I started with 4-H, I didn’t talk a lot. I lacked confidence and often just didn’t know what to say... My 4-H club gave me opportunities to talk about things I cared about, helped me explore new ideas, and gave me confidence in what I knew. The confidence I gained was not only evident in my knowledge of horses or limited to 4-H. There were improvements in school and in my other activities. I was a captain my second year of Junior Varsity Basketball and again my second year of Varsity Basketball. Academically, I graduated Summa Cum Laude and as a National Honor Society member.” Susan Coyle, 4-H Program Leader said, “It is a pleasure to honor Anyanka with the Norman V. Ryan 4-H Scholarship. Anya has been able to learn and develop life skills through her 4-H experience. It is particularly exciting to see her pursuing studies and a career field that were inspired by the experiences she took part in through 4-H.” Through 4-H, Anyanka has been a role model to others on how to treat horses physically and emotionally, helped plan parties and winter fest as a teen leader, and helped less experienced riders at Intercounty. She has also been involved with volunteering in the 4-H booth at the State Fair by doing presentations and talking to fair goers about the 4-H program. The skills and confidence Anyanka has gained in 4-H, coupled with the satisfaction of continued learning and community service, have prepared her for the transition to college. Everyone involved with the Monroe County 4-H program wishes her well in her new adventures!

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Exercise Can Reduce Risk of Alzheimer’s Can we do this? Exercise twice a week for 10 minutes each time to prevent Alzheimer’s disease? Of course we can. Researchers examined the records and followed the progress of 250,000 patients who had mild cognitive impairment. They concluded that moderate physical activity more than once a week reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 18%. We need to do more for our brain health than work the daily crossword puzzle or brush up on our chess skills. Physical exercise protects the brain, too, per the study. The key is that it should be moderate to vigorous exercise. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, examples of moderate exercise include walking 3-4 mph (a brisk walk while you’re still able to hold a conversation), vacuuming and washing windows, mowing the lawn and doubles tennis. Other sources are more specific: water aerobics for 30 minutes and raking leaves for 30 minutes. For comparison, examples of light exercise include washing dishes and using a computer. Vigorous exercises are things like shoveling, singles tennis and playing basketball or soccer. Having said that, there are more parts of our bodies that need exercise than just our brains. That’s where more time in an activity comes into play. Instead of a mere 10 minutes per day, we’re told to shoot for 150 minutes of exercise per week, or 30 minutes onr five days. One place to start developing an exercise plan is Mayoclinic.org. Type “moderate exercise” in the search box and scroll down the results until you find something interesting. Among the 600 choices are frequency of workout, using weighted hula hoops, Zumba, secrets to a healthy heart and so much more. The earlier in life we start exercising for our brains and bodies, the longer we’ll stay healthy as we age. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

now and past, our gratitude forever. Love and Prayers, Carol R. Rowley

In Honor of Rauber Family, owners of Agway - Wayland, NY The friendly Rauber family will no longer tend the store. Their welcome smiles and greetings, which would meet us at the door, the years of dedication, always ready to assist, built many deep relations and sincerely will be missed. We wish the very best for you, in all your new endeavors, and please remember,

Lifeguards at Deep Run Beach Thank you to the Deep Run Beach lifeguards who safeguarded my Border Collie who had run across Rt. 364 to the beach to take a swim in the lake. They secured her with a rope; they had and tried to find her owner in a nearby neighborhood with no success. Without knowing if anyone would show up, they held on to her, saving her from traffic, until I showed up in my car to bring her back to our home on the other side of Rt. 364. Thank you so much for preventing her from getting hit by a car. You went above and beyond, and I am so very grateful! We are reinstalling our electric fence to keep her in the yard.

Dipper Dan loves libraries! The Lima Public Library wants to give a special thank you to Dipper Dan in Honeoye Falls for donating 25 single scoop cone coupons. We are so grateful for their generosity and their support for literacy. The coupons are part of our prize package. If you registered for our program and completed your game board, stop in and pick up your gift bag! Thankful family The Mairs Family would like to thank the staff of the Livingston County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the excellent care and compassion shown to our Pete during his recent stay. Words cannot express how grateful we are. Also, we appreciate all of the kind words and acts of love from our family, friends, and community. We will miss him.

S T N RA Social Security not doubled Self employed people don’t pay double. They are confusing themselves with their company. They are two different entities. The company pays half, and they pay half. Their company gets all the legal deductions a company gets, and they get a paycheck. They get all the extra perks that come with owning a company: a company car / truck, business trips, etc. If they don’t want to pay, don’t take a paycheck. Simple solution.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children. When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Hiring Daytime

Short Order Cook Apply in person before 2pm or call (585) 797-7682 anytime

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

By JoAnn Derson * Stuck zippers can be loosened with graphite powder, or simply by tracing a pencil lead over the zipper. * “The best way to get a bloodstain out of clothing is by dousing the stain with hydrogen peroxide and washing as usual. For clay stains, you absolutely must have a Fels-Naptha bar. It looks like a bar of soap, and you wet the material and rub in the soap. It’s magical. This, coming from a softball mom whose daughter loves to slide.” -- A.A. in Florida

Excellent Benefits Package available. Email: jobs@shelbytrans.com 4141 Bates Rd • PO Box 191, Medina, NY 14103 RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

* Clear bins make it easy to group like items in your pantry. You can remove the bin, get what you need and replace it, rather than digging through cans and boxes on a shelf and having to straighten it back up when you’re done. * A better use for soda: Use it to scrub your pots and pans. If you have grime and slime, try letting the acids in soda pop work it out for you. Pour enough soda to cover the bottom of the pots or pans and let soak for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub away. * “If you have a retractable cord on your vacuum, try this trick. Clip a clothespin at the optimum length, and the cord will not retract past that point. So, no more snapping right out of the outlet, which used to happen to me.” -- P.L. in Tennessee * Use rubbing alcohol to clean window frames. It evaporates quickly with no residue left behind. HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
