W H AT I S Y O U R FA V O R I T E H O L I D AY TRADITION? One of my favorite Christmas traditions is finding our Christmas tree! Last year, my boys and I cut our own for the first time. We brought the wrong kind of saw, and in the Christmas spirit, a nearby family saved the day. I love seeing the look of pure happiness on my children’s faces as we hunt for and decorate our tree! - Amanda, Content Writer

Every year our family has Christmas movies playing throughout the day, ranging from Miracle on 34th Street to Elf. Whether it’s laughter or singing, there’s always the sound of the holidays in our house! - Kaitlin, Content Writer & Copy Editor

We take a train ride to see Santa Claus & Mrs. Claus (and Rudolph) and take a drive around town to see all the Christmas lights. But spending time together and creating memories with my family is my absolute favorite. - Laurie, Advertising Sales

Making homemade photo gift tags adds a sentimental touch to each package. I save them and use from year-to-year. - Cristie, Creative Director My favorite holiday tradition was walking back with my parents and brothers from Christmas Eve Mass. One year in particular when I was about 10 years old, I remember it was the most perfect scene of snowflakes cascading down and glistening under the street lights. We could barely see in front of our faces, but we were all laughing and sliding in the snow together. The feeling of pure joy, peace, and love is something I will never forget. - Brittany, Advertising Sales Thanksgiving morning my mom, sister, neighbor and I get up and walk the Gobble Wobble 5K that the Town of Gates puts on. A perfect way to get up and start the day! - Kara, Web/Graphic Designer & Social

Every Black Friday weekend we take a vacation with our kids to New York City! Our kids enjoy seeing the window displays, toy stores, cathedral and ice skating rink all lit up for the holidays. It’s magical to be at Bryant Park listening to Christmas music with the smell of cookies and hot chocolate in the air. - Sarah, Designer & Photographer

RENEWAL BY ANDERSEN

ON THE A GREAT WINDOW IS ONLY AS COVER GOOD AS THE INSTALLATION BEHIND IT Looking to replace your

windows but concerned about installation? Renewal by

Andersen installs state-of-the-art windows quickly and securely, with no mess or hassle. Buffalo Installation Manager,

JOHN NEUREUTHER, answers your questions about this experience.

What would my window installation process look like? THERE ARE 5 GENERAL STEPS: Homeowners begin working with our measurement technicians upon contracting with us, and they receive a direct line to their own concierge specialist who will keep them updated on their order status, answer questions about finance and our process, arrange scheduling and provide follow up. Upon arrival, our specially trained installation team prepares the workspace while the team leader greets the homeowner. Always a certified master installer, he also verifies which windows are being replaced and confirms their measurements. Tarps and drop cloths are placed to catch any dust, refuse and debris, and we create a safe and secure workspace.

Might my home ever be left in a state of disarray? Absolutely not! Our installation guidelines are more in depth than those throughout the industry. Andersen has made the process more efficient, more customized to each home and need, and our installers go to great lengths to ensure each home is not negatively impacted. They make certain each property is in better condition than when they arrived.

Could inclement weather delay my installation? Inclement weather such as a slight rain does not typically delay an installation. Renewal by Andersen windows are a genius product and can fit any application and any weather. That is why we have the strongest warranty in the industry, including 20 years on our glass.

What type of service and support is available once my windows are installed? Installing windows is just the beginning of our relationship with our customers. Our goal is to bring you out of the window buying cycle forever. As always, we maintain transparent communication with you, and our service continues for the life of your warranty. If there is ever a concern, a simple call to our local office will bring one of our service technicians to your door.

Each window is removed by a systematic method, and replaced by a new window, which is then sealed to the weather, before the next window is begun. Once every window is in and sealed, the install crew trims the exterior of the windows. The space is usually open only a few brief minutes, limiting the home’s exposure to the elements. Our installation team leaders complete a quality assurance walk through with each homeowner, verifying high quality, function, and satisfaction. Finally, an installation manager reaches out to confirm complete satisfaction.

Let your windows be the star Tips from Renewal by Andersen

Don’t overlook your windows when it comes to holiday decorating. Bringing attention to windows delights from indoors and out.

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW

Hang multi- sized individual snowflakes at different heights to bring a light and airy feel to your windows. A bonus is that these can stay well into January for a winter wonderland.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Placing a single candle in windows is a tradition that dates back to Colonial times. The amber glow evokes the warmth of home and family. The simplicity of a single candle may be all that your window needs and will let the beauty of your window shine. Do your research on what is safe as well as energy efficient.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

Adorn your windowsill with the sights and smells of natural greenery. Pines, firs, and cedars are good to use for indoor decoration since they dry out slowly and hold their needles best at warm interior temperatures. They may last for several weeks if properly treated and cared for.

We see each installation & every contract as an opportunity for us to shine and give our homeowners something to be proud of.

Happy Holidays from your Renewal by Andersen Team!

a festive table on a dime

YOU

C AN

DO

IT!

Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.

Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.

Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.

Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.

Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat. Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.

Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

What is the Rustic Buffalo Artisan Market?

The Rustic Buffalo Artisan Market is a collection of over 50 local artisans carefully curated from over 300 applicants. We saw that extraordinary artisans were missing opportunities to sell their goods locally due to COVID-19 and had to act. About 90% of them are Buffalo related; we love Buffalo! Which kinds of products are available? We have a wide variety of high-end products such as sculptures, fine art, textiles, goods with custom work, gourmet foods, rustic and wood décor, repurposed furniture, jewelry, handmade soaps and even a line of candles that smells like Cheerios! As certified dealers, we are also honored to carry Fusion Mineral Paint, a weatherproof, one coat paint; no sanding required. Shipping is available nationwide.

How were artisans selected? Our Rustic Buffalo research team reviewed hundreds of applications, scoured their social media, and conducted interviews to present the best of the best at our market. Our strict criteria included length of time and experience in a particular artistry as well as uniqueness of product, packaging,

product names, materials, fragrances and so on. We are very proud of these artisans.

Do you have any upcoming events?

We will host a Holiday Shopping Soirée on Saturday & Sunday, December 12th & 13th in our 3,700 sq. ft., 1800s era, renovated and beautifully lit barn. Enjoy hot cocoa, popcorn, roasted chestnuts, and most importantly, support Buffalo artisans by shopping local this holiday season. Check back for more events involving food trucks, bands, wine tastings and more!

AND BABY MAKES THREE:

Career, Marriage &Family 2020

BY AMANDA DUDEK

A husband at the office, a wife at home, one house, two cars, and 2.5 kids: for decades, this image defined the ideal family. While it is still a viable option, recent decades have brought us many exciting options. Today, two parents who work outside the home must navigate both a successful career and the development of well-balanced children. Can it be done? One Buffalo family answers,

“Yes!”

Meet Aalok Karambelkar: Buffalo husband, attorney, father, and foodie. A Pennsylvania transplant, Aalok first moved to New York to attend the U of R, beginning his education towards becoming an attorney. It was at the U of R that he met his wife, Neha, in a classic boy-meets-girl moment. Their eyes met across a crowded room, and by graduation, they were a couple. Both Aalok and Neha were pursing their law degrees. When this took Neha to NYC, Aalok turned down a job offer to remain with his sweetheart. In 2013, Aalok and Neha were married. The couple enjoyed life in New York City, but it was not where they wanted to raise a family. Both were seeking job offers, and Aalok was offered a position alongside two of his good friends at Kenney Shelton Liptack Nowak LLP of Buffalo. Neha also found a position with a nonprofit, so the couple returned to Buffalo.

“My work focuses on the defense of injury claims for the most part,” he said. Although Aalok is a trial lawyer, he is quick to point out that it is not as glamorous as TV makes it out to be. “Not many cases go to trial; it is more like a long chess match,” he explained. “I may try an average of one case per year. What I really enjoy is the problem-solving aspect of my work: being able to look at a lawsuit and find a solution. People often think of lawyers as problem solvers, but that is how I look at it. I consider the issues of a case and work out a solution which puts our clients in the best position.” Even so, Aalok admits there is a unique energy in the courtroom. “It is an adrenaline rush you can’t describe when you hear that knock on the door indicating the jury has reached a verdict,” he said. 2020 brought a special blessing to the Karambelkars. In July, Aalok and Neha welcomed their first baby, Uma. “Good things seem to happen to us in 7’s!” laughed Aalok. “In 2006, Neha and I began dating. In 2013, we married and began new careers in Buffalo, and in 2020, we had our first baby girl.” “Becoming a dad is exactly how people describe it,” he continued. “Before Uma was born, I never thought getting 6 hours of sleep would be heaven. It is so much work, but it is just the best. You have these tender moments where you are looking down at your daughter as you rock her to sleep, and she smiles. That kind of joy is indescribable. It makes it all worth it.” As anyone with children can tell you; however, parenting is not all cuddles and tender moments. Neha and Aalok feel fortunate to have several friends who offer a wealth of information and advice. “My welcome-to-

12 DECEMBER 2020 | HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS fatherhood moment came at four in the morning,” said Aalok. “Uma had thrown up right after my wife had finished nursing her, so we took her in the changing room. My wife took off the diaper, and Uma started pooping all over the changing table. Neha handed her to me, and our baby peed all over me and the floor. It was all three at once with our baby screaming the whole time. We had to find the humor in that chaos!”

Enjoying a family trip to Ellicottville

Neha and Aalok have decided to face these parenting challenges as a team. “The jobs of parenting are real,” said Aalok matter-of-factly. “My wife and I are both professionals, so we support each other in terms of sharing parenting responsibilities and in our careers. We have a pretty good system of support, and we will make sure it stays that way even when my wife goes back to work.” Continuing their careers is a mutual necessity. “My wife and I are both ambitious people, so satisfying our desires professionally is extremely important,” shared Aalok. “She, too, is a lawyer and has no desire to stay at home with a baby permanently. Even if she wanted to, she jokes that I would push her back because I know that is what she needs.” Fortunately, the ability to work from home has gone from an exception to an expectation, a silver lining of 2020. “That didn’t really exist before,” Aalok observed. “The way in which the world has changed has really worked in my favor. Now, if I need to, I can set up shop right at home.” He adds that both grandmothers have also been very supportive, particularly during the first month with baby Uma. His employers at Kenney Shelton Liptack Nowak LLP have been understanding, as well. “I was originally in a rush to get back to meet my annual hours requirement,” recalled Aalok. “The people at the firm know how important family is having been through it, and they said not to rush back.” Aalok enjoyed three weeks off followed by a week part-time before he returned. “I am lucky to work for people who care about family,” he said. “When you find a place like that, it makes you want to stick around for the long haul.” Aalok and Neha plan to be equally a part of their daughter’s life. “That is our vision of what a family should be,” affirmed Aalok. “We will figure it out. We don’t want to be the parents who say, ‘We can’t do this or that; it’s not worth it’ because it is more challenging with a small child. For example, we took Uma down to Ellicottville overnight, and the number of things we had to pack was just incredible, but we bundled her up, went to Pumpkinville Village, and enjoyed a Sunday morning with the fall foliage.” Their love for travel and culture extends beyond planned vacations to include eating and cooking culturally diverse foods. “We actually love to cook,” he said. “I used to make these elaborate meals and post them on social media. Everyone told us we wouldn’t be able to do that once we had a baby, but we surprised them. Recently, we had friends over for dinner and cooked a Sous Vide Argentinian-style strip steak. It came out pretty well, so I was able to tell myself, ‘I still have it!’” Aalok and Neha are determined to develop Uma’s palette, too. “It is important that our daughter eats what we eat when she can,” shared Aalok. “We are a team in the kitchen, cooking and being creative. So, we take the time to go out as a couple in search of inspiration.” They couldn’t choose a better city than Buffalo in which to find it. “My wife and I consider ourselves the gourmet, foodie type, and in Buffalo, we always find new places to eat and drink,” said Aalok. “The city has a great restaurant scene. There really is something for everyone, not just pizza and wings.”

We Love Buffalo The Karambelkars didn’t fall in love with Buffalo just for its food, however. “I couldn’t ask for a better place to live,” Aalok enthused. “We live in North Buffalo. It’s a pretty happening neighborhood, and we have put down roots here. Professionally, Buffalo is a very collegial place to practice, and reputation matters. In NYC, it was very impersonal, and no one ever did any favors for each other. Here, we have a tight knit community. People are very kind to each other and look out for each other. Our neighbors are caring, and they even plow each other’s sidewalks. I consider myself a friendly person, as well, so I love it. We couldn’t think of living anywhere else.”

GIVING A BRAND NEW TWIST TO

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS BY KAITLIN DONNAN

Move over Chip and Joanna Gaines! There’s a new girl in town. Buffalo native Ashley Huber is putting her own twists on typical holiday decorating traditions. Featuring a mix of DIY and personal flair, her social media is bursting with her inspiring holiday style. We sat down with Ashley for some insight on how she goes about her process just in time for the season! How would you describe your holiday décor?

Definitely similar to my every day which is cozy, inviting, and warm! I love all things vintage, so I like to play with that in my Christmas décor, as well. My holiday is like every other day, and I like my guests to feel welcome as soon as they walk in the door.

Does it change year-to-year?

Yes and no. Every year, I try to add some new elements, and in the past, I’ve tried out a few different themes. For the most part, I find myself coming back to a classic cottage style Christmas. I start out using a neutral palette and go from there, but I always bring in touches of traditional red and fresh greenery.

When do you start decorating?

Before, I would wait until after Thanksgiving, but as of late, I’ve been starting in mid-November. I like Christmas to feel like more than a one-month season, and we’ve really enjoyed the cozy lights during our turkey dinner! Every year, I start with the tree in our living room, since it sets the tone for the season and gives me a direction for the way I want to decorate the rest of the house.

Is there any part of decorating that has any special meaning to you, or do you have any traditions?

In the other rooms, I’ll put up smaller trees so that there’s one in each window. On one of those trees, I have a collection of angel ornaments that I always use. Those are really special to me because my mom has given me a new one each year since I was five years old. That tradition is one I look forward to every year!

Do you get the family involved?

Yes! My husband loves Christmas time as well, and it is always helpful with the decorating. He focuses on some of our outdoor décor while I work on the inside, but we always decorate the tree together. It’s our holiday tradition.

Do you have anything you would consider your favorite part of decorating?

You can check out some more of Ashley’s decorating styles and DIY projects at:

The nostalgia of some of the vintage pieces I use always make me happy, and I love the feeling of creating a cozy space. Your home is your haven, and it should always feel good to be there.

Expert, Quality Craftsmanship What inspires you? How would you describe the feeling you get while decorating? I get inspired every Christmas season while I’m decorating, and it’s always because of the feeling I’ve created in our home to make it cozy and warm. I love to put on some Christmas music, light a candle, and deck the halls—literally! My husband and I always devote a whole day to decorating, so by the time the sun sets, we can sit back and enjoy the glow of the twinkle lights. To me, it’s always such a great feeling, and it really sets the tone for not only the rest of winter, but also how I want the house to feel even after Christmas is over.

A lawyer, Don assists senior clients as they review their financial information, evaluates any tax or insurance issues, prepares any required legal documentation needed to move in, reviews the resident agreements/applications and more, saving the families time and money involved in hiring outside resources. With her Doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy and extensive experience in health care, including working in rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing, hospitals and assisted living communities, Julie uses her expertise to help determine the appropriate senior living communities which best match each client’s specific level of care needs. She also works directly with a prospective community’s staff and CarePatrol clients to review and discuss any medical recommendations or care needs.

“Not only would it be morally wrong to move someone into a community where they could not be given proper care, but it could also be very dangerous,” said Don, addressing the importance of working with experts on selecting the right community. “CarePatrol was founded to prevent such situations. We tailor our recommendations to your specific health needs, rather than basing them on what might work for someone else you know. Safety is the biggest concern when it comes to Seniors.” Don and Julie can meet with you seven days a week, inperson or virtually. They take care of everything from start to finish, including gathering the necessary personal and financial information, finding the appropriate communities, scheduling and attending tours, helping with all the steps needed to move into the new community, and continuing to stay in touch with each senior and his or her family to ensure continued happiness after they move in.

! d le e c n a c n U Christmas

7 Festive Activities for your Holiday Season I don’t know about you, but I think I am suffering from 2020 PTSD. I find myself searching for masks so I can put my children on their bus, bathing in sanitizer as I enter the office (counting my employment blessings), and looking over my shoulder at every loud noise for that wave of Japanese murder hornets! As 2020 comes to a close, I hold my breath, hoping the holiday season will be a little more Tiny Tim and a little less Freddy Kruger. I’ve started holiday planning for an unfamiliar world, a cross between Zombieland, The Grinch, and a Jumanji in which I’m Kevin Hart. We’ll need a tree. (Preferably without fire-breathing termites. They’re a thing, right?) Then, of course, there are presents. (If I shop local, can I douse the items with sanitizer in-store?) Finally, it is time to decide where to gather. (Whose home is least likely to implode, fall into a sinkhole, or be struck by a flaming meteor?) I am clearly joking (well, mostly!), but I think it is fair to say that 2020 has left many of us hesitant to make plans, expecting the worst. We offer you 12 festive events and activities which are sure to boost your holiday spirit. 2020 may have put coal in our stockings this year, but it can’t stop us from having the best holiday season ever!
