DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES

Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

What to do when your pet won’t housetrain

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a 9-month-old puppy a few weeks ago and named him “Chestnut.” He’s wonderful, but has one problem. He is still not housetrained. I think part of it is from the shelter, where the dogs routinely poop in their cages and rarely are taken outside. Plus, he was rescued from a pet hoarding situation. How can I resolve his housetraining issues? -- Glenda in Dothan, Alabama

DEAR GLENDA: Congratulations on your new family member! I know the housetraining situation is frustrating, but have patience.

If you haven’t taken Chestnut to the veterinarian yet for his first checkup, schedule that appointment. e vet will rule out any physical problems or hidden illnesses that might be contributing to the problem, and can give some helpful advice on working with dogs from a traumatic background. at background does have an effect on housetraining. Chestnut spent formative months in locations where little to no training took place, and he learned to follow the habits of the other dogs around him. So, you’ll have to retrain him away from those habits, and keep the entire experience a positive one.

Take Chestnut for walks two to three times per day, and (this is important) at the same times each day. He needs to know that at sunrise, noon and sunset, he will have “outside” time. Bring his favorite treats with you. At first, shower him with treats for everything: putting on the leash, walking next to you, sitting on command, and every time he poops or pees. Make him look forward to pooping outside.

Never scold him if he poops inside. Just clean up and try again. If he poops in specific areas of the house, block his access to those areas if possible. Keep training positive and be patient, patient, patient. He will come around.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.

Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.

Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

Embrace strategic landscaping. The landscaping outside of a home can contribute to cooler climates inside the home. Deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, and when planted on the western and southern sides of a home, these trees can block the sun from entering the home during the hottest times of day, reducing the need to lower the thermostat on air conditioners. Of course, when these trees shed their leaves in late fall, sunlight can then make its way into the home, potentially reducing heating costs.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER

Garden during the cooler parts of the day. Lawncare professionals advise against watering lawns between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the summertime, as water is more likely to evaporate during this time, which tends to be the hottest time of the day. Gardeners should avoid working in their gardens during these hours as well. Garden in the early morning hours when the sun is not burning as hot or in late afternoon or early evening hours when temperatures are less threatening.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, people with a parent or sibling with Alzheimer’s disease are morelikelytodevelopthediseasethan those who do not have a first-degree relative with Alzheimer’s. In addition, those who have more than one firstdegree relative with Alzheimer’s are at an even greater risk of getting Alzheimer’s. Though family history is not necessary for an individual to develop Alzheimer’s, the AA notes that researchers have identified hereditary Alzheimer’s genes. For example, researchers estimate that between 40 and 65 percent of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s have the APOE-e4 gene. APOE-e4 is characterized as a risk gene because it increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s but does not guarantee it will happen. The gene is inherited from a parent, and people who inherit two copies of APOE-e4 from their mother and father have a higher risk for Alzheimer’s than those who inherit one copy of the gene from their mother or father. The AA also notes that researchers have found deterministic genes that cause Alzheimer’s. However, these genes are rare and have only been found in a few hundred families across the globe, accounting for 1 percent or less of all Alzheimer’s cases.

DID YOU KNOW? The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 20, 1968. The games were the brainchild of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who first proposed the idea of nationwide sports contests for young people with intellectual disabilities in November of 1966. Kennedy Shriver had spent years advocating for young people with intellectual disabilities, even opening a summer camp for such youngsters at her home in suburban Washington, D.C. in June of 1962. More than 200 events were offered at the first Special Olympics, including water polo, the 100-yard swim, the 50-yard dash, the broad jump, and the high jump.

Here’s A Tip

* e best way to cook leafy, green veggies such as spinach and kale, is to stir fry them in just the water le over from rinsing. It works very well to steam them, and adds no fat!

* Keep track of capacity and dimension of your cookware by using a permanent marker to notate the specifications on the bottoms of each baking container you have. is way, when a recipe calls for a 13-by-9 baking dish or a 2-quart casserole dish, you can easily tell which one you need. is is especially important if you don’t spend a lot of time cooking.

* “When you need to crush nuts or a cracker for crumbs, you can use a small can of soup to crush these in a plastic bag. is is for when you don’t have a rolling pin.” -- J.R. in Virginia

ATM Fees local hometown bank

A Big Thank You

The Humane Society of Livingston County would like to thank the Tom Moran Memorial Golf Tournament for choosing us as one recipient of the proceeds from this event. These much needed funds will go towards the care of the cats we take in from our county.

Thank You!

A grateful thank you to the young man from Henrietta who was visiting friends in Caledonia and was at the veggie stand on South Road as we pulled in at the same time. I just wanted 3 ears of corn and did not have exact change, and I was trying to figure out a way of getting change. He was very kind and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll pay for them” and proceeded to tell me “They have the best corn [he’s] had” and I must agree! It was delicious! Thank you for being so sweet and paying for my corn.

On Sunday we tried to get money out of our local hometown bank only to find that BOTH the outside and inside ATMs were out of use. Because of this we had to use another bank’s ATM and were charged a $3.75 fee. Now wouldn’t you think that our bank would refund that fee? Wrong! They said no we don’t refund those fees. All our money in this one bank and we can’t access it unless we go elsewhere. This is terrible customer service, and we definitely will not be doing any further loans or business with this bank. I’m sure if I asked a loan officer at this bank, they would refund it, but the tellers won’t. That’s enough for us.

Life on the Lawless [Local Waterway]

Like many local taxpayers, I used to enjoy scenic walks along the public pathways of our [local waterway]. But, this historic landmark has been desecrated in recent years, becoming a racing track for speed boats that soak unsuspecting pedestrians with their massive wakes that splash onto the walkways. I cannot even push my child in a stroller without her being nearly rundown by unlicensed ATVs and dirt-bikes.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

BONE GRAFTING TO SUPPORT THE JAW

Bone loss in the jaw is common, especially as we age. Jawbone grafting increases bone density and volume so dental implants can be added, or when bone loss is compromising one or more teeth. Jawbone grafting may also be recommended to support an extraction or dentures and to replace bone loss from gum disease. The tissue used for the graft can be taken from your own body or purchased from a human or animal tissue bank. Synthetic material can be used in some cases. Once the bone graft is placed, it provides a base for your own bone tissue to grow and regenerate. Healing can take three to nine months, depending on initial bone density and the type of graft.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our continuing education and experience ensures we remain on the forefront of

dentistry, keeping up-to-date on the latest dental techniques, materials, therapies, and health studies to ensure all our patients receive the very best in oral health care. If you are looking for a family dentist who understands the needs of everyone in your family as individuals and patients, we welcome you to stop by 6 Batavia City Centre and get acquainted. We’re sure you’ll leave with a good feeling about our practice. For an appointment, please call 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.

P.S. After a jawbone graft, your dentist will monitor your healing and decide when any additional procedures like adding implants can take place.

DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN

Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it’s well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to one’s health. That’s why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside.

Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn’t risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won’t think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Depending on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time spent outside, sunburn can be a first- or second-degree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain.

Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun. Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It’s also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Vomiting and Difficulty Eating Could Signify Gastroparesis

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 71-year-old healthy, active woman. I normally work out six days a week and used to be in very good shape. I’m having stomach issues, which caused me to lose 20 pounds since the end of last year. I was thin to begin with and have lost a significant amount of muscle and most of my body fat. I was diagnosed with gastric intestinal metaplasia in 2019 and had trouble eating, but I didn’t lose any significant weight at that time. No treatment was recommended beyond a suggested follow-up in a year or two.

I have difficulty eating anything but a small amount of food, and if I do “overeat,” I vomit. Eating is beyond a chore, and I continue to lose weight. I have been worked up with no conclusions in sight. I had a colonoscopy two years ago that was normal. I had an abdominal CT scan with and without contrast, an endoscopy, an MR enterography, and a brain scan this year, with no results that explained my problem.

I am seeing another GI doctor soon, but I’m not particularly hopeful. I am 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and now weigh 129 pounds. I am feeling desperate. Do you have any ideas? -- L.W.

ANSWER: Weight loss can have many different causes, and it seems like your doctors have carefully looked for many of the concerning ones. Key features of your story are that you are vomiting and losing weight.

Intestinal metaplasia is when the lining of the stomach develops a microscopic appearance, similar to the intestines. This can predispose people to stomach cancer, but intestinal metaplasia can also be associated with low acid in the stomach.

Vomiting after eating normal amounts of food is a concern for a stomach mass, but between the endoscopy and the CT scan, it should have shown up. I would be concerned about gastroparesis, where the stomach doesn’t squeeze properly. Vomiting after eating is a hallmark symptom, as is feeling very full after a little food. A gastric emptying study can confirm the diagnosis.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

DID YOU KNOW? Statistics from the United States Coast Guard indicate that, in 2019, 86 percent of drowning victims in recreational boating accidents where cause of death was known were not wearing life jackets. The National Park Service reports that drowning is the top cause of visitor deaths in national parks and that nearly all of those deaths are preventable. One of the simplest ways to prevent drowning is to follow the advice of the NPS and wear a life jacket at all times when near or in the water. This includes when wading, swimming, fishing, boating, and engaging in watersports or other water-related activities. The NPS notes that there are three types of life jackets, but only two come in child and infant sizes. Inherently buoyant (primarily foam) life jackets and hybrid (foam and inflation) life jackets are available in child and infant sizes. The NPS recommends both types of life jackets for swimmers and non-swimmers. People who intend to engage in water sports should know that some hybrid life jackets are designed specifically for such activities. The third type of life jacket is inflatable life jackets, which are only available in adult sizes and should never be worn by poor or non-swimmers.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES

Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* It’s illegal to kill Bigfoot in British Columbia. That is, if you ever actually run across him.

* The earliest toothpaste was made in ancient Egypt from crushed pepper, rock salt and dried flowers. No, it wasn’t particularly effective.

* Speaking of toothpaste, that blob on your toothbrush is called a nurdle.

* Chimpanzees can identify each other from pictures of their butts.

Level: Intermediate

The word “condiment” comes from the Latin word “condimentum”, meaning spice, seasoning or sauce, and “condire”, which means to preserve, pickle or season. Although the word was first used to describe pickling fluid and seasoning in the mid-1400s, it has come to include a wide range of different products in modern times.

Why are condiments such a common feature on dining tables? Condiments are known to be a typical compliment to food because of their ability to personalize and add taste or flavor to different dishes as desired. Condiments also offer a whole sensory experience through smell, sight, sound, and touch, making dishes much more attractive.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN SUPPORT THEIR LOCAL LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES

Take a stand against discrimination. Discrimination has no place in modern society. Local business owners can offer their employees extensive anti-discrimination training so they recognize how their own behaviors and the behavior of others might be interpreted by people from different backgrounds. Periodically revisit training, even with longtime employees, to ensure staff and customers all feel welcome and safe.

(Family Features) Families are always looking for ways to enjoy vacation time together that maximizes fun, while minimizing the budget. To help your family reduce costs on summer travel: Prepare the car. Purchases from your local grocery store are cheaper than convenience stores and fast food restaurants en route, so save time and money by pre-buying snacks and drinks. Take advantage of the time together by talking, singing and laughing. Make the journey as fun as the final destination.

Sandy Whiting: A Journey from Words to Worlds

Sandy Whiting is a name that resonates with creativity, passion, and a deep commitment to both her profession and her cra . A full-time Speech-Language Pathologist in the LeRoy Central School District, Sandy’s journey from her hometown roots to an award-winning author is inspiring. Born and raised in LeRoy, Sandy seamlessly weaves together her roles as an educator, writer, and mother.

Sandy’s love for words began early, sparked by her favorite childhood book, e Random House Book of Poetry, selected poems by Jack Prelutsky. She fondly recalls carrying around a black and white composition notebook, where she would pen her own little poems. She says, “I have loved writing poetry, and writing in general, ever since.” is early fascination with poetry laid the foundation for her lifelong passion for writing. Today, Sandy channels that same enthusiasm into her work, whether it’s guiding students in speech therapy, leading a creative writing club for third to sixth graders at her local library, or cra ing her own stories.

storytelling. She explains that whenever she feels blocked or finds writing becoming more like a “chore,” she takes a break and revisits the project later.

Her inspiration to write comes primarily from her family and life experiences. In fact, her first chapter book, Meatball Man Head Detective: Case of the Missing Pepper Shaker, was born out of a family dinner of spaghetti and meatballs. e book, published by Monarch Educational Services’ Caterpillar Imprint in June 2024, quickly garnered attention, earning the Literary Titan Gold Book Award as well as an endorsement from New York Times bestselling author Adam Wallace.

Sandy’s upcoming young adult novel, Flight: A Novel in Verse, set for release in November 2024, marks her continued journey in the literary world, where she delves into more complex themes through verse, which she considers “more poetic.”

Whenaskedaboutherwritingprocess,Sandyemphasizesthe importance of staying true to herself and ensuring that writing remains a source of joy. She acknowledges that there are times when the words flow effortlessly, as was the case with Meatball Man and Flight, but she also recognizes the value of structure, especially for longer projects. Her current works involve a more methodical approach, utilizing outlines and notes to guide her

Sandy’s writing o en gravitates toward first-person narratives, a choice that allows her to create intimate connections with her readers, she says. is connection is something she cherishes, particularly when interacting with young writers in her creative writing club.

Hermessagetoaspiringwritersisclear:“Youcandoanything you set your minds to. Kids and books have the power to change the world. Keep writing, keep reading, keep creating, and have fun! Experiment with different writing styles, and never give up on your dreams.”

In her life and work, Sandy is a testament to the power of perseverance and creativity. Her goals extend beyond just writing books; she aspires to leave a lasting impact on her readers and to be remembered as someone who lived her dream and encouraged others to do the same.

Sandy, a certified yoga instructor and married mother of two young children beyond her speech pathologist day job, balances her professional career, her writing, and her family life and remains grounded in the belief that creativity is a lifelong journey. For Sandy, the joy of writing is not just in the creation of stories, but in the ability to inspire others to dream big and to pursue their own passions with the same fervor.

(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows.

The Problem

• General Production: $19/hour

• Maintenance Technician (10-hour Evening & Overnight): $25.50-$35.50/hour

• Maintenance Supervisor: $81,760 to $114,464

• Human Resources Manager - $81,800 to $114,500

• Operations Supervisor (Evening & Overnight): $64,000 - $87,000

The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone.

An Answer

Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years.

“Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,”explainedDarrellSmith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association.
