Curtiss Hotel: History. Elegance. Luxury. Just a block and a half from Shea’s and sister business, the Buffalo Chophouse, stands the breathtaking Curtiss Hotel, a 5-star boutique hotel coneniently situated within Buffalo’s burgeoning theatre district. Created by visionary Mark Croce, the Curtiss Hotel is built inside of the renoated historic landmark Harlow C. Curtiss building located at 210 Franklin Street in Downtown Buffalo. Today, Jessica Croce, wife to the late Mark Croce, continues to develop the luxurious experiences for which the Curtiss Hotel quickly become known.
The Harlow C. Curtiss building became available in 1999-2000. Mark purchased it, putting his dream project on hold as he finished the Statler. Finally, Mark was able to turn his attention to the gutted structure. Having traveled extensively, he had never had a hotel experience he truly loved. Now, Mark was free to create a hotel filled with all the amenities he desired.
In 2017, the Curtiss Hotel opened to a completely sold out house. Featuring 68 ultra-luxurious, high-tech rooms and breathtaking spaces, the Curtiss Hotel’s amenities are unlike anything Buffalo has ever seen before. Highspeed elevators whisk you onto your floor or the VUE, a rooftop lounge with a fire pit, cocktails, and spectacular panoramic views of downtown Buffalo, Lake Erie, and the Canadian shoreline. Adjacent to the valet porte-cochère and main entranceway, the Curtiss Hotel invites guests to enjoy Buffalo’s first and only all-weather Urban Hot Springs experience. The hottest new place in town, the Curtiss Hotel has remained in demand for a variety of experiences, from weddings, birthday celebrations, and other formal events to staycations and business travel.
Working closely with designer Paul LaMorticella, Mark made his dream a reality. His most important, must-have feature? The hotel’s signature revolving bar. Western New York’s only revolving bar is located alongside The Chez Ami Restaurant (“House of Friends”) – the hotel’s 200+ seat casual upscale restaurant with world-class dining and year-round patio seating along West Huron Street.
Sadly, tragedy struck the Curtiss when Mark Croce passed away, and Covid arrived. Fortunately, the Curtiss was able to continue running throughout the pandemic. “At the Curtiss, we became a big family, everyone helping with everything. We got through it together.” At last, the Curtiss was able to fully open once again. It was during this time that staycations at the Curtiss became unprecedentedly popular.
“It was my husband’s dream ever since I met him in 1999,” said Jessica. Although he was working on Buffalo’s Coliseum building and the Brownstone Bistro at the time—not to mention the Buffalo Chophouse the following year, Mark’s vision never wavered. “All of that time, he wanted to take the theatre district and make it a destination for everyone to come and enjoy.”

LOCAL DREAM STAY: DELL COLLECTIVE // CARALYN MIRAND’S TRAVEL TIPS
10 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
LOCAL DREAM STAY
Only one hour east of Buffalo and one hour south of Rochester sits the up-and-coming artisanal, farm-to-table community of Perry, New York. Neighboring this idyllic village, Dell Collective stands nestled among the hills along the western edge of nationally acclaimed Letchworth State Park. Amanda Osborn–along with her husband, Nate–fell in love with the Airbnb concept while traveling abroad and seeking out one-of-a-kind, unique stays and experiences. With years of experience in hospitality, Amanda found herself inspired by the unusual and creative spaces she and her husband experienced from little thatch roofed cottages to simple backyard shanties.
In 2019, Amanda began reinventing her home with her own unique taste and vibes of a Scandinavian sense of living referred to as Hygge (hooguh), “a quality of coziness… a feeling of contentment or well-being.” Decorating the interior of the butter-yellow farmhouse with hues of yellow, copper accents, exposed reclaimed beams, salvaged chandeliers, and other cozy elements, Amanda brought hygge to Western New York. Their first Airbnb was such a runaway success that soon the couple added a second location: a cottage on nearby Silver Lake known as the Silver Lake Haus. Not long after, the third location was created back on the main RW How Property overlooking Letchworth, Highbanks at the West Barn. Fast forward to summer 2022 and the Osborns have now finished their fourth short-term rental space (Southview at the West Barn). It is a barn space with the addition of a silo neighboring their first barn space (Highbanks at the West Barn). The RW How Property overlooks Letchworth State Park and is home to the farmhouse (RW How Haus), and the two West Barn spaces. The Highbanks and Southview spaces in the West Barn can be rented as individual spaces, or as one larger space sleeping up to 12 guests! The entire property is also available for up to 20 guests. During the summer months guests can visit with several friendly farm animals that reside on the property including Boots the babydoll lamb, Jenni the donkey and Hazel the potbelly pig. For Amanda, creating these hygge living spaces has given her the creative outlet she craved, particularly during Covid. As for design inspiration, Amanda says they simply buy and save items they are drawn to via thrifting, salvaging and acquiring unique pieces. Over years of collecting, each space has evolved to include a monochromatic color scheme. “Five years ago, I was all about white and struggled with incorporating color. Then, I started down the road of incorporating monochromatic colors like green in the barn [Highbanks], yellow in the farmhouse and blue in the Silver Lake Haus. In our silo barn space [Southview], the colors are black and terracotta.” “We just buy things we’re drawn to that fit the vibe of the space we’re working on. It goes in the back barn, and when it comes time to furnish a space, we bring it all in and find its forever home. Thrifting is an avid hobby of mine which works out swimmingly with 4 places, now I can usually find a home for most anything I can’t live without!” “We want all Dell Collective stays to be an experience for our guests. When our guests walk in, their senses are immediately stimulated, it’s better in person upon first glance; they smell our signature scent, the music is playing in the background and they quickly understand the meaning of hygge.”

HYGGE
It’s that warm, cozy feeling of well-being. It’s a toasty mug of hot cocoa by the fireplace on a winter’s night. It’s being curled up on a plush chair in a soft, thick blanket immersed in a good book. It’s the soft strains of music against the smell of freshly baked cookies. This is hygge.

OPEN AIR CONCEPT
Natural light freely flows through these rooms thanks to the space’s open floorplan, innovative use of windows, and two large, windowed garage doors which can be raised along an entire wall. Two dozen windows at the top of the center wall filter sunlight into the sitting nook above the bedroom, as the glow of crystal chandeliers warms harder to reach corners. Lush green potted plants and green hued accents further enhance this open, natural look. Photography by: @tetamorephotographic

ARTICLE BY LAUREN BOCKA
Uplifting the Community One Smile at a Time Kimberly LaRussa hardly ever has a typical day. One day, she might be seen on television, surprising a child in need with a bedroom makeover. The next, she might be out in the community to raise funds for nonprofits, or you might see her advocating to help pups from local shelters find their forever homes. Surprising a child battling cancer with a baby kangaroo named Gumball at their front doorstep is far from typical, though. Still, the work she does for the community does share a common thread: it makes people smile, and it makes a difference. You don’t have to be a child for a baby kangaroo hopping around your living room to make you smile. Kimberly strives to bring smiles and make a difference through her company, Sweet Buffalo. Her work runs the gambit from writing uplifting news stories for her company’s website and making TV appearances, to surprising children in need, to running fundraisers and holding events in the community for nonprofit organizations. It all began with Kimberly’s passion for positive storytelling and her desire to share uplifting news in her community. With a background in broadcast journalism from Buffalo State College, Kimberly started off as an on-camera journalist and transitioned to writing for community newspapers as a reporter and editor. Of all the news stories she was assigned to, it was the uplifting ones she felt most passionately about. “I just always saw myself gravitating towards stories that made a difference,” says Kimberly. Sharing positive news stories in the surrounding community is what propelled Kimberly to create Sweet Buffalo. Starting as a blog six years ago, Sweet Buffalo has blossomed into a burgeoning company that aims to make a difference and provide help for the people (and canines) that need it the most. Whether it’s rallying around kids and families in need, helping animals to get adopted, or simply sharing a sweet story to make someone smile, Sweet Buffalo lives up to its hometown’s title: City of Good Neighbors. “I don’t think I could do what I do anywhere else,” Kimberly says, fondly noting the outpouring of support from the Buffalo 22 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
community. “They all step up, and that’s what I think makes the City of Good Neighbors in Western New York such a special place.” Originally from Florida, Kimberly made her home in Buffalo at the age of 19 and hasn’t left since. From its beginning, Sweet Buffalo has been spreading smiles. Shortly after launching the company, Kimberly took on a project called Sweet Buffalo Rocks for which people painted and hid rocks in the community for others to find in hopes of brightening their day. You might find a rock with the phrase “Have Hope” on it, or one that says, “You are somebody’s reason to smile today.” On the back of the rock, people were encouraged to find and follow Sweet Buffalo and Sweet Buffalo Rocks online. The project quickly caused a ripple effect, spreading the word about Kimberly’s company. What started five years ago hasn’t stopped, and Sweet Buffalo Rocks now has over 42,000 members on Facebook. It continues to grow as a nonprofit organization, raising money for children and families in need. You can find its rocks in other states, countries, and even Disney World! Not only does Sweet Buffalo focus on kids and families in need, but it also focuses on their canine counterparts. Kimberly started Sweet Buffalo to the Rescue to help rescue animals find their forever homes. Sweet Buffalo to the Rescue works with shelters and rescues in the surrounding area, using its social media platform to help animals get (cont.) adopted.

What’s next for Sweet Buffalo?
Kimberly says get ready for a summer filled with lots of furry friends! Sweet Buffalo to the Rescue has partnered with the West Seneca Police Dept. (WSPD) and Buddy Second Chance Rescue to help rescued dogs get adopted through an event called Bark, Walk, and Talk. Occurring as a weekly event throughout the summer and culminating in a celebration, Bark, Walk, and Talk will feature WSPD officers walking dogs in the park to meet people in hopes of them finding these pups forever homes. As always, Sweet Buffalo continues to uplift families in need and to make the Buffalo area shine. Kimberly credits the community for bringing to light these positive stories and creating change in the world. “This wouldn’t be possible if we weren’t in Western New York,” she says. “It’s the people that step up and help that are really making the difference.” When she’s not promoting heartwarming stories and helping kids and canines in need, Kimberly LaRussa works part-time at a local cat rescue and spends time with her 7-year old son, her husband, and her three dogs and cat.

Caralyn Mirand Koch is a curve model turned content creator in Buffalo, NY. When Caralyn was only 17 years old, she entered a plus sized teen modeling contest only to be discovered by Tyra Banks! Caralyn was the runner-up in the competition, which led to the jumpstart of her modeling career just before she headed off to college. Caralyn studied business and psychology at Clarkson University while working part-time for a modeling agency. As graduation drew closer, she knew she had to make a decision: go the traditional route and find a job with her degree or finally give full-time modeling a shot. Caralyn decided to pursue a full-time modeling career based in Buffalo from which she would travel to different cities to model. As her career began to take off, Caralyn realized the importance of having a social media presence, so she decided to begin building her own. As a curve model, Caralyn began connecting with women on social media about clothing, styling, accessories, comfort, and how clothes and undergarments fit. And it doesn’t stop there. Over the years, Caralyn has become a passionate advocate for properly fitting undergarments, which can be a real issue for women of all sizes. She coined #ProperlyFittingBraClub, which, believe it or not, began in her Instagram DMs! Working in the plus size modeling industry introduced Caralyn to how lingerie and undergarments should look and feel on a woman’s body. The community she’s formed with #ProperlyFittingBraClub allows women to come together, celebrate their bodies, and most importantly, share and celebrate their experiences in finding the best-fitting bras for their bodies! 30 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
Caralyn is now a full-time content creator, and she has maintained several modeling clients with whom she now works on social media campaigns. Her social media presence and blog help women learn more about their bodies as well as feel good and confident in their clothes! She works with brands to promote size inclusivity, which is something she is extremely passionate about. In fact, Caralyn is a selfproclaimed confidence crusader!
Buffalo Inspiration Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, Caralyn still calls the beautiful city home. The sense of community in Buffalo as well as the connectedness she feels are what prompt her to stay. Caralyn comments, “The people are what keep me here.” Plus, the weather during the spring and summer seasons is nice enough to forget about how long and cold the winters are!
Tips for Your Summer Trips As a model, content creator, and fashion and style guru, Caralyn offers some tips for packing and dressing for day/ weekend summer trips.

Dressing Tips Stick to one color palette/theme. Caralyn shares that she pulls all of her options out of her closet and lays them out. Then, she figures out what shoes, undergarments, and accessories go with each outfit. This makes the process of packing and planning outfits fun and easy! Wear dresses, rompers, and jumpsuits. If you like wearing any of these, summer is the perfect season to show them off. Each of these pieces are easy to travel with - it’s just one item to put on! Plus, they’re fun to pair with different kinds of shoes and accessories. Try on every single look before packing. Make sure you have all the right pieces by trying on every outfit you plan on wearing before packing them up. This will help ensure every outfit fits right and looks good. You don’t want to accidentally pack the wrong undergarments! You can even go a step further and take a picture of your pre-planned outfits laid out on your bed or in your closet so you can reference your ideas while you’re on your trip.
Packing Tips Bring items you can use more than once. This is one of the best tricks in the book. Smart packing means bringing as little as you can while still having everything you need - and bringing clothes, shoes, and accessories you can wear with different pieces is key! ... Use packing cubes. Caralyn shares, “I live and breathe by packing cubes!” Packing cubes are great because you’re able to organize all of your clothes, shoes, and other travel items easily. If you’re sharing a suitcase with a family member, you can easily split up your sections of the suitcase and find your items when you need to with the help of this handy organizational tool. Plus, if you accumulate clothes during your trip that will need to be washed once you’re home, you can keep those dirty clothes separate! ... Roll your clothes. Rolling your clothes when traveling will save you a ton of room! You can roll your clothes and store them in the packing cubes. ... Wearing your bulkiest layer and shoes while traveling. This tip will help you keep your suitcase lighter as you travel!

BUFFALO ROOTS BEHIND THE
NEXT GEN COLLECTIVE Growing up, Christian Wade knew that he wanted both music and sports to be a part of his life. Since the age of two, Christian has been playing the drums alongside his brother. As he grew older, his talents in rugby turned into a passion for football. Christian moved from London to join the Buffalo Bills in 2019, and he recently finished his third season in the NFL. As his career in professional football continues to develop, Christian doesn’t have any plans to stop being involved in the NFL and the Buffalo community. In fact, Christian’s talents in both music and sports, as well as his interest in the City of Buffalo, have stirred a new dream. Over the years, Christian has noticed a disconnect between the new and old music industries. With the development of new technology like streaming services and the use of drum machines instead of live bands, the music industry today is much different than in the past. Artists are having a difficult time demonstrating their talents. They’re even being noticed by the wrong people.
That’s when Christian had a vision for the City of Buffalo and all of the talented people within it. Buffalo has a rich history of producing musical talents such as Rick James, Grover Washington Jr., Brian McKnight, and the Goo Goo Dolls. However, Christian noticed that there weren’t many opportunities or resources for creatives, artists, and musicians in Buffalo to learn, practice, rehearse, and record their craft. As a musician himself, Christian understands just how hard it can be to find opportunities to be recognized. This opportunity gap inspired Christian, with the help of his brother and friends, to form the Next Gen Collective. The Next Gen Collective provides a headquarters in Buffalo where artists can come together, share their talents, and perform in front of big names in both the music and sports industries. With the right people in attendance, more talented Buffalo natives can be discovered and make professional careers out of their musical talent and creative hobbies!

Music and Sport Contacts The Next Gen Collective provides a platform for musicians, artists, and creators – whether one likes to draw graphics, take photographs, create videos, sing, dance, or something else – to showcase their gifts and talents in front of an audience that wants to see them succeed. With Christian’s background in the NFL and his brother’s professional music career, the Wade brothers have developed a long list of contacts in both 40 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
industries. In fact, Christian’s brother Adam ‘Smiley’ Wade (IG: @adamsmileywade) works with English musical stars like Jessie J and Liam Payne! These contacts help propel talented creatives into careers that will allow them to earn a living while doing what they love. Community Success The Next Gen Collective doesn’t only offer opportunities for talented individuals in Buffalo to showcase their talents and become discovered. It’s also a
successful business that provides jobs. Everyone involved is paid for their hard work, from the hosts to the waiters and waitresses, to the bartenders and the photographers! Christian notes that it is called a Collective for a reason. The space was developed so everyone can enjoy the shared experience together. The atmosphere of music, food, drink, people, and community keeps everyone motivated and excited throughout the entirety of each event.
To learn more about the Next Gen Collective, follow them on Instagram & Twitter @thenextgenco
Performers can be noticed by key people in both the music and sports industries. When famous individuals are present – whether it be a football star or a musician – there’s a sense of important eyes on you, which opens up more opportunities for everyone involved. Ever since Christian moved to join the NFL in 2019, he’s loved living in Buffalo. With numerous food and drink options, shopping, bar life, Woodlawn Beach, and beautiful views, Christian only hopes to add to the Buffalo experience.
Events & What’s Next The Next Gen Collective officially started in September 2021, and their first event was at Vice. Since then, they have held several events, one in October, one in November for a Thanksgiving special, and one in December at Sahlen Field for a Christmas special. After taking a short break, an event was held in March to celebrate heroes, which recognized some of the worldrenowned musicians, artists, and the people of Buffalo in a tribute night! Now, the Collective is
taking a break as they prepare for a relaunch of new events starting in August and September 2022. Christian hopes to plan a talent show to highlight all of the talent that Buffalo has to offer in a healthy competition among musical creatives and bring in guest artists and judges for this event! And there is much more to come in the near future.

If you were to ask the average Buffalo resident to name a landmark in Erie County, most people would name somewhere in the city. While the city does contain many historical landmarks, the rest of Erie County also has plenty of its own. Evan Wright, who is the Community and Academic Engagement Manager at the Castellani Art Museum, spent three year as Director of Operations for the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center and currently works with the Historic Preservation Commission for the City of Niagara Falls. Wright recommends several visit-worthy historic locations around Buffalo. Here are five to explore!

E VA 1. DAS HAUS MUSEUM, NIAGARA FALLS Celebrating the early Prussian immigrants who settled, Das Haus Museum in Niagara Falls is part of the Historical Society of North German Settlements in Western New York. In the 1840s, hundreds of Prussian Lutherans settled what was then the Niagara frontier. An original 1843 cabin, part of Das Haus remains preserved as part of the museum complex. Visit Das Haus May through October on Sundays from 2pm to 4pm. There is no charge for visiting; however, a donation is encouraged. Guided tours are available upon special arrangement. Please contact (716) 795-2890 to schedule your tour. 2. ROYCROFT MUSEUM, EAST AURORA This museum is a tribute Elbert Hubbard, who founded one of the most successful Arts and Crafts communities in the country on the museum site. The museum was donated to the Aurora Historical Society in 1985 by Gladys Schiedemantel, Elbert’s wife. The building contains a vast array of books, furniture, and oil paintings, all in the Arts and Crafts tradition. All tours must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children, and all children under 12 years old are free. 3. BUFFALO NIAGARA HISTORICAL VILLAGE, AMHERST This historical village will take visitors on a journey back in time to life in the Buffalo area in the 1800s. Established in 1972 by the Town of Amherst, the village moved to the current 35 acre site in 1976. The village contains over 40,000 artifacts, the Niederlander Research Library, and exhibits that rotate throughout the summer. The museum is open every year from May to October, and admission is $10 for adults and $6 for children.

4. GRAYCLIFF, DERBY This historic house, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and located on Lake Erie in the town of Derby, is a gem among the numerous buildings designed by Lloyd Wright in the Buffalo area. Graycliff was built over a five-year period, and it was originally intended to be the summer home for Buffalo entrepreneur Darwin Martin and his wife, Isabelle. The couple lived there until 1943, and it was passed down to a group of Roman Catholic teachers and fell into disrepair. In 1997, the Graycliff Conservancy bought the house, restored it to its original condition, and opened the house to the public. The conservancy still owns the house, and gives tours from 10am to 4pm every day except Wednesday. 5. NIAGARA FALLS UNDERGROUND RAILROAD HISTORIC CENTER, NIAGARA FALLS Opened in 2018, the NFURHC gives visitors a historical perspective on the role that the Niagara Falls and Buffalo area had in the emancipation of African Americans. The center contains many stories of how runaway slaves traveling on the Underground Railroad would go through Niagara Falls and would then escape via boat towards Canada and freedom. This is told through guided tours of the center and permanent exhibits located in the center. Located in the 1863 U.S. Customs House next to the Niagara Falls Amtrak station, the center opened in 2018 after 11 years of planning by many residents of the Greater Niagara Falls area, some of whom now work in the historic center. The center is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10am to 5 pm. It costs $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, students and those with military ID, and $6 for children 6-12. Children 5 and under are free. Visit the center’s website, www.niagarafallsundergroundrailroad.org, for more about the center.
