BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

You might not know that these same pads can reduce scuff marks that appliances make on countertops. It also makes it easier to scoot around a heavy mixer or other appliances.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
We’ve Gotten Careless If you read the news, you know there are serious questions about how well the vaccines we’re been taking actually protect against COVID. Especially worrisome is the protection they offer against the Delta variant that’s sweeping the world. Those in authority seem to be flipping a coin each day, depending on who you listen to. Some days we can throw caution to the wind and go about our business, and other days we need to continue to beware. There’s talk of going back to the indoor mask mandates, and that’s likely one step away from again limiting the number of people allowed in stores at one time, or so I imagine. If those things happen, it won’t be like it was in March 2020. Back then we were all scared to death. We’d spread out in the grocery aisles, staying far away from other people. We wore that mask at all times when out and about, and we respected all those 6-foot markers on the floor. We certainly didn’t sit down at a restaurant table for four and take off our masks, or head to the gym. Now, having lived through that whole horrible year, people are tired of it all, and we’re eager for a normal life. We think that because so many people have had the vaccination, that surely we’ll be safe. I fear that this time, however, if the mask mandates come again, it will be even more dangerous than it was last year, because we’ve gotten too casual, careless and passive about our safety. My short to-do list involves buying new masks and more hand sanitizer, renewing my grocery curbside pickup account ... and saying no to an invitation to join a dance group. How about you? Are you ready for what’s likely coming? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

S E V RA Many thanks! Many thanks to all the bands (Deja VooDoo, Generations, don Newcomb, Blue Sky, and 8 Days a Week) and all the folks who came out to support our Summer Gazebo Music Concert Series the past five weeks. Additional thanks to all the campers and their parents for participating in Riga Recreation’s very successful Summer Camp program after a year’s absence. The Churchville-Chili School District and our camp staff are to be commended for making this transition seamless and providing our youngsters with a fun and exciting experience. - David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor Wadsworth Library pantry painter kudos! To the artist who was painting the Food Cabinet outside of the Wadsworth Library - thank you so much for being so sweet to my kids and including them in the process! They stopped to ask you questions and view your work on the way in and out of the library. You encouraged and painted their ideas, were so patient with them, and still completed your beautiful work! You made their day and left a lasting impression!

Amazing Staff at Batavia’s Perry Pet I am overdue in thanking the amazing staff at Perry Pet in Batavia. We went through an incredibly difficult time this past April when we had to say goodbye to our sweet girl. Our dog was almost 17 years old and a huge part of our family. The staff at Perry Pet were kind, helpful, considerate, and so supportive during this time. Because of their kindness, we were able to have our whole family together one last time. I can’t tell you how much this meant to us. We cannot thank you enough for helping us through one of the most difficult times our family has gone through and for treating our girl with grace and dignity. The beautiful card and the touching memento that were sent to us afterwards were such an amazing surprise. Now we have her paw prints framed and a touching reminder of our sweet girl. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Credit where it’s due I’d like to thank Alexander Central School, its administrators, teachers, and the school board at the time for getting me involved at a young and impressionable age. I learned a lot.

Mind your own business To the person who put a face mask on, entered the fitness room, and tried to belittle me and make fun of the fact that I wear a mask.(You never wear a mask.) I am vaccinated, but I still wear one to protect myself and others, unike you. Then, you ask me what I’m doing on the treadmill and tell me that I should be outside walking. You then replied that you walk 4 miles a day outside. So what? Who are you to judge me? Who are you to know why I have to use a treadmill? I guess you don’t know I have titanium in three different parts of my body (rods, plates and cadaver bone). I’ve had two surgeries on my spine and a botched foot surgery. Stay in your lane, buddy, and mind your own business! A sad week for our country! After 20 years our time in Afghanistan has ended. After great cost in terms of human life and money spent the people that supported us there have been left in many cases high and dry. It might have always ended like this but it’s still a shame that things came to a close the way they did. Nonetheless thanks to all the vets that served there overseas. To those who are unvaccinated. In case you haven’t heard, hospitals are overrun with Covid patients, children are struggling to breathe (they don’t have the choice to get vaccinated) and thousands of people are dying. All because you “know your rights” and want the government to butt out. How many of you refused your stimulus check? Your unemployment? Your Social Security? It’s time to start thinking about someone other than yourself. It’s not too late to do the responsible thing and get vaccinated.

Caledonia Community Embraces New Little Pantry BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
new resource has come to Caledonia next to the Angry Rooster Deli on State Street. This resource, a Community Pantry filled with food and toiletries, was set up a little over a month ago by Helen Serafine, owner of the Angry Rooster. She says, however, that it‚ is really the Caledonia community that inspired it and makes it work. “Customers who had seen these little pantries in other towns and Rochester neighborhoods would come in, and they told me about them,” said Helen. “I knew there was a need, and these customers put a bug in my ear!” Helen decided to take action. She ordered a large outdoor cupboard for the Community Pantry and shared her plans with the community. Even so, she was unprepared for the enthusiasm with which her Caledonia neighbors Kathryn Mailloux (l) and Helen Serafine (r) embraced the idea. stand next to Caledonia’s new 24/7 “I posted that the Community Pantry! pantry had arrived, and it had only been up about an hour when Bill Weiss came over, installed its shelf, and secured it to the building,” Helen shared. “It was full then, and it has been full ever since it opened.” The Community Pantry’s constantly full state is another evidence of community generosity, according to Helen. “They have rallied around it 100%,” she says. “It refills every day. There are people in this town who are incredible and would do anything for others. Almost daily, I see people park out front and go to the pantry with bags of donations.” One supporter Sometimes you forget found her own unique the needs because they way to support the cause. “One friend loves aren’t so visible. indoor plants,” recalls - Helen Serafine Helen. “So, she takes tiny succulents and replants them in small pots. She brings up to 50 of them in at a time and asks people to take one and donate to the pantry!” While Helen is thrilled by the Community Pantry, she is surprised at how busy it has been. “I cannot believe the degree of need,” she says. “We are seeing items go like toiletries and even baby food, which breaks my heart. Sometimes you forget the needs because they aren’t so visible.” The Community Pantry is open 24/7, something Helen said she learned from the coat tree giveaway she did last year. “We covered a tree out front in coats so that anyone who needed one could just take one,” she explains. “When we came back each morning, several would be gone, so we realized people were coming when we weren’t here. We want people to be able to do that with the Community Pantry, too.” And it’s working. The Community Pantry is the talk of the town, a

wellspring of generosity and gratitude. “One woman shared with me that she was able to have Progresso soup from the Community Pantry and that she was never able to afford that soup,” shares Helen. “Our community is unbelievably generous.” Those wishing to donate to the Community Pantry can donate non-perishable items any time. Fresh vegetables and eggs may be donated on Saturdays. “If the pantry is full, people can leave items here at the deli or next to the pantry, and we will restock it,” says Helen. “We check it every morning.” As for why she hosts the Community Pantry, Helen thinks of her family. “I’m reminded of when I was raising my two boys, and there were times we would struggle,” she says. “If one of my boys were in need today, I hope someone would help them, too.” Helen invites anyone in need to visit the Community Pantry at its discreet, off street location. “Stop by! There are bags in the bottom, or you can bring your own, and take whatever is needed. We just ask that you keep in mind that there is always someone in need behind you. That is all; just think of the person behind you.” Helen plans to continue the Thanks to community generosity, Community Pantry Community Pantry shelves stay full! into the foreseeable future. This winter, she also hopes to bring back the giving tree of winter coats and the giving bench with winter hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves. “Last year, the crabapple tree was hung with coats of every kind for every age. It was very colorful and looked really neat. We gave away over 150 coats!” she exclaims. “We also had a woman in town make and donate all of the mittens, scarves, and hats. We hope to give those items again also.”

Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our dog “Boadicea” is a sweetheart, but when she wants a treat she turns into a little monster. She drools on my arm, chews on my roommate’s shoe (with his foot in it), barks loudly, yips ... whatever it takes. We eventually break down and give her a treat. This happens several times a day. How can we stop this behavior? -- Darren in Manchester, New Hampshire
View all of our Body & Mind ads online at gvpennysaver.com
DEAR DARREN: There are two steps I’d recommend to curb this behavior, because you know the downside of Boadicea’s begging: spiraling behavioral problems, future digestive issues and potential obesity. First, reinforce her basic obedience training. Work with her at least once a day on the “sit,” “stay,” “lie down,” “leave it” and “come here” commands. I recommend not working with her during the time that you’re normally relaxing in the living room with your roommate, because you want to try to reinforce that certain places and times are for training, play or treats. Obedience training alone won’t resolve the problem, though, because she’s developed a habit of begging whenever you’re trying to relax or socialize. So, you’ll need to employ the “ignore and divert” strategy as well. Ignore her attention-seeking behavior for a specific amount of time ... say, five minutes. Next, command her to either sit or lie down, and give her a chew toy. When she inevitably gets up to beg again, repeat the process. Don’t give her a treat at all. This will take time, but eventually she will get it. Many dog owners add a structured treat time to the day. For example, after your dinner and dishes are done, she can have her treat. This will help reinforce when and where she gets treats, and how she is supposed to behave. Send your tips, questions and comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
COSMETIC DENTISTRY LEADING THE INDUSTRY IN GROWTH Cosmetic dentistry is the fastest growing niche in the dental industry. With today’s state-of-the-art technology, such as 3D printing and innovations in veneers, more patients than ever are investing in their smiles. Contributing factors to this recent trend include younger people getting enhancing implants, accessibility of quick and easy whitening procedures, highly durable porcelain veneers, high-tech ceramic restoration materials, and smilechanging gum contouring. Dentists employing digital dental software and 3D printing can now provide patients with realistic and tangible visuals of anticipated results, making it possible to see the dramatic difference these procedures can achieve. Many dental practices are now offering flexible financing options to make cosmetic treatment plans, often not covered by insurance, a more feasible and affordable investment.
When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you wish you liked your smile more? If so, why not make a change for the better? Teeth can be whitened, reshaped, replaced, veneered, or bonded, and their appearance improved by several methods of today’s cosmetic dentistry. In fact, it is truly amazing what can be accomplished in a short time that can enhance your appearance for the rest of your life. Comprehensive, quality, gentle dental care for patients of all ages is available here at 6 Batavia City Centre. And new patients are always welcome – call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll give you a reason to smile!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Non-Stop Acid Reflux? Look at Surgical Options ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 78-year-old female who has suffered from acid reflux for many years and has been taking Prilosec (omeprazole) for at least 15 years. I have heard that it is not meant for longtime use. If I don’t take it, I have such heartburn I can’t sleep and am in misery all day and night. I recently attended a seminar on the new LINX surgery and hope to have it done. Do you have any information on the success of or problems after this surgery? -- J.B. ANSWER: The LINX device is a magnetic ring, placed by laparoscopic surgery, that helps increase the strength of the lower esophageal sphincter, the valvelike muscular structure at the junction of the esophagus and the stomach. This reduces reflux (backward movement) of stomach acid up into the esophagus. The procedure was very effective at reducing both heartburn symptoms (89% before procedure to 12% after) and the need for daily medicines like omeprazole (100% before to 15% after). The device has not been in use for a very long time, so long-term safety data is unavailable. Some people had to have the devices removed because they eroded into the esophagus, but only 0.3% of devices were removed at four years. There are other types of surgeries used to treat reflux, most of which are effective at reducing both symptoms and the need for medication. There are now options for treatment being done endoscopically (with an instrument placed through the mouth), without the need even for laparoscopic surgery (with the instrument being placed by small incisions through the skin). My personal practice is to discuss medication treatments as well as surgical treatments for people with moderate to severe acid reflux. Surgery in younger people may have more benefit by preventing a lifetime of daily medication. People who do not get relief with medication are those who most clearly benefit from these kinds of procedures. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 35

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
