Thank you
Thank you to whomever turned in my wallet at the Avon Tops. It was the week before Christmas too, no less. Thank you.
KUDOS
THANK YOU to our local town/village of Avon for keeping our roads cleared so far this winter. They are always out early, late, and inbetween, helping to make sure we get to our destinations safely. We appreciate you!
Please Drive Safely and Smartly!
Please be sure that your headlights are on whenever your wipers are. It is astounding how many vehicles do not follow this LAW. It is required of drivers to use their headlights when visibility is low, at dawn and dusk, and when it's raining, snowing, or sleeting. It's not just to help you see where you're going - it's to help others see YOU/your vehicle. Pleasedrive safely and smartly!
Electric Shopping Carts
I felt bad for this elderly lady (80+). She was dropped off at the door. She could hardly walk or stand and had an oxygen tank. She had to wait, quite a while, until an electric handicap cart was brought in from outside by an employee. Everyone of the handicap carts were being used by other people. Most walked ok from their vehicles that were parked far out in the lot. Yes, some do require the use of a handicap cart but it amazes me that they feel more entitled than to someone who really does need one.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Scan local advertisements: Church bulletins, newspaper classified ads and online bullet boards typically boast a number of items for sale, many of which are being sold at a fraction of the cost of new items. Before embarking on shopping trips, check these advertisements to see if there are any preowned items that meet your needs.
In addition, there are a number of social media groups that enable members to advertise their items for sale. Others are encouraged to inquire about the sales and make their own offers. Though it might take some effort, it is possible to get brand-name used merchandise for less.

January 20, 2025 commemorates the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr, who “had a dream” that boys and girls could school together, regardless of race, religion, creed, or color, judged only “by the content of their character” and not “the color of their skin.” 61 years later, where do you think we stand as a nation?
- We have achieved Dr. King’s vision
- We have made significant progress, but there’s still work to be done
- We have made little to no progress toward this vision
- We are now moving away from Dr. King’s dream

Aluminum fencing is ideal for those looking for something that’s both ornamental and functional. Aluminum fencing may not appeal to those homeowners whose biggest priority is privacy, as aluminum fences are not solid walls. But aluminum fences are typically low maintenance, and they can be effective at keeping both kids and pets in the yard. Aluminum fences painted with a rust-inhibiting primer may require even less maintenance than aluminum fences painted without primer.
Cutworms: The lawn care experts at Scotts® note that cutworms are moth larvae that hide in the thatch layer of a lawn during the day before emerging at night to feed on grass blades. Patches of brown grass between one and two inches in width is a sign of cutworm infestation. Homeowners who notice a growing number of birds pecking away in their lawns may have a cutworm infestation, which can be confirmed by peeling up a section of damaged grass and looking for cutworms, which are brown, gray or black and tend to be around two inches long.
Establish the budget. Homeowners should figure out how many dollars they can designate to a living room makeover before purchasing supplies or hiring out the work. Figure out the scope of the remodel, visit stores or suppliers to price out materials, get estimates from contractors, and then plan for some unforeseen circumstances along the way to determine if this type of renovation is affordable. If not, scale things back until the project more closely aligns with your budget.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You recently wrote that you do not recommend probiotics in healthy people. I am a 78-year-old male who, three years ago, underwent an esophagectomy to remove my esophagus and part of my stomach because of cancer. I was put on 30 mg of pantoprazole, which was later increased to 40 mg. I’ve read that prolonged use of this medicine isn’t recommended. My understanding is that this medicine is used to reduce the chance of acid reflux. I have read that it also kills bacteria (both bad and good) in the stomach. I asked my primary care physician about this and whether she was OK with me starting probiotics to help restore the good bacteria. -- E.M.
ANSWER: Proton-pump inhibitors like pantoprazole are often used in people after surgical treatment for esophageal cancer. They reduce acid reflux and consequently prevent a stricture where the remainder of the esophagus meets the remainder of your stomach. While it is true that proton-pump inhibitors do have the potential for side effects with long-term use, there are times when the benefits outweigh the risks. Many esophageal cancer experts feel that the benefits outweigh the risks in esophageal survivors like you.
Long-term acid suppression does lead to changes in the gut bacteria, called the microbiome. Using probiotics to improve the quality of the microbiome has been studied, and preliminary studies showed that taking probiotics daily can get more healthy bacteria in the gut. What isn’t clear is whether this translates to better outcomes for the patient or whether any of the long-term adverse effects of proton-pump-inhibitor therapy will be reduced. It makes sense that it might help, but it is unproven as yet.
There is the potential for harm in probiotic treatment, but it’s not common. A very few cases of infection have been shown to be transmitted by probiotics. The main harm is mostly financial, since some probiotics are expensive.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 81 years old and in pretty good health. I often have a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep. A couple of months ago, I was dealing with a sore lower back from overdoing yard work, so I took two ibuprofen tablets before going to bed for several nights in a row. What I noticed is that I was able to get to sleep quicker.
I have continued to take ibuprofen as a sleep aid, and it continues to help me get to sleep. But I am wondering if there might be any medical issue that could arise from the continued daily use of ibuprofen. -- J.T.N.
ANSWER: Most people don’t find that ibuprofen helps or hurts their sleep, so I don’t recommend it as a sleep aid in general. In fact, some people find that ibuprofen can be disruptive to their sleep. Others, however, find that it makes them sleepy.
In any case, the risk of two ibuprofen tablets at night, or even every day, is small. A person with a history of ulcer disease or abnormal bleeding shouldn’t take ibuprofen daily without discussing it with their doctor.

This year marks a remarkable milestone for the Traveling Cabaret, a volunteer performance troupe, as they celebrate their 35th anniversary on July 4th. Since its founding in 1990 by twins Phyllis and Sandy Kravetz and Linda Maloney, the cabaret has performed over 590 shows, raising funds for student scholarships and various charitable organizations while delighting audiences.
e cabaret’s performances are anything but ordinary, and the Kravetz sisters say, “Audiences know to expect the unexpected.” Unlike a traditional chorus, thetroupeincorporatesprops, costumes, and choreography into each number, creating a dynamic experience for audiences. From fast-paced Broadway and movie tunes from the 1920s to modern day, to comedy routines and holiday-themed numbers, shows are designed to entertain people of all ages.
e troupe, comprised of eight members as well as pianist Bob Dietch and sound expert Bruce Dunn, meets weekly to rehearse while balancing personal and professional lives. Some members are now retired, while others maintain full-time careers. Despite these commitments, the cabaret remains central to their lives. Phyllis beams, “I’m proud of our little group. It makes you feel nine feet tall to bring joy to the community and raise money for the charities. It makes us feel good that we generate money for worthy causes.”
roughout the years, the Traveling Cabaret has been featured across regional media and has garnered accolades for their contributions to the cultural vitality of the Rochester community. ey have received thirty-eight grants and various commendations, including certificates of achievement from the Monroe County Legislature, NYS Senate, and local governments. e troupe’s efforts were recognized by the Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester during their 10th anniversary celebration, and they have been honored with the JC Penney Golden Rule Award for community service.
e group’s enduring success and camaraderie are evident in Phyllis’ reflection: “We are like a big family. have the opportunity to meet so many people—we mingle with the audience, answer questions. No group lasts 35 years, but we’re doing something right to still be together today.”
Phyllis and Sandy add, “ ere’s so much bad in the world. It’s fun to provide something fun for our audiences. When we look out at the audiences, no matter the ages or demographics, heads are bobbing, toes are tapping—it goes straight to our hearts.”
Traveling Cabaret performances continue to delight audiences at venues ranging from restaurants and gazebos to churches and private homes. Attired in their signature red, white, and black evening wear, they bring a polished and spirited energy to each show. eir holiday performances are particularly anticipated, featuring both beloved classics and lighthearted pieces like “Christmastime is No Time to Diet” and “ e 8 Days of Hanukkah.”
e cast’s diversity and dedication exemplify the unifying power of music and performance. Cast members hail from all walks of life, includingretireddentalhygienists,anITexpert, arespiratorytherapist, a social worker, retired bank representative, and a retired Eastman Kodak employee. Despite their varied backgrounds, the members share a common passion for bringing joy to others through song and dance.
As they approach their 35th anniversary, the Traveling Cabaret stands as a testament to the power of community, dedication, and the joy of performance. Indeed, the Traveling Cabaret continues to prove that music can bring people together, create lasting memories, and inspire generations to come.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a puppy about two months ago. “Spencer” seemed to housetrain just fine, but for the last couple of weeks, he has been pooping on the bathroom rug. It’s not diarrhea, just regular healthy poos. He does it between walks – even though he poops as normal during walks! What is going on?
– John D. in Burlington, Vermont
DEAR JOHN: Even though Spencer seems healthy, take him to the vet to rule out any underlying health issues. In the days prior to the vet appointment, get out a notepad and write down his behaviors, what time he poops each day, if he’s doing a lot of barking –anything. Bring that to the appointment; it might give the vet additional insight.
Puppies go through phases during their growth, and it’s not too unusual to see some regression in housetraining periodically. For example, when they’re teething, or as they enter their “teen” phase at around 8 months or so, you may see a change in behavior patterns or “forgetting” commands you know they’ve learned.
If there is no health issue to worry about, focus on training. Go back to basics and teach him how to alert you when he needs to go outside. Work on his basic commands. Observe him closely when you’re at home to see whether his behavior is changing.
You may need to adjust your schedule as well. If he’s an especially young puppy, his body is changing rapidly and he may need more potty breaks than the training guide says. Be prepared to make those adjustments as you patiently retrain him. And don’t worry, he will fully housetrain, as long as you remain diligent. PUPPY’S ANXIETY IS

Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.

DISTRACTIONS THAT CAN AFFECT EFFICIENCY AT WORK
Meetings: Meetings may be well-intentioned, but they often compromise productivity and distract professionals from their jobs. A recent study titled “Meetings in America” commissioned by Verizon Conferencing found that 90 percent of professionals admitted to daydreaming during meetings, while 39 percent admitted they had fallen asleep during meetings in the past. Managers can help employees get more done and limit distractions by scheduling fewer meetings or reconsidering just who needs to attend meetings more carefully.
