The sun is out, and the open air is calling. Are your outdoor concrete spaces ready? Whether you have a concrete garage, porch, pao, walkway, or all of the above, it’s me to get entertainment ready. Has your concrete started cracking or peeling? Are you frustrated with epoxy coangs which must frequently be replaced due to damage? Local, family-owned and operated Apollo Concrete Coangs can transform your damaged or lackluster concrete into an eye-catching feature with a strong, aracve polyurea-polyasparc topcoat. In just one day, your concrete can go from vulnerable, cold, and dull to durable, vibrant, and excing!

What is Polyurea-Polyasparc Coang? Polyurea-polyasparc material is an impenetrable defense against the elements. Concrete is an unfinished, porous material that will wear and crack if le untreated. Unlike epoxies which simply sit on top of concrete, polyurea-polyasparc bonds with concrete and cures it, using the moisture content of the concrete to “grow roots” beyond the surface. Thanks to this bond, pulyurea-polyasparc does not peel, blister or fade like epoxy and DIY coangs.

“Our process uses the Penntek Coang System, a recognized leader in innovave concrete sealers and coangs. The Penntek Coang System offers the highest standards in performance and longevity, providing you with the highest quality concrete floor repair,” says Apollo Concrete owner, Russell Bickert Jr. The latest Polyurea-Polyasparc product features low odor and even more durability! Quickly drying and curing, a surface is completely ready-to-use aer only 24 hours! With an Apollo surface, your outdoor spring cleaning and post-party cleanup become a breeze! Simply spray the surface down with a hose for surfaces that look like new and are ready for warm weather enjoyment. In fact, the product is so resilient, it comes with a 15-year warranty. This industrial product is making quite a splash both in the commercial and residenal markets with its rubberized finish and highly durable surface. With its high quality and variety of colors, polyurea-polyasparc coangs are ideal for concrete garage floors, basement floors, paos, porches, and even pool decks. Add an addional layer of safety to your pool this summer with Apollo’s an-slip element. Apollo Concrete Coangs is pleased to offer coangs specifically enhanced for pool decks. Our an-slip element, added directly to the Penntek Coang System topcoat, provides you with an extra level of safety and security.

O N E DAY G A R A G E F LO O R S Russ & Joy Answer Your Flooring Quesons! Are Apollo floors easy to clean? Yes! It is smooth and abrasion resistant. It is an industrial product. If you get something like oil or most chemicals on its surface, you can simply wash it off with ease. ... What if my concrete floor has cracks? Don’t worry! We are often able to make repairs to concrete floors to create a smooth surface before putting the coating on. You usually will not need to replace your concrete floor first, saving you money! ...

A Local Family Business Originally established as a drywall business, family-owned and operated Apollo Concrete Coangs was founded by owner Russell Bickert Jr.’s father in 1976 and has been serving Western New York for 45 years. In 2002, Apollo established its successful painng division. Aer adding its Apollo Concrete Coangs division in 2004, Russell Bickert Jr. took over leadership of Apollo when his father rered in 2008 and the company moved away from drywall and painng, ulmately transioning completely to the superior Penntek polyurea-polyasparc in 2014. Now, Apollo completes several hundred floors each year. “Our long history in the area also means we are well aware that a WNY concrete floor must be constructed to sustain the salt exposure present in the extreme winter weather and must also contain UV protecon for the summer months. In addion, it should be chemically resistant, stain-resistant, and made of an-slip materials,” says Russell. Schedule your outdoor coang applicaon today as we are already booking quickly and fall weather condions may put an early end to our season.

Photo Worthy Results! Customers are loving their new Apollo floors! Joy Bickert, Bickert’s wife, Office Manager at Apollo, says that people are posng photos of their new Apollo floors with capons like “What a difference a day makes!”

Is salt a concern? Once you have locked in your concrete with our coating, it is not going to deteriorate anymore. Salt does not affect the polyaspartic topcoat and will just sit on the surface until you wash it away. ... What about epoxy coangs? An epoxy coating may be a little less expensive, but they do not last long, take longer to install, and become brittle and peel over time. Polyurea-polyaspartic is four times the strength of epoxy and lasts a lot longer due to its adhesion rates and its durability through New York freezes and thaws as well as the variations in our hydrostatic table. It also does not yellow. We combine superior Penntek products with proper preparation and close attention to quality. Russ & Joy with their pup, Eleanor!

Apollo Concrete Coangs add an aracve style element to your outdoor space and can be color coordinated to match your unique aesthec choices. Durable Penntek polyurea-polyasparc coangs come in 30 standard color opons with the ability to create custom color combinaons to suit all tastes and styles. With guaranteed UV stability, you can rely on your coang to never fade or yellow. The Penntek distributor and cerfied dealer for Western and Upstate New York, Apollo has put down roots in Rochester, led by Joy Bickert, Ma Prieur (Vice President), and Carl Szydlowski (Director of Operaons). Apollo has the coang experience, experse, and professionalism you need for your concrete surface.

Once described as “a magical city to explore by bicycle,” Buffalo is home to a community of bicyclists and well-known trails that are perfect to explore during spring and summer months, (if not year-round). One such community, “Teen Treks,” is a non-profit organization created to help teens gain independence and valuable life skills while enjoying cycling. Teen Treks is not like any other cycling group you may have heard of in recent years. They focus on bicycling long distance tours through North America and Europe. While teens are always under the supervision of two group leaders, they can explore new destinations and develop problem-solving skills as an integral part of a team. According to group leader Ben Ingalls, “The final destination is not the highlight;

22 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo

every day is sort of a crazy adventure. You don’t really know what you’re getting yourself into. Teen Treks was good for me because it exposed me to a lot.” Ben has led with Teen Treks for two different trips. “I have only done two trips, and the first trip that I did was from NYC to Montréal. The second trip I did was from Boston to Acadia National Park in Maine.” Adolescents are known to frequently grapple with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety; however, in the age of Covid, these issues have become magnified. “Mental health challenges in children, adolescents, and young adults are real and widespread. Even before the pandemic, an alarming number of young people struggled with feelings of helplessness, depression, and thoughts of suicide — and rates have increased over the past decade,” said Surgeon General Vivek Murthy in December 2021. “The COVID-19 pandemic further altered their experiences at home, school, and

in the community, and the effect on their mental health has been devastating. The future well-being of our country depends on how we support and invest in the next generation.” For this reason and many others, Teen Treks provides a supportive mechanism to get teenagers and young people engaged in their local community, gaining new friendships and learning important life strategies beyond the classroom. Young people never know where their path might take them on a tour.

“There are all different kind of bicycle groups. That’s what’s cool about a bike. It just makes everything more accessible. You can always hop off and investigate. That’s what I like about traveling: you are sort of more intimately engaging with your surroundings more than any other transportation,” adds Ben. He also states, “Buffalo has a pretty solid bike-centric community, whether more familyoriented or more individual based.” Connecting both on road and off road, these trails are both historical and diverse. First, the Hudson Green Valley Trail connects New York City to Albany. Secondly, the Champlain Valley Trail connects Albany to the Canadian border, and thirdly, the Erie Canalway Trail connects Buffalo to Albany.

For a bit of local culture, cyclists may wish to explore Buffalo’s unique “East Side Loop” cycling trail. Known for having roots in the Underground Railroad as well as a key role in American Jazz history, this trail features several points of interest. Visit the Friendship Baptist Church which provided a formative start for a young Aretha Franklin. While it may not be common knowledge, Franklin moved to Buffalo as a young child from Tennessee. Aretha’s Father, CL Franklin was a pastor at the church during the family’s time in WNY. It wasn’t long before churchgoers became aware of Franklin’s powerful voice, and from there the rest is musical history. Although her family relocated to Detroit, Michigan, the Queen City will always hold an irreplaceable spot in the history of the Queen of Soul.

Stop by the history-making Iroquois Brewing Company, also featured along the East Side Loop. Nicknamed “the Buffalo of Yesteryear,” this brewery is Buffalo’s oldest brewery, even surviving Prohibition Era times. While its last year in business was 1970, the Iroquois Brewing Company introduced the Tomahawk Ale, a local beverage still very popular today. There has never been a better time to get out and discover Buffalo. Cycling is an up close and personal way to connect with nature as well as the city’s remarkable history and culture. The Queen City represents a unique blend of both past and present with endless possibilities of discovery and an escape from the ordinary.

KIKO THE CORGI // LOCAL DOG-LOVING SPOTS // DOG PARK ETIQUETTE TIPS

30 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo

BY A M A N DA D UD EK

MeeT KIKo,

Buffalo’s Most Popular Corgi Dog mom and Corgi fan, Aryn Kraus had wanted a Corgi ever since grade school. (Cowboy Bebop, anyone?) So, Aryn saved up her money, finished school, and began doing her research. “Corgis are hard to find,” says Aryn. “We found a little place out in Cobbleskill and went to pick him up. I remember it like it was yesterday. He was like this little, fluffy hamster; his ears weren’t even up yet. He was well worth the wait!”

| What’s in a Name? Aryn and her husband Ryan are huge Bills fans, (Go, Buffalo!) so naturally, their new puppy needed a name to match. “I got to pick out the dog, so my husband got to pick out the name. He named him Kiko after Kiko Alonzo, a Buffalo linebacker at the time.” The name instantly took. “The breeder said, ‘Oh, a linebacker…yes, that is going to work for him. It’s perfect.’ Kiko has that Napoleon, littledog-thinks-he’s-a-big-dog syndrome. I have had other dogs, but these Corgis are so funny with their huge personalities!” Thin Man Brewery Buffalo | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 31

| Stepping Out As Kiko’s social media presence has grown, he has started to be recognized when he goes out around the Buffalo area. People “person” Kiko is loving every minute of it! “Kiko loves going out, and anytime he sees a person, he will lay on the ground mid-walk until someone comes up and pets him. He is a blast to take anywhere!” And everywhere they go, people love him! “We usually hear happy screams from people walking and even people passing by in their cars. Since we have built up his Instagram, people call him out by name: ‘it’s Kiko!’ Our friends think it’s wild! People will approach us when we go out to eat, and our friends just shake their heads. They can’t believe people know our dog!” Aryn still can’t quite believe it herself. “I still remember the first time I heard someone say, ‘Oh my God, it’s Kiko!’ It just got bigger and bigger. I never thought in a million years our dog would be a celebrity, but I am happy to share him. Kiko has a lot of love and fluff to give!”

TAIL-WAGGIN’ SUMMER

| Good morning, Kiko! Even as a puppy, Kiko’s fun-loving personality began shining through. Now, seven years later, grownup Kiko has his morning routine, and it’s clear he’s a mama’s boy! “Every morning, Kiko jumps from his bed onto our bed. Then, he only wakes up my husband. He will smother him with his floof and make little noises so that Ryan will take him out and feed him. Immediately afterward, Kiko comes back upstairs and cuddles with me. We never taught him this. It’s just something he decided on his own!”

| (Posh) Dog Days Although he loves his fenced in yard and a game of tug, Aryn says Kiko spends his days lounging, and if we’re honest, who wouldn’t? “He is always lounging on his back with his paws up! He loves staring out the window, too. I blame our UPS drivers for always leaving him a treat. They are big Kiko fans!” To Kiko, bath time is serious business not to be taken lightly, but afterwards…“He is excited to get in the tub. As soon as he gets in, he gets this very serious, stern look about him, but the moment he gets out of the tub, he is off doing zoomies around the house. He loves running and rolling around, getting dried off, and he loves the hairdryer even more!” Of course, such busy days require lots of good rest. “Around 9 or 10 o’clock, Kiko will stand at the bottom of our stairs as if to say, Mom! Dad! Can we go up? It’s bedtime! Then, he will go up the stairs one stair at a time, as if he has just had the hardest day ever. Sometimes, if he has been playing, he will even want to be carried up the stairs! Then, he will curl up in his little bed, and within minutes, we will hear him snoring. It is so dramatic!”

| Good Boy! Not only does Kiko have looks and popularity, but he’s all heart, too. This loving, fluffy Corgi is also a volunteer, inspired by fellow local Instagram canine, Carlo the Pibble (@carlo_the_pibble). “We follow Carlo, who is a local therapy dog. I thought, ‘How fun would that be! Kiko has so much love to give.’ I started researching classes and the certification requirements. We had done behavior classes with Kiko when he was a puppy, and he is so well-behaved.” Now, Kiko is a certified therapy dog. He works with the SPCA Paws for Love program, and often volunteers at the Buffalo/Niagara International Airport, among other places and events. Aryn couldn’t be more proud.

Niagara Falls

“It has been so awesome to see Kiko loved by all these people. He enjoys it, as well, and we get to meet so many different types of people. Kiko has so much love to give, and he is so gentle. Kiko is the best!”

TIPS

Etiquette @ the dog Park

CREATED + PRINTED JUST FOR YOU

Make everyone happy dance!

BY KAITLIN DONNAN With the weather finally getting nicer it’s time to get out and enjoy the sunshine, and there’s no reason our four-legged friends shouldn’t join us! Spending an afternoon at one of the many local dog parks here in Western New York sounds like a great way to work out some pent up energy, but there are a few important things to keep in mind before heading out. Most dog parks come with their own ordinances all meant to keep things safe yet fun for all visitors. Be sure to check out the specifics of any park before you go! In the meantime, we’ll cover some of the basics below. Make sure Fido is all up-to-date on vaccinations. Always make sure your pup wears a collar! This is for safety and identification in case they wander a bit too far or a gate gets left open. Ensure your dog is properly socialized. Owners should speak with one another first before introducing their respective dogs. Keep an eye on your dog. While the idea to let them run around loose might be a fun one, make sure to pay attention to where they are at all times.

In v it e s st a r ti n g a t ju st $ .4 6 !

Clean up after your canine! Sometimes a dog’s gotta do what a dog’s gotta do, but that waste shouldn’t get left behind. Bring water! With all of that running around, your dog is sure to work up a thirst! Keep them hydrated by bringing a small water bowl. Coming back for a drink also encourages your dog to check in with you. Know your dog. You know your pooch best of all, so you know their temperament or when they’re uncomfortable. If your dog appears tense, has a tucked tail, or displays any fear, it might be a good idea to take a break and leave for a bit. Dog parks aren’t for every dog, and it’s best to work with the comfort level of your pooch!

NO CLUTTER

“I do much less fussing at the kids now that the remodel is done,” Shawna says. Everything has a space to go and they planned for that when doing their remodel– even a brush in the landing zone to brush their kids’ hair while eating breakfast. It’s a necessity for a family with daughters. Each child has their own “dumping” space where they can quickly place their coats, shoes, and backpack.

LOCAL DREAM HOME Built in 1847, this home wasn’t functional for a local family of 6. With so much time spent at home, they needed a fresh start. Working with trusted professionals, Shawna and her family set out to create their dream space. She shared her favorite home updates, top tips, and ideas for people looking to remodel with Home Publications. Buffalo | THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 49

FOR THE HOME

OLD WITH NEW

Although they opted to get rid of their kitchen table that didn’t fit their family comfortably, they have some unique antique pieces around their house. From the barn beam fireplace mantle to Shawna’s old dresser as storage in their living room, mixing the old pieces with new ones brings new life into their space.

C R E AT E ZO N E S

The zone method is used to divide the kitchen layout by function and to provide you with everything needed for a specific task. Shawna said, “Everything now has its own area: the breakfast drawer, the table setting cabinets, baking/cooking zones, and dog supply drawer.” Our personal favorite was their AM & PM cupboards. (AM was filled with coffee, teas, and mugs, whereas PM displayed stemware, beer mugs & their favorite spirits!)

D O W H AT YO U LO V E

When asked why she picked the green theme, she said “Green is my favorite color.” And after all, what other reason is there to do something aside from it being something you love?
