Mr. & Mrs. Jared Collins and children. Thank you so much for your generosity and paying for our meal at the Olive Garden a few weeks ago. Your kind words and prayers for our brother William Coffey will never be forgotten. Patty, Julie & Joanne

On Wednesday afternoon, August 21, I dropped a portfolio of legal papers in Routes 5 & 20 between Parrish St Ext and Route 21 in Canandaigua. By the time I realized what happened, papers were strewn about on both shoulders of this busy highway. While picking up papers from one side of the road, I noticed a woman had stopped on the opposite side to get the papers which had blown there. In my state of panic, I didn’t think to ask for her name, but she definitely saved the day for me and restored my faith in the kindness of others.

Our six-month-old great granddaughter’s bunny rabbit was inadvertently left at Egypt Park a couple of weeks ago. When Great Grandpa returned later that night, the bunny rabbit was sitting and waiting on one of the picnic tables. Thank you to whoever rescued him. You saved the day (and night). Thank you, thank you!

Many thanks to the kind person who took my lost handicap parking card to the Brighton Town Hall. God Bless. M.G.

The [local transportation] service has gotten so bad this summer that I must call them first to ask if a bus is running that day. The excuse is always the same: “not enough drivers.” This is clearly a management problem, and in all my working life, any business manager who used this excuse over an extended period of time would be looking for another job.

I was at Exit 9 Dunkin Donuts drive thru on September 5th in the morning. When I got to the window, they said the person in front of me paid for me. That was a Livingston County Sheriff. Then I was there on September the 9th, the same thing happened. This time, it was someone from a local trucking company: Mat Trucking. Thank you to both! I mistakenly left $120.00 at the ESL drive up ATM in Brockport. The next person in line took the money in the bank and then deposited it into my account. Thank you, ATM Angel!

Bicyclists in [local town] seem to think stop signs and red lights don’t apply to them. They ride in the middle of the street, against traffic in the oncoming lane, and swerve back and forth or side to side. This makes it difficult for car drivers at an intersection to see you if you’re riding in the wrong lane or if switching puts you at an angle in my A-pillar blind spot. Stop being foolish. It is dangerous.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

I was adopted 6 years ago when I was a little over a year old by my Mom, Marlene. I am over 6ft long. I love to swim, soak in the sunshine, and hang out with my buddy Matt. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

Byron Online Only Real Estate Auction 6906 Ivison Road, Byron, New York Open House: Thursday 9/19 at 11am & Tuesday 9/24 at 11am or by appointment Bidding closes Thursday, September 26th at Noon Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

OFFERING: 1636 square foot home on 1.4 acre! Property features 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a two car attached garage with blacktop driveway. Screened in porch plus deck and aboveground pool. Outbuilding with walk in area. Includes all appliances! Very well-maintained and move-in ready! See our website, www.williamkentinc.com, for complete terms and more information!

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS

AWNINGS & WINDOW COVERINGS

Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES

Professional Installation Available. Financing available to qualified applicants.

(NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.

TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Crowbar or prybar: Before you can put in new construction, you might have to get your hands dirty with some demolition. Crowbars or prybars can be used to pry up wood slats, remove nails or remove old decking.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY Community Action of Orleans & Genesee is offering…

Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money. How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.

FREE HOME ENERGY IMPROVEMENTS The Weatherization Assistance Program is available for income eligible homeowners in Genesee County. Reduce energy costs & improve the safety of your home throug energy efficiency measures.

You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also:

HEAP Recipients are automatically eligible. Income guidelines are: Household size of 1: $2,391/month Household size of 2: $3,127/month Household size of 3: $3,863/month Household size of 4: $4,598/month

• Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Switch to LED light bulbs. Some LED light bulbs have a lifespan of up to 10 years, and are 80 to 90 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs. They are generally more environmentally friendly than CFLs and safer, too, since they produce less heat. The return on investment is excellent, as LED bulbs often pay for themselves through energy savings within the first year.

STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE AN APPRAISER’S VISIT Make any necessary repairs ahead of the appointment. Homeowners who have been putting off repairs should make them before the appraiser arrives. Homes with repairs that still need to be made will likely be valued less than similar homes with no such repair issues. Though repairs can be costly, investing in home repairs will likely increase both the appraisal and resale value of the home.

REDUCE DISTRACTIONS BEHIND THE WHEEL

AUTO SECTION

Secure children and pets accordingly. Both should wear harnesses and not be given free reign to roam around the car. STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

DID YOU KNOW? REAL ESTATE SECTION

Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An offer to help with a stalled project should reassure you that you have a workable plan in spite of the problems in getting it up and running. The week’s end brings more positive news. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A past problem about a workplace situation re-emerges early in the week. Talking things out helps ease tensions by midweek, but some hurt feelings could linger a few more days. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Optimistic aspects dominate your efforts. However, expect to confront some criticism, some of which might be valid, so keep an open mind. But overall, it’s your views that will count. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Social interaction with new people, especially on the job, could be a bit strained in the early part of the week. But the awkwardness passes as you get to know each other better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Expect news about a follow-up to a workplace change that could make a difference in your career path. Meanwhile, new friends widen the circle for all you Social Lions who love to party. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Enjoy your well-earned plaudits for a job well done. But be aware that some people might not share your colleagues’ admiration, and you might have to work harder to win them over. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good week to recheck your probably already overlong “to do” list and decide what to keep and what to discard. Lose the clutter and focus your energy on what’s really important. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to take a new perspective on what you’ve been offered. Expanding your view could help to uncover any plusses or minuses that weren’t apparent at first. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Applying the usual methods to this week’s unique challenges might not work too well. Instead, use your creativity to find a way to resolve any impasse that develops. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) So what if fate throws some obstacles in your path this week? Just keep in mind that the sure-footed and resolute Goat can get past any barrier by focusing on the goals up ahead. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This week calls for better communication with people in both your private life and the workplace. Start by asking questions, and then pay close attention to the answers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Potentially beneficial workplace changes could be closer than you realize. Make sure you know what’s going on so that you’re not left high and dry when the good things happen. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re not timid about pushing to have your aims realized once you’ve set your mind to accomplishing your goals. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Heart Attack Symptoms Not Always Painful ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My very healthy husband collapsed and died on the way to the hospital. They worked on him for a long time but could not revive him. They didn’t do an autopsy, and they declared his death as “atherosclerotic vascular disease.” He was 79 years old and had no health problems. He came into the house and said that something was in his throat and he couldn’t swallow. He tried to cough it up, but nothing came up. He then collapsed. He had no pain. I am still puzzled by that symptom of a heart attack. Have you ever heard of that? I am really curious and still in shock. I hope you can explain. -- T.S. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. I think he likely did have a heart attack, which is the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. Although many people have symptoms of heart disease that they ignore, some people have no symptoms until sudden death. Atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries due to cholesterol plaque and calcium in the blood vessels of the heart, almost always is present in people with a heart attack. The initial symptom of a heart attack varies widely. Throat discomfort is not rare. Cough is a common symptom, as the heart becomes damaged and the pressure in the lungs increases. The classic symptom of chest pain certainly does happen, but there are many variations. Both men and women can have atypical presentations. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Parkinson’s disease. He also has a stent in his heart. We have been to many doctors to address a breathing problem: fast breathing. He experiences this daily, and we are told that it is anxiety. It is difficult to watch him go through this. It sometimes happens before he is due for his Sinemet, but other times right after taking it. He has been prescribed Xanax, clonidine, cannabidiol-infused gummies and a few others. One doctor says it is from Parkinson’s, but the rest say it is anxiety. -- E.W. ANSWER: Shortness of breath can have many causes, but someone with Parkinson’s disease has an unusual possibility, called “respiratory dyskinesia” (which just means “abnormal movement of the muscles of breathing”). This is an involuntary rapid breathing that causes distress, and it usually happens an hour after taking a medication like Sinemet. Changing the dose can help with diagnosis, and working with a neurologist to adjust the dose of the Sinemet (which comes in fast-acting and slowrelease formulations) can solve the problem. I would start with an expert on Parkinson’s. Keeping a diary of when he takes his medication and when the breathing trouble starts and stops will be helpful, as would a video of what it looks like when happening. Having Parkinson’s doesn’t make someone less likely to have other causes of shortness of breath, and anyone with a stent in the heart (meaning a history of blockages of at least one heart artery) is at risk of developing further blockages. Poor blood flow to the heart is another potential cause. Get the Parkinson’s evaluation first. I would not recommend anti-anxiety medications unless there is clear evidence of benefit. Ascribing a physical symptom like shortness of breath to anxiety without a thorough workup is unwise.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.

JOINT CONCERN One type of pain that dental patients find most concerning involves the ìtemporomandibular joints,î which act as hinges between the temporal bone of the skull and the lower jaw (mandible). Among the most complex joints in the body, these joints not only hinge open and closed, but they also slide forward and backward, allowing us to chew, talk, and yawn. When problems, called ìtemporomandibular dysfunctionî (TMD), arise in these joints or their surrounding muscles and ligaments, radiating pain and limited jaw movement often result. The dentist can diagnose and treat jaw pain and TMD that are caused by missing teeth; jaw clenching; tooth grinding (bruxism); poor bite (malocclusion); or bad habits (nail biting, pencil chewing, etc.).

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 25, 1970, ABC premieres “The Partridge Family,” which would become a smash hit. The group’s songs were not actually recorded by the five siblings and their mom in a garage, but were mostly the work professional musicians in Los Angeles. * On Sept. 26, 1957, “West Side Story,” composed by Leonard Bernstein, opens on Broadway. The show went on to an impressive maiden run of 732 performances. In 1961, a film version was an enormous hit and took home 10 Academy Awards. * On Sept. 28, 1066, claiming his right to the English throne, William, duke of Normandy, invades England. Questions older drivers can ask themselves to see if it’s still safe to drive Men and women know that adjustments must be made as they get older. Athletes nearing their golden years may not be able to push themselves as hard at the gym as they once did. Professionals nearing retirement age might not be able to pull long hours at the office like they used to. But aging affects more than just work and play. As men and women age, their ability to perform everyday tasks, including driving, may diminish as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, as people age, certain changes they experience can affect their ability to safely operate an automobile. Changes in eyesight, physical fitness and reflexes may require aging drivers to reassess their skills behind the wheel. The NHTSA notes that drivers can ask themselves the following questions as they try to assess their driving abilities. How is my eyesight? The American Optometric Association notes that vision changes naturally occur as a person ages. Such changes do not necessarily mean drivers have to give up the keys to their vehicles. In fact, they may just require more routine eye examinations. The NHTSA says having trouble reading signs easily, recognizing someone from across the street, seeing streets signs and pedestrians, and handling headlight glare are common signs of age-related eye problems. Can I control my vehicle? Age-related loss of strength, coordination and flexibility can make it hard for aging men and women to control their vehicles. Some signs that drivers might be having trouble controlling their vehicles include trouble looking over shoulders to change lanes, difficulty moving foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal and difficulty turning the steering wheel. Pain in the knees, legs or ankles also can make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles. Does driving make me nervous, scared or overwhelmed? Drivers who feel confused by traffic signs and traffic (including pedestrian traffic) should stop driving until they can discuss the issue with their physicians. Medication can sometimes make drivers feel sleepy or confused, and some aging drivers even find themselves overwhelmed in otherwise normal driving situations. Are my loved ones concerned about my driving? Aging drivers may feel offended when family members question their ability to drive. However, the NHTSA notes that sometimes other people notice things about a person’s driving that the person does not. The concern expressed by loved ones should not be taken lightly. Do I drive with passengers? Drivers who routinely drive with passengers, especially young children, carry extra responsibility. As a result, such drivers owe it to themselves and their passengers to honestly assess their driving abilities. Various remedies can address age-related driving issues, and drivers should discuss them with their doctors the moment they feel as though their skills behind the wheel are starting to diminish. D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

Seymour Library: Brockport’s Award-Winning Gem By Amanda Dudek Area, DeVuyst’s fun and spooky program in collaboration with the teens.

I

n honor of September, National Library Card Sign-up Month, we are taking a closer look at some of your favorite, local libraries!

Seymour Library is the award-winning, Brockport-based library which has embraced the challenge of serving three municipalities at once: Brockport, Clarkson and Sweden. This year, Seymour Library received the annual Library of the Year award from the Rochester Regional Library Council. “It is quite an honor,” said Seymour Library Adult Services Librarian, Abby DeVuyst. “All the libraries in Upstate New York are considered, and we won in the public libraries category, thanks to our wonderful patrons and the postcards they wrote in about why they love us and need us and about why we are important to them.”

Every program offered is free. “Nobody is charged for any kind of programming, which is wonderful,” said DeVuyst. “Everyone is welcome. We are an option for people who do not have the funds to go out. There are so many amazing things they can do here. This is a huge community service, and, while it may be forgotten sometimes, it shouldn’t be.” DeVuyst mentioned a wide variety of needful services the library provides from Alzheimer’s programs to help searching for employment to assistance signing up for health care. “This is so important to us because I think a lot of times, when people are doing well in life and they do not need our services, they forget about us, but we continue to help people from all walks of life,” she said.

The 53rd Annual RRLC Library of the Year Lunch and award ceremony took place on June 6th. “Several people complimented us on providing the level of service we do considering we serve three communities,” recalled DeVuyst. “That was really wonderful. It was a nice nod to the fact that we are relevant, utilized by the community and span the age spectrum. We are so proud and happy to be that source of community center our members are asking for.” Of course, being that center requires funding. In the past, Seymour Library had to shorten its open hours by two hours a day due to budget constraints. Thanks to a generous donation, this was reduced to a current decrease of one hour per day. “We will always do whatever we can to remain community and patron focused, providing the best service to everyone,” assured DeVuyst. One indicator of Seymour Library’s importance to its communities is its continued growth. Established in 1936 when it was donated by the Seymour family, the library outgrew its original Victorian home, and its much larger building was constructed at its current location on East Avenue in Brockport. Further expansions, such as the space which now serves as the History Room, were subsequently added. Even now, four study rooms are being built to provide quiet spaces for the community. “Libraries are no longer as quiet as they used to be,” explained DeVuyst. “They are vibrant hubs for the community.” In addition to its many useful and educational services, Seymour Library offers many enjoyable programs each month. “We have many new and different kinds of programs,” DeVuyst said. “Aside from local history, my arts, crafts and skill learning programs are the most popular. Our members are so open to expressing themselves artistically. That is what stands out to me the most: the talent and the creativity of the patrons we serve.” While Seymour Library provides many participation opportunities for children and adults, Abby DeVuyst pointed out its “huge, vibrant” teen population. “This is unusual for many libraries,” she said. “We have many teen volunteers, and during the summer months, many of them give up their time freely to help with children’s programming and around the library. In the fall, they start up groups, help in the library, do community service other activities. “Coming up in October, we will introduce Draw Down, a comprehensive plan created in a think tank by geniuses to address our global warming situation,” said DeVuyst. “I attended the program myself, and it was the first time I left such a seminar feeling hopeful.” October will also usher in Haunted Ghost Stories of the

To those looking to support Seymour Library or another local library, DeVuyst encourages, “Let your town supervisors and other elected officials know how important your library is to you, on the local level, in Albany and nationally. Let them know the community is invested in its library and is watching.” DeVuyst also invited everyone to, “Come and get a library card! HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

The Family of the late

Tim Stoneham would like to express our sincere gratitude for the love, support and kindness shown to us during our recent bereavement. The visits, cards, flowers and food meant so much to us all. We also wish to give our most heartfelt thanks to the East Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department. Your tribute to Tim was above and beyond what we had ever hoped for and your support meant so much to all of us.

Thank you so much!

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.

The Batavia City School District is seeking candidates who are highly motivated, energetic and committed

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary.
