Rachael Burbules and her niece, Kamryn, enjoying a facial and laughs by her new Bath Fitter soaker tub!
My bathroom was in trouble. The bath area featured fiberglass walls in a dingy, had-been-cream color. They were a nightmare to clean, and my steel tub, with its tired whitish hue, was not much better. I needed a change that wouldn’t break the budget or tie up my bathroom for days, and I needed it now. The moment our Bath Fitter consultant came to my home, I knew I had made the right decision. My consultation was free, no obligation to buy, and the sales consultant gave me his complete attention and all the time I needed. I had already tested several bath options on their Design Your Own Bath website, but now, I was designing my own bath. My consultant carefully measured my bath space, noting areas which would need to be repaired. I opted for a new soaker tub option rather than a liner over my existing tub, especially since Bath Fitter would remove all trash and debris. After selecting a gleaming white color, deciding how many bath shelves I would like, and picking out my wall design, I was ready for my bathroom makeover. The Bath Fitter vans arrived just as I was sipping my morning coffee. Before even entering my home, they covered their shoes and rolled out the blue carpet, careful not to disturb anything. They removed my existing wall material, steel tub, and all debris quickly and completely. Then, they set to work preparing the space.

After our plumber and installers prepared the area, they carried in my custom, acrylic bath. Using a heating process, they formed the flexible acrylic wall to the bath area. It fit perfectly, one piece snug and smooth. No more cleaning cracks, crevices, grout, and tough corners! Although I checked on my bathroom progress a few times throughout the day, as my bathroom makeover neared completion, I was asked to wait until they finished for the “big reveal.” When I finally entered my bathroom, I had the total “wow moment,” they promised. My new bath looked incredible, seamlessly fitting into my existing space as if nothing had been touched. The crew had completely removed my old tub and walls; there wasn’t even a coating of dust. My bath had been completely renovated–and thus my bathroom transformed–in one day! Three years later and I am still in love with my Bath Fitter bath. It still looks brand-new, and it is so easy to clean. A simple wipe down with a general cleaner and occasionally soaking the tub with water and Dawn dish soap is all it has needed. Maintenance is not a worry either. Bath Fitter’s lifetime warranty means that I can call or go on an online chat for assistance with my bath anytime, 24/7, even if it is something as simple as adjusting my bath doors. My only regret is that I didn’t do this sooner. Having worked for Bath Fitter as the Director of Marketing for the past eight years, I knew about our high-quality products and excellence in customer service, but now, I have experienced them for myself. My bathroom looks so much brighter with my Bath Fitter bath, and they went above and beyond to create a beautiful feature that will last a lifetime. It has really made such a difference, transforming my bathroom into a space I actually enjoy!
Bath Fitter LOVE Joe A. & Dan were in and out in under 5 hours. A couple of real nice guys and hardworking. They did an absolutely beautiful job, and I’m very pleased. Thanks again guys! – Joanne W., Cheektowaga Bath Fitters (Dylan and Andy) did an amazing job transforming our bathroom. We went from the standard tub and old plastic tile to an amazing walk-in shower with beautiful patterned walls, raindrop glass doors and wainscoting on the other walls. They even hung our towel racks for us and a new shower head. It looks AMAZING. Their workmanship really shows. We will be enjoying our new bathroom for years to come. Thank you, Dylan and Andy and Bath Fitters! – Hunter V., Buffalo We couldn’t be happier with our Bath Fitter installation! We were lucky enough to have 2 installers… and the job was completed in under 4 hours! Joe L. and Chuck did an excellent job-they were on time, neat, professional employees who cleaned up so well they left no trace of their work.... except for a new, beautiful shower installation! We would not hesitate to recommend this company! – Maria D., Lockport

parkhurst “Together, the boots are made using time-honored, old-school traditions of fine taste, effortless style, superior materials, and impeccable craftsmanship. Parkhurst Brand, along with Artisan Boot and Shoe, create upscale footwear meant to last for decades.” Buffalo’s Parkhurst Brand men’s boots are the epitome of sophistication and American craftsmanship. After searching for the perfect causal men’s dress boot, founder Andrew Svisco, then a 27-year-old stock trading analyst working 70+ hour weeks, found himself dissatisfied with the inexpensive yet bulky work boots as well as the more expensive boots available. So, working with Artisan Boot and Shoe (then P.W. Minor) in Batavia, Svisco launched Parkhurst Brand to design and manufacture highquality, handmade men’s boots, selling them at a much lower cost than comparable pricey brands. Parkhurst Brand sources its leathers from world famous tanneries, selecting leather from free-range cattle in Nebraska and similar sources. This fine leather is then tanned using more environmentally conscious vegetable dyes to create unique and luxurious colors. “These tanneries such as Horween and C.F Stead produce some of the most gorgeous leathers in the world,”
stated Svisco. “Parkhurst Brand and Artisan Boot and Shoe bring together the high-quality components found in near $500+ boots to create footwear for $250-$340, a fraction of the price.” As inspiration, Svisco credits his grandfather, a local steel worker challenged to provide for his family when New York steel companies began closing down. “My business truly produces its footwear in my own backyard, supporting the American supply chain as much as possible,” he said. “My grandfather took pride in giving an honest day’s work to put food on the table for his family. Parkhurst Brand’s philosophy lives on in his memory.” Svisco praises Artisan Boot & Shoe in Batavia for its part in Parkhurst Brand’s success. “They began working with me when my brand was unheard of and just beginning. Their faith in me has taken Parkhurst Brand to the next level. There is no one I would rather work with than them,” he said.

HOME DESIGNS By Kaitlin Donnan
If there was ever a time to revamp and revitalize our living spaces, it’s Spring 2021. With tumultuous 2020 finally (finally!) over, we might have seen more of our living rooms than we ever thought we would. Maybe it’s high time to tackle some redesign projects and make our homes spaces we want to be in, rather than have to be in.
THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM |Buffalo 9
This spring, expect to see design trends rolling out with bold patterns, high contrast, texture, and overall coziness. Spring is the perfect time for a refresh, and we love the look of combining unique colors and patterns built around your equally unique personality. Coastal textures give the appeal of natural wood, as
well as the bright colors we associate with the season. If the coast isn’t what you’re looking for, toss in a mix of metallics or geometrics, and play with color gradation. These trends are best used in low doses (think less is more!). Allow for a splash of color and conversation pieces. Even something as simple as a new throw pillow for the couch or replacing a lamp on a nightstand can go a long way!
In December 2020 Pantone announced the Colors of the Year for 2021 are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (a lively yellow). Not only do these colors pair nicely together and balance one another out, but consider what they’re often associated with: gray is a neutral color often tied with being conservative and sophisticated, and the luminous yellow is tied with happiness and enlightenment, and—you guessed it—spring! If redecorating brings color, color and more color to mind, Pantone offers some suggestions for playing with those colors, whether you are planning to paint an accent wall or all four! Blues and greens can be fresh, invigorating, and dramatic. When used in kitchen cabinetry, these hues stand out boldly and can create quite the high-impact statement. (While the usual advice is to not go overboard, consider what personally appeals to you and your personality!)
Favor warmer hues? Yellows and oranges contrast with cool tones and add brightness and energy. (The 2021 Color of the Year Illuminating has even been called “an optimistic yellow, offering the promise of a sunny day.”) Experimenting with these hues adds pops of color that do well when paired with earth tones, giving you that feeling of spring, even when the weather is anything but.

Spring blossoms, too, meet us with an array of colors: blue skies, pale green grass and multicolored perennials making their comeback. Tulips and pansies add their pinks and purples which can create beautiful bursts of color in your home! These vivid and exciting colors are beautiful accent pieces that can add some striking and inviting character to your living room.
Play with the contrast of colors! Find what is not only
appealing to the eye, but to your tastes and your home. Can’t decide on one? Try out shibori, a trend we’re expecting to see more of this spring as it focuses on more washed-out dyes and blends—think of a take on tie-dye that isn’t quite so bold or psychedelic. Lastly, the scheme of any room can always be tied together with some grounding neutral tones. Earthy tones create a sense of comfort and relaxation in the home. Versatile as they are, these colors never go out of style. Those bursts of color, whether they’re purple or blue, pink or yellow, emerge more when combined with muted beiges or even grays. Whatever trends you opt for, be sure to choose the ones that best catch your eye and showcase your personality!

BREAKING A (METAPHORICAL) LEG WITH
ANTHONY ALCOCER
With a slew of regulations and mandates, the live theatre scene has looked a little different in Buffalo this year. Not to be discouraged, we sat down with Buffalonian Anthony Alcocer to reminisce about the theatre, what we most look forward to when we can return to it in full capacity, and some of his tips and tricks for those looking to break into the scene themselves! Anthony is a Buffalo-based theatre actor. As COVID regulations slowly lift, he is most looking forward to “acting in and seeing plays, musicals, opera, symphonies, sports, concerts, people, dogs—anything!” as well as watching the Buffalo theatre and all aspects of arts and culture everywhere begin the process of truly thriving once more. He currently resides in Buffalo with his wife, Katie (Irish Classical Theatre Co. Artistic Director), and their son, Santiago. 12 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
How did you get started in acting? Was there anything in particular that drew you in? I was three years old when I was in my first play, and ever since I really can’t remember a sustained period of time when I wasn’t acting on stage. The love of acting and being on stage was gifted to me through my older brothers, and then in turn, when I grew older, I shared that passion with my two younger (and more talented) siblings. I saw how much fun the older two were having—they were both naturals. I even got to play brothers onstage with one and have shared the stage with all my siblings. I’ll be frank, however, and say I am the one in the family who found the process of the work, the craft, practicing daily, rehearsing tirelessly, and trying to build characters from the page to be the most fun. I believe that’s what separated me from my talented and charming siblings. They all have a fondness and great enjoyment for theatre still, but I pursued my career with abandon as I continued to grow. Do you have a method you go by when tackling a new role? I was trained extensively in the Stanislavski Method (also called “the art of experiencing”) wherein I was tasked with turning psychology into behavior. I believe a good actor is simply the facilitator of the director’s interpretation of the author’s intent. In this, I am willing to try and fail as many times as my director will allow, as well as receive as much criticism from them as necessary in order to get where we need to go together. I also imagine myself as a reactor more than anything, and I try my utmost to be as open and as available to my scene partners as I can. When I think about acting, I recall when I first heard a virtuoso playing Vivaldi: for a few moments I wondered, “Is the player putting the music into the violin, or pulling it out from the violin?” The same, I think, is true for my process; the actor must be both the created character and the intention of the author, simultaneously. What are some of your favorite parts of the Buffalo theatre scene? “There’s no people like show people.” Absolutely my favorite aspect of the scene we enjoy in our fair city are the very people that make our business so grand! It did not take a pandemic to help me realize this, but it certainly has highlighted just how very important the community is to me. When we gather on Main St. downtown and pack in scores of talented professionals for Curtain Up and the Artie Awards to mark the beginning and end to each season; or when we gather for our opening night parties and fundraisers, and most of all, when we share in each other’s success at Matinee Bar, it is the fondness, respect and love that I cherish.
Do you have any particularly fond memories of acting, or is there a show/role you would return to if you could? I was in school at Florida State and getting frustrated that I wasn’t winning roles that had as much responsibility as I’d like. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was simply a selfish and lazy actor with some raw talent just coasting by and had yet to work very hard on anything difficult. Then I was given a chance to play Jacques Roux in Marat/Sade by Shaffer. The director put me through a grueling process of physical and psychological exercises to see how in-depth I wanted to go. That process turned out to be an enormous breakthrough for me. Everything started to click from the Method training; I disappeared into my character, and even my own mother did not recognize me until she looked in the program at intermission. From then on, I decided, it’s about the character and the story, it’s not about me at all. Is there a character you’d love to play but haven’t gotten the chance to yet? Both of these roles are so iconic, so I would make a thorough attempt to breathe new life into them, not just put on a pageant show. For a straight play, I would really like to take a shot at Stanley Kowalski. Williams gave us one of the greatest and yet most difficult male roles of the 20th century. I believe with my brand of research, energy, thoughtfulness, and diligence, I could shape a Stanley who is less about overpowering an audience, and more about witnessing battered pride in themselves. For musical theatre, I have been aching to appear as The Emcee since I first heard Cabaret on record. It is one of the ultimate roles for a chameleon actor, just begging to be formed and shaped in every which way. Any advice you have for aspiring actors, or those who have considered getting into the craft? If there is something else you want to do, go do that. Otherwise, “Stay in the here and now.” (Easier said than done!) Leaving baggage at the door is one thing, but it’s entirely different to completely get out of yourself so honestly and unselfishly that you abandon your own psychology and begin to facilitate someone else’s. “A good actor is simply the facilitator of the director’s interpretation of the author’s intent.” — this may remind an actor of how they fit in the grand scheme. For me, it gives courage to try anything once, a thirst for guidance, and energy to grind whatever grist the mill requires in order to give my absolute all.

Protect
Let’s start with the basics. The healthiest possible skin is not going to come from an expensive night cream, but from the things we hear over and over again that all too easily get lost in our daily habits. We all know how important it is to protect our skin from the sun, however, this shouldn’t just be on Summer days when we’re expecting to be outside a lot. It’s a great idea to make sunscreen a part of your daily routine no matter what time of year it is. There are so many great products out there that incorporate SPF into moisturizers and makeup and won’t make you feel like you’ve got a face full of thick cream all day long.
Hydrate
Secondly, the amount of water we intake will directly affect the way our skin looks and feels on a daily basis. Keeping a bottle next to you at all times is a great reminder to stay up on your hydration throughout the day. If you’re someone who really has trouble remembering to hydrate, try reusable bottles with markers telling you where you should be on your consumption at each hour!
Clean
Whether you’re the kind of person who wears a face full of makeup on a daily basis or who likes to keep it a little more simple, it’s crucial to go to bed with a clean face every night. When you cleanse your face, not only are you removing products, but you’re also getting rid of all the impurities it has taken on throughout the day. This will also give you a fresh palate for your skin to soak up any products that may be part of your nighttime routine! It’s also a great idea to find something that will help exfoliate your skin at least a couple of times a week.
In need of some skincare that won’t break the bank? Moisturize
There’s nothing more irritating than having dry skin or chapped lips. The colder months especially can really do a number on our skin, which is why everyone should find a good moisturizer to use both morning and night. The neck is a part of the body that often gets overlooked when it comes to skincare, so be sure to apply your moisturizer to this area as well! Keeping a travel size lotion on you throughout the day can be really helpful. It’s also a great idea to use some sort of hydrating face spray that can refresh and perk up your skin when it’s feeling dull and dry. If your skin is feeling in need of a mid-week pick-me-up, using some sort of face mask once a week is an excellent way to hydrate and give yourself a moment of pampering!
Try this mask that includes just four basic ingredients to nourish your skin and give you a healthy looking glow. In a bowl mix ½ mashed banana, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp orange juice and ½ tsp turmeric. Leave on for 15-20 minutes, rinse and moisturize afterwards. This DIY mask is super easy and will leave your skin feeling alive and glowing!

TIPS TO HELP MEN
LOOK THEIR BEST Though television commercials might give the impression that beauty and grooming concerns are exclusive to women, men like to look good, too. While many men don’t spend as much money on beauty and grooming products as women, that does not mean they aren’t equally as concerned about their appearances as women. Men who aren’t ready to go gray but are anyway can find products designed specifically for men who want to conceal their silver locks. Avoid dyes that might bleach all hair, including those that are not gray, opting instead for a product that tints gray hairs and still boast their natural colors. Especially since COVID-19, the beard boom has continued, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.
20 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary. Men are concerned about their appearances just like women are. There are many simple ways for men to address their appearance so they look and feel better.

Pain is usually the first warning sign that something is wrong, but sometimes, the warning signs are more subtle.
Bialek Chiropractic Can Help Chiropractic care seeks to correct subluxations which are subtle misalignments of the spinal column or any of the bones which make up the pelvis. These subluxations can interfere with how your brain and body communicate, ultimately leading to an interference in your body’s ability to function optimally. Subluxations can occur during fetal development, during the birth process, or as a result of physical, chemical or emotional stress, injuries and accidents. By correcting subluxations and restoring spinal balance, chiropractic care helps the body heal itself. Dr. Bialek acknowledges your body’s infinite healing potential from the inside out, applying gentle spinal adjustments to remove interference to the system that controls healing, thereby allowing you to do what you are designed to do naturally: heal! Chiropractic care offers a safe, effective, drug-free, surgery-free alternative. Dr. Bialek is Webster Technique Certified with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and an Associate Clinical Instructor for Activator Methods.

We tailor our recommendations to your specific health needs, rather than basing them on what might work for someone else you know. WITH BUFFALO COMMUNITY FRIDGE
Q& A
We caught up with Fridge founder, Jessie Reardon, to find out what this unique outreach is all about!
30 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
Why do you love Buffalo?
One word – BuffaLOVE. We are called the City of Good Neighbors for a reason. When the Fridge first hit the streets, I was nervous it wasn’t going to be accepted or taken care of. Within the first few hours, neighbors were helping secure the fridge in our new spot, cleaning the surrounding area, and spreading the word. Now, it is a part of the community!
What is the Fridge all about?
The Buffalo Community Fridge is a working fridge that sits on the streets of East Ferry and Welker. It is open 24/7 and holds free nutritious foods for anyone. This is a place where food is not a privilege but a basic human right. Our mission is to build stronger community bonds, eliminate food waste, and address food insecurity in our neighborhood through mutual aid.
What inspired the Buffalo Community Fridge?
I originally heard of the idea coming from NYC. I did some research and saw that this concept has been going on all over the world for quite some time, but it is newer to the States. The next day, I posted on social media, asking if anyone had a fridge they didn’t want. I secured a refrigerator that week and got the ball rolling. We found a host location, set up electricity, walked around local markets and businesses to spread the word, and finally plugged the fridge in on October 1st, 2020.
How can people help? There are so many different things that a person can do to help maintain the fridge. •
•
Each day, someone needs to check in on the fridge to make sure food hasn’t gone bad, that it is clean and working properly. Anyone can do this at any time. We have a volunteer website (communitycanvases.ivolunteer. com) that has a slot for each day where community members can sign up. However, you do not need to sign up in order to visit the fridge. This is as much my project as it is anyone else’s. It would not be possible without everyone's help. There is also a need for community members to help spread the word about the fridge and to help eliminate food waste. For example, while I am at the farmers market, I mention to vendors that if there is any food left at the end of the day, it can be dropped off at the fridge, giving others access to fresh produce.
“The fridge runs for the community by the community.”
•
Donations! The fridge runs for the community by the community. In order to keep the fridge stocked, we need help from everyone. We accept all food donations except for raw meat or seafood. If someone decides to package food themselves, we ask for it to be labeled with a date and ingredients. We do accept monetary donations on Cash App ($bflocommunityfridge) or Venmo (bflocommunityfridge) but highly encourage people to drop items off themselves and create conversation with community members.
Do you give out recipes with the food?
We do not usually have recipe cards available at the fridge. If there is a particular item (butternut squash) that some people are not familiar with cooking, we will put out cards or pieces of paper with instructions on how to prepare it. Chef Claire is a community member who loves to teach cooking and is passionate about this project. She is new to Buffalo but felt inspired by this project and helps in any way that she can. From cooking meals to sharing stories on her social media accounts on how to prepare low cost meals, she is a great resource for our community about how to stay full and nourished.
What's your most sought out item in the fridge?
A lot of people seem to ask for water, milk, fruit, and vegetables. We do have a pantry with a few shelves that is connected to the fridge. It holds dry goods as well as sanitary products.
Who painted the art on it?
Two local artists painted it: my two friends Grace Butler and Gen O'Connell.
How can someone start setting up their own community fridge?
It’s pretty simple. Find a host location and go from there. That seemed to be the biggest barrier to getting the fridge up and running. The fridge needs to be plugged in and running, not blocking a sidewalk, and you must have permission from the building owner to plug it in. We are more than happy to answer any questions and guide you through the process of starting a fridge. We can help in all different avenues. We encourage anyone to reach out with questions or even just for support. There has already been someone who has been inspired from the BCF and started their own fridge on the west side. This fridge is called Big Herk and is located at 167 Herkimer St. The ultimate goal is to have refrigerators all over Buffalo, in every neighborhood, building stronger community bonds and feeding each other.

The Many Benefits of Houseplants The lines between the outdoors and indoors are being blurred. Homeowners build extensive outdoor living spaces so they can relax on weather-resistant furniture and even cook in lavish kitchens in their backyards. In addition, indoor three-season rooms full of bright, open windows that showcase outdoor vistas challenge the boundaries between outside and inside. But there are some easy ways to enjoy the majesty of natural landscapes indoors. Houseplants can be used to improve indoor spaces, and they also provide various health benefits.
ALLERGIES According to WebMD, rooms with houseplants tend to have less dust and mold in them than those without any foliage. Leaves and other parts of the plants serve as natural filters, catching airborne particles and allergens. Plants with textured leaves might be especially effective at trapping particles.
FILTER THE AIR Researchers who presented their work at the 252nd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society found certain houseplants can combat the potentially harmful effects of volatile organic compounds. Plants may help filter out VOCs like benzene, acetone and formaldehyde, which can enter indoor air via cleaning supplies, dry-cleaned clothes, furniture, printers, and paints.
32 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
MORE OXYGEN INTO THE AIR The human respiratory system works by bringing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite during photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide and then release oxygen. Plants can put much more oxygen into the air, improving indoor conditions.
INTERIOR ATMOSPHERE Prevention magazine says plants can be used to screen unattractive areas, moderate room temperature by shading spots from the sun and even reduce noise. Plants also can improve ambiance and create a pleasing atmosphere in a room.
INCREASE INDOOR HUMIDITY AND REDUCE ILLNESS Studies from the Agricultural University of Norway found that indoor plants can increase humidity in indoor spaces, which decreases the incidences of sore throats, dry coughs, dry skin, and the common cold. Higher absolute humidity can decrease the chances of survival and transmission of the flu virus.
IMPROVED MOOD Growing and caring for plants can alleviate everyday stress. A nationwide study from UK Magazine Gardeners World found 80 percent of gardeners declared themselves satisfied with life compared to 67 percent among non-gardeners. Gardeners were more positive mentally. Greenery can help people feel more at home and improve mental health. A rehab center in Norway found patients reported a greater increase in well-being four weeks after having greenery added to their surroundings.

Murals, Art + Positivity!
BY AM ANDA D U D E K
You Got This! That uplifting affirmation is the title of Chris Piontkowski’s first local mural.
Buffalo native Chris Piontkowski, who goes by Chris P., studied media arts and animation at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. “After I graduated, I realized that getting a job in that field was tricky,” said Chris P. He began working at Hyatt’s All Things Creative in Buffalo, an art supply store and a great fit as Chris continued to pursue his art. Although he has been creating art for many years, he only began painting outdoor murals two years ago. “Murals were something I wanted to get into for the longest time,” shared Chris P. “I constantly brought it up to other artists, looking for an opportunity.” In 2019, his opportunity would finally arrive thanks to the inaugural Hertel Alley Street Art Festival in North Buffalo. “That was the culmination,” said Chris P. “It was organized by local artists as well as artists from out-of-town and paid for by the artists. The idea was to donate our time to create a fun event.” “It was a blast!” recalled Chris P. “Painting my first mural went as well as I could have hoped,” It was a Saturday and Sunday event, but I was only able to work on my mural 34 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
Saturday night and Sunday. I had been practicing for a while, but I still learned a lot. For example, a wall is very textured, so I have transitioned from using a roller to using a spray gun when prepping a wall for a mural. It gets into the wall’s texture very well and provides a good base coat. It was a lot of fun!”
my belief is any more complicated than that.”
The theme of Chris’ first mural? A sunset with flowers! Chris, a camping enthusiast and former Boy Scout, loves nature but is quick to clarify that he would not consider himself a “nature nut.” He began incorporating many florals into his work because “they are organic and can never be painted the same way twice.” He gravitates towards pollinator friendly flowers which grow well locally, with the exception of his Hertel Alley Hawaii-themed plumerias. “The saying is that if the bees go, they are taking us with them,” said Chris P. “And I love honey! I can’t say
Fun and brightly colored, Chris’s mural mix of pop art and street art, floral imagery and geometric elements, quickly caught on, and requests began coming in. Then, COVID-19 arrived. “COVID changed so much, honestly,” he said. “Hyatt’s was able to remain open, and in that unique situation, I was left in charge of the entire building. This was a huge opportunity for me and has led to great things. During 2020, I was only able to do two murals, but they were massive.” One of these two massive murals is in Williamsville and the other is in Medina, his furthest mural from Buffalo so far. “My Williamsville mural is a 1,700 square foot piece near the Williamsville Village Hall, and my Medina mural is 17 feet high and 70 feet long off of Main Street in the heart of Medina,” he said. These murals, two of the seven Chris has created so far, are both open to the public, although he has done some (cont.) THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM |Buffalo 35
private pieces, as well. His point in creating these mammoth masterpieces? To make people smile. “I do hope people support their local pollinators and flowers, but my main goal is just to brighten people’s day,” Chris P. explains. “If they see my murals and smile, my job is done. That is a good thing and is important to me.” Chris’s murals have met with tremendous response. “I am definitely reaching my goal of brightening people’s day,” he confirmed. “People have used my murals as a part of wedding photos, senior photos, and more. They seem to love it, and it feels good to see their reactions.” What is next for Chris P.? More Murals! “I plan to work on additional pieces, both public and private,” he shared. “I will be moving into my spring concepts. Hyatt’s All Things Creative is an art supply retailer and has given me access to any material I could think of for my art. Everything is available.”
My pieces sometimes make people laugh and are simply intended to be fun. It feels good knowing my art is a part of the Buffalo area. - Chris P.

WE SOLVE
CHIMNEY AND FIREPLACE PROBLEMS! Season after season, the brick and masonry of your home suffers from Winter’s freezing cold winds and spring’s snowmelt and rain only to be followed by the punishing heat of the Summer Sun. And still, you depend on your masonry to protect you from the elements and your chimney to safely remove deadly gases daily, and just like the rest of your home, your chimney and masonry need routine maintenance and upkeep too! The Western New York “Freeze-Thaw” cycle is now upon us as Winter ends and Spring starts. The snow and ice melt will do its damage - due to the warm sunny days and the freezing temperature of night. The up and down temps will cause mortar joints and masonry to expand and contract and fracture and separate, allowing the water into tight places where it freezes and expansion pressure causes further damage. Starting March 1st, we have now opened our schedule to book Free Masonry Inspections of your home. Call now to schedule your inspection for your home or garage walls, chimneys and crowns, retaining walls, steps and stairs as well as walkways, columns and patios. If external damage is found during our inspection, our technicians will provide you an estimate for repair. Estimates may include the grinding out of deteriorated mortar joints and repointing with fresh mortar, as well as the removal and replacement of damaged brick or even the dismantling and rebuilding of your troubled area. Once your repair and/or leak is corrected, a waterproofing agent will be applied to the new brick or masonry surface to preserve the integrity of the repairs. We take leaking, damaged or worn masonry and chimneys and give them new life, returning them to safe operation once again.

Cortese Construction Presents Hammertime: Expert Answers to Your Construction Questions I plan to remodel part of my home. What should I consider first? Each space in your home has different dynamics and functions. Also, the codes are different for the requirements in each space. For example, the electrical code speaks about circuit separation in kitchens and baths while requiring smoke detectors in bedrooms. Bedrooms require a certain ratio of glass to floor area as well as egress-able windows. Understanding these code requirements should be the first step in starting any renovation. I have noticed many homeowners are turning their basements into livable space. Is that a possibility for my basement? With the advent of the egress-ability requirement for basement spaces, the basement has become a new frontier for living space. The code requires a window with a well that allows for escape from the basement. With an egress window in place, the code allows for use of a basement area as living space and counts as legal sellable square footage. I would like to turn my home into open concept space. How do I know which walls are load-bearing walls and work around them? It is very popular in today’s design to feature an open concept. Look in the basement first to determine the main bearing beam in the house and its direction. Any wall that is parallel to this beam anywhere in the house is a bearing wall and would require a support beam to carry the load that the wall is carrying. I am planning an outdoor recreational area. How do I decide if my outdoor space should be a deck, a patio, a three-season room, or a space separated from my home? Budget, really. You can design an outdoor space on a small budget with paving stones that you install on your own. Conversely, a multi-season sunroom addition will give you an outdoor and indoor environment at a substantial investment. Understand that unknown or hidden issues can plague a renovation. Things like rotted wood, mechanical obstacles, and code upgrades can skew a budget. It is important to create a contingency budget so as to be better prepared to deal with them. How much time will my project take? Time management is important with any renovation. It is important to understand the steps of a project that could affect its timeliness. A skilled contractor will stage his work so that he can perform it seamlessly. Variables to Consider When Choosing a
MEDIA ROOM The term “home theater” once made homeowners who love movies and sports dream of the day when they could dedicate a large area in their home to watching the big game or their favorite films. Such rooms are now widely referred to as “media rooms.”
Though the terminology may have changed, media rooms are not all that different from home theaters. Before choosing an area of their home as their designated media room, homeowners must consider a host of variables to ensure they get as much out of the room as possible.
LOCATION & SHAPE Of course the location of the room is of the utmost importance. Media rooms tend to be more social settings than traditional home theaters, which were often designed to be isolated from the rest of the home so noise and natural light did not adversely affect the film-watching experience. Homeowners may not want their media rooms to be in high traffic areas of their homes, but they needn’t be completely secluded, either. The renovation experts at the DIY Network note that the shape of a room should be considered before designating it as the media room. In general, square rooms are not ideal, as such rooms can produce harmonic distortions. A rectangular room likely won’t produce such distortions, especially when homeowners place their screens and primary speakers on short walls. It’s important that homeowners do not downplay the importance of sound, as media rooms, unlike traditional home theaters, may be used for listening to music just as much as they are for watching films or sports. Viewers may not recognize distortions when watching something, but homeowners may notice these abnormalities when listening to music.
44 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Buffalo
WINDOWS
WALL COLORS
Media rooms are multi-purpose rooms, so homeowners don’t need to remove rooms with windows from consideration. But the experts at the DIY Network note that windows are hard surfaces that can reflect sound and distort audio, and the light that gets in through windows can produce reflections on the viewing surface. Each of those factors can adversely affect your listening and viewing experience. A room with windows can still make for a good media room, but you may want to invest in some blackout curtains to mitigate some of the disadvantages of having windows in the room.
The color of the walls in the room is another variable homeowners will have to consider. Homeowners won’t want to host guests for the big game in rooms with darkened walls, as that can create a dreary atmosphere and potentially make people tired. But especially bright colors will reflect light and adversely affect the viewing experience. Neutral colors should not affect the colors on the screen, making them the ideal color choice for media room walls. Media rooms are high on many homeowners’ renovation lists. Considering a host of variables prior to designating an area for a media room can ensure the finished product is as enjoyable as possible.
