messy, unsightly nuisance. Their acidic composition also may cause them to damage paint over time. Bugs and droppings can be sticky, so you will need to work with something that will remove the splatter without removing the paint in the process. A product like WD-40 may help. This oily product is normally used on rust and hinges. When applied with a cloth and allowed to penetrate the stain, it can loosen difficult-to-remove sticky substances. Always test any product you use in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn’t damage or discolor your the paint.

Insects or droppings that are fresh may come off relatively easily with a good washing or hosing off of the car. Retailers also sell specialty insect sponges to remove bugs and other debris.

PEACH BRUSCHETTA WITH BLUE CHEESE

Serves 4

4 slices country bread 2 peaches

Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing 1/4 pound blue cheese, gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese

Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes.

While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact.

When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve.

Enjoy dining out with kids

Offer plenty of praise: children know when they are doing a great job and behaving well in a restaurant.Engage kids in conversation and keep them entertained. Boredom or attentionseeking behavior can make dining out with youngsters more difficult to manage.

A treat or a special reward (sticker or coloring book)can be offered to a child who behaveswhen dining out.

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)

Serves 4

1 pound morcilla blood sausage

1 pound mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, slivered

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons white wine

1 cup shelled spring peas

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

2 tablespoons mint oil

Mint Oil

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup chopped mint

Pinch of salt

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

MAKING CROWN ADJUSTMENTS FOR A PERFECT FIT

Dental crowns are used to cover and support damaged or severely decayed teeth. Crowns are made to match the color of surrounding teeth and help restore the shape, appearance, and strength of the original tooth. After a crown is placed, persisting soreness, sensitivity, or pain for more than a few days can indicate a poorly fitted or improperly placed crown. If applying pressure to the crown causes discomfort, it may require an adjustment. New issues with your bite are also common because a new crown can interfere with your teeth’s natural alignment. Your crown may need adjusting if your teeth don’t come together like they did before. An improperly positioned crown can also irritate the gums, causing additional discomfort.

Crowns are just one way you can change the look of your teeth and

the power of your smile . Don’t hide behind a lack of information. A visit to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is a chance to find out about the many ways to maximize your dental options. New patients are always welcome here at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we want our patients to be comfortable not only with the function of their teeth, but also with the appearance of their smile. For an appointment, please call us at 585.343.4246.

P.S. It’s common for a crown to need minor adjustments in the days or weeks following the procedure. Ask your dentist about your options for follow-up visits and adjustments when getting a crown.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Fosamax Is an Appropriate, Albeit

Powerful Medicine for Osteopenia

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 65-year-old, overweight white woman. I recently had a DEXA scan, and based on the results, my general physician prescribed Fosamax for osteopenia.

The first dose created a horrible reaction two days after ingestion, with severe pain in both of my arms, my neck, and my legs. I was in absolute agony for two days, then it cleared up. With the next dose a week later, I hesitated, but still decided to take it. Two days later, the reaction hit me again, only worse. I could barely walk, and my energy was so low. I spent four days in bed, except to cry when heading to the bathroom. I had not taken my Lasix prescription for those four days, as I could barely make it to the bathroom.

I contacted my doctor, and she discontinued Fosamax. She’s referring me to a rheumatologist. I read that this drug has all my symptoms, plus more, listed under the severe reaction warning. I will not take it again.

Also, a friend told me that this drug is not effective for osteoporosis after more than 20 years of drug tests, and I should not have been prescribed this drug, since I have osteopenia, not osteoporosis. Your thoughts? -- C.W.

ANSWER: Alendronate (Fosamax) is in the class of drugs called bisphosphonates. These are powerful drugs that should not be prescribed lightly. They do have the potential for severe side effects. Severe musculoskeletal pain can occur days or months (sometimes years) after starting the medicine. The Food and Drug Administration has advised prescribers to discuss this possibility with their patients so that the drug can be stopped immediately if it occurs. There are other options available if the person really needs treatment.

Your friend is half right. Powerful drugs like Fosamax are usually not indicated in people who have low bone mass (osteopenia) without osteoporosis. However, a history of a fragility fracture (breaking a bone from minor trauma that isn’t expected to cause a fracture) can make the diagnosis of osteoporosis, even if the bone density isn’t in the usual osteoporotic range. A person can have a high risk of fractures for other reasons, and a clinical tool called the FRAX score helps clinicians identify those who might benefit from treatment.

But your friend is also half wrong. When used appropriately, Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs are effective at reducing the risk of fractures. A vertebral body fracture can cause years of pain and be avoided easily, while a hip fracture can be devastating. So, there are very good reasons to prescribe these medicines.

Finally, let me warn readers against complacence in treatment with these drugs. They may be appropriately prescribed for a high-risk person, but most people should not stay on this drug forever. Follow-up DEXA scans should guide therapy, and after three to five years, a conscious decision should be made whether to continue therapy.

Readers who have been on these drugs for more than five years and haven’t had careful follow-ups on their results should ask their doctors whether they still need to be taking them.***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Here’s A Tip

* When preparing outdoor furniture for winter storage, it's important to give it a nice cleaning. If you have a truck, why not load it up and bring it to the local selfserve car wash? e specialized brushes make it easy to clean right there in the back of the vehicle, and a pressure rinse gets soap and dirt from all the nooks and crannies.

* "While at a backyard barbecue now that the weather has turned nice out (down in the South, anyway), I learned this trick from a neighbor. Put hot dogs in the slow cooker. Don't add water or anything. ey taste really good without taking up space on the grill." -- J.V. in Alabama

HOW TO CLEAN AND PREPARE OUTDOOR FURNITURE FOR THE SEASON

As temperatures rise, people increasingly venture outdoors to soak up the sun, enjoy the mild breezes and entertain under the open sky. Clean and comfortable furniture can make outdoor entertaining that much more enjoyable.

After months in storage or nestled under protective tarps, outdoor furniture likely needs a good cleaning before it’s put to the test once again. Mildew may have formed, insects may be hiding out within cushions or other crevices and dirt may have accumulated - even if the furniture was cleaned before being stored away. Experts recommend cleaning outdoor furniture between three and four times per year to keep it in optimal condition. Before cleaning, determine the material your furniture is made of, as some cleaning products may not be safe for all materials. When in doubt, read the care tags on cushions and other products or refer back to the original packaging for cleaning instructions. Always test a cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area first.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE

(NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.

Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.

Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.

For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working.

“It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”

It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”

Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts.

“I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.”

To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

Big shout out

To the Lyons club, I can finally hear. Thank you so much!

Kindness in our community

This past Sunday my husband and I visited a local flea market. Several people saw me struggling to maneuver his wheelchair over the gravel and offered to help. One kind young man pushed him all the way back to the car when he saw that we were ready to leave. It is comforting to know that people can be so compassionate. We are blessed to be surrounded by such kind and thoughtful strangers. Thank you all.

Thank you!

THANK YOU! To the gentleman who picked me up after I fell in the parking lot of a Restaurant on Lake Road August 1st.

Went to a town park concert. Kids running around. Most enjoying the music. Then there were those who have to talk louder than the music with every other word is the “f” word. What’s wrong with these people? Did they even graduate elementary school? Did their parents teach them any class? One mother, who I applaud, went over and asked them to stop cursing around her child. That lasted only about five minutes. She moved to another spot. Stay home if you’re not there for the music and keep your garbage mouth among yourselves. We don’t want to hear you!

Let’s Fix This Accident Waiting to Happen

I see so many people walking and biking on the roads at night while wearing dark colored clothing. This is an accident waiting to happen. If people don’t realize it, they need to be educated about how dangerous it is to walk on roads without sidewalks without reflective gear or bright clothing! Local colleges should be giving out reflective gear instead of pens or other knickknacks if they aren’t already.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESSES

Share experiences through word-of-mouth. Word-of-mouth marketing still works, and consumers can play an important role in ensuring that it benefits local businesses. According to the marketing solution experts at Hibü, word-of-mouth marketing remains the most popular way to recommend a business.Consumers trust what others say about a business, so positive experiences with a local firm can be shared with family, friends and neighbors looking for similar services.

Karen Samis: Leading the Fight Against Cancer with the Walk of Hope

In 1996, Karen Samis moved from Middlebury, Connecticut, to LeRoy, NY. She and husband, Steve, a LeRoy native, married in 1998 and raised three children, Katelyn (26), Stephany (23), and Zachary (17), in this close-knit town. Karen has taught high school math in the City of Rochester for 21 years, but her passion for making a difference extends far beyond the classroom.

Karen is deeply involved in her community, organizing two annual running events that raise funds for local causes. e Tri the Oatka 5K, formerly also a triathlon, and the Jinglin All the Way Festive 5K have supported LeRoy community initiatives including the LeRoy Pool, the Backpack Club, the LeRoy Food Pantry, and a scholarship for graduating high school seniors. e summer’s Walk of Hope, a cancer awareness and fundraising event, holds a special place in her heart.

Karen’s journey with the Walk of Hope began in 2006, when she lost her mother to lung cancer at just 69 years old. Karen says, “My mom was given 3-6 months to live a er her diagnosis. at was a kick to the stomach, but with the advancements we have made with treatment and research in the fight against cancer, she lived another 1½ years.” Karen was determined to fight back against the disease that had taken her mother.

Initially involved in Relay for Life events in other towns, Karen decided to bring the cause closer to home. With the support of the American Lung Association, the LeRoy community, and local

For the Luminary Silent Lap, luminary bags are lit and participants walk in silence to celebrate, remember, and honor all who have been and are affected by cancer. e event culminates in a final lap when all participants walk the track together, symbolizing the unity and strength of the community in the fight against cancer.

us, the Walk of Hope was born in 2019, with proceeds going directly to Genesee Cancer Assistance (GCA) out of Batavia. Karen says, “Our first event as Walk of Hope raised just over $12,000, and GCA was very appreciative.” Despite COVID cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 events, the Walk of Hope returned in 2022 as a mini walk and raised $8,000, followed by nearly $16,000 in 2023, and almost $14,000 this year.

e Walk of Hope is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a community gathering filled with emotion, inspiration, and support. Each year, the event kicks off with a speech from a cancer survivor. is year, Tricia Doty, who recently received her diagnosis, shared her journey, her challenges, and her commitment to advocacy. e Survivor Lap is a highlight each year, a powerful moment where all participants cheer on cancer survivors as they take a lap together; the survivors then enjoyed

e Walk of Hope featured food sales, a huge basket raffle, and team fundraisers, with local business sponsors contributing to its success. ough Karen says it’s hard to gauge how many people attended each year’s event because people come and go all night, this year featured six official teams and was well-received by all participants. is year’s event also featured a flag football game and live music, which Karen raved about.

Karen’s dedication to the Walk of Hope is driven by a personal mission to keep her mother’s memory alive and to support others in their fight against cancer. She reflects that people don’t usually think much about cancer unless or until they are personally affected by it.

She says, “I will never forget the struggles [my mother] had in her advanced stages, how I felt helpless, and how I held her hand as she passed away and was finally at peace.” rough the Walk of Hope, Karen hopes to inspire others to get involved and to continue the fight. “Together we are stronger than cancer.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

PREPARING FOR A NIGHT OUT

Make a reservation. If dining out is in the plans,be sure to call the desired establishment in advance to see if they are taking reservations and learn if any restrictions are in place. There’s a good chance indoor dining establishments will still be subject to reduced guest capacity, and even restaurants that had walk-in service may now require advanced notice of dining parties, no matter how big or small.

PAW’S CORNER

BE A CHAMPION PET SITTER

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm 13 years old and want to make money by being a pet sitter and dog walker. To try it out, my dad suggested that I pet sit for the neighbor who is going on vacation for two weeks. ey agreed! I'm really excited. What tips do you have so I do a good job? -- Austin in Portland, Maine

DEAR AUSTIN: What a great idea! You can try out pet sitting and see if you like it, and your dad is there to give support and advice. Here are a few tips:

-- Bring a notebook and pen with you to every pet sitting visit.

-- Talk to the pet owner before they leave. Get all of the pet's health information. Find out what time they need to be fed and any medications they need to take. Get their veterinarian's number and any special instructions. Find out where the food, treats and leash are stored. (Write this all in the notebook!)

-- Keep to the agreed-upon time to visit and/or walk the pet. It's important for the pet to stay on a regular schedule, and it builds trust with your customer.

-- Do not feed the pet any food or treats not provided (or specified) by the owner.

-- Contact the owner if you have additional questions or if an emergency arises.

ese are just the basics. As you build your pet-sitting empire, you will encounter different situations and will learn the best ways to respond. Your parents can help, and so can that trusty notebook! During and a er every visit, review your notes about the experience and think about how you can do a better job or accomplish certain tasks more effectively.
