STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne
* In the 1880s, businessman LaMarcus Thompson was so upset over the temptations presented by saloons and brothels that he decided to clean up what he viewed as one of America’s most immoral places—New York’s Coney Island. To that end he built the country’s first roller coaster in a bid to give folks some good, clean fun well away from sleazier pursuits.

Use original containers. It’s tempting to transfer certain cleaning products or chemicals to other bottles or jars for ease of use, but this can be dangerous. People in the home may mistakenly ingest something if it is transferred to a beverage container or something typically used for food storage. Plus, should ingestion occur, you will no longer have the safety label in place. That means you won’t have immediate access to safetyprotocolsthatcansavelives.

Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

Venture off campus. Towns that rely heavily on colleges or universities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local businesses, including bars, restaurants and entertainment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Establish a Routine: Start gradually adjusting your child’s sleep and meal routines a couple of weeks before school starts. is will make the transition smoother and help them get into the school schedule.
Visit the School: If possible, visit the school with your child before the rst day. Familiarize them with the surroundings, classrooms, and playground. is can help reduce anxiety about the new environment.
Organize Supplies: Label and organize your child’s school supplies, backpack, and lunchbox. is will make mornings less hectic and ensure they have everything they need.
Set Up a Homework Zone: Create a designated area at home where your child can comfortably do homework. Make sure it’s quiet, well-lit, and stocked with necessary supplies.
Communicate with Teachers: Attend any back-toschool meetings or orientations. Establish open communication with your child’s teachers, so you’re aware of their progress, assignments, and any concerns.
Morning Prep: Plan ahead for busy mornings. Lay out clothes, pack lunches, and have backpacks ready the night before to reduce morning stress.
Healthy Meals and Snacks: Pack nutritious meals and snacks for your child. A well-balanced diet supports their energy levels and concentration throughout the school day.
Stay Involved: Stay engaged in your child’s education by asking about their day, discussing their activities, and showing interest in what they’re learning. is helps build a strong parent-child connection.
Encourage Reading: Set aside time for reading at home. Reading together can foster a love for learning and improve your child’s literacy skills.
Manage Screen Time: Establish screen time rules and limits to ensure that your child has a healthy balance between schoolwork, physical activity, and recreational activities.

DID YOU KNOW? Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Scan local advertisements: Church bulletins, newspaper classified ads and online bullet boards typically boast a number of items for sale, many of which are being sold at a fraction of the cost of new items. Before embarking on shopping trips, check these advertisements to see if there are any preowned items that meet your needs.
In addition, there are a number of social media groups that enable members to advertise their items for sale. Others are encouraged to inquire about the sales and make their own offers. Though it might take some effort, it is possible to get brand-name used merchandise for less.

KIDS AND SLEEP
School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.
MEDICATIONS MAY CAUSE RISK TO ORAL HEALTH
At your next dental appointment, be sure to disclose any and all medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs. Both prescription and over-the-counter medications can cause oral health issues. Some medications, including illegal drugs, cause a condition called “dry mouth,” which increases the risk of tooth decay.A healthy flow of saliva is essential for reducing bacteria, neutralizing acids, and rebuilding tooth enamel. Common meds that cause dry mouth are antidepressants, diuretics, antihistamines, decongestants, beta blockers, and inhalers. In addition to damaging teeth, these and other medications can damage your gums. Some medications can cause gums to thicken and grow over the teeth; this is called gingival hyperplasia. Such medications include epilepsy and blood pressure meds, cyclosporin, and calciumchannelblockers.
Choose a family dentist who has a sincere interest in his or her patients’ complete health and who is up to date on the latest oral health care issues. If you are looking for just such a dentist, we invite you to call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. At our state-ofthe-art office, all dental problems are dealt with efficiently, effectively, and compassionately. And any medical problems noticed during a dental exam will be discussed with your other health care providers if you so choose. We’re located at 6BataviaCityCentre, where we offer complete gentle, dental careforallmembersof yourfamily.
P.S. Knowledge of the medications you take will help your dentist determine the best course of treatment and the treatments for which you’reeligible.

Patient With Osteoarthritis Develops Hives After Taking Ibuprofen
DEAR DR. ROACH: I took ibuprofen for my osteoarthritis, but developed hives. Does this mean I’m allergic to all NSAIDs? What other therapeutic options do I have? -- J.B.
ANSWER: Anti-inflammatory drugs can have many allergic and allergic-type reactions, and ibuprofen is probably the most likely of all to do so. For people with mild reactions (such as hives that go away) without swelling or shortness of breath, I recommend avoiding ibuprofen and similar medicines, such as naproxen (Aleve and Naprosyn, among others), as well as any other medication ending in “-profen,” such as ketoprofen or flurbiprofen.
Aspirin is safe for most people as far as allergies go, although it is a little more likely to cause side effects at higher doses. The prescription medicines meloxicam (Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen) and celecoxib (Celebrex) are among the least likely to have any cross reaction with ibuprofen. Anti-inflammatory gels like diclofenac cream (Voltaren) should also be safe for topical use.
People with more serious reactions need a referral to an allergist, who may consider desensitization.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: We had to get a router attached to our computer to get Wi-Fi for our house. Is there any health risk by sitting or sleeping near the router from the radio waves it puts out? -- B.R.
ANSWER: The energy output from a typical Wi-Fi router is about 10 watts, and the energy is the lowfrequency, non-ionizing type. Very powerful radio sources, such as AM radio towers, can actually cause injury by heating tissues, but these have a power output in the thousands, or even tens of thousands, of watts. There has never been evidence of health effects on humans by low-output radio waves, such as the waves from Wi-Fi or cellphones.
***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Tailor the reception menu to the weather. A large, heavy meal may not be what guests are hoping for when temperatures are especially hot. In such situations, provide some cool, light fare, such as chilled salads or cold soups, as first courses. Sorbet can be a cool palate cleanser, and grilled meats and vegetables will make for a satisfying, light main course. Ice cream cake may be a decadent option in lieu of more traditional wedding cake. a ROOF REPLACEMENT?

What household products can be used to kill poison ivy leaves or stems or both? What household products would kill tiny ants or box elder bugs but not harm forget me nots or lily of the valley flowers?
Cornell Cooperative Extension’s position on home remedies: “We Do Not
Recommend this practice.”
Use Register Pesticides
Labeled for your intended site/ pest combination and follow all use instructions and safety precautions on the label.
“Always read and follow the label when applying pesticide. The label is the law.” While people who promote making home remedies with familiar household ingredients to control pests are well
intentioned, common claims about home remedies are inaccurate. What about claims that home remedies are safer than store-bought pesticides? Though it might surprise you, home remedies can actually pose MORE risk to you, other
people, and the environment.

* The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

KNIGHT in SHINING ARMOR
Very SPECIAL THANKS to the wonderful man who helped me after I tripped and fell on the uneven sidewalk outside the Canandaigua Post Office on Friday 7/21. Even though I was lucky enough to not be seriously injured, I’m not so sure I could have stood back up on my own. You were so kind to help me up, walk me into the post office and back out to my car, just to be sure I was okay. I wish I had a way to thank you personally, but will have to just hope you read this message thanking you for your kindness.

If you miss your appointment without canceling you get charged. Why then, if you have an appointment and you’re sitting there past the time, sometimes one hour plus, shouldn’t they be charged?
PLZ Return my JOSH!
Gosh darn it! My lawn sign of vaulting Josh Allen was kidnapped last week. A gift from family, he began jumping over my row of multi-colored solar lights during the ‘22-23 Christmas/Football Season. Similar figures exist to buy for yourself, if a fan. And if you’re the opposite, there are multiple methods to promote your own team without resorting to petit larceny. Please return Josh ASAP. The neighborhood misses him. We’d appreciate it, too, if you’d stop discarding your personal trash out your vehicle windows onto our properties. That glass bottle shattered all over my driveway & lawn, plus the road shoulder. It endangered neighborhood pets & children, plus passing sneaker soles & bicycle tires. We’ve got many more important activities to better occupy our time than collecting your daily assortment of cigarette butts & empty packs, fast food garbage, bottles & cans, etc.…
(Come Home, Josh! No ransom demands were issued.)

Add health screenings to back-to-school checklist
An essential requirement parents must find time for is completing their children’s health screenings and immunizations so youngsters can return to school.
Health screenings may include, but may not be limited to, routine physical exams, eye exams and dental cleanings. Each school district may have its own set of health requirements that must be met in order for children to attend school.
Many schools require that children are up-to-date with all immunizations before they can beginanewschoolyear.Whilethe issue of vaccinations has inspired debate in recent years, parents shouldrecognizethatmanyschools will only exempt students from receiving certain vaccinations due toreligiousreasons.
Students who have specific learning disabilities or medical conditions that require classroom modification should obtain recent documentationfromanytherapists or specialists prior to beginning a new school year. Doing so facilitates the process of setting up procedures within the school while ensuring children have what they need to excel in the classroom. All parents may want toaskdoctorstoprovidecopiesof medical and immunization records so that schools will have the most recentcopiesonfile.
Parents should schedule eye examinations well in advance of the first day of school so they have ample time to fill new prescriptions for youngsters before school begins. This ensures kids won’t be starting off on the wrong foot because of visionproblemsthatcouldalready have been addressed.

Here’s a tip
for Grandparents
* Our friends who live in an apartment have a great storable sandbox solution. ey use a plastic under-the-bed storage bin lled with sand and toys. It has a lid and can be stored easily on their balcony. e kids still get to play in the sand even on rainy days. -- W. in Kentucky
* I saw this idea in a magazine somewhere, and now I make them for other moms and dads, as they are cute and functional: Make a cell number beaded bracelet kids can wear when you go out. Little kids may not remember Mommy’s cellphone number, but they can bring the bracelet to a store employee and ask him or her to call the number on the bracelet. Use elastic thread and colorful number beads. -- P.S. in Oregon
* If you use a 1/4-inch hole punch, which you can get at a hardware store for cheap, you easily can make a straw hole in the plastic tops of kids’ single serving drinks, like milk and water bottles. Less chance of a spill. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY
Helps reduce inflammation: Honey is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties. As a result, honey can help treat diabetes, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, and other diseases traced back to widespread inflammation, according to Greek researcher Natalia Vallianou of the Evangelismos Hospital in Athens.
CHECK OUT OUR MOVE-IN SPECIALS!
Don’t overdo it. A cluttered stall at a festival or marketplace may make it difficult for consumers to browse or find what they’re looking for. NFIB® advises business owners to fill the space without it making it appear cluttered. Keep extra inventory on hand to restock displays as sales are made throughout the day.
PAW’S CORNER
Provide Ample Water: Make sure your pets have access to plenty of fresh and cool water at all times. You can even add ice cubes to the water bowl to keep it cooler for longer.
Create Shaded Areas: Set up shaded spots in your yard or on your balcony where your pets can relax. Use umbrellas, canopies, or create natural shaded areas with plants.
Indoor Retreats: Ensure that your pets have a cool place indoors where they can escape the heat. If possible, keep the air conditioning on or use fans to circulate air.
Cooling Mats or Beds: Consider getting cooling mats or beds designed for pets. ese can provide relief from the heat and help regulate their body temperature.
Freeze Treats: Freeze pet-friendly treats like cubes of watermelon, low-sodium chicken broth, or yogurt. ese can be a tasty and cooling snack.
Limit Exercise: Avoid exercising your pets during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for walks and playtime during the cooler mornings or evenings.
Avoid Hot Surfaces: Asphalt and sand can become extremely hot and can burn your pet’s paws. Stick to grassy areas or invest in pet booties to protect their paws.
Pet-Friendly Pools or Sprinklers: If your pet enjoys water, consider setting up a kiddie pool or sprinkler for them to play in. Make sure the water is cool and clean.
Avoid Hot Cars: Never leave your pets in a parked car, even with the windows cracked. Cars can become dangerously hot in a matter of minutes.
Check for Signs of Overheating: Be vigilant for signs of heat stress, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or disorientation. If you notice these signs, bring your pet to a cooler area and contact your veterinarian.
Remember, di erent pets have di erent tolerances for heat. Always consider your pet’s breed, age, and health condition when implementing cooling strategies. If you’re unsure, consult your veterinarian for personalized advice.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES
Serves 6 to 8
2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices
1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey
1/2 cup white wine
Zest of 1 lemon
Juice of 1 lemon
Fresh sage sprigs for garnish
1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.
2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.
3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.
FAMILY CYCLING IS AN
Enjoyable Escape
• Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for themandtheirfamilies, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level.
• Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older
Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy. siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised.
• Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session.
• Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way.
• Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guidesandreadreviewsaswell.
Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING, HOW YOU CAN HELP (NAPSI)—The
global pandemic brought home to many people just how interconnected the world has become. This is true about the need to protect the environment,as well.
According to the National Institutes of Health, the way to preserve human health is by maintaining the environment because polluted air, water and land encourages such sicknesses as asthma and lead poisoning, while global warming fosters the spread of disease.
Fortunately, throughout the country, efforts large and small are helping to resolve this.
What’s Being Done
For example, one major American corporation with a long, proud history of environmental sustainability and a strong track record of action and success has raised the bar on its environmental commitments and accelerated the progress of short- and long-term goals that meet or exceed environmental regulations. As Marc Bitzer, Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation put it. “As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, the healthandsafetyof ouremployeesand communities remain our priority. We strongly believe that our sustainability efforts are as important now as ever. These efforts are guided by a clear mission to earn trust and create demand while in constant pursuit of improving life at home.” To that end, the company has:
• Reduced its absolute plant emissions by 18% by investing in efficiency and renewable energy;
• Achieved zero waste to landfill in eight plants across three regions;
• Accomplished a global waste-torecycling rate of 96%; and
• Developed an innovative solution to reuse water from an existing chiller that saves 31 million gallons of water each year.
What You Can Do
For your part, you can help the environment these four ways:
1.Get your car a tune-up. Properly maintained vehicles get better gas mileage and emit fewer pollutants.
2.Plant a tree. Trees absorb carbon dioxide,a greenhouse gas.
3.Run the dishwasher and clothes washer only when you have full loads.
4.Don’t let the water run while you shave or brush your teeth.

SHOW ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE APPRECIATED
Business owners and bosses and high-level executives may have their names on placards or monogrammed stationery, but the most successful businesses tend to be those in which the entire staff, from the company president to administrative professionals and so on, works together. Administrative professionals, sometimes referred to as “admins,” handle everything from spreadsheet generation to PowerPoint presentations to preparing schedules. Admins are often the unsung heroes of the workplace, and while they may not receive much fanfare, without the continued efforts of admins, businesses may grind to a halt.
In recognition of the roles they play, administrative professionals have been honored during a special week each April for the past 60 years. Called Secretary’s Day upon its inception in 1952, the holiday was later expanded and the name changed to incorporate all of the employees who play pivotal administrative rolls in companies big and small.
Administrative professionals do a lot to keep companies afloat and operating smoothly. Supervisors, managers and other higher-ups can take every opportunity to show their appreciation to these hard, yet often unsung, workers.
